Coming This Fall: Shomin Sample

Monkeys Fighting Robots

There’s a strange trend in anime recently. Light Novel adaptations have begun lengthening their titles to absurd amounts. With anime like Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon, which is not about picking up girls in dungeons, actually the main character get’s ‘picked up’, and Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist, which is not about a world where the concept of dirty jokes don’t exist, they do exist, but they’re also illegal. Adding to-and possibly surpassing-this trend is the upcoming Comedy, Ecchi, romance, harem, school, Light Novel adaptation called Ore ga Ojou-sama Gakkou ni “Shomin Sample” Toshite Gets-Sareta Ken, translated to, “Story in Which I Was Kidnapped by a Young Lady’s School to be a ‘Sample of the Common People'” and often shortened to “Shomin Sample.” Don’t worry, it gets stranger from here.

The Synopsis reads: “In a hidden school surrounded by mountains, young ladies of good families are taught everything a high class lady needs to know. They are also completely cut off from the outside world, keeping them sheltered and innocent. However, a problem has come up recently—more and more graduates are failing to cope with the modern world after graduation. To deal with this problem, they’ve decided to kidnap a male commoner student, and enroll him as a student. They hope that this will be a gentle way to introduce the girls to the outside world. Kagurazaka Kimito is chosen for this dubious honor, mostly because he seems utterly average. However, the school leaders also seem to have concluded he’s a homosexual with a muscle fetish. When Kimito hears that the alternative may be castration (to protect the girls’ purity), he eagerly plays along with this misconception. Now he’ll just have to survive the attention of many high class young ladies that are completely out of touch with the world!” (Source)

Animated by Silver Link  (Kokoro ConnectYurikuma Arashi), directed by Masato Jinbo (Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 2wei!Nozo x Kimi), and is adapted from a Light Novel by Takafumi Nanatsuki (Nothing).

After reading the synopsis and watching the trailer I have this strong sense of… familiarity, almost. I swear I’ve seen this before. I’ve seen these characters before, I’ve seen this setting before, I’ve seen this plot before, I’ve certainly seen these genres together.

But I haven’t read the source material, I haven’t read the Manga adaptation, I obviously haven’t seen the show, but writing this article felt like such a deja vu trip.

Oh boy! This image really instills confidence in the quality of this show!

Look, let’s get real for a moment. I have tried to stay optimistic about the shows that I’ve covered. I try to make things sound like they have the possibility of being a good show. This show, Shomin Sample, will not, and has no ambition to be, a good show. The name doesn’t suggest that, the synopsis doesn’t suggest that, the staff doesn’t suggest that. Every anime season needs an Ecchi Harem trash, looks like Shomin Sample is ours. But what really irks me about this show, is that not only will it be a trashy show, it’ll be a forgettable, generic, trashy show. This show, is more average than its main character, and that is not a compliment.

Ore ga Ojou-Sama Gakkou ni “Shomin Sample” Toshite Gets-Sareta Ken will begin airing October 7th, 2015, for the 2015 Fall season.

Stephen Amell Leaves Social Media Over #IStandWithAhmed Backlash

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The star of the CW’s Arrow Stephen Amell used social media to comment on the #IStandWithAhmed story and things got out of hand and now he’s taking at step away from his computer.

Ahmed Mohamed, a young student in Texas, was arrested by the Irving, Texas police department for bringing a clock to school. Google, Facebook, and even the President of the United State has come to Ahmed’s defense.

The Green Arrow choose to defend the people of Texas and that backfired in a big way.

I never looked to Amell as the voice of reason but his comments continued the dialogue that needs to had about racism in America. Twitter being shocked that a white Hollywood actor doesn’t understand what it’s like to be a Muslim teenage in Texas, that’s pretty naive on folks that are on Twitter as well. For Amell walking away from the conversation probably is the smartest move at this time, but hopefully he returns soon with more information and a great understanding of the issues at hand.

Didn't mean to offend anyone. Truthfully. Was simply suggesting that two wrongs don't make a right. I'll go away for a bit now. SA

New Persona 5 Trailer Launches with New Release Date

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Today at the Tokyo Game Show, Atlas, the game-developer behind the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series, debuted a new trailer for the eagerly awaited; Persona 5. The new trailer shows that Persona summoning will now be linked to the player’s Masks as opposed to the Evokers or Tarrot Cards of previous games. This arguably makes a lot of sense given the psychological theories the games take inspiration from (with the titular Persona being a facade used to conquer lifes challenges). The tone of the trailer overall is somewhat darker then the last main entry in the series; Persona 4 and hearkens back to the series roots. Despite this darker tone, the game-play, animation and music featured in the trailers appears to live up to the high standards of its predecessors. More story specific information is sure to emerge in the coming days and when an English version of the trailer premieres.

Unfortunately, the trailer also confirms what fans and game pundits have long suspected. Depsite numerous claims from Atlas that the game was on track to launch in late 2015, it appears that Persona 5 will now hit store shelves in Summer 2016. While originally set the release in 2014, the addition of a PS4 version pushed production on the title back. How long it will take for the title to reach English speaking audiences remains to be seen, until then this excellent trailer will have to suffice.

The Bastard Executioner – “Pilot part 1 & 2” Review

Monkeys Fighting Robots

SPOILER WARNING!!

EPISODE DESCRIPTION: Wilkin Brattle, a warrior knight for King Edward I, becomes a farmer, but he can’t shake his past in the premiere of this drama set in the Middle Ages.

A lot happens in this episode. Wilkin, his team, and the world they live in is laid out in detail. Wilkin is stripped of almost everything he loves and despite his efforts to try and not kill anymore, the pilot by him becoming the titular Executioner. Of course some of the events were telegraphed pretty highly. It was obvious that Petra was not going to make it out alive. She was the best thing in Wilkin’s life, the one connection that kept him from going on a murderous rampage, and said everything except, “I’m two days from retirement.” Though for a second there it did feel like she’d get to run away and Wilkin would question most of the season whether she was alive or not. No such luck though.

The show has the usual Kurt Sutter charm to it. A mixture of just the right amounts of emotional attachment and brutal violence to make someone really feel for the character’s pain. The fate of Petra and the villagers was pretty shocking but nothing out of the ordinary for a veteran Sons of Anarchy fan. The dispatchment of Baron Ventris was a bit of a surprise. It felt like he was going to be the final boss to end the season with but nope he met his end as well. The take away from this is don’t get attached to that many as the season keeps going. Their fate it not guaranteed.

By the look and feel of the episode, this show is going be a bit different from Sons of Anarchy. Other than the its set in medieval times instead of modern day, one of the most stand out differences is that death will not mean the characters will never appear again. No there isn’t a Lazarus pit or any other mythical object to revive the dead, but there are ample visions. These visions of people who have left the mortal plane will serve to torture Wilkin as he struggles with his new position of being an Executioner. This is evident by the fact that Petra visits him at the end of the show, all in white, and holding her and Wilkin’s baby.

There are a few problem that stood out in the pilot. With everyone talking softly and forcing Welsh accidents, it makes it very easy for a person to miss dialogue. Might be one of those shows with a requirement to leave the closed caption turned on to ensure the viewer doesn’t miss anything. It was easy to miss a character’s name and other story details but not so much that a viewer will lose focus on what’s taking place.

The show is off to a good start and is just the right amount of action to keep Game of Thrones fans entertained until the show’s next season. So sharpen your sword, dear readers. The season of the Executioner has begun.
