Tom Hiddleston Tweeted This Insanely Awesome ‘High-Rise’ Trailer

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Tom Hiddleston took to his Twitter page to show us the new trailer for High-Rise, the odd and polarizing new film from Ben Wheatley. The film, based on J.G. Ballard’s novel, is an oblique look at the residents of a peculiar high rise apartment building whose lives begin to spiral out of control.

Here is the trailer:

This looks wonderfully trippy. High-Rise doesn’t have a domestic release date yet, but last year on the festival circuit there were only two possible reactions to the film itself: love or hate. Along with Tom Hiddleston, the film stars Jeremy Irons, Luke Evans, Sienna Miller, and Mad Men‘s Elizabeth Moss.

Say no more, I’m sold.

Oscars 2016: Predicting Best Actor

Monkeys Fighting Robots

If you need more evidence that 2015 was the rise of the women in Hollywood – finally – look no further than the lead actor and actress categories. Lead actress this year is, as we said, loaded. Meanwhile, the typically overstuffed Best Actor nominee pool is relatively thin. Aside from a few locks, the Academy may stretch to fill out Best Actor this year with some smaller roles in smaller films; which, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

There were plenty of films with lead performances hopeful to get into this race but, alas, they didn’t deliver the goods (I’m looking at you, Johnny Depp). Here we go…

Best Actor

Leo Leo Leo DiCaprio… may just win a lifetime achievement Oscar for his role in The Revenant. I know he ate raw animal livers and slept in carcasses and the shoot was incredibly arduous, believe me I know guys. We all know. Stop talking about it, DiCaprio will get his nomination and likely his win. I hope he wins just so the DiCaprio memes will stop. But there are four other actors left to fill out this category. I expect Matt Damon to grab a spot here for his (practically) one-man show in The Martian. Damon embodies Andy Weir’s Mark Watney perfectly, and perhaps he could sneak in and steal Leo’s thunder.

Matt Damon  Michael Fassbender

Despite the abysmal box office of Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs picture, Michael Fassbender should grab a nomination playing the title role. Jobs is positioning itself to be the oft-nominated film to get shutout this year. That leaves two spots and, with such a thin field, only a few legitimate candidates left to fill these two.

Bryan Cranston gave it a shot with Trumbo, but I doubt his performance will be noticed as the film is mediocre at best. And yes, Johnny Depp went all in for a nomination once again, playing Whitey Bulger in Black Mass, but the end result was just more proof his time as a genuine performer has apparently passed. One of these final two slots may in fact belong to Michael Caine for his performance in Youth. Eddie Redmayne may have designs on this fifth spot in overrated Tom Hooper’s overrated drama The Danish Girl, but I feel a surprise on the way.

Youth  Michael B. Jordan

This surprise has as much to do with diversity as it does true justification. The Oscars have repeatedly been criticized for whitewashing the ceremony, no more so than last year. Which leads me to Michael B. Jordan, who will be the surprise nomination this year for his performance in Creed. Jordan is absolutely deserving, make no mistake, and I would prefer his nomination over any of the other hopefuls mentioned here.

PREDICTIONS

Leonardo DiCaprio – The Revenant

Matt Damon – The Martian

Michael Fassbender – Steve Jobs

Michael Caine – Youth

Michael B. Jordan – Creed

Up next week we predict Best Director and Best Picture ahead of the January 14th nominations.

New ‘Daredevil’ Season 2 Trailer Released by Netflix

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Season two of Marvel’s Netflix series Daredevil has been in the news this past week, as rumors circulated about its release date. This morning, Netflix not only announced the true release date, but put out a full minute-and-a-half long teaser trailer.

The trailer does not show any footage of season two, but is more of a brief recap of season one, done in a very stylized way. It echoes Catholicism, taking place in a cathedral with church music running. Matt Murdock’s religion is one of the things that make him such an interesting character; his mission is fueled by Catholic guilt. It looks like Marvel and Netflix intend to make that a running theme throughout the series.

Check out the full trailer below:

[embedyt] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXyW4Cuwphg[/embedyt]

What little audio the trailer does supply from the new season plays right into that notion of Catholic guilt:

“Father, why do I still feel guilty?”

“Guilt can be a good thing. It’s the soul’s call to action; the indication that your work is not yet finished.”

Fans won’t have to wait much longer to see if Matt can relieve himself of that guilt.

Season two of Marvel’s Daredevil will be available to stream globally on March 18 at 12:01 a.m. PT on Netflix.

Review- ‘Youth’ A Visually Luxurious And Lavish Tale About Aging

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Watching Youth is like bathing in nothing but lush, luscious visuals. Moment after moment, as we explore the idyllic health spa where nearly the whole film takes place, I wondered: Do places like this even exist? It seemed too perfect. It was as if this character were stuck in limbo, left to resolve their imperfect pasts before moving on to the next world.  In a movie filled with eccentric characters, the narrative path is definitely non-linear, the story is full of dazzling non-sequiturs, and the storyline is oddly cryptic. These characters are very much alive, some more than others.

Micheal Caine, a tremendous actor who for years and years has gone from one solid supporting role to another in Christopher Nolan films (The Dark Knight Films, Interstellar, Inception), gets a chance at playing the lead role once again, and he seizes the opportunity with understated magnificence. Caine plays Fred Ballinger, a retired composer of great renown on his annual retreat to this posh resort. By day, one can walk about the massive grounds, enjoy elegant dining experiences, have a relaxing massage, and enjoy hot-pool soaks during which a nude Miss Universe just might join the festivities. At night, there are all sorts of onstage entertainments, but the real enjoyment comes from the people watching. Fred’s fellow guests include his lifelong friend Mick Boyle (Harvey Keitel), a director working on a script with a team of let’s just say, eccentric writers; a famous American movie star named Jimmy Tree (Paul Dano); the pop star Paloma Faith (played by the pop star Paloma Faith); an odd-looking teenage masseuse with braces (Luna Zimic Mijovic); rounding out the guests is the morbidly obese Diego Maradona (Roly Serrano).

Fred is trying to get away from it all, but it seems the world manages to keep coming to him. The queen has sent her emissary (Alex Macqueen) to desperately plea for Fred to do a command performance of his legendary “Simple Songs” composition, but Fred refuses because he doesn’t want to share them with anyone. Fred’s daughter Lena ( Rachel Weisz), full of resentment because Fred was a terrible father, is heartbroken when her husband leaves her with no warning. What complicates matters is that Lena’s husband is the son of Fred’s old pal, Mick. For guys trying to get away from it all, they seem to be doing a terrible job.

Youth is filled with odd little subplots and surprises. We quickly learn that Miss Universe (Madalina Diana Ghenea) is more than a vapid beauty contest winner. When we find out the role that actor Jimmy Tree has been prepping for, it comes off as quite a shock. Jane Fonda shows up late in the film as a Hollywood Starlet and is a force to be reckoned with as she seems to be well past polite conversation. At one point Mick has a vision where he sees the actress that he claims to have discovered, in her element delivering wonderful lines. At first, it’s a beautiful delusion that quickly morphs into something odd and extremely chilling.

Paolo Sorrentino is an extremely talented director with a grand vision. It’s easy to forget but this is the same director who gave us The Great Beauty which won the Academy Award for best foreign language film. His cinematographer Luca Bigazzi manages to take what on the surface looks like a pedestrian shot and turn into something special. Whether it’s a simple scene in the hotel, a dream sequence involving Fred and Miss Universe, or an overweight soccer legend huffing and puffing on the tennis court as he kicks tennis balls into the clouds, the visual artistry will keep the audiences engaged throughout the film.

What audiences will take most from Youth is the sensational performance of Micheal Caine. Caine’s work conveys such a deep sense of vulnerability that we bear witness to the pain manifesting in his eyes. His is the emotional backbone of this film. It certainly one of the best performances we have seen from Micheal Caine in recent years, and the type of performance that will likely draw the attention of award voters.

REVIEW: Steven Universe ‘It could’ve been great.’ – Don’t worry. It is.

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Summary: The gems must find the Cluster’s exact location, and travel to an information archive on the moon to look for it.

SPOILER ALERT

Time for more bonding between Peridot and the rest of the main cast. It starts with her and Steven having a jam session leading into a montage of her working with the Crystal Gem to finish the drill. From there they need the coordinates for where the Cluster (the giant world ending mutant they have been trying to stop) is growing.

This results in a road trip to the moon courtesy of Lion. It’s impressive to see the big guy basically perform warp drive. There they learn more about the Great Diamond Authority, the leaders who have been mentioned throughout the entire series. By the feel of where the series is going one of these higher ups will be making an appearance in the near future.

As the team gets the information about the cluster, Peridot takes the time to show them what the world would have looked like if they had finished the colonization. She insists it would have been better if the Earth had been taken over and Rose Quartz efforts were for nothing. Obviously, this doesn’t sit well with the rest of the Gems and they are once again angry at Peridot. There is a pretty good chance they won’t be able to make up anytime soon.

Peridot’s first adventure with the Crystal Gems starts out pretty fun and entertaining but moves downhill as she just can’t seem to get over the allure of the Gem homeworld. It also appears as if she plans to double cross her new friends. This feels like a prologue to some very bad things going down with the characters. This is another classic episode and seems to be the start of an epic storyline.

The Shannara Chronicles – Feminism, Demons, and LOTR

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The Shannara Chronicles is MTV’s competition, well actually, MTV’s answer to HBO’s Game of Thrones. Well, no it’s not. A big budget network fantasy series based on a series of novels, and the first thing audiences and critics think is Game of Thrones. The Shannara Chronicles and Game of Thrones don’t even compare. The former is a ‘good versus evil’ story, and the latter is middles ages politics with bastard children and dragons.

MTV’s two-hour premiere sets up the backstory three leads. Amberle, an Elven princess, becomes the first woman to pass the physical test to become one of The Chosen. Wil is a recently orphaned, half-elf looking a better future. Eretria is a Rover, or thief, trying to survive and gain her autonomy. The story starts with Amberle, as she has visions of her home in ruins and demons spilling blood. The Shannara Chronicles is a bit more violent than one would expect from MTV, but those used to watching Jessica Jones won’t think much of it. Amberle’s demon visions come as a warning to the dying Ellcrys, a magical tree keeping the Four Lands safe.

With the mythology, magic, elves, dwarfs, and nature-oriented setting The Shannara Chronicles speaks much more to Lord of the Rings fans. The demons also feel incredibly reminiscent to Peter Jackson’s orcs. This show doesn’t have the feel of the dense writing of either J.R.R. Tolkien or George R.R. Martin. The Shannara Chronicles clearly wants to appeal to a younger, possibly less educated, audience. Clear indications of this target demographic appear in the cute gossip of Amberle’s love interest, the use of Coldplay’s Midnight, and use of modern phrases like, “fried brain.”

Whether this was MTV’s intention or not, The Shannara Chronicles is gold in reaching to feminist viewers. For one this series passes the Bechdel Test, as Amberle and Eretria don’t talk about a man. Both of these female leads have their own storyline, and exhibit character traits typically given to their male counterparts. Think narratively active, physically strong, and warrior survival skills. If anything the male characters work to further the women’s storyline. With the Druid Allanon, the guy who instigates the hero’s quest, his character is written to avoid toxic masculinity. Along with his stoic warrior demeanor Allanon’s emotional, honest, sensitive, and patient. These character traits would be considered weak in a typical male character, and makes Allanon a complex versus stereotypical character.

The Shannara Chronicles stars Austin Butler, Poppy Drayton, Ivana Baquero, and Manu Bennett. The series is based on The Sword of Shannara Trilogy written by Terry Brooks, and executively produced by Jon Favreau. The series is set to premiere 10 episodes.

New Belgium To Offer ‘Citradelic Tangerine IPA’ Year-Round

Monkeys Fighting Robots

New Belgium Brewing announced Monday the brewery would produce Citradelic Tangerine IPA year-round.

Citradelic Tangerine IPA is a blend of Citra hops, Tangerine-touched Mandarina Bavaria, tropical Azacca, and fruity Galaxy hops complement Citra, balanced with a touch of malty sweetness.

“This hop profile really lends itself to that big citrusy, juicy fruit nose, so the next logical step was to riff off of that with actual Tangerine,” said Assistant Brewmaster Grady Hull. “The result is a brightly citrus, slightly bitter, and pleasantly balanced IPA.”

Citradelic Tangerine IPA comes in at 6 percent ABV and 50 IBUs. It retails for a suggested price between $8.99 and $10.99 a six-pack.

Seasonal Release: Side Trip Belgian Style Pale Ale
New Belgium also announced their Side Trip Belgian Style Pale Ale hits shelves this January as well.

The pale ale includes Belgian Chateau Abbey, and Cara Ruby malts with Belgian Magnum, Saphir, and Target hops, providing a bready, caramel-sweet wash with traces of stone fruit and a dry finish. It has 22 IBUs and registers at 6 percent ABV. Side Trip Belgian Style Pale Ale retails for a suggested price between $8.99 and $10.99 a six-pack.

New Belgium will debut two beer from their Glütiny series, a line of gluten-reduced beers. For both Glütiny Golden Ale and Glütiny Pale Ale, New Belgium brewers used an enzyme to break down the gluten proteins. Glütiny Golden Ale, at 5.2 percent ABV and 20 IBUs, is a sessionable, flavorful ale that starts sweet and ends crisp. Glütiny Pale Ale, at 6 percent ABV and 30 IBUs, has a light sweetness that slides into a balanced bitterness. Glütiny beers retail for a suggested price of $9.99 a six-pack.
