San Diego Comic-Con Shows Us What To Expect From ‘Wonder Woman’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman Is Coming To Kick World War 1 Ass!

Entertainment Weekly provided fans with some tidbits from Comic-Con about the upcoming ‘Wonder Woman‘ film. There were photos showcasing the Themysciran princess with her love interest Steve Trevor and actress Gal Gadot working with director Patty Jenkins. We also got an official plot synopsis.

Wonder Woman

“Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.”

Wonder WomanThe film is being described as an origin story for the character but also an action-adventure saga and a love story. It seems like the director Patty Jenkins (‘Monster‘) is out to make an epic big-screen introduction for Wonder Woman. Jenkins gushed to Entertainment Weekly saying Gadot’s performance and said ‘Wonder Woman‘ is “the movie I’ve wanted to make my entire life.”

Movie-goers were introduced to the character in 2016’s ‘Batman v Superman’ as a mysterious beauty who can kick-ass. That allure will be expanded on throughout the film while finally introducing audiences to the women of Themyscira. ‘Wonder Woman‘ begins on the island ruled by women and follows the titular character as she leaves her home for the first time to save the world. She finds herself in Europe at the end of World War 1 and faces a much bigger threat than expected. A female-led superhero film has never been done to this magnitude before.

Will a trailer for the film debut at San Diego Comic-Con? CW already gave us a sneak-peek but Comic-Con would be the time to tease what’s to come.

Wonder Woman‘ stars Gal Gadot (‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘), Chris Pine (‘Star Trek‘), Connie Nielsen (‘Nymphomaniac: Vol. I‘), Robin Wright (‘House of Cards‘), and Danny Huston (‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine‘)

Review: ‘Ghostbusters’ Overcomes Minor Flaws With A Fantastic Cast

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Title: Ghostbusters
Director: Paul Feig
Summary: Following a ghost invasion of Manhattan, paranormal enthusiasts Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann, and subway worker Patty Tolan band together to stop the otherworldly threat.

I’ve spent the better part of the last week trying to come up with a more hated reboot of a movie and I haven’t been able to come up with one. As someone who enjoyed the original Ghostbusters and thought the sequel was a huge let down, I didn’t understand the hate behind this movie. As I said in a previous editorial, I believe that the yelling at each other over social media isn’t helping anyone, and the review bombing that happened on IMDB before the movie even came out was irritating. The original Ghostbusters has not gone away and this one deserves a chance to be judged based on whether or not it’s a good movie, not whether you think pop culture vandalism has occurred.

Ghostbusters is not a perfect movie, but thanks to a great cast and some amazing jokes the flaws are minor and easily overlooked.

ghostbusters - ghosts

One of the things that I love about some movies is a good team dynamic. I can look over a lot of flaws if there is a good back and forth between the various characters. Ghostbusters is a movie that thrives on good character dynamic. The four various characters, Abby (Melissa McCarney), Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon), Patty (Leslie Jones) and Erin (Kristen Wiig) all bounce off of each other very well. The history between Abby and Erin feels very real, but the instant connection that Patty develops between the rest of the girls also feels genuine. There was concern that Patty would come across as a little racist since she is the only non scientist of the group, but the character becomes the historian of the group and even saves the day in the end.

I’ve decided that Director Paul Feig is someone whose movies do not come across well in the trailers. I cannot think of a single movie of his that has had good trailers. This is something that they need to figure out in the future because the bad marketing has not helped this movie at all. If I didn’t know anything about the director or his previous works I would not be excited for this movie based on the trailers alone. The jokes are more situational and character based which don’t work well in two second sound bytes, but in the movie proper they are great. They don’t all work, and there are a few moments where a joke or two doesn’t land, but I laughed more than I didn’t. Holtzmann was the one that made me laugh the most and her antics were a highlight of the movie for me. Kevin (Chris Hemsworth) is being picked apart by some for being a one note idiot pretty boy, apparently missing that that is the joke.

As I said the movie is not perfect, and the thing that a lot of people have mentioned that doesn’t work is the climax and finale. The final villain, Rowan (Neil Casey), is not that threatening when all is said and done. The designs of the ghosts for the finale sometimes don’t look that great. There is also a strange sense that no one is really in much danger, despite the fact that the stakes are very high. There is a moment before the big finale that felt much more dangerous than anything that happened with the ghosts. I enjoyed the cameos from the cast members from the old movies but they don’t do much and I can see how some of them might irritate people.

Ghostbusters is a comedy worthy of your time and your money, if nothing else to see four amazing comedians bounce off of each other. There are a few things that don’t work but I was able to overlook all of them and walked away from the movie happy. The naysayers have hated this from day one but it’s worth your time to go and see it and form your own opinion.

Review: ‘Berserk’ Episode 3

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Night of Miracles

After escaping with Lady Farnese in tow, Guts makes his way to the estate of the late Count Landson. There he finds his target, one of the Apostles of the Godhand. It becomes very apparent what Guts’ mission is going to be. He will track down every Apostle he can find until they point him towards where Griffith is so he can take his revenge. Pretty good plan but it might involve Guts getting his butt kicked on a regular basis to accomplish it.

This episode really helps to show just how deranged and manipulative the demons in the world can be. If they don’t plan on eating a person for dinner, they intend to possess them and use them as a puppet to kill their friends. Given the atrocities they can commit its surprising their existence isn’t common knowledge. Of course, maybe there are more people in this world like Lady Farnese and they don’t want to believe in things going bump in the night which want to eat them for a late night snack.

This would be a good time to talk about the censorship in this episode. In the past characters have been used light or steam to cover the nudity of characters for broadcast reasons. In this case they choose to simple remove Lady Franese’s nipples entirely and will no doubt have them added for the physical media release. It just seems odd, there choice of willing to broadcast ultra violence complete with heads getting chopped off but the female nipple still can’t be shown for fear of some kind of complaint.

Despite the odd censorship choices this series is really starting to pick up and become one of the best animes of the summer. If you haven’t taken the time to check it out click the link below.

Puck Will Not Save Berserk

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Like most fans, I was excited for the new Berserk anime. Unlike most fans, however, I had chosen not to watch the original anime. The consensus of my friends is that the original is an amazing, quality adaptation, but it’s exclusion of the character Puck discouraged me from watching. The original anime focused on story arcs that didn’t need Puck. But in the manga Puck is one of the most important characters. Puck is among other things, is comic relief and made the overwhelmingly dark storyline readable to me, also I like Puck.

Berserk 2016

The new Berserk includes Puck, so I decided to watch it. The first three episodes are impressively faithful with his character. Unfortunately Puck is really the only thing that’s done right. The timing is horrible. I agree that they didn’t need to cover Golden Age again. It’s familiar to all fans. This adaptation not only doesn’t cover Golden Age, but it trimmed the The Black Swordsman Arc into one jumpy 25-minute episode. There’s precedent for having an episode to introduce the characters and plot, but in Berserk that‘s not doable. For example Guts doesn’t talk an introductory monologue for him wouldn’t work.

Most anime convert a manga plot arc into three or four episodes. To make the new Berserk flow smoothly the writers could easily have had Guts meet Puck on his way to fight the unnamed count who serves as the main antagonist of the Black Swordsman Arc. That storyline would have allowed three-four episodes to introduce the characters and give an entertaining bloody beginning to a 12 or 24 episode anime. Instead the creative team skipped straight into the Conviction Arc, which, as I feared, doesn’t sense on its own without preparation or adequate flashbacks.

So far, I am extremely disappointed with the way the new Berserk anime is going. The creative team seems to be speeding up the story to quickly get to parts of the manga were never animated. Sadly they are failing, because it can’t be done. Puck’s inclusion, while important, has not made the anime watchable.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ Concept Art Reveals Mantis

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is going to have a presence at San Diego Comic Con but James Gunn has released some concept art before the convention has started. The new artwork, released to Entertainment Weekly by artist Andy Park, shows the entire team including our first look at Mantis played by actress Pom Klementieff. “She has never really experienced social interaction,” says executive producer Jonathan Schwartz. “Everything she learns about dealing with people, she learns from the Guardians of the Galaxy, which is a very weird group to learn your social intricacies from.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Schwartz also teased a different Groot from the one we saw in the first movie. “He doesn’t have the wisdom and experience of that Groot,” Schwartz says. “He’s a younger Groot and a more rambunctious Groot. The question is, is he the same Groot, just smaller? Or is he a different Groot that’s sprung up from the seed of the first Groot?”

What do you think of this concept art and are you looking forward to more reveals from Marvel’s Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic Con? Let us know in the comments

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is directed by James Gunn and comes out Mary 5, 2017.

Top 5 Moments From ‘Nightwing: Rebirth’ #1

Monkeys Fighting Robots

SPOILER ALERT

With the Rebirth movement in full swing, Dick Grayson has decided has to stop being a secret agent, and instead has decided to go back to being Nightwing. This issue was pretty good and had a lot of great moments in it. Here are the top five moments from Nightwing: Rebirth #1.

Nightwing5

5. A Day at the Arcade

Seeing heroes interact with each other out of their costumes is always entertaining. This is especially true with members of the Batman family. Dick takes some time to hang out with Damian, and the two of them have a little adventure to an arcade. It’s like watching an uncle hang out with his younger nephew and still try to act cool and give advice. It’s a cute moment.

Nightwing4

4. Huntress Suits Up

Given Dick would be returning to his secret identity, it was obvious that he would put on the costume at some time in the issue. Still, the idea of Helena Bertrinelli returning to be the Huntress wasn’t as expected. It looks like the former head of Spyral wants to take matters into her own hands and believes the only way to get things done is to become the Huntress once more.

Nightwing03

3. Saying Goodbyes

Parting can be such such sweet sorrow, but Dick finds a way to get through it. He takes the time to say goodbye to Helena, Tiger King, and Midnighter. Each goodbye really reflects how much he is obviously going to miss working with these guys but he knows he has no choice but to move on.

Nightwing2

2. Nightwing Again

Back in black and blue where he belongs. After a heartfelt moment with Batman where he makes sure this is what his former ward wants, Grayson once again dons the costume and becomes Nightwing. You knew it was coming, but you probably thought it would be number one. It was good, but there was still one more scene which beat it to the top slot.

Nightwing

1. March of the Parliament of Owls

Showcasing what will no doubt be one of the biggest obstacles that Nightwing will have to come across in his new series, the Court of Owls decides it’s time for a makeover. After casting off their white masks, they don black masks which will help to hide them better in the shadows, and become the Parliament of Owls, a group whose aspirations stretch far beyond what the previous organization could have envisioned. Afterward, they also decide to give have a few words with their leader, Lincoln March, on where his future will be in the organization. It’s a great build up for things to come and makes it apparent Nightwing has a lot to deal with in the coming months.

Episode 83: Paul Feig’s ‘Ghostbusters’ vs. Nerd Rage

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Paul Feig’s ‘Ghostbusters’ is finally here, was all the anti-women, anti-reboot nerd rage worth it? The film is trending on Rotten Tomatoes at a 75% and a four out ten stars on IMDB. Are the fanboys or the critics correct in their reviews?

Feig even sounds tired of the chaos at this point.

“It’s been quite a ride, gang. Supporters, you rock. Haters, I’ve heard you all. Now let’s all just have fun. We need it,” said Feig.

There is so much to debate, Matt and EJ dissect ‘Ghostbusters’ from all angles.

Review: ‘Hal Jordan and The Green Lantern Corps Rebirth’ #1: Shining Emerald

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Superstar artist Ethan Van Sciver returns to the world of Green Lantern! In the absence of the Green Lantern Corps, Sinestro and his fear-inducing Yellow Lantern Corps patrol the universe as its sole protectors—but deep in space, a green light still burns. Harnessing the remainder of his will, Hal Jordan must become a one-man GL Corps to defeat his greatest foe and restore freedom to the cosmos.

SPOILER ALERT

Writing

The purpose of the different Rebirth issues is to get a basic set up of what fans will be able to expect later in the series. Well mission accomplished. This one is a perfect example of how to set people up to be eagerly anticipating the future issues of the new series.

This one perfectly points out what the plot of the new series is going to be about. It goes back to the basics of Green Lantern, and shows the series is going to focus on the battle between Sinestro and Hal. Sinestro is using Parallax to power War World and is sitting pretty at his new kingdom. Hal has a hard road ahead of ahead of him and he knows he’s going to have to discard the whole fake bad guy persona to save the day. Robert Venditti has set up a great idea, and makes you want to know where he is taking the characters.

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps

Artwork

The artwork Ethan Van Sciver created in this issue is insane. The detail work of the characters shows the differences between where Hal and Sinestro are as characters and what they have going for them. The scene with Hal is trying to create a new ring at the forge is simple gorgeous to behold.

Conclusion

It’s been hard to follow up Geoff John’s epic run of Green Lantern, but Venditti and Van Sciver seem to have a good plan for making an attempt to make a great Green Lantern story fans will enjoy. Hal is going to have to form a team which will be able to fight Sinestro who is control of a planet. As long as the level of quality is kept at this level, the team will definitely have success in the future.
