Netflix has announced that it will be producing an Umbrella Academy series. The short-lived comic will be turned into a live-action show for the streaming service. It’s hard to imagine some of these colorful characters as real world characters. However, here are some choices that could make these characters work.
White Violin is the scorned Hargreeves sibling who becomes the primary villain. She’s perhaps the most emotionally layered, as the odd child out in a super-family. Vanya isn’t necessarily evil, but she suffers from abandonment, which is always interesting. Additionally, a big component of her personality is centered on her musical abilities. It isn’t a priority that the actress
WHO TO CAST?
One actress who’s played a tormented musician well is Lola Kirke. Kirke is well known for her oboe-playing character in Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle. She’s got the music and acting chops to work the role. Emily Browning is another solid choice, featured in American Gods and Sucker Punch. Another great actress is Gemma Arterton, who’s done all kinds of great action projects. Any of these three actresses could make for fantastic Umbrella Academy villains.
Who would you cast in these roles? What other characters are you excited to see? Do you think they’ll get Andy Serkis to play Dr. Pogo? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Game of Thrones wastes no time into the action this season. The show has set up its endgame, and ‘Stormborn’ has the first big battle. Only two episodes in, Game of Thrones delivers what fans are dying for. The majority of the action is relegated to the B-characters, but it’s still exciting. Game of Thrones has united all of its characters, and ‘Stormborn’ begins pushing them at each other.
SPOILER WARNING: READ ON ONLY IF YOU’VE SEEN THE LATEST EPISODE OF GoT!!
The primary characters don’t do much but talk this episode. While it’s a little more boring, it’s a strong progression. While no serious changes in motivation occur, the conflict inches forward. Daenerys and Jon Snow are put onto the path of partnership. Sansa has control of the North, and Cersei’s plotting to retain power. This episode may be mostly dedicated to plotting, but it’s in pursuit of the show’s endgame.
The Grey Worm & Missandei scene is interesting, but a bit long. It’s one part touching moment, one part Game of Thrones meeting its female nudity quota. The relationship between the former slaves is one of the few purely nice relationships the show has. Seeing the two get together before battle is touching, even without seeing them have sex. While sex is a staple of Game of Thrones, and it is a nice moment, it makes the scene lag. It also seems like a set-up for the death of Grey Worm, who’s off to take Casterly Rock. If Game of Thrones likes anything as much as sex, it likes death. The scene is nice, but it heralds
The most interesting conflict in ‘Stormborn’ comes from Arya. Arya’s run-ins with both Hotpie and Nymeria prove how she’s evolved. Arya may be a card-carrying badass, but she’s not… well, Arya. Through her time in the House of Black and White, Arya never considered a true family reunion. Now that it’s become a real possibility, Arya has to weight who she was against who she’s become. Hopefully, Arya finds a way to rediscover her old charm, without losing her cool killer edge. Waiting for that personal conflict to resolve in intensely interesting.
The big sea battle this episode was intense, though not the most interesting. The conflict focuses mostly on Daenerys’ side character forces. The conflict is exciting to watch, but the stakes feel pretty low. Certainly, it’s a shocking development, and strikes a blow to Daenerys’ plans. However, the biggest characters who die are the Sand Snakes, who everyone hated in Season 5. Theon’s a proven coward once again, and Yara’s become a prisoner. It’s like when The Walking Dead whittles down its side cast every season. It’s an exciting conflict, but no major, lasting stakes.
They’re clearly pushing the side characters at each other, to buy time for the bigger plots to bloom. These side character fights have fewer stakes, but are still exciting. Plus, the primary plots are moving forward nonetheless. Everything is moving at a wonderful pace, whether through physical action, or strategic planning. Game of Thrones may focus more on side characters this episode, but it’s still exciting to watch.
The upcoming Syfy series Happy! has replaced Bobby Moynihan with comedian Patton Oswalt.
The change was announced on Saturday at Comic-Con, where it was immediately greeted with positive reception. The series is an adaptation of the Image Comics graphic novel by Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson, and will focus on Nick Sax, a man who gave up the charade of his corrupt tenure as a policeman to become a hitman. But in the midst of his alcoholism and being surrounded by sex, murder, drugs, and betrayal, Sax finds himself in the company of the titular character, a positive, imaginary, blue pegasus. The relentlessly happy horse will be played by Oswalt.
“We asked him if he wanted to do it, and he was like, ‘Fuck yeah.’ If you know Pat, this is right up his alley,” executive producer Brian Taylor said, addressing the scores in attendance at Comic-con. Oswalt is a renowned scene stealer, meaning that last part couldn’t be more true.
Moynihan, a Saturday Night Live alumnus, had to drop the project after realizing how busy his upcoming schedule had become. He recently left SNL to begin work on a Boyhood-style CBS comedy entitled My, Myself & I. He had been a cast member on the long-running sketch comedy series for nine years. Oswalt himself is quite a busy fellow, but his enthusiasm for the project appears to have trumped that.
Meloni, who was also at the panel, described the pleasure of acting opposite a cartoon character. “It’s fantastic. It’s awesome. They’re never late to set. They always know their lines. It’s really kind of nice because you get to control the scene. I will say it’s a luxury.”
Grant Morrison wrote the pilot for Happy! with Brian Taylor, who also directed the pilot. Patrick Macmanus will serve as its showrunner, with Taylor, Morrison, Neal Moritz, Pavun Shetty, and Toby Jaffe all signed on as executive producers.
What do you think? Are you happy to hear Oswalt replaced Moynihan?

A couple of days ago, a trailer for Triple Threat was released. The news came unexpectedly but you should recognize some of the faces in the trailer below. Of course, that’s only if you follow the martial arts genre.
What we know so far
A while back there were rumors of Scott Adkins joining Iko Uwais for ‘The Raid 3,’ which in the end was just that. What we have here instead is an ensemble cast of the best martial artists in entertainment right now.
Tony Jaa (Ong Bak, SPL 2), Iko Uwais (The Raid, The Raid 2: Berendal), Tiger Chen (Man of Tai Chi) are the eponymous triple threat and they face off against a trio of assassins consisting of Scott Adkins (Undisputed 2: Last Man Standing, Undisputed 3: Redemption), Michael Jai White (Blood and Bone, Never Back Down 2, Black Dynamite), and Michael Bisping (xXx: Return of Xander Cage).
Most of the cast has been involved in some of the best choreography ever made in movies. Ranging from Tony Jaa’s impressive display of Muay Thai and crazy acrobatics to the more brutal Silat of Iko Uwais to the solid speedy combination of Michael Jai White, we are in for a treat.
I haven’t seen anything from Jeeja Yanin since 2008 but trust me her skills are legit. It is an absolute pleasant surprise to see her back in action.
Personally, I cannot wait to go see this film. Since we’re being honest, this was the only trailer from San Diego Comic-Con that had me in a giddy state. Nothing else that has been announced since has shaken me to the core.
I took a break from reading Fairy Tail for a bit because I couldn’t see it getting any better than its latest chapter. I finally caved in and read them all in one go. You’re probably thinking that my opinion somehow changed as I read along right? Truth is it didn’t. I normally try to make one review per chapter or episode but literally nothing of substance was brought forth to warrant that from my part.
My opinion that it needed to die has only been reinforced by these chapters.
The story told in these chapters
Having waited for a bunch of parts to come out, there were expectations that they would at least have a cohesive narrative that would tie up loose ends decently. What we were met with was a story that went nowhere and instead destroyed every single idea put forth in previous chapters.
Chapter 538
Chapter 538 switches the story back to one of our main characters; Lucy. She played around with the book of END and rewrote the part where Natsu died. Just when we think she might be affected by some negative side effects, Gray uses the power of Ice Devil Slayer magic to purify her. Whatever, that sort of makes sense right? Natsu comes back they have a friendship moment, and then he disappears. Right there is when I felt a bit of the old Fairy Tail coming back, but my hopes were dashed against the stones in the next few parts.
Lucy always felt like a character that could do everything while also being the weakest character there ever was. It was a beautiful paradox at times, but that eventually became annoying as it was always a repeating cycle.
I honestly felt that Fairy Tail was going to kill its protagonist and it felt good since no one has the fortitude of spirit to end their story with death and destruction anymore.
Chapter 539
Chapter 539 was honestly the best chapter there was, and there’s a bizarre reason for that. The reason is that there’s almost no dialogue in it where the author can ruin the whole story. Acnologia, the Dragon King, makes his comeback because obviously, the ravines of time wouldn’t be able to hold him back because he can literally eat magic. This was pretty cool as all hope was lost for everyone and the dragon slayers were disappearing. The author finally made us feel things other than pure disgust for his work!
It looks cool right?
Chapter 540
Chapter 540 goes back to just breaking all of the progress made in 539. Ichiya and Anna get a revival for no good reason. The characters themselves don’t even know why they’re alive again. Turns out there are two battles going on between Fairy Tail and Acnologia’s dragon body and the Dragon slayers against Acnologia’s mind or something. Look by this point you can tell I kept reading to simply get closure.
This made no sense and there’s no explanation in the story for this travesty.
Chapter 541
541 is where the heroes hatch a plan to take down Acnologia’s dragon body by using a boat to cause it motion sickness and then Fairy Sphere to just trap it inside or something. It’s a hidden magic but it’s been inside a book in the FT library all along. I know it was supposed to be a serious moment but come on! Meanwhile, Acnologia’s spiritual body is curb stomping the dragon slayers with no effort on his part, but we know with absolute certainty they are going to turn it around. How can anyone take this seriously anymore?
Chapter 542
542 sees the terrible plan the team came up with torn to shreds. All Acnologia did was blow up the boats. The method to activating Fairy Sphere is also told to us. Are you ready to hear about how to activate it? Hold hands. That’s it. That’s all Fairy Sphere needed to pop off.
Yeah… so that’s just him blowing up boats.
Chapter 543
We got some backstory for Acnologia about how dragons ate his family, and that’s why he became angry at the world. The author probably didn’t care at this point honestly. Gray made an ice ship, and Wendy transfers all of the DS powers into Natsu. Remember to keep in mind for the next part that this is all still magic.
Chapter 544
The final chapter for this review is 544. Turns out FT didn’t have enough members to trap Acnologia so they fall into despair until some random girl named Meredith that I just can’t remember for the life of me shows up and says she linked up everyone on the continent. That’s enough of a boost to trap Acnologia’s dragon body, but for some reason it also affects his spiritual body. There was no mention or expectations that this was going to happen but okay. Seeing Acnologia unable to move Natsu gathers magic and punches him which kills him. Acnologia is strangely alright with everything and the power of friendship saves the day once again.
Final thoughts
Look it might seem as if I’m overly critical but there’s a reason to this madness. I was a fan once and felt that this could have been something amazing. Instead, the whole manga crumbled down halfway through and never really got back on its feet. This is what happens when you make your villain strong to the point that there’s no logical explanation as to how they are beaten at the end. Power levels should be respected unless you want a tragedy on your hands.
One of the biggest announcements coming out of San Diego Comic-Con 2017 was the confirmation of a Flashpoint film. While we don’t know the extent of how much the movie will tinker with the timeline, it sure seems like Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who played Thomas Wayne in Batman v Superman, is hinting at something big.
For reference, in the Flashpoint comic book storyline, Bruce Wayne’s dad becomes Batman, and his mom, Martha Wayne, becomes the Joker. In all likelihood, Morgan and Lauren Cohan will suit up as their respective characters for a portion of the film.
How do you feel about a Flashpoint film? Comment below, let us know.

Spider-Man probably has the most famous Rogues gallery in comics—only Batman can give him a run for his money. Spidey has so many villains that they’ve been able to form their own team, The Sinister Six, and they have rotating members, making them more like the Sinister 60. The last time we saw them was in Superior Foes of Spider-Man, only they were routinely missing a 6th member.
And they’re back! And all accounted for! Announced during the Cup O’ Joe panel at SDCC, the newest incarnation of the Sinister Six will debut in Spider-Man #234, taking the numbering from Bendis’s Ultimate Spider-Man run. Miles Morales will face off against the new Electro, Bombshell, The Spot, Hobgoblin, The Sandman, and…the Iron Spider?
Yep, the Iron Spider is back. When we last saw him, it was during the Avengers Initiative. A clone of a young superhero called MVP donned the Civil War-era Spider-Man costume. Who might be wearing the black and gold version of the Tony Stark designed suit is still a mystery.
“This is me. Kamala is me,” one of my students said. She described her parents, very religious and very protective. They routinely tried to set her up with the boys they approved of. Prayer and worship were routine. And instead of therapists, she and her siblings were told to see their religious leader. It would almost be exactly like Ms. Marvel’s experience if my student weren’t a white Christian American from the South. She’s also far from the only non-Muslim student to comment on how much they could relate to G. Willow Wilson’s Kamala Khan. Ms. Marvel Vol 1: No Normal is a class favorite every time I teach it. Many students end up buying the volumes that come after. Almost all of my students love the character.
Totes Relatable
Almost. Every so often I get a student who says “This is too politically correct. Muslims aren’t like this, really.” That’s an actual response from a student. They weren’t Muslim, and they didn’t know any Muslim people—by choice. While it would be easy to tie this kind of comment to the Trump sticker on his laptop that faces the entire class (it’s a discussion-based class, so we sit in a giant circle), but there were plenty of Trump students in the class who confronted him on that statement. But again, he’s not the only student who felt this way. While most students read about this Pakistani-American teenager and had that moment of “huh. We’re not different after all,” there are maybe 2% of students who actually don’t want to learn that they are very similar to the people they are taught to hate and fear.
In the same way, The Big Sick is also great for young Americans, especially students in college. While the movie is predominately a romantic dramedy (can’t call it a comedy when the love interest is in a coma and about to die for more than half the movie), it’s also a true story about Kumail Nanjiani’s life. Nanjiani spends the movie having a 30-year-old crisis. He doesn’t know what he believes, what he wants, what aspects of his culture are important to him, how to handle conflicts when people confront him about being Pakistani. He also takes it in stride, mostly. How do you know if a movie is well-written? It has 9/11 and ISIS jokes that work. His story is like most 30-year-old American males. Aside from the cultural significance of the film, it’s much like Garden State (but so much better).
Writing on a couch with a cute blonde…basically my entire twenties.
Okay, it’s time to get a little political before getting back to movies and comics. First-Year College students are obviously still learning about the world. They’re 18, at most 19. And what they don’t know about the world is not their fault—it’s because of their previous education (a different conversation for a different website). Even many of my adult students have a surprising lack of cultural awareness. What is great is that once they are exposed to another culture, they are almost immediately empathetic to them—when they see them as a hero. It’s why having heroes of different races, genders, religions, and sexualities are so important. Another classroom favorite? The Imitation Game. While the benefit of kids seeing heroes of various kinds is important, it’s just as important for adults of all ages.
Which brings us back to Ms. Marvel and Kumail Nanjiani, a Pakistani-American superhero, and a Pakistani comedian. It’s no secret that hate crimes have increased over the last two years. There is more Islamophobia now than there was after 9/11. A primary reason for that is education. One of the first things George W. Bush made clear after the attacks was that Islam was not to blame:
“The face of terror is not the true faith of Islam. That’s not what Islam is all about. Islam is peace. These terrorists don’t represent peace. They represent evil and war.”
But since then, how has American culture portrayed Muslims? The show 24 used Muslim characters as their terrorist villains so often, they had to air a disclaimer starring Kiefer Sutherland explaining that not all Muslims are evil. The News media focuses almost only on terrorist attacks committed by Muslims, even though, domestically, they are outranked by White terrorists. And even when a politician acknowledges White terrorism, they are dismissive about it.
Is it any surprise that when my students read Ms. Marvel, they are almost blindsided that Kamala is just a regular American teenager? In fact, many of them comment on how similar she is to Peter Parker, another awkward American teenager before and after getting superpowers. Their cultural context for Muslims is fear and not much else. Even one of the few Muslim heroes in pop culture, Sayid from Lost, tortured people when he was an Iraqi soldier. Kamala Khan blindsides them by how much she isn’t different from them.
Expect for when she’s a giant, that is.
When I teach my pop culture class next spring, I’ll include The Big Sick. I already know that their reaction will be very similar, and I’m hoping the fact that the film is based on Kumail Nanjiani’s real experience will make them feel even more connected to him and the movie. At the same time, Ms. Marvel and The Big Sick together create a framework for them. Ms. Marvel is where they’re coming from—high school teenagers—and The Big Sick is where they are going—adults trying to find their identity while establishing their careers. Being able to see themselves in these works, with characters who might not look like them, is how empathy is created. In an era othering is prominent, Ms. Marvel and Nanjiani don’t—as a student described Kamala—feel like “others.” That’s the “ding” moment that students have when they are exposed to characters like these. As another student said, “Othering is bulls**t” (ah, college classes). Exactly. The young student simultaneously realized how he characterized Muslims, and how absurd he was for doing that. But again—it’s what he was taught.
That’s why Ms. Marvel and The Big Sick are perfect for college students. They can undo 20 years of poor cultural education in a matter of hours. That’s powerful. That will change them for life, and make them better people.
