James Gunn Fired By Disney, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Needs A New Director

Monkeys Fighting Robots

This is a breaking news story and will be updated with new information.

According to Deadline, James Gunn has been removed as director of the Guardians Of The Galaxy series after a batch of old social media dispatches were unearthed that touched on areas like pedophilia and rape.

Here is a link to Mike Cernovich’s website where Cernovich unearths all the tweets – James Gunn Endorses Pedophilia in 10,000 Deleted Tweets

Disney put out a statement this afternoon as well.

“The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him,” said Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn.

Gunn posted a Twitter response:

Many people who have followed my career know when I started, I viewed myself as a provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo. As I have discussed publicly many times, as I’ve developed as a person, so has my work and my humor.

It’s not to say I’m better, but I am very, very different than I was a few years ago; today I try to root my work in love and connection and less in anger. My days saying something just because it’s shocking and trying to get a reaction are over.

In the past, I have apologized for humor of mine that hurt people. I truly felt sorry and meant every word of my apologies.

For the record, when I made these shocking jokes, I wasn’t living them out. I know this is a weird statement to make, and seems obvious, but, still, here I am, saying it.

Anyway, that’s the completely honest truth: I used to make a lot of offensive jokes. I don’t anymore. I don’t blame my past self for this, but I like myself more and feel like a more full human being and creator today. Love you to you all.

The tweets found by Cernovich are a big budget career killer for Gunn, he will go dark for a couple of years but will eventually return.

Shudder Gets Green Light to Adapt CREEPSHOW Series

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The Creepshow revival is a go, courtesy of the streaming service, Shudder, in conjunction with The Walking Dead Executive Producer Greg Nicotero.

The horror makeup wizard, Nicotero, will develop a series based on the classic horror film anthology, which sprung onto the scene in 1982, with Creepshow (trailer), and again in 1987, with Creepshow 2 (trailer). Though, let’s not also forget Creepshow 3, which popped up in 2006! The TWD producer will supervise and oversee the show’s creative elements.

The original film paid an homage to the horror comics of the 1950s, which was not only written, but also directed by two horror legends in Stephen King and George A. Romero.

Creepshow is one of the most beloved and iconic horror anthologies from two masters of the genre, George A. Romero and Stephen King,” Shudder general manager Craig Engler said. “We’re thrilled to continue their legacy with another master of horror, Greg Nicotero, as we bring a new Creepshow TV series exclusively to Shudder members.”

The new series, which is scheduled to debut in 2019 on the streaming service owned by AMC, will feature episodic original stories, each directed by a different filmmaker, with Nicotero spearheading the first episode.

Review: The Truth Comes Out in CLOAK & DAGGER “Funhouse Mirrors”

Monkeys Fighting Robots

A disaster is coming.  It’s in the cards.

Auntie Chantelle (Angela Davis) knows something is amiss.  In her reading for the city, she explains that you have to examine the past and present to determine the future.  You have to understand the cycle.

New Orleans is on a “rollercoaster of destruction and rebirth,” according to Chantelle.  She’s hoping that this read will break the cycle, but two cards have come up the same each time. The “Divine Pairing.”

We find Tandy (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph) wanting to worm their way into their intels’ workplaces. Tandy poses as an intern with Roxxon to see what Mina Hess (Ally Maki) is up to, while Tyrone thinks that he can figure out what Detective Connors (J.D. Evermore) is doing by getting close to his brother’s friend Duane (Dalon J. Holland).

Tandy, pulling a Clark Kent by adding a pair of glasses to her ensemble, easily weasels her way into Mina’s world. By posing as an intern, Tandy uses the knowledge that he father instilled in her to discuss the rig and current drilling work. She finds a flaw in the pressure relief system, which proves that Roxxon is one of those stingy corporations that like to cut corners to save a buck. Could Tandy have potentially saved a catastrophe?

Mina’s not stupid, not by any means. Your typical college intern doesn’t know the information that Tandy is spouting out. It’s not long before Mina figures out that “Liz” is really Tandy Bowen. I was surprised when Mina was open to allowing Tandy to speak with her father, but with his mental condition, I guess she figured that it wouldn’t hurt. A touch of the hand puts Tandy into Ivan Hess’s (Tim Kang) mind only to find that his hopes are limited, and his fears are hidden behind the rig’s door.

Tyrone’s investigations lead him down a much more dangerous path. After being denied a job from Duane, he takes matters into his own hands. He takes Tandy’s advice: make an opening and take it. He gets his wish, he’s gotten close to Connors… within gunshot range. His hatred of Connors is fueled by the “drug bust” gone wrong, leaving Tyrone with another untimely loss to deal with.  His innocence and vulnerability are radiating, and there’s no physical way that Tandy can comfort her friend.

The answers that Tandy and Tyrone seek are coming to light, but at what cost? Is closure worth what they’re putting themselves through?

Dave Filoni Gets His Seventh Season Of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS

Monkeys Fighting Robots

San Diego Comic-Con International is here and with it comes big announcements. Leading the way Disney and Lucasfilm Thursday afternoon resurrected Star Wars: The Clone Wars for the seventh season which will be available on Disney’s Direct-to-Consumer Streaming Service.

“I honestly didn’t think we would ever have the opportunity to return to The Clone Wars. Thanks to the relentless fan support and the team behind Disney’s direct-to-consumer streaming service, we will now get to tell more of those stories. We feel a tremendous responsibility to make something that lives up to the legacy that George Lucas created with the original series, and I think our team, many of whom worked on the show from the beginning, has risen to the challenge,” said Dave Filoni Supervising Director of the series.

If you don’t know who Filoni is, watch this clip from Star Wars Celebration. It’s the most passionate I’ve witnessed a creator be about his or her project.

According to Lucasfilm, the new Clone Wars episodes will continue the storylines introduced in the original series, which explored the events leading up to Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. The series will see the return of classic characters Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi as well as fan-favorites Ahsoka Tano and Captain Rex. The new episodes will debut on Disney’s direct-to-consumer streaming service.

Watch the Season Seven trailer below:

Marvel Still Trying To Fix CAPTAIN MARVEL

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Ever since the tragically awful Civil War II, Marvel has had a major Captain Marvel problem. This event ruined Carol Danvers and no creator has been able to reel her back in since. The Life Of Captain Marvel goes back to Carol’s origin, trying to get our beloved Captain Danvers back on track.

Life of Captain Marvel 1 cvr

***SPOILERS LIE AHEAD***

Writer Margaret Stohl is back again, she wrote the preceding Marvel Legacy Captain Marvel series. This time we take a different route, diving into Carol’s childhood and family issues. Now that Danvers is a member of the current Avengers team, she seems to staying put on Earth.

Captain Marvel starts having an aggressive panic attack of sorts, stemming from memories of her abusive father she can’t shake. She goes back home to New England in an attempt to tackle these demons and apparently take a break from her superhero duties.

Carol should be Marvel’s female Superman and I don’t think this is the time for this story if that’s the goal.

She takes herself off the shelf for nine months to take care of her brother. During her stay, she uncovers a  mystery possibly linking her father to her superpower origin. This story doesn’t exactly inject a bright energy into the character, but it’s definitely more interesting than Carol being an inexcusable asshole (Civil War II).

Margaret Stohl writes a good Carol, she has been steadily re-configuring the character’s priorities and attitude for the better. That being said, this story doesn’t make a great case for being crucial reading for anyone outside of die-hard Captain Marvel fans. It’s not that it’s a bad script, there’s just nothing to really grab the reader.

We’re still desperately waiting for our bright and brave Captain Marvel to have another straight-up superhero comic book. Her space adventures with Alpha Flight were also great but that situation went through too many creative changes and got lost along the way–which is a real shame.

The Life Of Captain Marvel #1 features artists Carlos Pacheco and Marguerite Sauvage, inker Rafael Fonteriz, and colorist Marcio Menyz. The hand-off between our two pencillers, switching between childhood flashbacks and today, is smooth and effective. Their styles aren’t drastically different so the transitions rely more on the color and ink.

Oddly enough, both artists have a few questionable panels. Some of the closeups on Carol and the other characters look wonky and inconsistent.

This introductory issue isn’t very loud or exciting, but it’s potentially an interesting retcon for longtime Captain Marvel fans. Marvel is still struggling to make Carol a pillar of their forefront again, which starts getting real interesting the closer we get to the Captain Marvel film.

If you’re looking for a big, stunning course correction for Carol, this may not be it. Instead, you’ll find a quieter mystery about Carol’s dark upbringing that could end up being a surprise hit.

This issue wasn’t great, just fine. That’s the problem, Carol should be Marvel’s female Superman and I don’t think this is the time for this story if that’s the goal. Captain Marvel has all the potential and characteristics needed to lead the way, just not the opportunity. It’s taking so long to dig her out of this hole, with so many failed relaunches along the way.

It shouldn’t have to come to this but perhaps it’ll take Brie Larson’s portrayal on screen to finally give Carol the glowing attention she deserves.
