New ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Image Shows Finn And Rose In Canto Bight

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Empire Magazine has revealed a new image from Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The new picture shows Finn (John Boyega) and Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) in the casino city Canto Bight. Unlike most of the previous Star Wars locations, Canto Bight displays a luxurious spot in the galaxy. According to Empire, this Finn and Rose find themselves on a “vital” mission among some of the galaxy’s most high profile individuals.

“I wanted a new environment that was like dunking your head in a cool bath of water, right in the middle of the movie,” Johnson tells Empire. “Apart from the prequels, all the touchstones that make something feel like Star Wars have to do with griminess and dirt. I wanted to do something completely different.”

Johnson also discusses what it was like to join a franchise like Star Wars, saying that the entire trilogy wasn’t already planned when he joined the project.

“The perception of these films is that they’re all planned out on a secret sheet of paper in advance, but that’s just not the case,” he says. “I wasn’t given an outline of where it goes or even a list of things to hit. It really was just, ‘Okay, what’s next?’”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi lands in theatres on December 14, 2017!

‘Made Men’ #1 Starts The Series With A Bang!

Monkeys Fighting Robots

You don’t know Jutte Shelley, but you might know her family. Before she was a Shelley, she was a Frankenstein. These days, she’s a Detroit Special Ops officer. At least she was, until she and her entire team were ambushed during what should have been a routine call. Jutte watched as, one by one, her friends were gunned down. And then, in a flurry of bullets, Jutte fell too. But Jutte isn’t like other people. She’s a Frankenstein. And she knows all her family’s secrets. Guess who’s getting the gang back together?

Writing

This series throws you right into the middle of intense action from the first page. Writer Paul Tobin seemed to be channeling a bit of Robocop when he wrote this, as the intense gunfight in the first few pages seem to be a homage to the film. Or maybe any scene involving an intense shootout with police brings on this reflection.

From there though, Made Men offers a new look into the legend behind Frankenstein and his creations. The first issue is bit heavy on the exposition but still offers a captivating character and an interesting world surrounding her. The issue doesn’t flesh out the personalities and motivations of the other characters in Jutte’s team, but it makes you want to know more about what they were like before the events of this comic.

Made Men #1

Artwork

The art team of Arjuna Susini on art and Gonzalo Duarte doing colors makes for a very impressive combination. The excessive amounts of gore and action which they employed through the issue is shocking but not overused. Instead, thanks to lots of good details added to each panel the violence comes off as pure art.

Conclusion

Made Men #1 is the start of something big. The series offers a lot of possibilities moving forward thanks to the interesting concept and engrossing artwork. The issue also seems to offer a twist at the end which was subtle hinted at throughout the book. Again though, if you couldn’t tell from the reference to Robocop, this book is not for the faint of heart.

Preacher Feature: On Your Knees

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Preacher Feature is a weekly analysis of the AMC show Preacher based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. In this column, we will give a breakdown of the events from the previous night’s show, including how they relate to the comics, and speculate as to what’s going on and what might be coming up. This is to say that there will be spoilers, both actual and potential. If you have not yet watched the episode in question or are watching the show without reading the comics and don’t want to have any foreknowledge of what might happen to Jesse and company, then you would do well to stop reading this now.

Looking to get caught up?  Here’s a link to last week’s article.

Questions and Answers

Heading into “On Your Knees”, the penultimate episode of the season, Preacher fans have a lot of questions:

  • Why did Genesis not work when Jesse tried to use the Word (Jesse’s power to make anyone who hears him obey his commands) on the receptionist? (dunno)
  • When will we find out what happened with the Saint of Killers? (now)
  • How much do I enjoy using the word ‘penultimate?’ (a bunch!)

So, let’s get right into it.  After confronting his greatest fears (Tracy Loach, a pervy scout leader, and his father), Eugene is one step closer to making good his escape from Hell.  I’m glad everyone’s favorite arse-faced teenager will soon be back on Earth, but I’m worried about the company he keeps (Hitler).

After a flashback to the Saint’s life “before the world shook to the thunder of his guns”, we find out that The Grail pulled the armored car from the swamp before Jesse and Tulip got the chance.  The Saint wants nothing more than to see his wife and daughter again in Heaven.  Hoover lets him know that isn’t going to be an option, but that the Grail still has something to offer if the Saint works with them.

The Saint of Killers may not be at full strength, but what strength he has is still enough to take out Tulip, Denis, and Cassidy on his way to Jesse.  He gets Jesse on his knees and is about to scalp him when the agents of Hell appear to call him back to perdition.  Ms. Mannering (Hell’s stern-faced caretaker) tells Jesse he’s lucky to have a friend like Herr Starr, so it appears that the Grail let the Saint out just to convince Jesse that they are on his side, in order to convince Jesse to become the Grail’s Messiah.

Instead of a hospital, Tulip and Cass end up in the office of Herr Starr, who is still trying to tear the group apart in order to more easily control Jesse.  Starr tells the two that he plans to have Jesse become the Messiah.  Feeling as though Jesse is leaving them behind, Cassidy and Tulip walk out on him.  The episode closes with Starr kneeling before Jesse.

Questions:

Why doesn’t the Word work on the Saint?  In “Sokosha” Jesse removed a part of his soul and gave it to the formerly soulless Saint, which allowed Jesse to use the Word to control him.  It looked like Hoover was reading the manual for the soul extraction machine, so my guess is he removed it, which means the Grail now owns 1% of Jesse Custer’s soul.

What does Satan want to talk to the Saint about?

Easter Eggs/Connections to the Comics:

A fake autobiography of former Vice President Dan Quayle entitled “The Future Will Be Better Tomorrow” falls on the floor during Cassidy’s “fight” with the Saint.

The Saint tells a story about a scalp hunter who described to him the sound scalping someone makes.  In the comics, the Saint was a scalp hunter himself before he met his wife.

Ms. Mannering refers to the Saint of Killers as William.

Best Line:

“God is gone…from our hearts” – The Pope

Mark Ruffalo Previews The Battle Between Hulk & Thor In ‘Ragnarok’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In a recent Instagram post, Mark Ruffalo teased the forthcoming brawl between Hulk and Thor in Thor: Ragnarok.

Wait what? Who smashed who? The fight of the century is coming.

While the two characters faced off in 2012’s The Avengers, a winner was not declared; in terms of Ragnarok, it remains to be seen regarding which hero will come out on top.

With so many storylines seemingly taking place in the film, it’s likely that the feud between these two won’t last for very long.

“In Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Ragnarok”, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok – the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization – at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladictorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger – the Incredible Hulk!”

Thor: Ragnarok is directed by Taika Waititi and stars, along with Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Cate Blanchett, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Benedict Cumberbatch, Anthony Hopkins, and Jeff Goldblum.

Star Wars Episode IX Loses Director Colin Trevorrow

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Disney and Lucasfilm announced the exit of Star Wars: Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow on Tuesday.

The following statement was issued by Lucasfilm on the official Star Wars site:

“Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on Star Wars: Episode IX. Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon.”

Trevorrow’s sudden exit from the film should feel all too familiar. Not so long ago, Phil Lord and Chris Miller left the Star Wars spinoff project Han Solo, due to similarly cited reasons. Ron Howard stepped in to replace them, and is currently in the process of finishing filming.

The biggest question in galaxy is now, “Who will replace Trevorrow?” Joe Johnston’s (Captain America: The First Avenger) name has been floated before, having previously worked with George Lucas on the Star Wars saga. Another possibility is Howard, perhaps as a reward for stepping in on Solo.

Whoever does end up taking the job will have an uphill battle. Star Wars has been plagued with directorial problems since The Force Awakens. The franchise will undoubtedly survive this next bump in the road. Nonetheless, things certainly aren’t as stable as Disney – or fans – would hope.

Star Wars News: BB-9E Announced As Newest Droid

Monkeys Fighting Robots

For the second year in a row, Disney and Star Wars celebrated “Force Friday” with all new merchandise. This year, it’s The Last Jedi‘s turn for toys and collectibles galore. Along with the already-popular Porgs, BB-9E emerged as the newest character from The Last Jedi, according to Variety.

BB-9E Sphero
New High-end “Force Friday” toys from Sphero

Does the “E” stand for Evil?

BB-9E looks like an evil reflection of BB-8. The roly-poly droid that stole everyone’s hearts in The Force Awakens will apparently met his match in The Last Jedi. If his black and grey casing wasn’t menacing enough, he’s also got a laser-red eye with serious Hal vibes, a minor key beep pattern, and an evil employer. BB-9E is “part of the Astromech unit of the First Order that keep their starships and machinery operational.” Hal bb-9e predecessor 2001So, yeah, whether or not the E is SUPPOSED to stand for “evil” it’s a pretty easy association.

Porgs versus BB-9E

BB-8 has elicited squeals from pretty much every Star Wars fan since well before The Force Awakens released in theatres. Since then, he’s made it on to hats and bags and pjs and cereal boxes and…pretty much if a thing exists, a BB-8 version of the thing also exists.

The Last Jedi continues the trend with both Porgs and BB-9E. Perhaps the darker droid will off-set the Ewok effect that the Porgs are sure to cause. Perhaps it’s just to give BB-8 a droid buddy, which seems possible based on the Star Wars “blip” from their official twitter (see above). Maybe someone will reprogram BB-9E like K2-SO.

What’s your theory on BB-9E? Let us know in the comments below.

Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi releases in the US on December 15th, 2017. ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ – Snoke Will Remain A Mystery According To Rian Johnson

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Unlike the two previous trilogies, the current Star War trilogy has the rise of a hero and a villain. Rey will team up with Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren will continue to serve Supreme Leader Snoke.

The director of ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Rian Johnson, talked about how to keep Snoke this powerful unknown force, but fans aren’t going to like it.

“We got the whole story of Palpatine’s rise to power in the prequels, but in the original films he’s exactly what he needs to be, which is just ‘The Emperor.’ He’s a dark force: the scary thing behind the thing. That was entirely how I approached Snoke. I wasn’t interested in explaining where he came from or telling his history, except where it serves this story,” said Johnson to Empire.

Johnson’s response means we are not going to know anything new by the end of ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi.’ The mystery will continue into Episode IX. Johnson’s choice makes filmmaking sense to build tension and keep the questions building, but we are in a now society and can’t wait.

What do you think about Johnson’s story choice? Comment below.
