Why Universal’s Monster Universe is Deeply Concerning

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Universal’s Monster Universe makes sense on a surface level. As intellectual properties go the way of Marvel, creating shared universes and tying films in with one another, the idea of bringing Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, and The Creature from The Black Lagoon together in an expansive world all their own is compelling. At least it is to me, someone who grew up loving the Universal monsters and their entire catalogue.

Having these iconic characters cross over in each other’s films was popular when they were dominating Hollywood in the 40s and 50. From House of Dracula to my personal favorite crossover, Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man, the monsters spent time in each other’s worlds on occasion, making this new shared universe a sensible, almost foregone conclusion for anyone paying attention. Universal’s Monster Universe was announced prior to the release of Dracula Untold (more on that in a moment) last year, and the mere thought of an updated world of these characters I so admired as a youth was a thrilling prospect. Then, Dracula Untold came out, and turned out to be a soggy peg to kickstart this universe.

Dracula Untold

Dracula Untold starred Game of Thrones alum Charles Dance, and was more concerned with action and CGI than telling any sort of relevant, compelling origin story. It came and went without so much as a whimper at the box office, almost singlehandedly killing all momentum Universal’s Monster Universe had gained by merely being announced. Following the dreary Dracula Untold origin story, news filtered out that maybe the origin story was not the genesis of the new universe, that The Mummy in 2017 would kick things off instead. It is still unclear, because reshoots on Dracula Untold were said to be added to include it in the universe. Everything sounds like a mess right now, but let’s say for the sake of clarity that Dracula Untold, and the upcoming Victor Frankenstein, are simply one-off films, and the shared universe begins with The Mummy in March of 2017.

What is the tonal direction of Universal’s Monster Universe? Reports claimed that action would be the status quo this time around, not horror. Huge mistake, so huge in fact that Alex Kurtzman, head screenwriter, recently clarified that these films will, in fact, focus more on the horror side of things in an attempt to quell fan concerns:

“Yeah, I think it’s a fair response and it’s actually not — I think there was some lost in translation quality to the way it was received, because I promise you there will be horror in these movies. It is our life goal to make a horror movie. The tricky part is actually how you combine horror with either adventure or suspense or action and be true to all the genres together. In some way, Mummy, dating all the way back to the Karloff movie, was the first to do that. It was the first to combine horror with — I wouldn’t say action, but certainly a lot of suspense. So it’s more about how you blend the different elements and stay true to each one, but there will definitely be horror in the monster movies…We will hopefully serve it up good and plenty.”

That’s all well and good, but let’s back up a moment. Alex Kurtzman is the man in charge, along with Chris Morgan. Kurtzman’s most notable screenwriting credit includes Michael Bay’s Transformers, and Morgan is a child of the Fast and Furious franchise; both heavy action franchises. And while I don’t mean to dismiss Kurtzman as a writer, or Morgan – The Furious movies are great in their own right – these don’t feel like the right men to tell a story focusing on horror instead of “epic action adventure” storytelling. It is an odd fit, and doesn’t ease my concerns in the slightest.

Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man

These characters in Universal’s monster catalogue are tragic creations, full of pathos and desperation. From Frankenstein’s Monster, to the troubled plight of Lawrence Tablot in The Wolf Man, to the misunderstood Gill Man, these monsters work to speak on certain emotions and situations. The Invisible Man deals with madness and power, The Mummy tells a love story; then there is Dracula, the oldest story of them all, immortalized by Bela Lugosi’s romanticized portrayal of the Prince of Darkness. These are rich characters who belong in macabre, gotcha tales, not action adventure films. We already had our Van Helsing, and we know how that turned out.

Everything feels like an absolute mess in Universal’s Monster Universe, at least at this point. From the false start of Dracula Untold, to the delayed Mummy film, to the strange direction initially set forth by Kurtzman, hope is fleeting now, and fading fast.

Review: ‘Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers’ Episode Eight

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers is airing on Crunchyroll and updates Saturdays at 3:30pm EST.

Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers Episode Eight: Adelet at Knifepoint

Hans is poised and ready to kill Adelet, but instead of just going for it, he tries to get Adelet to admit the reason he is the seventh brave. Adelet insists that he isn’t the seventh, and uses a smoke bomb to escape. Fast-paced action ensues as Adelet tries to figure out how he can defeat Hans, who is a genius at combat.

Braves of the Six Flowers Episode Eight: Adelet's Trick SwordEventually, Adelet throws down all his weapons except for his sword, knowing Hans would be analyzing everything and looking everywhere…except at his sword, because he is a genius and doesn’t need to look at the sword. It turns out that the sword is Adelet’s trump card, and Adelet launches it from its hilt and knocks the weapon from Hans’s hand.

Braves of the Six Flowers Episode Eight: Hans and Adelet FightingAfter some discussion, Hans accepts Adelet as the seventh…then announces HE is the seventh! I was about to be really disappointed in this series, but it turns out Hans just wanted to make Adelet hallucinate his own death because a dying face doesn’t lie. Adelet’s expression was of a man who lost everything in that moment, and so Hans declares him a true Brave and becomes his ally. Thank goodness. I really don’t suspect Hans at all at this point.

Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers Episode Eight: Flamie and Maura

Flamie and Maura make it to Adelet’s campsite and of course he isn’t there. Flamie continues to lie to protect him. Maura mentions hearing about a village taken by fiends, confirming some of Adelet’s story although she doesn’t know it. Flamie tells her that it wasn’t her personal responsibility, which causes Maura to warm up to her. It seems as though Maura is trying to win Flamie over before telling her to kill Adelet on sight. Considering she was the voice of reason before, I can’t help but wonder why she’s suddenly so keen on killing him.

Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers Episode Eight: Nachetanya and Goldov
Even Goldov thinks she’s acting weird.

Nachetanya tries to find proof that Hans is the seventh Brave, but of course is unable to do so because we all know he’s not the seventh Brave. Goldov is hurt that Nachetanya won’t believe him over Adelet. Nachetanya puts him in his place by essentially calling him a lovesick child who is currently putting his feelings before his duties. I wonder now, if Nachetanya isn’t the seventh Brave, if she actually suspects Goldov and not Hans. Either way, she’s probably just trying to keep him away from the temple.

Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers Episode Eight: Hans and Adelet

Hans and Adelet have arrived back at the temple and are trying to investigate who the eighth Brave is and how they entered the temple. Adelet suggests it must be a Saint with some heretofore unknown powers. He is distracted in the middle of dusting for fingerprints (at least, that is what it looks like) by a noise outside and thinks someone is coming. Hans reassures him. We never get the results of the fingerprint test because Hans asks how the barrier is activated, as he was never told. This makes Adelet realize he has to ask Chamo something, as she is the only other person who didn’t get the information about the barrier. I’m wondering if she gave away somehow that she knew in a previous episode.

Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers Episode Eight: Chamo's Vomit Swamp

Adelet wanted Hans to go ask Chamo the question, but they are lured out of the temple by Chamo herself. She doesn’t give a crap if either of them are the seventh Brave or not. She’s just gonna kill everyone else (except Maura) because she thinks she can take care of the Demon God herself. She proceeds to barf up a swamp filled with fiends before Adelet can ask the important question he has. Congratulations, Chamo! You win the Grossest Brave Award!

Adelet and Hans are in way over their heads and find themselves surrounded pretty quickly, mostly because Chamo’s fiends are treated as if they are Saints by the temple. She tries to get Hans to kill Adelet, but Hans refuses, so the battle will continue next episode.

Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers Episode Eight: Chamo has Hans and Adelet Surrounded

Final Thoughts

Gee, wasn’t there a question earlier about how the fiend Adelet talked to got close enough to the temple? Seems awfully convenient that there would be fiends somehow getting through the temple’s protections when there is a Saint who can produce fiends immune to the temple. It seems plausible that Chamo could have been trying to lure someone into the temple to be the scapegoat, especially with the flower symbolism from last episode. As an aside, would someone please tell Chamo that frequent vomiting rots your teeth?

I still don’t trust Nachetanya. I don’t think she has any reason at all to suspect Hans. If she isn’t lying about being the seventh Brave, she’s lying about who she suspects, perhaps to test Goldov.

[Review] Charlotte ep. 8 – A Healing Song

Monkeys Fighting Robots

While this weeks episode of Charlotte may not be as emotionally dire as it was last week, it did portray very strong emotions and progressed the story in a very interesting way. And seeing that last week was so emotionally intense, an episode like this that will just make your heart melt is a good follow-up.

Quick Episode Run-through

Back at school, the student council is back together and everyone is going crazy over Yusa’s new single. The class is still in love with her than ever and Nao is turned off by this more than ever. Yu comments on how he thinks this crazy laid-back time will be good for him. And boy is he about to get more friendly laid back time when he’s roped into going to a ZHIEND concert with Nao.

And boy is it a coincidence when on his way from school Yu just happens to come across their lead vocalist, Sarah. And I guess Nao wasn’t kidding about her being blind. And with Yu being awkward and unable to say no to her whims of finding food, he becomes her escort on the search for okonomiyaki. After they get chummy, Yu decides to introduce her to Nao but Nao refuses not really caring to meet her. Then Yu decides to bring Sarah to see Kazuki hoping to trigger something.

When they get to the hospital Kazuki’s composing again and tearing up his pillows, Sarah starts singing and eventually calms him down. Yu quickly tries to ask him if he remembers anything and he’s able to repeat Naos name. The episode ends with Nao thanking Yu for what he did for her and her brother.

Thoughts

So now Yu is back at school and has come to terms with Ayumi’s death, more or less. Though he seems back to his normal self he still can’t get out of the habit of sometimes thinking that Ayumi is still waiting for him at home. And while he still remembers her fondly, it seems he’s trying to move on and hates that he can’t fully let go. I don’t know if any of his friends can see this, but Sarah surely can just by spending a couple of hours with him.

Even though she’s blind she has the typical heightened other senses, so she can tell what Yu is feeling by the way he talks and sighs. This relates back to Nao talking about how her music is so sad and lonely because she is blind. But oddly enough Sarah seems to be a very cheerful person. In fact she seems to have it all together when compared to these kids. I also like how she can take things seriously but not be so melodramatic about it. She acts like a well put together adult should, and because of that is able to help in the way she does.

Even when she talks about how she lost her eyesight, (in the most cryptic way possible) she makes it seem like she has learned and grown from the experience. And she also has a positive outlook when looking back on her rocky signing career. She doesn’t dwell on this things that happen. She decides to learn from them and move on. And while even though her explanation for losing her eyesight makes no sense, I loved it for the reason that it brought back the mysticism that was in the beginning of the show. I still firmly believe that these kids are getting these powers by some other force for a reason and with this hint at the supernatural, I think that is indeed the case. Also her english singing voice is beautiful. Even though some of the lyrics don’t fit when translated, the soft melody helps enhance the lyrics no matter what she’s actually singing.

But that can’t be said for Yusa’s new song. I guess its one of those barriers you run into because you speak english. Immediately when she started singing “I can’t do it! Not the side there you!” I was literally done with that song. No amount of good vocals or catchy instrumentals could save it. Like I’m sure that Japanese people think its okay but as an English speaker it just sounds like fucking shit. Which is sad because I think the japanese lyrics are a good indicator on how Yusa feels about Misa. And it can also be relatable to Yu’s situation now that Ayumi is gone. But I can’t get over that silly English chorus.

But thankfully this episode isn’t completely hanging onto its musical numbers, most of it is about showing really how Yu has changed. Even if at first he was being somewhat roped into it, he still goes out of his way to make sure Sarah has a good time. And he can feel comfortable around her and not try to act fake to get her to like him. This is a big improvement if you look where he was at during the start of the show.

Another example of Yu’s thoughtfulness is trying to get Nao to meet Sarah. I don’t think he does this to get grow in her good favor, like the old Yu would do. He does it because he knows she likes ZHIEND and that it would make her happy. Of course he ends up being wrong about that, but the fact and the motives behind his actions speak volumes about how he has changed as a character. And even after She doesn’t want to meet her, he still proposes that her brother should meet Sarah. This may be love growing and Yu just doesn’t know it, but he seems to be very invested in making Nao happy. And by the end of this episode I think Nao is starting to see that somewhat as well.

But even if Yu can’t see that his intentions may be because he’s in love with Nao and wants to see her happy. He does acknowledge that she is the one who changed him to be the kind of person he is. So maybe to him it isn’t love at all but a feeling of obligation to pay her back for all that she has done for him and helped him through. We need more thoughts from Nao directly to piece this together. Even though she has helped him, she still seems like an enigma whose feeling are hard to get a lock on. And we’ll probably get it the night of the ZHIEND concert.

Now this was surely a great episode and I feel that Charlotte continues to progress these characters in a natural way. But I would like to see more of the supernatural power plot come back into play. With all the build up of the scientists and the direness to help keep these kids with powers a secret, it seems like if it isn’t touched on in greater detail later it could ruin some parts the show has set up. And considering we only have five episodes left, the time to execute this plot is getting more and more tight.

Also, I’m all for the development for these characters and want to see them grow. But I think they need to incorporate their powers more into how it relates to their growth. And we need explanations and dissections on Jojiro and Yusa pronto. They’ve been back burner characters for too long and I’d really like if they contribute more to the show. It’s clear that something is going on with them and I don’t want their problems to be shoehorned in out of obligation. I want it to feel natural like it did with Nao’s back story and the Ayumi arc. I know I really shouldn’t be worrying, seeing how the show has handled everything so far, more or less perfectly. But it’s always in the back of my mind that it will fall flat on its face. Maybe this is my cynicism showing. But even with that I loved everything that happened in this episode and am eagerly awaiting everything to come. Even if it doesn’t turn out the way I want it to.

Watch: Bruce Campbell Is Now A Weather Man

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Bruce Campbell was in Chicago promoting Wizard World Chicago and the crew at Good Morning Chicago apparently have never interviewed a celebrity of the caliber of Campbell as the weather and traffic report fell apart as reporters tried to be funny.

Up next for Campbell, he portrays 1978 Ronald Reagan in FX’s second season of Fargo, and on Starz Ash vs. Evil Dead in October.

In July we talked with Patrick Wilson about Bruce Campbell’s performance in Fargo:

“Shooting it was one of the most fun times. When I read it I said, “You’ve got to be kidding me. That’s how I get to meet Ronald Reagan was pretty great” I’ll leave it at that. But Bruce, the guy is fantastic, to have him come play with us for a bit was pretty great. It was pretty special.”

Sixpoint Craft Ales “Bengali” Beer Review

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Sixpoint Craft Ales has seen it all, from Hurricane Sandy to cats getting pregnant. but in the meantime they have also engineered some incredible beers.

Sixpoint has four core beers and several seasonal. Since 2004, the brewery has made hundreds of different beers, I decided to pick up an IPA. “Bengali” is an IPA that hails from Red Hook, Brooklyn, and had garnered my interest due to the reputation of the brewery around the nation. After my interaction with this beer you can also count on seeing more reviews from this New York-based brewery.

Let’s crack these suckers open.

Taste

“Bengali” has a great flavor that isn’t too hoppy which allows for a less bitter flavor. The rich, subtleness of the flavor makes them a truly enjoyable craft beer. The can describes the crew at Sixpoint as mad scientists and once you take a sip of one of their blends it becomes pretty obvious that it isn’t hyperbole.

Body

It is certainly a darker than the name Pale Ale would have you believe  but the flavor is par for the course. A smooth taste that isn’t overly distinct where you can get tired of the beer.

Price

Six cans for about $12 was a solid deal and considering the 6.5% ABV (Alcohol By Volume) it is a great bargain and an awesome beer to have on hand for watching sports, movies or just hanging out with a friend.

Presentation

The can definitely pops off the shelf which caught my eye and I think that the graphic on the can is awesome. The logo is well organized and contains IBU (International Bitterness Unit) and SRM (Standard Reference Method), which is used for color classification. The other great, underrated part about the presentation is how slender the cans are. If you are going to a beach or in any scenario where space is crucial than Sixpoint is a great way to maximize your space.

Final Sip of Sixpoint Bengali

Sixpoint is definitely one of my go-to breweries from this point on. This is an affordable IPA that is put together by people who love doing what they do. A group of people who really honed their craft (pardon the pun) and have created something that should be celebrated. Or used to celebrate.
