‘Rick and Morty’ Season 3 Episode 6 Review: Rest and Ricklaxation

Monkeys Fighting Robots

There Is No Ricklaxation For Rick and Morty!

Something magical is happening with Season 3 of Rick and Morty. Each episode is wilder and more thought-provoking than the last. This week’s episode titled “Rest and Ricklaxation” isn’t any different. There is no downtime in this Schwifty universe!

The cold open for “Rest and Ricklaxation” is one of the best to date. Morty overhears that his unrequited crush Jessica is finally single, so he goes in for the kill. Before he stumbles over his words, Rick rushes in and pulls Morty away for another adventure. What makes this one so great is what we don’t see. Before going on this mission, Morty makes complaints about missing out on his normal life. Rick promises that this would only take 20 minutes, but we see a title card saying “Six Days Later.” The duo looks rough and has obviously been through a grueling journey. So much for a quick “in and out” adventure.

In the first 5 minutes of the episode, you see the themes of character growth still applying. Season 3 is all about showing different sides to the familiar characters. Rick even admits for the first time that he wasn’t in control of a situation! Admitting something like that is something that would never occur in Season 1. This moment leads both of them to a complete mental break, and Rick calls for a vacation.

Sadly the restful break doesn’t last long.

“If I Can’t Trap You In A Toxic World, I’ll Make The Whole World Toxic”
-Toxic Rick

Rick and Morty end up in an alien day spa, and of course, Rick gets the pair into something dark. They go into detoxifier, which is just a horrific surreal toxic world. Things get split between the toxic and healthy version of the pair. Can’t help but think that things would be easier for them if they just want to a spa on Earth.

Since Rick and Morty’s good and bad qualities are split, the bad obvious try to take over. At first, they want to take over the bodies, but then it is the world. Toxic Rick is a liar, and that shocks the good Rick. It shows that even Rick has a side of him that ignores his bad qualities. Toxic Morty is the fragile and weak Morty that was prevalent in the first season. The “healthy” Morty is the badass and aggressive Morty the viewers see as of late. Funny to see how each pairing works when certain personality traits are gone.

There’s a battle of good and evil, but in the end, it teaches the lesson that both are needed. It isn’t a simple lesson to learn as the “good” Morty is still a little annoying. For once Rick seems to things together, and Morty is still trying to find his own. Oddly, finding his means, Morty uses his lack of conscience to be a stockbroker. Even with complete freedom, Morty is still annoying. Like father, like son.

Final Thoughts:

“Pickle Rick” remains the best episode of Season 3, but “Rest and Ricklaxation” is a close second. Everything feels dark and twisted, but with the fun edge that Rick and Morty provides. It also works as a standalone episode that explores darkness in all of us, but wouldn’t work if the season didn’t follow a theme of self-exploration.

Rick puts it correctly saying you need the bad parts to become a fully rounded person. They want to remove the negatives from themselves instead of just facing it head-on. While Rick stated in “Pickle Rick” that he doesn’t need therapy, his realizations this season are somewhat profound. He should go into business for himself with dark reality lessons.

The world of Rick and Morty can be so vast that “scaled back” episodes like this feel refreshing. The chemistry between these two is what the show is all about, and no matter how crazy things may get, it’s always good to see these two are constant.

What did you think of this episode of Rick and Morty?

Art and Charity With the Stars of Supernatural and The SPN Family

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Supernatural stars are calling on the SPN Family for aid. As Texas and Louisiana suffer under the heavy beat of Hurricane Harvey, the nonprofit known as Random Acts founded by Supernatural star Misha Collins has teamed up with another business founded by Supernatural star Jensen Ackles known as Family Business Beer Company. Together they are attempting to raise much needed funds for those who are going to need aid very soon due to being in the path of the storm.

Help Needed

Hurricane Harvey has done an abundance of damage. The flooding is starting to really take its toll on residents who were not able to evacuate. Currently on crowdrise.com is a Texas Flood and Hurricane Relief Fund promising to give 100% of the proceeds to victims in need cosponsored by Random Acts and Family Business Beer Company.

Saving People Isn’t Just the Day Job

The leads of Supernatural, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles are native Texans and have their home bases and families there. As a displaced Texan I can’t help but want to bring light to what is happening.  In so many situations a little help from a lot of people goes a long way. Which is something that is not new to the actors that are a part of the 12 season show about to embark on its 13th season on October 12th on the CW network.

Random Acts and GISHWHES

Recently with the advent of the latest and last GISHWHES I explored the Random Acts charity. This nonprofit raises money for a variety of causes both locally and abroad. The website details all of the charity that has been committed in its name. Also it features people who have expanded the ideas of the charity in their own lives. It calls attention to the SPNFamily moniker as fans of the show have often called on the ‘family’ to help when others are in crisis.

The SPN Family

One of the more interesting aspects of this is the fact that for years without a lot of fanfare or coverage the SPN Family has been practicing the preaching of their favorite characters of this television franchise.  When searching under the #SPNfamily twitter tag an abundance of charity has been taking place.  The fan base always striving to honor the family business of ‘saving people’ usually delivers in times of crisis.

Check your social media feeds. Retweet and share information to aid people needing help and needing to be rescued. Its the SPN Family way.

‘Lucifer’ – Tom Welling, ‘I Definitely Didn’t Want To Play Clark Kent Again’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

For a generation, Tom Welling represents Clark Kent. For Welling that was good and bad, he had a ten year run on ‘Smallville, ‘ but his acting career never out grew that small midwestern town. This fall the actor returns to the DC Comics television universe with his role as Marcus Pierce on FOX’s ‘Lucifer.’

Check out the first image below, via EW:

Marcus Pierce is an accomplished police lieutenant and possible foil for Lucifer. Welling’s foil still appears to be Clark Kent.

“I definitely didn’t want to play Clark Kent again. The great thing about Clark is he didn’t know who he was and he didn’t know what he was supposed to do with what he had and his abilities. This character very much knows what he’s capable of and knows what he wants to do and knows how to do it, so as much fun as that is to play, it wasn’t necessarily because of Clark that I chose this character. It was so many more factors than just, ‘I don’t want play Clark again,’ but I’d be lying if I was saying that I do not enjoy playing something very different for sure,” said Welling to EW.

Welling needs to get that Superman monkey off his back!

‘Lucifer’ stars Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Kevin Alejandro, D.B. Woodside, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Scarlett Estevez, Rachael Harris, and returns to FOX on October 2.

Bruce Wayne Steps Closer To Batman In ‘Gotham’ Season 4 Trailer

Monkeys Fighting Robots

‘Gotham’ looks to make a huge leap in season four as a masked Bruce Wayne hits the roof tops of Gotham City. Fox released a teaser for the new season Sunday afternoon – ‘A Dark Knight.’

16-year-old David Mazouz will grow up quickly to save the FOX series. The original concept of the show was to focus on Ben McKenzie’s James Gordon and his rise to commissioner, but a philosophical change has been made. Only time will tell if it was the right decision. The first season of ‘Gotham’ averaged 7.56 million viewers, but that number has been slashed over the next two seasons. The season three finale brought 3.03 million viewers to the living room. ‘Gotham’ was on the bubble of cancellation last year, look for more bold moves in season four to regain the audience.

‘Gotham’ returns to FOX on a new night September 21.

Will Too Many Trailers Ruin ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ ???

Monkeys Fighting Robots

A new TV spot aired for ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ this past weekend and the teaser gave viewers the best look at the Thor vs. Hulk fight. Marvel Studios needs to tread carefully with its marketing as there is a fine line between teasing a film and spoiling a movie. We still have nine more weeks till the movie comes out!

With the film sitting at 100 minutes according to director Taika Waititi, ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ is a fast-paced action adventure for the ages. For every comic book nerd, the arena fight between Hulk and Thor is the main event and why we will go see the film multiple times, so please stop with the footage. Instead, showcase the music, the colors, the amazing universe Waititi created. Hype the fight, but don’t show the fight.

Here’s the teaser below, you decide if the Marvel Studios marketing team needs to hold back.

About ‘Thor: Ragnarok’:

Thor’s world is about to explode in Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok. His devious brother, Loki, has taken over Asgard, the powerful Hela has emerged to steal the throne for herself and Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe. To escape captivity and save his home from imminent destruction, Thor must first win a deadly alien contest by defeating his former ally and fellow Avengers… The Incredible Hulk!

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo, and Sir Anthony Hopkins. Taika Waititi directs with Kevin Feige producing the film.

‘Jay and Silent Bob Reboot’ Starts Filming This Fall

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Filmmaker Kevin Smith announced on Twitter Thursday, the ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’ sequel will start production this fall. The potential title is ‘Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.’

August 24, 2001, ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’ hit theaters and brought in a world wide gross of $33.8 million and became the highest grossing film in the ‘Clerks’ franchise. The feature length dick-and-fart joke sits a 53% on Rotten Tomatoes from 151 critics.

‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’ was written and directed by Smith, and stars Jason Mewes, Ben Affleck, Shannon Elizabeth, Eliza Dushku, Ali Larter, Will Ferrell, Jason Lee, Judd Nelson, George Carlin, Carrie Fisher, Seann William Scott, Mark Hamill, Tracy Morgan, Matt Damon, and Chris Rock.

Smith has never been a box office draw and that is perplexing, as his films average $18.8 million. He’s able to attract top tier talent for his projects and Smith’s movies have gone on to represent a generation. Yet, a very small group of people support his films.

Why do you think Kevin Smith’s films do not connect with a broad audience? Comment below.

Humans Of New York Is Getting A Facebook TV Series

Monkeys Fighting Robots

If you’re not familiar with the photo-blog Humans Of New York, now would be a good time to start!   Facebook will be turning the popular blog into a docuseries.  Currently internet streaming seems to be a giving cable and satellite provides a run for their money.  We have top dogs like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon boasting out award winning shows.  Facebook can can now be added to the list of streaming companies.

The creator of HONY, Brandon Stanton expressed his gratitude about the upcoming show via Facebook,

“Early on I realized that video would add a deeper layer to Humans of New York. At the heart of all these posts are the conversations themselves. I’m often deeply moved by the people I meet. Or they make me laugh. Or they make me think. And I always do my best to recreate the experience through photos and words. But I always knew that video would provide the closest thing to ‘actually being there.’ So for the last four years, I’ve filmed 1200 interviews on the streets of New York. (With the help of an extremely talented cinematographer named Michael Crommett.) Instead of posting these videos one day at a time, I held onto them so that one day I could combine them into something special. My goal was not to make a television show based on Humans of New York. I wanted the television show to *be* Humans of New York. I think I came pretty close. And I think/hope you will love it. Humans of New York, the series, will premiere next week on Watch– Facebook’s new platform for shows.”

So far this isn’t the first show Facebook will be producing.  Earlier this year it was announced former NFL player LaVar Ball and his family are getting their own reality show.

Humans Of New York is set to premiere next week on the Watch On Facebook video platform.  Check out the trailer below!

‘Batman: Gotham By Gaslight’ Animated Movie Footage Has Leaked

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Batman: Gotham By Gaslight is considered the first true ‘Elseworlds‘ story, and is often cited as a classic of that subgenre. Written by Brian Augustyn and illustrated by Mike Mignola, the standalone graphic novel proposes a world where Batman emerged in the Victorian era and investigated the Jack The Ripper Murders. It really is a fantastic book and one great high concept.

WB Animation recently announced it as their next project and now some featurette footage has leaked. Check it out below.

Looks pretty cool I think. And after the horrible recent Batman and Harley Quinn, we need another GOOD DC animated film. What do you guys think? Will it translate well from page to screen? Comment and discuss below!
