Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: The Force Awakens!
There were hundreds of questions leading up to The Force Awakens. But for every one question the film answered, it seemingly spawned a whole band of new ones. One of the biggest enduring mysteries is what is up with Supreme Leader Snoke.
Very little was revealed about this character during production, and the finished product didn’t really answer who he actually is. All that’s known is that he runs the First Order, he wants Luke Skywalker removed from the picture, and he’s responsible for turning Ben Solo into Kylo Ren. He is probably a Sith Lord, and he casts a pretty menacing hologram, but is there more to his story? Here are the five most likely, and most serious theories (sorry Boba Fett theorists):
2. Jedi Holocron Projection
It is possible that Supreme Leader Snoke isn’t actually a tangible being? Holocrons were the devices used by Jedi (and Sith) for educational purposes, as depicted in The Clone Wars cartoon and other Expanded Universe titles. They projected holograms to teach the users about the history of the Force and how to use it. Holograms, as in the only way Snoke has been seen so far. Granted, previous theories point out how Sidious was only shown in hologram form for a while too. But dig this:
What is known about Snoke? He managed to seduce Ben Solo to the Dark Side of the Force while he was under Luke’s tutelage. The Force Awakens and the Marvel comics acknowledge that Luke has spent time hunting down Jedi Temples, which means he probably collected some Jedi artifacts. What if he managed to get his hands on some holocrons and was using them to teach the next generation of Jedi? What if one of those holocrons was actually Sith, and held the embodiment of an ancient Sith Lord, Snoke? And what if Ben Solo spent a little too much time studying this particular holocron? The movies don’t usually like to address the Expanded Universe this directly, but this may be the most interesting theory of the group.
