U2’s Pop Album Turns 20: Good Ideas With Flawed Execution

Monkeys Fighting Robots

U2 Pop album

March 3 marks the 20th anniversary of U2’s ninth album Pop. Sadly, there is little celebrating of this milestone.

Over the years, this mark in the band’s catalogue is one of their most complex works to date. Due to delays in production, U2 had to rush to complete Pop at the last minute. This cut into their rehearsal time for the PopMart Tour, which they chose to book in advance of the album release.

Pop is thought to be a disco record, but this is not the case. Rather, U2 tries to satirize mass media, consumerism and religion. Instead of going full dance, the group retains their old sound and includes electronic influences and samples. In the 1990s, bands like the Chemical Brothers did a lot of experimenting with sounds.

“Discotheque” is a good start to the album. The Edge’s guitar work is prominent here, and he is fine form. If anything, this is one of U2’s gems that doesn’t get much notice. It remains the band’s last Top 10 single in the US.

Looking back, it is the video that hurt the song’s longevity on the charts. While self-depreciation is okay, U2 as the Village People comes off as surreal and not funny. For this reason, many fans still regard the approach as a misstep.

Both “Do You Feel Loved” and “Mofo” have elements of club music. Yet they feel all over the place in their eclectic style. The songs’ mixing sounds fuzzy as if they are rough drafts. This is true with “Mofo”, because it’s full of screeching sounds.

Adam Clayton’s bass work is stellar. He gets the chance to really shine, and his playing is prominent on Mofo. Larry Mullen’s drumming is solid. Sadly, his playing gets lost in many samples added to the songs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2U3rY3fZ5vU

“Staring At The Sun” is a lo-fi song, but it’s one of Bono’s best vocals to date. The song depicts the clash between faith and blind worship. Edge gives an alternative sound to the track, and it feels welcome here. If they put this song out first, it could have been a big hit. But I digress.

“Wake Up Dead Man” offers a grim view of a world gone wrong. Bono sings, “I’m alone in this world, and a fucked world it is too.” The mood is somber and somewhat melancholic, but it stays with you. Not the way one would expect to end an album.

Pop is an interesting piece of U2 canon, because of its diverse mix. While not an Achtung Baby, the record shows hints of a great album. They were still in their mid-30s and eager to try new things. Since 2000, they have gone back to basics, because they play with a more conventional sound. If the band did more mixing, it could have been among their best work.

In recent years, Pop has all but vanished from U2 concerts. After PopMart, the band would play bare bones versions of Pop songs. Since 2007, none of the album tracks have made a full return to the live shows. The lone exception is a brief “Discotheque” sample at a few 2011 shows.

Here’s hoping U2 can pull off another great album. They’ve done it before, so anything is still possible. Maybe they can dream it all up again.

All New LEGO for 2017: Toy Fair Exclusive Coverage

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Every year, the Toy Industry Association hosts Toy Fair International, where brands across the world come to show their 2017 lines, and this includes LEGO. As a member of the press, I was lucky enough to get a walk through of LEGO’s booth this year and in doing so can bring some of the new upcoming sets of interest right to your door.

The new Marvel lines coming out this year are pretty phenomenal. The new Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 set has some cool new pieces with it. Bright pink though they may be, LEGO fans will be excited to see the new rotating monster. Some of the Mighty Micros are already out and some are going to be out later this year. If you haven’t picked up the Ms. Marvel set, ok the Captain America set that comes with Ms. Marvel if we’re being particular, you’re missing out.

https://www.facebook.com/GeekMomBlog/videos/1374245699299646/

Although I wasn’t allowed to video or photograph the embargoed LEGOs, the LEGO rep informed me that some of the Star Wars sets coming out this fall will relate to Episode VIII, because of course. In addition, some of the sets we did get to see that won’t be coming out until later this year were looking mighty snazzy. For the records, this year’s Star Wars advent calendar comes complete with BB-8 wearing a Santa hat on a snowboard. Yes, go ahead, watch the video at 1:20.

This year’s Toy of the Year in the Action Figure category was Mattel’s DC Super Hero Girls. Not to be outdone, LEGO will be releasing a line of DC Super Hero Girls this year as well. The Super Hero High is fantastic. Whether you’re a kid or an adult, this is going to be one of the LEGO sets of the year. Note that the high school specifically has no stairs because all the girls fly. There are also individual sets for some of the girls at lower price points. If you want to fast forward straight to the DC Super Hero Girls, go to 3:32.

There’s a lot of LEGO to be excited for in 2017. If you want some additional non-superhero specific coverage, you can check out more from the LEGO booth here.

What comics based sets do you want to see LEGO bring in?

Hugh Jackman Will Be Michael Mann’s ‘Ferrari’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Hugh Jackman will hop on Michael Mann’s long-gestating Ferrari biopic, taking over the part of the famous car designer from Christian Bale.

And speaking of long-gestating… this movie won’t even begin filming until next summer, but hopefully Jackman will stick around and follow through with the project. Bale previously dropped out because of concerns about the weight gain; the dude has done it so often in his career another puff up can’t be good for his heart.

Anyway, here is a little backstory on Mann’s Ferrari:

Ferrari is the drama Mann started in partnership with the late director Sydney Pollack almost 17 years ago. The film takes place in 1957, a year where passion, failure, success and death and life all collided in Ferrari’s battle for supremacy against rival Maserati.

It’s an interesting project for Mann. It’s been a long time since 2013’s Blackhat, a sometimes clumsy, occasionally brilliant crime drama. Seeing him in biopic territory once again should be worth the price of admission.

Joining Hugh Jackman is Noomi Rapace, probably as one of his wives. No other casting news is announced as of yet, but we will let you know of any updates. But remember, we have plenty of time before this thing hits theaters.

In Defense Of The Weird, Over-Sexed, Over-Cooked ‘King Kong’ (1976)

Monkeys Fighting Robots

It made all the sense in the world to remake King Kong in 1976. The original changed the face of cinema, sure, but it had been over forty years earlier. Ages ago. The time felt right, and with mega-producer Dino De Laurentiis behind the scenes failure seemed to be the last thing on anyone’s mind.

Then again, kidnapping a giant ape from its homeland, bringing it back to the United States, and parading it around town like some sort of circus sideshow, seemed like a good idea as well.

Yes, King Kong 1976 was a pretty big failure, critically and commercially. There’s no getting around it. Production problems were minimal, but the budget ballooned and the shooting schedule expanded beyond eight months. A 40-foot tall replica of Kong was built for a large portion of the film, but looked so awkward it wound up with merely seconds of screen time. Critics derided this larger-than-life remake, perhaps undone by its own bombastic publicity tour and ego-filed poster leading up to the film’s release:

King Kong

And there was the film itself, heavy on effects and camp dialogue, light on any sort of substance. The strange sexual relationship between the big ape and newcomer Jessica Lange, playing a ditzy flower-child lost at sea, and the love triangle between her, Kong, and hippie activist Jack Prescott (Jeff bridges) threw off audiences for sure. King Kong ’76 had everything going in its favor ahead of time, but was then upended by its desire to be, more than anything, something different.

Let’s not get it twisted.. this isn’t some sort of unheralded masterpiece. But Disco Kong absolutely has its merits. There are things in John Guillermin’s movie that work, and work well, but over the years have been lumped in with the whole stink surrounding the film’s ultimate failure. Take the three lead performances, for example. Jessica Lange is in her film debut here, and she’s totally weird in a captivating sort of way. Her Dwan is some sort of expired leftover from the late 60s, found adrift at sea after a party yacht went belly up. So fitting. Think about the backstory here, a surface barely scratched in the movie but exemplified by Lange’s intentionally spacey turn as the damsel.

From her kidnapping to her curious sexual relationship with Kong, Lange commits fully to this off-kilter performance and must be acknowledged for the direction she does take Kong’s object of desire. In the 1933 original, Faye Wray is repulsed by the monster from stem to stern, never finding anything to like in him. Peter Jackson’s 2005 remake stuck to the original with great loyalty, except when it came to the relationship between beauty and beast. That part is owed to Lange.

And let’s not forget the third wheel in this romantic triangle, the long-haired activist Jack played with some adventurous gusto by Bridges. This is Jeff Bridges here! He’s doing some admirable work with even the most absurd dialogue, and the chemistry between he and Dwan somehow manages to work. Especially when they decide to stop off for a drink in New York while Kong is in pursuit. How very bourgeoise 70s of them.

Third is Charles Grodin as the money-hungry oil tycoon Fred Wilson, who sees nothing but dollar signs in Kong. His character ties directly into something else that works here; this is the late 70s, the beginning of America’s oil crisis, what better villain than some major petrol corporation? It’s a perfect fit for the time, giving this King Kong its own time stamp and its own personality. The entire movie feels like a late 70s potluck of excess, evil corporations, a dude in a monkey suit trying to get a dress off a young blonde, and two former hippies falling in love with each other. You can’t convince me cocaine wasn’t involved somewhere in preproduction meetings or script brainstorming sessions.

There are other elements of King Kong and The Sunshine Band that cannot be wholly dismissed. The score rumbles and thunders and announces its presence with authority; the natives on Skull Island are a fascinating bunch; even though much of the effects don’t hit home, set pieces like the subway train attack are still thrilling. But, yes, the pomposity of the story, the shoddy writing, and the clumsiness of several key moments in the film hold it back. Then again… the finale atop the World Trade Center carries incredible weight and a surprising amount of bloodshed. Obviously, it’s a give and take of good, bad, and some ugly, but is it not a highly entertaining adventure picture first and foremost.

King Kong, The Carter Years may not live up to its potential – a potential set by De Laurentiis and the marketing team, remember – but try and look beyond the failures here and see the sort of weird, gleeful 70s vibe of the whole endeavor. I adore King Kong’s entire history in cinema. Like so many, he was my introduction into monster movies, and I have celebrated his films and all their iterations throughout the years (yes, even the abysmal King Kong Lives in the 80s). It’s hard not to label this version, while flawed, as the most fun of the group. Sue me.

Don’t Let Superhero Fatigue Keep You From ‘LEGION’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

FX Network’s Legion may be based on Marvel’s X-Men comics, but that doesn’t mean it’s in the same boat as Arrow or Luke Cage. For some, there are just too many comic book based shows and films anymore. Superhero fatigue is becoming a real thing for certain viewers, don’t let that keep you from experiencing Legion.

In this age of entertainment, every comic book property possible is getting some sort of on-screen adaptation. For fans like me, it’s a glorious time as we’re starting to get more abstract projects. FX wanted to get in on the action, and it doesn’t get more abstract than lesser known X-Men characters; like David Haller.

legion david elevator

Fear not general audience, Legion is not your average comic book show. It has nothing in common with the CW’s programs, or even Marvel’s Netflix properties. In just five episodes, Legion has transcended the genre into something outrageous and beautiful. It’s a triumph for comic book properties of course, but it’s much more than that.

Marvel’s Netflix series, Daredevil, was an accomplishment for superhero television as a genre. Legion is an accomplishment for television in general. It’s barely recognizable as an X-Men property. Fargo creator, Noah Hawley, has another thought provoking masterpiece on his hands. Fans of that series can easily transition, there are plenty of familiar elements.

Don’t get me wrong, the show does feature more than one mutant, and displays plenty of super powers. However it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before. The show is a mind-game, it challenges viewers in ways no other show can. The superhero influence isn’t used as a crutch. It’s merely an element that allows the narrative to go to places beyond human comprehension.

The series has more elements of horror than it does of super-heroics. It’s a science-fiction mystery puzzle unfolding in the name of mutants. There’s no crime fighting, or justice serving. The story focuses on David, who may or may not be a paranoid schizophrenic. His super-human abilities don’t make him a Superman, they make him a nuclear warhead with a trigger nobody understands.

legion parasite

Legion has more in common with InceptionThe ShiningThe Big Lebowski, and Memento than it does with any other superhero property. If you’re feeling the very real fatigue of superhero over-saturation, don’t let it keep you from this stunning experience.

This doesn’t mean that comic book fans have nothing to grab onto. The show is very much entrenched in reminders that this is an X-Men story; they’re just deeper rooted. Dear ol’ David Haller is in good hands, Dan Stevens stays true to his comic book counterpart. That being said, viewers coming from Flash will certainly be taken out of their comfort zone.

Women in Comics by the Numbers: The 2016 Creator Scorecard

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Yesterday was International Women’s Day, a fantastic day devoted to celebrating and highlighting women around the world. IWD is a great time to pick up new comic books created by and/or about women. It is also an important time to reflect on the contributions of women to this industry, and the continued obstacles they face. Publishing companies must be held responsible for what they produce. As customers, we must be responsible in what we buy. In service of that, here is was the state of women’s representation in comics for 2016. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t great.

The State

We took the 500 best-selling comics (106 unique titles) of 2016, sourced from Comichron, and then marked if they had a woman either as the writer or the artist. The result is disheartening to say the very least. Women were on the creative teams of:

  • 17% of titles
  • 11% of comics
  • 11% of DC comics
  • 8% of Marvel comics
  • 28% of Image comics
  • 43% of combined Boom, IDW, Archie, and Dark Horse comics

Teams without a woman sold an average of 82,896 copies. Teams with a woman sold on average a full 6,591 issues less.

This is a not-astonishing but very disheartening disparity. As a result, 2016 gets an score for gender balance. You failed 2016 (surprise).

Some caveats

Let’s start with some limitations on this data. First, it was pulled from Comichron, which gathers estimates from Diamond Comic Distributor’s end of month reports. This does not take into account digital sales, or actual sales to consumers: this is just what Diamond is sending to shops. Also, anyone who isn’t listed as a main artist or writer was not considered in the team. This is not a remark on the contribution of colorists, inkers, letters, or editors to the final product; they are integral and should be celebrated and analyzed. But, there was time limitations, so we stuck with main writer and author.

What it all means

So what does this all mean? To make it clear right out of the gate: the wrong interpretation is “books sell less when women are on them, because women are on them.” No. Wrong. Go home. However, some reasons seem more likely than others. First, there’s just less of them. It’s nigh impossible to have parity with all-men teams if the number of women creators isn’t even close. Additionally, of the 53 comics issues created with women, 9 did not feature a woman. This suggests that women are more likely to be put on books about women, which are notoriously less advertised and supported by their publishers and shops. They are also purchased less by consumers. Which brings us back to you.

What can you do

You should do this every day, not just IWD:

  1. The almighty dollar: spend it on books written by and about women. These are businesses first and foremost, and they respond to where dollars are being spent.
  2. Ask for recommendations from your friends, local shop owners, the Internet, Monkeys Fighting Robots, me, and we will give them to you.
  3. Speak out. Tweet or Facebook or email your publishers, and demand that they hire more women. Ask your shop to order more books written by or about women.
  4. Read them, and then recommend or give them to your friends! That’s how you grow a base of support.
  5. Listen. Listen to when women speak out about this problem. Listen to creators who discuss the problems within the industry. Listen to the fans who beg for their beloved franchises to be better. Listen.

Do you have a favorite book created by or about women? Let us know in the comments!

Nintendo Switch Hardware – The Good & The Bad

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The Nintendo Switch is an amazing console. After just under a week with the system, I’ve garnered my thoughts into a lists of positives and negatives.

Disclaimer: I’ll only be talking about Switch hardware in this article. So, no, I won’t be raving about how incredible The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is.

The Good

Screen resolution – Critics of the system can make whatever judgements they want, but after hours and hours playing Zelda and Fast RMX in handheld and tabletop mode, I’ve had only compliments to make about the 6.2 inch screen. Although on paper it’s only 720p, in reality it look absolutely fantastic and is truly astonishing when taking into account how demanding some visuals are.

Joy-Con – I was skeptical about the Joy-Con at first. Initially, the tech seemed like a beefed up version of the Wii-Mote, which is exactly what Nintendo needed to get away from. Fortrunately, I was wrong. The Joy-Con feel comfortable and, although small, work properly for my hands.

User Interface – The Switch’s user interface is sleek, simple, and speedy. Going from the dinosaur that was the Wii U, this UI is refreshing for everyone upgrading from Nintendo’s last home console.

The Dock – There isn’t much to be said about the dock. However, its job is simple and it does it perfectly: project the system’s visuals onto your television.

The Bad

Lack of features – While I’m loving Zelda, Fast RMX, and the screenshot feature, I would’ve liked some other apps and features to explore. Considering that I can post screenshots on Twitter and Facebook directly from the system, would it have been that challenging to get those actual apps on Switch? I really doubt it.

Digital triggers – Call this a nitpick, but Nintendo’s use of digital triggers on the Switch is a negative for me. I’ve always prefered analog triggers, as they allow more freedom in racing games and genuinely feel higher quality than their digital counterparts.

Overall, the Switch is an amazing piece of technology. It’s selling like hotcakes around the world, and I hope the momentum can continue in Nintendo’s favor.

Celebrating The Baddest Women In Fiction For International Women’s Day

Monkeys Fighting Robots

It’s International Women’s Day, a time to celebrate all the women who have done incredible things throughout the world. The real world presents us with role models like Malala, Elizabeth Warren, and Beyoncé. All around the globe, women are scientists, mothers, soldiers, and leaders. On that global scale, movies and television help us create a connection that just about every culture (maybe not North Korea) enjoys. For a long time in film history, women were relegated to secondary roles like “The wife,” “the secretary,” or “the maid.” Fortunately, with plenty of persistence, a feminist movement, and evolving cultural awareness, females in films and television are gaining the respect they deserve.

The women on our list are not only characters who kick serious arse equal to any male, but are played by some fantastically fierce actresses.

11. Honorable Mention: Laura X-23

It’s safe to say, after a nearly 90 million dollar opening weekend that Logan is a hit. The “last film” (I’ll believe it when I see it) of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine features gritty, violent action and an epic, post-apocalyptic story. In the film, Logan protects a little girl named Laura who is a mutant. Laura slices and dices her way through the movie alongside Logan, going on to become the breakout star of the flick. The future of female badassery on film looks bright, like sunlight glinting off of razor-sharp claws.
