Hollywood Continues to Waste the Greatness of Clive Owen

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets, Luc Besson’s new assault-on-the-senses Fifth Element-on-steroids adventure film is hitting theaters in a few weeks. To be fair, it looks like a visual stunner, even if it seems a little busy. The stars of Valerian are DiCaprio doppelgänger Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne. And, if you pay super close attention to the new trailer and TV spots circulating out there, you will notice another familiar face: Clive Owen.

It would be easy to miss Clive Owen in these previews because, you see, Owen’s character is the stock Commander of Valerian, the military blowhard who will undoubtedly guide or deter our heroes from their mission. It’s a familiar archetype for adventure films, one that could be filled by any number of competent character actors who are experts in blending into the green screen background and getting out of the way of the central players. Only this time, it’s Clive Fucking Owen.

Saying that Hollywood is wasting Owen might be shortsighted; I’m sure there are a handful of reasons why one of the most magnetic leading men of the 2000s has been relegated to also rans in the tapestry of a summer sci-fi movie. But, for the sake of time, let’s just assume this supporting role in Valerian is all he could get. Why?

There may not have been a more captivating star of the previous decade than Clive Owen. After working his way up the ladder with bit parts in The Bourne Identity and starring roles in lesser fare like Beyond Borders, Owen tried his hand at action in Antoine Fuqua’s uneven King Arthur adaptation. But in 2004, he showed incredible ferocity as Larry, the alpha male in Mike Nichols’ Closer. As a scorned but pigheaded, arrogant volcano of a human being, Owen commanded the screen in the film’s greatest moments, especially this one:

He was nominated for a Supporting Actor Oscar for Closer, and should have won; instead, it went to Morgan Freeman, who played the “Morgan Freeman wise character” in Million Dollar Baby. And then, two years later, Owen anchored the greatest science-fiction film of the decade, and one of the best of the entire genre: Children of Men. Around these classic performances were solid turns in Spike Lee’s Inside Man, the hyper-violent Shoot ‘Em Up, and the incredibly underrated financial thriller The International. Even his lesser films like Derailed, or the bubbly grifter comedy Duplicity, remain undeniably watchable because of Owen’s presence on screen.

This guy is a movie star, and if his acting prowess were ever in question, even after a run of greatness like he had in the 2000s, look no further than his performance in Steven Soderbergh’s brilliant Cinemax drama, The Knick. As John Thackery, the drug-addled surgeon at the heart of Soderbergh’s period drama, Owen leaned into his brash, commanding aura, creating one of the most fascinating characters on television.

And from there, well, Clive Owen has been relegated to window dressing for a movie like Valerian. Maybe he will end up being an integral part of the story, or maybe he will stand out among the supporting cast; this poster, however, makes me think he’s just another spoke in the wheel:

Clive Owen

And again, Valerian could be an absolute blast. I’m not here to bash it, this is more about what Clive Owen is not doing these days, and that’s headlining incredible movies the way he once did. He does have a handful of projects in some stage of production, including what should be a meaty role as Claudius in the Shakespeare (spinoff?) Ophelia. He’s also headlining a science-fiction thriller from Andrew Niccol called Anon. We’ll see if any of these upcoming films utilize the incredible talents of Clive Owen.

Regardless, the guy needs to step out of the shadows of green screens and get back to being a badass.

Home Video Review: The LEGO Batman Movie

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The LEGO Batman Movie is in the top tier of Batman movies. Like Batman: The Movie (1966), Batman (1989) and The Dark Knight, the film finds new layers to the character. But unlike the others, it is the only one truly willing to dive into his intimacy issues.

The Movie

Directed by Chris McKay, the film follows the LEGO Batman (Will Arnett) first introduced in The Lego Movie as he faces a mid-life crisis. After telling the Joker (Zach Galifianakis) that he’s just not that into him, all of the LEGO Dark Knight’s relationships unravel. Commissioner Gordon retires, handing his job over to his daughter Barbara (Rosario Dawson). The Joker appears at Gordon’s retirement party to turn himself — and the rest of the rogues — in. Suddenly, Batman has no role in town.

Meanwhile, Dick Grayson (Michael Cera) arranges to get Bruce Wayne to adopt him.

With the Gotham City criminals behind bars, Batman begins to believe Joker has a bigger plan and takes Dick along with him on a heist to the Fortress of Solitude. But is it possible he’s walking right into Joker’s trap?

Expertly realized, The LEGO Batman Movie weaves between humor, emotional stakes and insane action set pieces. It is a film willing to confront Batman’s reticence to start a family while also featuring a scene in which Clayface rollerskates on a pair of Daleks to fight a Kraken.

Underscoring the shifts in tone is the very look of the film. More so than even The Lego Movie, LEGO Batman’s world looks like a bunch of LEGO creations in some kid’s backyard. While nearly photorealistic, the film also features a more expressive animation style as the LEGO minifigs enjoy a greater range of movement.

Backing the animation is a strong performance by Arnett. Affecting a Bat-voice that cannot be easy on the vocal chords, he manages to give LEGO Batman the sound of a supreme egotist, a very lonely boy and a dude happy to have a friend. Michael Cera also offers a strong performance as Dick Grayson. While not the traditional version of the character, he becomes a cheerful and heartfelt foil for LEGO Batman. Dawson and Ralph Fiennes also provide great performances as Barbara Gordon and Alfred. Each highlighting a member of Batman’s burgeoning family with surprising depth.

The Extras

The Blu-ray release of The LEGO Batman Movie features the typical assortment of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment extras, including a commentary, deleted scenes and assorted featurettes.

The best of the bunch is the fast but informative One Brick at a Time: The Making of the LEGO Batman Movie. It offers a nice overview of the various departments involved in bringing 3D animated movies to life. Using some of the frantic style of the film itself, it manages to breath new life into the topic; even if you’ve watched featurettes like it on other titles. Other featurettes include a spotlight on the voice cast, a series of stop-motion LEGO Batman shorts created by fans and a bizarre LEGO Batman Comic-Con panel.

The deleted scenes are a mix of early animation and storyboard style animatics. Each is surprisingly funny, with “Batman and The Mayor Swap” being the best of the bunch. But in each case, it is easy to see why the scenes were never finalized. Any one of them would slow a film which is already 104 minutes.

An additional set of animated shorts gives Billy Dee Williams a few moments to shine as Two-Face. The best of the group, however, reinvents Harley Quinn as a talk show host for Arkham Asylum’s public access channel.

The extras are rounded out with a number of promotional clips that, while often funny, start to get repetitive with the use of the “I only have one butt” joke from the trailers.

The commentary features director Chris McKay and twenty members of the production team. They discuss the various challenges of realizing small moments, colossal sets and the joy of working in such an imaginative realm. As with many animators’ commentaries, that joy becomes infectious.

Verdict

The LEGO Batman Movie is a worthwhile purchase for fans of the lighter side of Batman. While it celebrates some the character’s darker impulses, it definitely pings the Batman ’66 receptors in the viewer’s brain. The special features do not offer the deepest or most interesting insights, but maintain the tone of the feature. And really, the most special feature of all is the movie itself. It’s a gem of a film offering big action and a surprisingly thoughtful look at the Batman.

Do you agree? Prefer The LEGO Movie or the other LEGO Batman direct-to-video features? Let us know in the comments below.

A Birthday Letter for Chris Evans On Why He Should Run for President

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Happy birthday, Chris! Can I call you Chris? We’ve never met, but I feel like we’re on a first-name basis. Your laid-back demeanor and tendency to leave your home in backwards baseball caps probably contribute to that feeling, but that’s not why I’m writing to you today. Today, I want to celebrate your 36th birthday with a gift: a list of reasons why you would make an outstanding candidate for president. This may also be a gift to myself, and the general American public, but I guess that’s for you to decide, Cap.

Here are some reasons you, Christopher Robert Evans, should run for President of the United States as soon as possible. Happy Birthday!

10. “Get you a POTUS who can do both”

Chris, you’ve already proved that you’re a versatile actor and human being. You’ve managed to balance frat boy skill at drinking games on late night TV with looking amazing in a tuxedo. You’ve brought a scrappy kid from Brooklyn to the big screen and revived Cap’s popularity. You’ve portrayed everything from a deep-thinking, rebellious man at the end of the world, to a football-playing dude who reinvented banana splits forever. You are the embodiment of “Get you a Guy Who Can Do Both”. You can easily adapt to any situation the role of “POTUS” would throw your way. You appeal to pretty much any demographic, and we already know you’ll look good doing so.

9. You care about local as well as national and international policy.

You often tweet about national news. However, it’s important for our president to care about issues both big and small. It’s already evident that you know how to do this. It’s nice to hear your Boston accent every now and again, as well. Uncle Mike has my vote.

8. You can jump very high without much lead-up

A president should have surprising skills. This is only one of yours. Others include tap dancing, singing, and playing the guitar. Remember when you jumped over Chris Pratt? Imagine breaking that out in front of international world leaders. They’d be so impressed.

7. Your Twitter is already better sourced than the current POTUS

Shortly after the election, I added your twitter to my text notifications. Sure, I have been a fan of yours for quite a while and enjoy hearing your thoughts in your own voice in real time. But while diversifying my news sources, I decided to add your twitter feed to my daily reads. I have not been disappointed. You talk about scientific discovery, international policy, finance, intersectional feminism, LGBTQ rights, and the list goes on and on. And you often source your information, meaning readers don’t just have to take your word for it–they can go read the same info you did and draw their own conclusions. Respect.

6. Charity Work Looks Good on You

Remember when you and Chris Pratt made a Superbowl bet, and raised a bunch of money for kids hospitals? Remember when you did the ice bucket challenge and encouraged other high-profile celebs to take part as well? Remember when you did the push-up challenge to bring awareness to veterans in America? You’ve already drawn your fans’ attention to important causes close to your heart. Add President to your profile? Awareness will skyrocket.

5. Sometimes you Over-prepare

If failing to prepare is preparing to fail, then you’ll succeed every time. That would probably come in handy for changing time zones, emergency press conferences, and the generally unpredictable nature of the job of POTUS.

4. You’ve Punched Adolf Hitler Over 200 times

(This may have been Steve Rogers, but at this point I’m convinced you are one and the same). (Also, you are not afraid to punch nazis in a non-fictional, modern context.)

3. Bi-partisan Supporter

As an actor and director, you take time to celebrate the success of others in your field. You’ve even congratulated DC and Star Trek actors–the film version of reaching across the aisle–on their work. You’re a man who can recognize a good idea, regardless of where it comes from. We could use more of that in the White House.

2. Family-oriented

Having a close relationship with your family plays well with the American public. You’ve already got that down pat, between walking the red carpet with your mom (see above), filming piano duets with your brother, and copying your nephews lingo. This is one presidential skill you don’t even need to practice–you already do it so well.

1. Dodger would look great on the White House lawn

You know what else Americans love? A dog in the White House. Just imagine Dodger on the White House Christmas card. Damn, that would be cute. I mean, if that doesn’t convince you to run for president, then nothing will. Happy birthday, Chris. See you in 2020

‘The Evil Within 2’ Official Trailer and Gameplay Revealed

Monkeys Fighting Robots

“You are Detective Sebastian Castellanos and at your lowest point. But when given a chance to save your daughter, you must enter a world filled with nightmares and discover the dark origins of a once-idyllic town to bring her back. Horrifying threats emerge from every corner as the world twists and warps around you. Will you face adversity head on with weapons and traps, or sneak through the shadows to survive? This is your one chance at redemption, and the only way out is in.”

If you thought the horrors of ‘Evil Within’ had died in the final level – you were wrong. Sebastian Castellanos is back. Unfortunately so are the things that go bump in the night.
A History Of Evil

A sequel to 2014 horror game ‘The Evil Within’,will launch October 13 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, Bethesda announced during its E3 press conference. The hit horror game from  Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami will simply be called ‘The Evil Within 2’.

The game will be continuing the adventure of Sebastian Castellanos, protagonist of The Evil Within. It has been confirmed that the story will be set three years after the events of the first game. There will be direct links between the story from the first game with Sebastian having to re-enter STEMS to save his daughter. The trailer shows a good mix of stealth and gun combat – staples of the first game.

Details are still scarce as to any player upgrades, however, the game play trailer shows sharper graphics than it’s predecessor. The teaser also shows smoother player movements and of course blood, gore and monsters. Lots and lots of monsters. The official site for the game teases;

  • Story of Redemption – Return to the nightmare to win back your life and the ones you love.
  • Discover Horrifying Domains – Explore as far or quickly as you dare, but prepare wisely.
  • Face Disturbing Enemies – Survive the onslaught of horrifying creatures determined to rip you apart.
  • Choose How to Survive – Craft traps, sneak, run and hide, or try to battle the horror with limited ammo.
  • Visceral Horror and Suspense – Enter a frightening world filled with anxiety-inducing thrills and disturbing moments.

As both the teaser and trailer show – while ammo might be in short supply – the horror certainly wont.

‘The Evil Within 2’ will be getting a Friday 13th October release on PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One. Were you a fan of the first game? What do you think of this news? Sound off in the comments below.

Watch Ellen Page Die in The ‘Flatliners’ Remake Trailer

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Until about ten minutes ago, I had forgotten we are getting a Flatliners remake. We don’t need a remake of Joel Schumacher’s Brat-Pack-Goes-To-Hell semi classic thriller, but here we are. It’s 2017, and the movie has been amped up and repackaged to take everything to 11.

This morning, Ellen Page, who plays the Julia Roberts character, shared the first trailer on her Facebook page. And it’s okay. Check it out:

In Flatliners, five medical students, obsessed by the mystery of what lies beyond the confines of life, embark on a daring and dangerous experiment: by stopping their hearts for short periods of time, each triggers a near-death experience – giving them a firsthand account of the afterlife. But as their experiments become increasingly dangerous, they are each haunted by the sins of their pasts, brought on by the paranormal consequences of trespassing to the other side.

And here is the poster:

flatliners

So… yeah. It looks fine, but it also looks like some sort of glossy, generic Final Destination riff. Part of the charm of the 1990 original was its grimness, it’s bleak outlook on these cocky medical students playing god. This looks too much like a modeling shoot at times. That being said, there could be some solid horror elements at play here, we’ll just have to see.

Aside from Page, Flatliners also stars Nina Dobrev, Diego Luna, and Kiersey Clemons. Oh yeah, and Kiefer Sutherland is in the credits as well, so this might be less a remake and more a continuation. It’s directed by Niels Arden Oplev, who directed the original version of The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo.

We’ll see is Flatliners has any life on September 29.

Saying Goodbye to ‘Octopus Pie’: Meredith Gran Ends OP after Ten Years

Monkeys Fighting Robots

After ten years, Meredith Gran is ending her slice-of-life webcomic Octopus Pie. Set in New York City, OP followed the adventures and existential musings of late-20s Eve Ning and her roommate Hannah. The last strip, published on June 5th, is a fond goodbye to the longtime readers of OP.

Over the last decade, OP has won and been nominated for several awards. The comic won the 2008 Web Cartoonist’s Choice Awards for Outstanding Newcomer. It was nominated for Outstanding Black and White Art and Outstanding Website Design, and the “Brownout Biscuit” storyline won the 2014 Ignatz Award for Outstanding Story.

octopus pie

Sadly, despite its many successes, Octopus Pie like anything else must come to an end. It’s always nice to see a comic come to a natural, fitting end. It’s the norm in the webcomic world to have things quietly spin out into silence, or just end abruptly without warning. Instead, Gran speaks from the heart in wishing her readers a fond farewell.

“This comic began in spring of 2007. It was two short months after the death of my father. I was shocked and lonesome and wished to fully dedicate myself to something. If that’s all it had given me, it would’ve been enough. The ways in which this comic has opened up my life to new people, places, skills, and ideas are endless. No form of expression could’ve changed my world so much. I can never fully express how grateful I am.”

-Meredith Gran

OCTOPUS PIE: WHAT NEXT?

Gran recently signed a deal with Image Comics and all of Octopus Pie is available in book form here. However, she’s unsure where to go next. As she says in an interview with Alenka Figa of Women Write About Comics;

Now that I am in my thirties and married and thinking about different parts of my life, I feel like it’s a perfect time to say goodbye to that world that I’ve been writing for so long.

Still, with Gran’s history, it’s reasonable to assume she’ll head right back into comics. Gran’s first webcomic was Skirting Danger, which she wrote as a teenager. (Skirting Danger appears to no longer be available online). So with the ending of Octopus Pie, it’s exciting to imagine what Gran will bring to the webcomic scene next.

‘Babyteeth’ #1: The First Cry of New Life Marks Dark Times Ahead

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Babyteeth #1 is one concept that has been done in media but not quite like this. A baby being born on this Earth is usually a good thing right? Well, as you see in Babyteeth, this one is more of a bad omen. Trying to be vague on this is difficult but trust me, Babyteeth is a wild ride. For sure this is one that’s tough to not spoil but I’m going to try not to. It’s a comic that has a quiet beginning but by the time it ends, life isn’t going to be calm for long. Hang in there for this one as we’re all going to be on this journey together. I’m ready to start up the after party and dark celebrations to come in Babyteeth #1. Keep your hats on your heads and all that good stuff because this one is going to be bonkers.

In all honesty, Babyteeth has a strange sort of calm to it. At least until the end where you see that this calm is leading to a powerful storm.

Babyteeth AfterShock #1 Cover

Yeah it is weird as you read Babyteeth how oddly calm it can be. Donny Cates and Garry Brown have created a unique beast of a comic. It all starts with the epitome of calm Sadie as she’s telling her son the story of how he was born. You can see from Mark Englert’s colors that despite the smile that Garry Brown puts on her face, something has gone down. Between the odd kind of optimism that Cates puts into Sadie’s voice, the atmosphere that Brown and Englert create show a different story. I love that the only illumination we have initially is from Sadie’s phone and the tiniest bit of moonlight. I say this, this intro creates the right tone for what is to come here. Does it ever create a tone for what’s to come.

Sadie as a character, I like her. She’s optimistic, kind, and as I said before, she’s calm and she’s perfect for this piece. You get to see her life before whatever it is is happening as she’s recording this story. At the point we see her she’s hidden her pregnancy and these people are trying to give her a hard time. Which leads us to her sister Heather, who is amazing, and which leads into the whole sequence of her baby being born. Now this is where the ominous tone begins. Every time Sadie has a contraction an earthquake begins. The earthquakes are a testament to Taylor Esposito’s lettering amongst other factors in the comic. The rumbles from the quake get more intense and the lettering for them reflects that. It’s in all the little touches at times my friends.

Babyteeth is thoughtful and optimistic in between the hints of dark times to come as we near the end of the issue.

Babyteeth AfterShock #1 Rumble

It also is going at a slow pace, which is great. You get the idea as to what this birth is going to give us as the baby is about to arrive. It’s a wild looking scene with a sparse looking segment with Sadie alone with a sort of thoughtful and oddly sorrowful look to her face and body language. Props to Garry Brown for conveying this scene and what Cates was aiming for, it works beautifully and Mark Englert’s deep reds was perfect. The design of the layout too with the signs of life was brilliant. Then it all leads to the name of the baby, which is a nice touch. It all builds to a level of optimism until the end of the issue. That’s when you realize, all is not well and I cannot imagine what will lead us to this point.

I like what Donny Cates is building towards so far. Sadie is a great lead and I am curious about her and her family in the months to come. Another factor will be how her baby plays into this because you know something is about to go down. It makes this first issue one that will make many readers ponder about in the months to come. We know something is going to happen, we just don’t know what. I can see this being a series many people including myself get addicted to. A well paced comic that creates many exciting possibilities which makes for a strong first issue.

It’s a quiet beginning with a few shocks to the system that create much suspense for the future of Babyteeth’s universe. One wicked and powerful ride awaits us.

It will be interesting to see what other readers think of this book as it goes on. As this first issue gives us many tantalizing hints of events to come. Babyteeth‘s first issue will be one to look back on but until then, I am excited to see how crazy this series will get. Excellent start for a series that seems primed to be one to shock and amaze readers as it goes on. Get on the ground floor for this one, you won’t regret it.

E3 2017: Dishonored 2: Death of The Outsider

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Yesterday’s Bethesda’s E3 conference had a bunch of announcements that can be found here. The one I want to focus on though is Dishonored 2: Death of The Outsider.

I’m not normally a fan of downloadable content as they normally add little to nothing to the base game and are just a simple cash grab. The DLC for the Dishonored series are different. While the main games normally focus on Corvo and his quest to save the empire, the side stories instead focus on Daud, played by Michael Madsen.

As is normally the case with any good story, the character we find ourselves rooting for isn’t always the hero. Often times an old antagonist turned protagonist is where development finds itself.

That is what makes Dishonored DLC so great. They’re all about Daud!

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6hKV8O_TS8[/embedyt]

The story so far

Some spoilers for Dishonored 1 and 2 below.

Based off the trailer we know we’re probably going to be given the choice of playing as either Daud or Billie Lurk while getting the chance to explore their shared past.

Oh and we also have as our target The Outsider.

A lot of people seemed disappointed by the title of the DLC and called out the impossibility of the task. We need to keep in mind that he was shown to be vulnerable in 2 when Delilah took over the void. A repeat by the assassin Daud and his protégé Billie shouldn’t be too farfetched.

In any case, this is probably the only DLC I’ll probably ever be excited for. I can’t wait for the extra lore.
