Awards season is about to start its big push. We still have Steven Spielberg’s historical drama, The Post, and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread – which just so happens to be Daniel Day-Lewis’s last movie as well – on the horizon. But there’s been plenty to enjoy so far in 2017, a year of big movies and small movies and some tremendous movie moments in both. You may have forgotten about some of these – stuff moves pretty fast these days – so this Turkey Day, here’s 12 movie moments to be thankful for in 2017…

6Taylor Sheridan’s Directorial Debut, WIND RIVER

Sicario and Hell or High Water were some of my favorite films of 2015 and 2016, respectively. The more I see Sicario, the more it climbs my all-time list. The scribe behind these great thrillers, Taylor Sheridan, got his chance to step behind the camera for 2017, and he did not disappoint.

Wind River is the third film in his unofficial trilogy, which he explained himself. It’s a fantastic thriller, but it pulls double duty as it shines a light on the complicated and bleak realities of life on Indian reservations in America. This is a film almost devoid of humor, unlike Hell or High Water, and with a more personal approach than Sicario. It may be a tough watch, but Jeremy Runner, Elizabeth Olsen, and the rest of the cast deliver the goods. Here’s to a dozen more Taylor Sheridan joints in the future.
