GWAR: Orgasmaggedon #2 – Like Forrest Gump, but bloodier

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In the second issue of their Dynamite mini-series, Matt Miner and GWAR’s Matt Maguire continue fleshing out the latest entry in the shock-rock band’s chaotic, bad-acid-trip mythos.

Picking up where the last issue left off, the members of the band are continuing their trek through time after being jettisoned from the present in the villainous Mr. Perfect’s phallic meat rocket. In GWAR mythos, Perfect is a powerful and omnipresent being who exists across all times and is responsible for the death of Oderus Urungus, former leader of our heroes, the Scumdogs (i.e., the band).

Now, he has his sights set on perennial GWAR nuisance Sawborg Destructo, aiming to siphon his DNA and incorporate it into his own. To keep the Scumdogs distracted as they play Forrest Gump across a number of high-profile events in human history, he also sends a pair of monsters back to deal with them: the serpentine War Minion Q, which is identified by the Aztecs as Quetzalcoatl, and the aptly-named Krakunt, which attacks the sinking Titanic.

The aesthetic of the art continues to be a nice throwback to ’90s cult comics like the “Mortal Kombat” tie-in series, as well as GWAR’s own album art. One of the backup stories, by OG GWAR Slave Pit member Hunter Jackson further hammers this home.

Ultimately, this series is still a fun must-read for GWAR’s fans or Bohabs. Whether anyone beyond that would enjoy it is another question — though it’s also hard to imagine anyone who doesn’t already like GWAR going out of their way to read the band’s comic.

Decoding This Mysterious ‘Close Encounters’ Teaser Trailer: This Means Something

Monkeys Fighting Robots

On Monday, Sony low-key released a teaser trailer on YouTube, and it is clearly a reference to Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi classic, Close Encounters of The Third Kind. There are static clips from the original film intercut with air traffic control graphics. Not to mention the title of the clip: “This Means Something.”

Check out the teaser and see what you make of it:

All of the clips here appear to be from the original film, except that last brief shot. It’s tough to tell what that is, some sort of landscape or maybe a different planet? Who the hell knows.

As for that website at the end, it appears to give you updates on UFO sightings if you so wish. Other than that, there is nothing tied to this, no director or title or information otherwise. What does this MEAN?!

It seems like this could mean one of three things: sequel, remake, re-release. The last options makes the most sense because December 14 marks the 40th anniversary of the original Close Encounters, so that makes sense. Then again, with Mystery Box marketing becoming a thing these days – ironically enough from J.J. Abrams, who borrowed from Spielberg to make his own career – this could be some subtle long-gap sequel.

Just don’t be a remake.

What do you think it is?

Review: 11 Reasons To Celebrate The War Being Fought In ‘Batman’ #26

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The war between The Riddler and the Joker escalates. As Riddler turns to Pamela Isley aka Poison Ivy for help, Joker infiltrates the organized crime family of Gotham ‘Godfather’ Carmine Falcone. Both men will stop at nothing to destroy the other, with heroes, villains and civilians all caught in between.Batman #26

Although both Joker and Riddler are written and illustrated amazingly in this arc so far, it’s Edward Nigma, in particular, that is the stand out for me. Not to play down the creative team, but the Joker as a character always carries a certain attitude and weight that is heard to screw up. However making the Riddler not only a major villain but also a major threat to both Batman AND the Joker, is no easy feat. Read on for 11 reasons it’s hard to pick a side in Batman #26, ‘War of Jokes and Riddles’ Part 2!

Batman #26
Page from ‘Batman’ #26
  1. The amount of backstory regarding the Falcone crime family that is worked into Bruce’s narration by Tom King. In a less capable writer, it would easily fall into exposition. Here it reads like the musings of a man who knows everything, as Batman WOULD.
  2. “I took your mother’s teeth from her mouth and I made a smile.” This Joker is truly scary.
  3. The Riddler doctor scene that is a callback to the Nicholson Joker scene in the ’89 Batman.
  4. Poison Ivy coldly and calmly taking out a bunch of thugs and gangsters.
  5. Riddler carving a question mark into his skin. This is a new kind of Edward Nigma we haven’t seen before.
  6. Joker trying various ways to force a smile on his face in front of a mirror as news of the Ridder’s crimes plays on the radio; 8 of the creepiest panels you will see this year.
  7. Riddler’s riddles. Funny, creepy, and actual excellent word-play and brain teasers.
  8. The GORGEOUS page of Batman cutting down some of Poison Ivy’s victims. The Way Janin uses vines as panel borders is genius. The colors are vibrant. This art team continues to draw one of the best renditions of Batman ever.
  9. The haunting image of Bruce standing in front of a wall of images containing the names and faces of victims of the various rogues. Again this is a Batman with loads of emotional baggage and pain.
  10. “The called me the Dark Knight. The World’s Greatest Detective. The Caped Crusader. I was a superhero.”
  11. All the villains are that drawn into the story. We get Firefly, Clayface, Deathstroke, Killer Croc, Zsasz, Two-Face, Ventriloquist and Scarface, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, Man-Bat, Deadshot, Mad Hatter, Solomon Grundy, and Mr. Freeze.

We’re approaching a year now with this Rebirth version of Batman, and the title is only growing stronger by the issue and arc. Don’t miss out on it this week. Even though it’s the second part of the story, it’s still something you can jump into if this is your first time reading Batman in a while. Fans of Batman’s rogues should definitely get this too.

Girl Power Reigns in “Star Wars: Forces of Destiny” Starring Daisy Ridley

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The first episode of Star Wars mini-series Forces of Destiny dropped yesterday, and it focuses on Rey and BB-8 in a story called “Sands of Jakku”, according to comicbook.com.

Forces of Destiny was announced in April at the annual Star Wars celebration. The first episode gives us a peek into Rey and BB8’s (admittedly short) time together on Jakku, with Rey voiced by none other than Daisy Ridley herself. Future episodes will include Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso, Ashley Eckstein as Ashoka Tano, and Shelby Young as a young Princess Leia.

Girl Power Rules in Forces of Destiny

The series focuses on women in the Star Wars universe. The animated style and short length of the episodes make Forces of Destiny a wonderful companion to other Star Wars content for younger audiences. And of course, there is a line of tie-in dolls/action figures for each main character. I’d be offended if they weren’t so damn COOL LOOKING. The companion droids are pretty great, as well.

I’m going to need all of these

The new face of Star Wars appears to be female, and the franchise is leaving very little, if anything, to complain about how these characters are depicted. Even their “dolls” are more “action” than “fashion”. It’s all we really wanted, honestly.

Each episode of Forces of Destiny follows one character through a side quest-like story, essentially filler for events that take place in the movies. It’s a concept Star Wars fans are plenty used to by now–though this is the first series entirely devoted to lady heroes.

Castle Rock Casting Updates – Carrie White Makes A Return!

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Four months ago J.J Abraham stunned the internet into silence when he dropped the teaser for his new show Castle Rock. However, since the teaser, which promised a world of Stephen King connections, there has been no further news. This has however changed with four casting announcements for the ten episode series.

The Cast

Sissy Spacek has been confirmed to star as Ruth Deaver. This is the second time that Spacek has worked on a King project, her 1976 performance as Carrie garnered her an Oscar nomination.  The character of Ruth Deaver will be the estranged adoptive mother of Henry. A retired professor, her failing memory could provide the key to the dark secrets of the town.

Andre Holland is another name attached to the project. He will be playing Henry, a death row attorney.  Adoptive son of Ruth Deaver, he has a unique and complicated history with the town of Castle Rock. With Holland playing a death row attorney, it raises questions whether the show will have scene’s set in Shawshank Prison, a frequent mention in Stephen Kings books.

Melanie Lynskey will be playing real estate agent Molly Strand. Suffering from a rare medical condition Molly will barely scraping by day-to-day. It must be hard to sell houses in a town rife with horrors such as Castle Rock.

The final piece of casting news is Jane Levy. Returning to the horror genre after Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe, Levy will be playing Jackie. Described as death-obsessed and the self-appointed town historian, it will be interesting to see Jackie interacting with other characters such as resident professor Ruth Deaver.

Castle Rock is being produced by J.J Abrams production company Bad Robot, with Abrams himself serving as executive producer. Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason will also serve as producers.

Whilst Castle Rock doesn’t have an air date on Hulu yet, it marks the fifth Stephen King adaptation this year. With The Mist, Mr. Mercedes, The Dark Tower and IT all airing at various points through the year, it begs the question – is it time for an extended Stephen King universe?

What do you think of the casting news? Who are you most excited to see in the show? Are there any other Stephen King properties you want to see? Sound off in the comments below.

Ghosts of Box Office Past: A Biopic, Big Willy, And The ‘Splosions Of Michael Bay

Monkeys Fighting Robots

One-hundred-plus years of filmmaking provides a long, rich, and deep history to look back on. Retro reviews and analysis of old films are practically necessary full-time specialties. Month after month, films release, vying to make as much money as possible. Some rise, some fall, but regardless of financial success, it’s never a sign of a lasting effect. A great example is the little-mentioned 2012 film released just eight years ago. 2012 made nearly 800 million dollars and effectively vanished off the face of the earth. So, where does this leave past box office champs?

Let’s take a look back ten, twenty, and thirty years ago at the biggest movies released in July.

La Bamba

la bamba-box office-july
Box Office (Domestic): 54+ million

The Star
In the late 80s, Lou Diamond Phillips was a relative unknown with a short list of films under his belt. Then Phillips was cast to play rocker Ritchie Valens in this biopic, and everything changed. After his Golden Globe-nominated performance, the actor was nominated the next year again for Stand and Deliver then featured in the awesome ensemble that made up the action western known as Young Guns. Phillips may have peaked as far as mainstream notoriety, but the actor stars (or directs) on stage, silver screen, and small screen all the time.

The Film
La Bamba was a biopic about Mexican-American rocker Ritchie Valens who scored an international hit in 1958 with the titular song. Valens sudden rise to fame created a ripple-effect within his family, and arguably, the world. In a short eight months, Valens recorded “La Bamba” and “Donna” two classic songs of the time. However, while riding in a plane with fellow rock superstars of the era (Buddy Holly and the “Big Bopper”), Valens and everyone aboard died when the plane crashed in Iowa.

La Bamba is a simple, small biopic that tells a beautiful, sentimental story of an artist tasting fame. However, that fame strains his relationships, including a brother torn by love and resentment. La Bamba works just as well today. The performances are strong throughout even if the story doesn’t take too many chances or dig too deep into its characters.

Fun Fact: La Bamba beat out beloved sci-fi classic RoboCop for the top spot this month.

Men in Black

men in black-box office-film
Box Office (Domestic): 250+ million

The Star
In 1993, Willard Carroll Smith, Jr. was the star of a successful TV sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Few people thought of him as much more than a charming actor with a rap career that is either the stuff of genius legend or awful depending on who you ask. In 1993, Smith starred in Six Degrees of Separation and everyone collectively thought “Holy shit this guy is pretty damn phenomenal.” Putting smart acting roles aside for making blockbusters instead, Will Smith starred in the 1995 hit Bad Boys. Then in 1996, as the Fresh Prince was ending, Smith struck box office gold again with Independence Day. A year later, was Men in Black.

The Film
Men in Black is a classic sci-fi, comic book comedy. Smith is a young NYPD officer who is recruited by a secret government agency tasked with keeping the aliens living on Earth a secret. Smith uses his fantastic comedy skills to play the fool alongside Tommy Lee Jones’ straight man, Agent K.

Men in Black is a regular film on rerun rotation. The effects may not have aged well, but the movie’s energy, solid directing by Barry Sonnenfeld, and light-hearted fun, plus Vincent D’Onofrio as a cockroach thing in human flesh is just plain fun to watch.

Transformers

transformers-box office-movie
Box Office (Domestic): 319+ million

The Star
Talk about a loaded topic when it comes to Shia LaBeouf. Before Transformers, LaBeouf starred or co-starred in some acclaimed films or cult favorites. One year it was Holes, the next was I, Robot. In 2007, before Transformers even released, LaBeouf lead a little suburban thriller, Disturbia, the best of the box office for that month. Transformers hit BIG, LaBeouf exploded into a mega-star and we, the people, were about to witness the strange melange of movies and live performance art produced by the young actor.

The Film
Without thinking about the sequels, each descending deeper and deeper into the realm of nonsensical filmmaking, the first Transformers film was precisely what it needed to be — dumb fun that was ONLY 143 minutes long. The story was straightforward, even if a bit nonsensical, too, but the film wasn’t overcrowded by a non-stop barrage of ‘splosions and computer-generated chaos of metal and madness.

The first Transformers, of course, made an F-ton of money and spawned four sequels. It firmly put director Michael Bay in a place where his story-less style of slow-motion and military propaganda, could flourish without evolving.

July 2017 Prediction …

box office-july-movies

The month of July 2017 sees three movies likely vying for the top spot. First up is Spider-Man: Homecoming or Spider-Man Version 3.0, the newest reboot of the web-slinger, now under the creative control (mostly) of Marvel, hits theaters again. The following week is War for the Planet of the Apes, the third installment in one of the best overall blockbuster franchises of the past ten years. After that is Luc Besson’s Valerian, the most expensive French film ever made. Spidey will be the top money-maker here. Apes and Valerian will both make plenty of money. But with the power of Marvel behind it and the Disney marketing machine, Spidey looks like a sure-thing.
