2016: Top Ten Moments From Comic Book Movies & TV

Monkeys Fighting Robots

2016 has seen an incredible amount of comic book properties on the big and small screen. Although there have been some great overall shows, seasons, episodes and films, I’m choosing to look at my ten favorite moments or scenes from any given comic book property.

10. Zoom Unmasked (The Flash Season 2)

Image result for zoom unmasked

Us Flash fans were waiting so long for this reveal, which is part of the reason it’s on this list. A character well acquainted with the audience, known as a good guy, was just revealed to be the season’s big bad who had previously almost killed the hero? The pay off was well worth the wait.

9. End Credits Scene (Deadpool)

Image result for deadpool end credits

Although I wasn’t a huge fan of the movie itself, I greatly enjoyed this end credits scene. Giving fans a Ferris Bueller throwback while also fitting Deadpool’s character, it just worked.

8. The Quicksilver Scene (X-Men: Apocalypse)

Image result for xmen apocalypse quicksilver twinkie

This sequence is by far the best part of the mediocre X-Men: Apocalypse. It outdoes the famous Quicksilver scene from DOFP while not feeling rehashed. The trippy visuals paired with “Sweet Dreams” make for a killer 1-2 combo.

7. The Warehouse Fight (Batman v Superman)

Image result for batman v superman warehouse fight

I strongly dislike the film as a whole, but this sequence is amazing. It’s the Batman action we’ve all wanted to see on the big screen executed perfectly. The mobility of Affleck’s Caped Crusader when given his size gives an idea of how menacing the character appears to villains in the film.

6. Matt Visits Fisk in Prison (Daredevil Season 2)

Image result for matt visits fisk in prison

This interrogation sequence is just amazing. The script, performances and atmosphere highlight the key trait of Fisk: he’s always in control. Scenes like this elevate the show from good to great.

5. Ace Chemicals (Suicide Squad

Image result for suicide squad ace chemicals

Whether or not you liked the actual movie, the Ace Chemicals scene is done extremely well. Two great performances paired with an adequate script and an atmospheric song make this scene unforgettable.

4. “Queens” (Captain America: Civil War)

Image result for civil war queens

We’re well into Captain America: Civil War, but no sign of Spider-Man. Then, “Queens” pops up on the screen over Alt-J’s “Left Hand Free”. I knew what Queens meant, and so did you. This introduction to Tom Holland’s Spidey was done with substance and style.

3. “Don’t Call Me a Ni**a” (Luke Cage)

luke-cage

This scene really got to me. Now, I’m not a black man living in Harlem, but the meaning of this dialogue can be appreciated by anyone. The words delivered perfectly by Mike Colter, this is the moment that locked me into the show.

2. Matt and Frank’s Clash of Ideologies (Daredevil Season 2)

Image result for daredevil punisher rooftop

The dialogue exchange between the two characters in this sequence is incredible. Touching upon the morality of killing, which is an overarching theme of the season, Matt Murdock and Frank Castle have a clash of ideologies. This scene was taken right out of the comic book, too.

1. Airport Fight (Captain America: Civil War)

Image result for civil war airport fight

The airport fight scene from Captain America: Civil War is the greatest action scene of all time. It gives you every 1-1 matchup you could have asked for, but doesn’t stop there; 15 year old Spider-Man makes an Empire Strikes Back reference. If that isn’t the greatest thing ever, I don’t know what is.

Do you agree with my picks? Why or why not? Leave me your top ten moments from comic book movies and TV in the comments below!

‘Flash’ Midseason Finale: Jay Garrick Returns, Alchemy Awaits!

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Jay Garrick is back! ‘Flash’ recruits the help of Garrick for the biggest fight of the season.

Earlier this week, The CW blessed with a longer trailer of the midseason finale. We have learned that Alchemy is Julian Albert, the pretentious CSI that hates meta humans, and works with Barry Allen.

Barry knows this will be the fight of a lifetime, enlists the help of Jay Garrick from Earth 3. Garrick is a speedster, and not to mention a doppelganger of Barry’s recently deceased father.

If this fight goes badly, we know Barry will potentially spin out of control again, due to losing Garrick. Everyone is afraid of another “Flashpoint” issue, so tensions are high.

Ultimately, it is up to Team Flash becoming victorious against the villains, but with Caitlin battling Killer Frost, and Cisco holding grudges against Barry, can they pull together to make it?

The Flash Midseason 3 Finale The Present Jay Garrick

With all at risk, this could be the most anticipated finale for the show yet. The crossover special made all the CW superhero shows shine,  it certainly didn’t stop with ‘The Flash’. The official synopsis for ‘The Present” from my source:

BARRY SEEKS HELP FROM JAY GARRICK — With Alchemy and Savitar still looming threats, Barry (Grant Gustin) is unable to focus on the Christmas holiday, and especially his relationship with Iris (Candice Patton). Determined to stop Savitar, Barry goes to Earth-3 to get advice from Jay Garrick (guest star John Wesley Shipp). Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) wants to help Barry fight Savitar and reveals that he’s been training with H.R. (Tom Cavanagh), which doesn’t go over well with Barry. As Cisco (Carlos Valdes) faces his first Christmas without his brother Dante (guest star Nicholas Gonzalez), old wounds are reopened.

The midseason finale of ‘The Flash’ will air Tuesday, December 6th at 8/7c on the CW. New episodes will return in January.

‘Arrow’ 100th Episode Slays; Oliver Queen Shines Bright

Monkeys Fighting Robots

‘Arrow’ broke the milestone of 100 episodes this week. Best episode so far. Why? Oliver Queen.

crossover-synopses-picIn the ‘Invasion’ crossover, parts of Team Arrow, Team Flash, and The Legends, were abducted by the Dominators, put in pods and saw a completely different timeline. Much like Flashpoint, big life events we knew to be true for the characters were altered in this universe.

His whole life was turning upside down, and Oliver was the main target. Both his parents were alive, and he was marrying Laurel

The episode began the same way episode one of season four did, Ollie on a run, seeing images in his head, and coming home. Instead of  Felicity, he comes home to Laurel. To our surprise, to his parents huge mansion, only being Oliver Queen.

Diggle was ‘Green Arrow’, Felicity was his one and only helper. Odd, but Oliver had no idea about that life. Felicity was with Ray, Sara was not an assassin, Laurel was alive and marrying Oliver. None of it made sense.

Overwhelmed with guilt, things started to really clear up for Oliver. The last scene before they all go back to their reality, when Oliver sees the ghosts of his past, and sees his sacrifices before him.

ghosts-of-arrow-past-214980

Wonder why both Roy and Felicity are “ghosts” while both of them are very much alive? According to my source, “even though Felicity and Roy have survived to this point, Ollie still lost both of them.”

Tommy, Moira, Laurel, and Robert unfortunately all have a place of sacrifice for Ollie, or ‘Green Arrow’

Finally, This episode proved that ‘Arrow’ is still relevant, and one of the shows that we need to look out for. It is only getting better, and we will be along for the ride.

‘Arrow’ airs on Wednesdays at 8/7c on the CW, with the mid season finale airing on December 7th.

Epic First Trailer For ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2’ Released

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Marvel Studios has released the first official trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2. The trailer doesn’t give much away but reminds fans of the unique, strange, and crazy themes of the first movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2

The trailer offers a new look at fan favorite characters like Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Rocket Racoon (Bradley Cooper), Drax (Dave Bautista), and of course Baby Groot once again voiced by Vin Diesel. We also get an introduction to new characters Ego the Living Planet (Kurt Russell), not to mention some pretty neat looking visuals.

More than anything else this trailer promises a lot more fun. Director James Gunn seems to have captured the magic of the first film and thrown us into a new adventure of epic scale. One I can’t wait to see.

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

First Reactions To ‘Rogue One’ Footage Hit The Web

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Lucasfilm recently screened 28 minutes of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to critics, and the select few have released their thoughts on the footage they saw.

Steve Weintraub, Collider:

“Just saw 28 minutes of ROGUE ONE at Skywalker Ranch. Honestly looks fantastic. Massive scope. Multiple world’s. Huge action. F**k yes.”

Kevin Polowy, Yahoo Movies:

“Saw 28 minutes of . So far, so very good. Gritty as hell. K-2SO is hilarious. And the emotion is going to be strong with this one.”

Jim Vejvoda, IGN:

“I just watched 28 minutes of  and it’s so goooooooooood”

IMDb:

“We just saw 28 minutes of sneak peek footage of  at Skywalker Ranch! Fans will find plenty that is familiar and fresh.”

Dan Casey, Nerdist:

“Just watched 28 minutes of  at Skywalker Ranch. Violent, thrilling, explosive, and tense. Can’t wait to see the rest of the film!”

Fandango:

“Wow! We just saw 28 minutes of #RogueOne here at Skywalker Ranch & it blew us away. Terrific action; K-2SO is going to steal all the scenes!”

Erik Davis, Fandango:

“No opening crawl on  – starts with “A long time ago…” then slams us into space. Big emotional opening sequence. Loved the action.”

Well, the reactions seem positive to me. Although 28 minutes doesn’t indicate the quality of the overall film, it’s definitely a good sign.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16.

‘In Rotation’: My Top 9 Albums Of The Week That You Need To Hear

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In Rotation, a listicle for music lovers, and seekers of new and different things to listen to. So, if you’re looking for new music, something different, or maybe music to suit your mood this week, here is the place to get a diverse offering each week. This week, of course, is no exception to that rule.

In Rotation this week, one Gothic Punk band, one classical composer, a Shoegazing band, a creepy Indie Folk Rock band, Emotive Punk Rock, ’50s/’60s Rock instrumental, and two Post Punk/New Wave style bands. The article is a little late, so lets dive in, and go for spin.

1)

No-Motiv-Daylight-Breaking

Band: No Motiv
Album: Daylight Breaking

No Motiv’s second entry In Rotation is where the darkness of Winterlong EP  got its groove from. The rest is Emotive Punk, or in some parts, Indie Rock. Though it represents a lot of maturity, the sound has changed some, but that isn’t to say No Motiv has lost their edge.

So, if you’re a reluctant fan, check it out. If you’re not, check it out.

2)

Wolfgang-Amadeus-Mozart-Requiem
Band: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Album: Requiem

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart probably doesn’t tend to even be in the same part of your local record store, but it happens to be here In Rotation. As annoying as that is getting, it is what this is called. Classical music isn’t something that is too popular nowadays, then again, popular radio doesn’t have almost any of bands mentioned in this column thus far.

Requiem is Mozart’s final piece, and he died before he could finish his own funeral masque. You can kind of hear where the next writer picked up and complete the piece. For Gothic music lovers, classical music lovers, and dark music curios, give it a spin and turn it up.

3)

The-Bilinda-Butchers-Regret-Love-Guilt-Dreams-EP
Band: The Bilinda Butchers
Album: Regret, Love, Guilt, Dreams EP.

First of all, lets get one thing straight, Bilinda Butcher is not in this band. Rinse and repeat.

This writer managed to listen to 2 of their albums without knowing this. For one reason, her name is suspiciously in the title, and the band relies heavily on a My Bloody Valentine Shoegazing style.

Though, Regret, Love, Guilt, Dreams is certainly toned down and softer, as I imagine their volume knobs aren’t cranked up to a deafening town in real life. Though, it still warrants more than a few listens.

4)

The-Decemberists-Hazards-of-Love
Band: The Decemberists
Album: Hazards of Love

The Decemberists’ album Hazards of Love is proof that you can have a whole career, barely have an effect on some music fans, and then produce one of their favorite albums of all time. It starts off innocent enough, but murder, death, and ghosts are around the corner.

The album is a hodgepodge of grunge, metal, folk, Indie Rock, acoustic, Sludge Blues, an almost cabaret sound at times, and enough darkness to make Ozzie Osbourne blush. Check it out…if you dare.

5)

TSOL-Change-Today
Band: T.S.O.L.
Album: Change Today?

Gothic/Political Punk music act True Sounds Of Liberty, or T.S.O.L. for most of their career, then their singer Jack Grisham left. He eventually formed The Joykiller with T.S.O.L. guitarist Ron Emory, but they would later return to their original band after the new singer Joe Wood ruined the band with hair metal with the album Hit and Run.

However, with Change Today? and Revenge, he furthered the bands Gothic Punkness, and added a much raspier, but also melodic voice to the band.

Who knows what would have happened if the departure of Ron Emory and merging hair metal into their genre title didn’t end their run. Either way, Change Today? is an album that is worth your time, and there is no hair metal. This writer has checked. No worries.

6)

My-Bloody-Valentine-You-Made-Me-Realise-EP
Band: My Bloody Valentine
Album: You Made Me Realise EP.

My Bloody Valentine invented Shoegazing, a form of rock music that blends grunge, experimental rock, and an obsession with dissonant, blended guitars and vocals that all form one fuzzy, smooth ball of awesome sounds.

Unlike their hit Loveless, this album leans more on the punk and grunge side, and is an EP, but do not let that fool you. This album also has a lot to offer.
7)

The-Parkays-Various-songs
Band: The Parkays
Album: Various songs

Surf Rock/Late ’50s, Early ’60s Rock instrumental band has but a few tunes, and not one single full album to listen to. The most amount of information that exists suggests the members were a backing band to other more well know artists, but if you have a chance to hear Purple Tigers, Get It, Late Date, or Green Monkeys, you might be singing a different tune.
8)

The-Bravery- Stir the-Blood
Band: Interpol
Album: Our Love to Admire

Interpol is an unusual band, and they occasionally remind one of Joy Division, but what Our Love to Admire offers is fairly different then the progenitor of Post Punk and Dark Wave music.

Ironically, the album is strongest when it sticks to its present, and less on its past.

In any case, they’re all worth looking into, but this one happens to be In Rotation, give it a spin.
9)

The Bravery - Stir the-Blood
Band: The Bravery
Album: Stir the Blood

The Bravery adds a ninth, and final, album to In Rotation this week. The Bravery, not unlike the music on Our Love to Admire in particular, seem to be a much malign group of the New Wave revival and Post Punk revival of period of the early 2000s. Though a lot darker, and more atmospheric than prior records, there is a lot to love in this emotional charged New Wave and Post Punk revival album.

Don’t listen to the detractors, listen to The Bravery.

That’s all for week. So feel free to drop in next week, but for now, take some of these discs for a spin.
