Top 5 Moments From ‘All-Star Batman’ #1

Monkeys Fighting Robots

*SPOILERS AHEAD FOR ALL-STAR BATMAN #1*

Although he handed the Batman reigns to Tom King, Scott Snyder still has Dark Knight stories left to tell. He’s teamed up with comics rockstar John Romita Jr. to start All-Star Batman and explore villains that he didn’t get around to in his previous run.

Issue one is out this week, and it’s everything that fans hoped it would be, further cementing Snyder’s place among the greatest Bat-scribes in Bat-history. The whole book is outstanding, but let’s do the impossible and try to break down the five best moments.

Batman Swats Some Bugs

All-Star Batman

The series opens up with a bang as Firefly and Killer Moth (“Hired Gun” and “Other Hired Gun,” respectively) have the Caped Crusader on the ropes. Except they really don’t, obviously, because he’s Batman. Bats uses his patented quick thinking to lay the smackdown on this pair of non-threats, both physically and verbally.

This scene sets the tone for the series, showing that Snyder intends to thrill the reader and have some fun along the way.

Two Faced Philosophy

All-Star Batman Two Face

There’s a lot of great action packed into this issue, but it’s matched by sharp, dramatic dialogue scenes. Case in point, Snyder writes in a conversation between the World’s Greatest Detective and Two Face where our hero expresses his belief in people’s good nature. Harvey counters, claiming that people “all have a side of their face they hide.”

What follows is a poignant and disturbing monologue that dissects the true nature of man, and adds yet another layer to the rogue’s twisted psychology.

“I’m Good”

All-Star Batman

Batman makes quick work of Firefly and Killer Moth, but barely gets to catch his breath before Black Spider joins the fray. He chucks Batsy through the side of a building and unloads a fury of ammunition into what he thinks is the hero’s body. Only after realizing his error does Spider look up to see the scariest thing a person can see – Batman holding a running chainsaw.

This moment is actually a twofer, because it leads directly into the Dark Knight scaring off Firefly with merely a look.

Alfred’s Apology

All-Star Batman

E tu, Alfred?

This first issue ends with the revelation that Alfred – Batman’s #1 confidant – shot down the Batplane earlier in the story, stranding Bruce and Harvey in the middle of nowhere. This cliffhanger raises so many questions, starting with “what the *$@!?” Was it of his own volition? I don’t know, and I can’t wait to find out, but the tears on Mr. Pennyworth’s face are heartbreaking regardless. If you say you had to do it Al, I believe you.

“Why You?”

All-Star Batman Declan Shalvey Jordie Bellaire

Declan Shalvey (pencils) and Jordie Bellaire (colors) make one of today’s best art teams. Their visuals alone make the backup story in All-Star Batman worth checking out, and the script by Snyder puts it over the top.

It has nothing to do with the main story, revolving instead around Bruce training Duke Thomas. It’s brief, but in just eight short pages it pulls in the audience and leaves them wanting more. From the looks of it, we’ll be getting a much different look into the psychology of being Batman’s protégé that we’ve ever gotten before.

All-Star Batman issue one is in comic shops today.

Top 5 Moments From ‘Deathstroke: Rebirth’ #1

Monkeys Fighting Robots

*SPOILER ALERT*

DC’s number one mercenary is back. His mission is still being explained, but one thing is clear: he’s looking for answers and he’s willing to kill anyone to find them. Deathstroke: Rebirth, the prelude to his new series, takes a look into how everything ties together on with his mission for the truth and these are the top five moments to come out of the issue.

Deathstroke

5. Business Negotiations

The old saying goes, “You are the company you keep.” Here, Deathstroke takes the time to work out business details with his client, a man who is disposing of a mountain of bodies. Seeing them talk so nonchalantly about business while a mass grave is being filled nearby is disconcerting to say the least, and shows the kind of individuals Slade deals with on a regular basis.

Deathstroke 4

4. The Bear

When villains are shown interacting with their children, it usually serves as reminder to show they are still human. How their methods are a way to help make the world a better place for their kids. Instead, this issue shows Slade was a terrible dad and was hard as hell on his sons. After shooting a bear which tried to eat his son Grant, Slade proceeds to guilt trip the kid about not being strong enough. The Wilson’s aren’t exactly a hugging family.

Deathstroke

3. This is a contract

Seeing his companions are afraid of what might happen, Deathstroke makes them hand over all their money. He then calls it a contract and says they have hired him to protect their families. It’s one of those odd moments where a despicable character does something odd to show they still have something of a soul somewhere under all the kevlar they wear.

Deathstroke

2. The River

What do you do when you can’t kill someone? Just keep trying. The Clock King now resides seven seconds outside of time and thereby away from any of Deathstroke’s conventional weapons. This doesn’t sway Slade who proceeds to try and kill the old man with a mixture of different weapons, all while Clock King stays just outside his reach and mocks him. Its an interesting moment to say the least.

Deathstroke

1. Gifts

There’s hardcore and then there is getting so injured you are thought to be dead. This is how far Deathstroke is willing to go to get into an enemy camp and then uses his healing factor to rest up. Once he’s healed he takes everyone by surprise and makes his way through the camp and towards his target. This intense scene of action easily became the number one moment of the issue.

Miles Teller Is Down For A Fantastic Four Sequel

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Miles Teller is out promoting his latest film, War Dogs. In an interview with Eric Walkuski, Teller talked about his interest in reprising the role of Reed Richards in a Fantastic Four sequel.

“Yeah, for sure. I loved the cast, I loved the characters. I think it’s such an interesting dynamic. I love how much they really need to rely on each other. This Avengers thing, they’ve kind of created their own Fantastic Four in a way, Marvel’s first family. Their powers can’t just exist on their own; you need Thor to do this, the Hulk to do his thing. So yeah, absolutely, I would do another one,” said Teller.

It will be interesting how this plays out over time as FOX will need to make another film to retain the rights and Teller’s star is on the rise. ‘Bleed For This’ which comes out November 23, could be Teller’s ticket back to the Oscars.

What is you favorite Miles Teller film?

Patrick Stewart To Retire From The X-Men Franchise

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Hugh Jackman announced that the next Wolverine film will be his last and he will retire from the character. This may also be the end for Patrick Stewart as Professor X as well.

In an interview with ITV News, Stewart understands that this could be his last appearance.

“I would imagine this is probably the end of this franchise for me. But the thing about science fiction and fantasy is that you can never, ever say it’s the end, it’s over… [It’ll be] a very different Charles Xavier… nothing like the Charles Xavier you’ve seen in the past,” said Stewart.

The untitled Wolverine film is directed by James Mangold and stars Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, Richard E. Grant, Eriq La Salle, Elise Neal and Elizabeth Rodriguez.

The film is expect to hit theaters on March 3 2017.

Review: ‘Steven Universe’: Back To The Moon: Flies High

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Steven and the Gems return to the Moon Base.

SPOILER ALERT

After the last action packed episode, the story scales it back a bit to have some old friends return. Yes the Rubies have returned and thanks to Steven they all get named which helps to flush out their personalities a bit. Army is the angry one, Leggy is dim, Navy is shy, Eyeball is a stubborn soldier, and Doc, the is the captain and leader of the group. Unfortunately they are still as clueless as they ever were which is why Amethyst is able to fool them so easily by impersonating Jasper.

Amethyst using her shape shifting to try and fool the Rubies really helps to show how she is recovering. After getting defeated by Jasper, she didn’t really act like herself and instead preferred to just sulk around for the last few episodes. Here she is back in full force, impersonating someone and trying to play a prank. This is Amethyst as she is supposed to be.

There is also a major reveal this episode as it turns out Rose Quartz didn’t simply defeat Pink Diamond. Instead she shattered her, the Gem equivalent of murdering a person. This is a bit too much for Steven to handle as he always assumed his mother was someone who fought defensively only. None of the Crystal Gems make an attempt to try and correct them and Pearl even looks absolutely traumatized by the announcement as if she was there and the horrible memories were only now starting to come back to her.

Hopefully in the future more will be revealed and we’ll get a flashback to the fight. One where we see in detail what happened between Rose Quartz and Pink Diamond. For now though the season is winding down with a nice set of plot driven episodes which are simply astonishing.

New ‘Arrival’ Trailer Brings The Star Power: Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Director Denis Villeneuve has a chance to save a very bland year in films with his sci-fi drama ‘Arrival.’ Paramount Pictures released the first trailer Tuesday afternoon. Please say that Villeneuve was not a fan of Robert Zemeckis’ ‘Contact.’

When mysterious spacecrafts touch down across the globe, an elite team – lead by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) – is brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers – and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.

‘Arrival’ stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker. We might see aliens on November 11.

‘Sausage Party’ Review: Hilarious Mixture Of John Waters and Walt Disney

Monkeys Fighting Robots

A Raunchy R-Rated Cartoon With An Actual Plot? How Dare ‘Sausage Party’ Be This Good!

Parodying animated kid movies, ‘Sausage Party‘ is about a hotdog named Frank (Seth Rogen) trying to discover the meaning of his existence. Him and the other products at the Shopwell grocery store believe after the store’s doors is “The Great Beyond”. Little do they know their “Gods” are just humans trying to live their lives. Humans are unaware of the food’s human-like personalities so they freely go about eating and using the product as they would.Sausage Party

First of all, what the movie does best is not only make you laugh but provokes thought. I didn’t expect themes like blindly believing in religion or Israeli–Palestinian conflict to be used here. Not only did directors Greg Tierman and Conrad Vernon mix smart subjects in with raunchy humor, they did it REALLY well. This reminded me of a phrase the infamous filth director John Waters says: “To know bad taste, you have to know the rules of good taste”. I believe Tierman, Vernon, and the writers knew exactly how to shock & offend on the highest level they could.

Don’t get me wrong, this film is totally politically incorrect and quite offensive but that’s the best part. I personally feel like you couldn’t have made this project without pushing the boundaries to the max. There was moments that puzzled me on how they got things like orgies or decapitations passed the MPAA. Because the animated nature, all of this debauchery was overlooked by the strict rating system but digging deeper, this is dark. So dark that another critic turned to me after the film and said “I expected that to be a little more funny”.

“Legs, huh? Look at me! Look at me! I ain’t got no legs, you fuck! You ate my goddamn legs!”
A Slice Of Pizza

That’s not to say ‘Sausage Party‘ isn’t hysterical. Honestly, having Meatloaf cameo as Meatloaf is comedic gold. There’s so many great puns but Sammy Bagel Jr. has to be stand out to me. Even the villain of the movie is literally a douche. But under all the fun was this message about challenging what you are told to believe. This social commentary has been slowly growing within Seth Rogen projects and it shows here. While he may rely on stereotypes for some of the characters, you know like gays being fruits, it all felt fun and not malicious. It shows you can be a little risky but not truly offend anyone.

Also, love the animation used here. Because an adult animated film like this hasn’t been done since maybe Rob Zombie’sHaunted World Of Super Beasto‘, this was nearly uncharted territory. Using a normal Dreamsworks style of animation really made it feel like you are watching a kid’s film. That is until scenes where characters shoot up bath salts or the food has a massive orgy. Escaping into the animation was part of making this project work. Thankfully, they created a world so subversive and detailed that it’s an easy feat to get lost in Shopwell.

This may come off as a minor spoiler to some but I found it genius that the only way for humans to see the food and products come to life is by doing drugs. Something like this is a great way of saying when you are high, you are more perceptive to abnormal things. And by abnormal I mean scenes where food die like in ‘Saving Private Ryan‘ and even a few musical numbers.

Final Thoughts:

Will this film offend many? Yeah, sure it will but I think the film is more intelligent than harmful. Sometimes stereotypes & cliches can be used to your advantage to mock the ones who use them. It successfully makes someone laugh at themselves without even knowing. At the core, it’s a silly movie about a hot dog and a bun falling in love and trying to figure out the world but the movie knows how to be serious when making you laugh. ‘Sausage Party‘ is like what ‘Family Guy‘ has been trying to do for 15 seasons but done in less than 90 minutes.

NSFW: ‘Bad Santa 2’ Red Band Trailer

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Broad Green Pictures released the first trailer for ‘Bad Santa 2’ Tuesday afternoon. This trailer is not safe for work. The first ‘Bad Santa’ was released in 2003 (We still had Bernie Mac back then).

Bad Santa 2

‘Bad Santa 2’ returns Billy Bob Thornton to the screen as America’s favorite anti-hero, Willie Soke. Fueled by cheap whiskey, greed and hatred, Willie teams up once again with his angry little sidekick, Marcus (Tony Cox), to knock off a Chicago charity on Christmas Eve. Along for the ride is ‘the kid’ – chubby and cheery Thurman Merman (Brett Kelly), a 250-pound ray of sunshine who brings out Willie’s sliver of humanity.

Bad Santa 2

Mommy issues arise when the pair are joined by Kathy Bates, as Willie’s horror story of a mother, Sunny Soke. A super butch super bitch, Sunny raises the bar for the gang’s ambitions, while somehow lowering the standards of criminal behavior. Willie is further burdened by lusting after the curvaceous and prim Diane, played by Christina Hendricks, the charity director with a heart of gold and libido of steel.

Mark Waters directs ‘Bad Santa 2’ from a screenplay by Johnny Rosenthal and Shauna Cross, based on characters by Glenn Ficarra & John Requa. The bar is lowered on November 23.

‘Arrow’ And ‘The Flash’: Stephen Amell Teases “Boots On The Ground,” Flashpoint Crossover Villain, And Caitlin Snow’s Mother Cast

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Arrow and The Flash are about to have their worlds turned upside down this fall, but as to how much the Flashpoint Paradox will affect Arrow, Supergirl, or Legends of Tomorrow is yet to be seen. According to Comicbook, Stephen Amell was in the mood to tease Arrow Season 5, The Flash Season 3, and Legends of Tomorrow Season 2 spoilers, but as usual it was quite cryptic. Arrow star Stephen Amell took to Twitter to tease “boots on the ground,” as he called it.

Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, White Canary, and The Atom are all represented in a vague set photo opportunity that seems to show that the massive DCTV crossover event, that has been teased prior, is already filming.

Arrow and The Flash fans have yet to find out whether the Season 3 Flashpoint Paradox synopsis will be a part of this massive crossover event or not. That would, however, wrap up this new venture in a nice little epic bow.

Though so little is known about the Flashpoint Paradox, and its effect on Arrow, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow, reports have surfaced that there will be a unifying big bad for the DCTV Universe. Arrow producer Greg Berlanti explained this much, Comicbook reports.

“I’m going to probably try to have one unifying threat, as opposed to different things on different ones, which is what the first year was.”

Who or what this unifying threat could be is unknown, so it is possible that Arrow and The Flash fans might have to wait until October to find out. Speaking of the Flashpoint Paradox, and its effect on The Flash characters, The Flash Season 3 will see the appearance of Caitlyn Snow’s mother.

The Flash And Arrow Crossover
Reports indicate that Susan Walters will be playing mama Snow, but so far, she will only be dropping by for one episode. The other DCTV Universe shows are unlikely to have her, but she could become a reoccurring character on The Flash. Walters is no stranger to the CW, as she has appeared in The Vampire Diaries and Star-Crossed.

Will the Flashpoint Paradox really stretch over the entire DCTV Universe? Will the CW’s crop of DC Comics characters really be coming together to face one massive enemy in a crossover event?

Leave your thoughts and theories below.
