Frenetic Fun, Sexual Innuendos, And Science On Netflix As ‘Bill Nye Saves The World’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

America’s favorite scientist, Bill Nye, returns with Bill Nye Saves The World, a new Netflix series aimed at reminding adults that science applies to them too. From climate change to Monsanto, Bill Nye tackles the important issues facing human existence. It’s well-produced, high-energy, whip-smart, and even a bit controversial depending on where you stand on certain subjects. In this time where it seems facts are being swallowed up by ignorance, will the show slap sense into people?

From the very opening moments, Nye reminds people that this is not his old Disney show or a kids show. It’s like The Next Generation compared to the original Star Trek. Bill Nye Saves the World is sophisticated but hip; it’s smart but in a much more refined way. The theme song, produced by Tyler the Creator, could be used to hype up a football team before a game, particularly if an important player or coach is named Bill.

For people into alternative facts, this show will be supremely irritating. Too bad.

A rising, windowed wall doubles as a screen where Nye’s correspondents report from around the world. The correspondents are an interesting mix that includes model Karlie Kloss, comedian Joanna Hausmann, and science educator Derek Muller. Other segments include Bill Nye sharing an unfiltered thought in “Bill Needs A Minute.”

Celebrity guests such as Zach Braff, Tim Gunn, and Wil Wheaton appear on panel discussions or in bits used to explain science. In one bit, San Francisco Giants slugger Hunter Pence hits a baseball into Mars as a way to demonstrate panspermia.

Every episode includes a panel discussion with three guests. It’s at this point where Nye dabbles in discussion and debate. It’s never contentious, but in one episode, the head of much-maligned company Monsanto makes a case for GMOs. Anyone who follows Nye knows he’s okay with GMOs. Social media has taken to saying Nye is a shill for Monsanto. However, it misses the bigger argument. It’s not whether GMOs are good or bad, they’ve been around for a lot longer than most people realize, but whether or not Monsanto should force it on people, in secret, and own the rights to future food supplies?

Fans of Bill Nye rejoice, you get more of the exuberant science guy!

Bill Nye Saves the World doesn’t ever become Real Time with Bill Maher. It’s not trying to be. It is seeking to represent the facts, and on that end, it works, even the bit with Monsanto (sorry haters). Seeing it as anything else is looking for a reason to be triggered.

In other segments, Bill challenges the beliefs of alternative medicine. Comedian Joanna Hausmann shares a hilarious visit to a center that heals with sound. Those sounds include screaming at parts of the body experiencing pain or discomfort. Hausmann should be awarded for keeping a straight face.

Fans of Bill Nye rejoice, you get more of the exuberant science guy! The experiments, segments, discussions and everything else flows in a wildly fun way. That is if you’re into facts. For people into alternative facts, this show will be supremely irritating. Too bad. The realities of climate change, overpopulation, and abundant ignorance don’t take feelings into account. All humans should root for Bill Nye Saves the World since we only have one world to save in the first place.

’13 Reasons Why’ S1 Review: Intriguing Teen Drama That Stumbles Over Morality

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Netflix recently debuted an intense original series. 13 Reasons Why, based off the YA novel, follows a high school reeling from a young girl’s suicide. That is, until the release of said girl’s tapes about her death. Hannah Baker says there are thirteen reasons why she chose to kill herself. 13 Reasons Why, with executive producer Selena Gomez, put a twist on the murder-mystery formula fans loved from Making a Murderer. The show follows her story through flashbacks, as her friend Clay tries to piece everything together.

The series plays like most every teenage slice-of-life project. The writing is reminiscent of the film Perks of Being a Wallflower. The teenagers are all witty and worldly, often outwitting every adult. Normally, this type of program is hard to stomach unless you’re a teenager yourself. However, the murder-mystery element gives 13 Reasons Why a better edge. It’s an easier watch than Perks, or the CW’s teen soap opera Riverdale. They aren’t immune from cringe-y teen dialogue, but the characters are better than most. The show gives its teenagers just enough gravitas to be watchable.

13 Reasons Why

The mystery itself plays pretty by-the-books. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, it just means it works the form well. 13 Reasons Why does a good job of revealing information in small doses. It helps that the show is a contained series, wrapping up its tale in thirteen episodes. Knowing that Hannah took her own life also helped the mystery, in a way. Audiences were left wondering who had hurt Hannah, and exactly what they did. The layers to the mystery was solid and well-paced.

The dynamic between Clay and Hannah is simultaneously intriguing and trite. On the one hand, it’s interesting to see them interact in different times. The over-lapping action makes for interesting posthumous interactions. However, they’re hampered by the stereotypical romance thrust upon them. 13 Reasons Why can’t get through an episode without reminding viewers Clay is a “nice guy.” It turns the relationship between the two protagonists into a bland teen rom-com plot. 13 Reasons Why misses a great opportunity to dissect a normally vanilla character. Their relationship makes the Perks of Being a Wallflower comparisons all too apt. It’s one of the big things that keeps 13 Reasons Why from being truly unique.

13 Reasons Why

As far as the teenagers themselves, there are some disparities in character depth. Some have very well-done stories, while others fall into tropes. The reveal of Zach’s transgression did a good job separating him from the pack. It was also intriguing how Alex’s seemingly harmless action had huge consequences. Marcus, meanwhile, became a blander character with his tape reveal. Ryan also got little development outside of being the “gay best friend” trope.

While not every teenage performance is phenomenal, they are largely better than the adult actors. It’s actually quite amusing how some of the child actors show up the adults. Many of the performances by veteran actors slip into melodrama. Kate Walsh and Brian d’Arcy James have the hefty task of playing Hannah Baker’s parents. While they rarely slip into full over-acting, there are definitely moments of it. Meanwhile, Derek Luke’s performance is largely emotionless. It really is the kids who shine in the series.

13 Reasons Why

The thing that really separates the show from other teenage-centric projects is the dark subject matter. Keep in mind, the set-up for the mystery is the suicide of Hannah Baker. There’s a load of darkness and tragedy in that premise alone. Other kids suffer from similar dark subject matter, like alcoholism and abusive parents. On top of that, there is a lot of the series that is dedicated to discussing sexual assault. The subject matter keeps the show away from standard teenage-centric show fare.

Some would say the realism used to approach such scenes are crucial. The assault scenes are not any more gruesome than the frequent death & torture in other shows. But much like those deaths, the necessity of such realism is questionable. To have not one, but TWO explicit sexual assault depictions is hard to stomach. It’s a lot like the horrifying Ramsay scene from season five of Game of Thrones. There’s powerful, and then there’s gratuitous. 13 Reasons Why winds up on the latter end of the spectrum.

The moral of the story where 13 Reasons Why becomes convoluted. It’s admirable how the show tries to tackle things like assault and suicide in a realistic way. However, the show often goes too far into the edgy material. At the end of the day, Hannah is subjected to terrors no one should have to go through. It’s strange for the series to then subject audiences to it – twice, no less. On top of all that, there’s the problematic conflict resolution. Hanna DOES get her justice through suicide, insinuating it was a good thing. To have that be the message of your series is a huge issue.

13 Reasons Why

This is why the series ultimately falls short of its aspirations. There’s too much silly teen angst, and too much visceral evil. It takes the elements that work and dilutes it. The show’s intentions of treating kids like adults, and exploring important subjects, are noble. But 13 Reasons Why fails to separate its gritty subject matter from its lofty goals. Perhaps that’s as good of a lesson as the show could realistically provide.

Overall, the series works for an adult’s 13-hour binge session. As far as teenage viewers go, perhaps they should stick with Gomez’s other projects. The show doesn’t work in giving viewers a meaningful resolution that justifies its cruelty towards Hannah. You could say that’s the “point” of the series, but that doesn’t justify it. 13 Reasons Why made a show inseparable from its dark subject matter, to its own detriment.

Lady Gaga Switches Her Name & Goes Country For ‘A Star Is Born’ Remake

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Everything You Need To Know About Bradley Cooper & Lady Gaga’s ‘A Star Is Born’ Remake

Don’t call her Gaga! The singer & actress is ditching the name that made her famous for her upcoming ‘A Star Is Born‘ remake. Warner Bros announced in a press release that Lady Gaga will be going by her birth name, Stefani Germanotta, for the project.

With the film attempting to not only appeal to audiences but award voters, it’s a polarizing move. The name Lady Gaga brings a certain level of artistic merit to the film. ‘A Star Is Born‘ could use her credibility to help promote it. But many actors have switched from stage names to real names for films. Dwayne Johnson dropped “The Rock” from his name when he moved from wrestling onto Hollywood roles; finding great success. So the same can happen for Gaga/Germanotta, who already has a Golden Globe for acting.

That’s not the only news to come from the film’s press release. The official plot has been announced and it continues the themes introduced in the three films before it. Bradley Cooper will play Jackson Maine, an alcoholic country singer with a failing career. He soon discovers the unknown but talented Ally, played by Germanotta, and they begin a passionate love affair. He soon pushes her to fame but can’t deal with the fact she is starting to become a bigger star than him.

Star Is Born

‘A Star Is Born’ Invades Coachella 2017

After the press release, the next big update for ‘A Star Is Born‘ came from Coachella. The music festival was used by director Bradley Cooper to film major scenes. Production even used fans for a performance. Germanotta’s Ally performed one of the original songs written for the film, which is said to be called “Diggin’ My Grave”. It’s described as sounding like a Fleetwood Mac song and leaning more to a country/rock vibe. Lady Gaga recently dipped into country on her most recent album ‘Joanne‘ so the singer can use that experience when tackling the songs. The singer is writing all the songs for the film.

The scenes shot at Coachella are said to be very emotional. One scene is the timid Ally trying to work up confidence to perform in front of such a large crowd. Lady Gaga was said to be very strong in-between takes but immersed herself when camera’s rolled. Another scene is with Bradley Cooper’s Jackson Maine as he drunkenly introduces Ally to the crowd before her encore performance. It’s said his character is visibly bothered how the fans took to Ally. This feels like a callback to Barbra Streisand’s 1976 version. People in the audience have said this performance felt magical and played to both actor’s strengths.

The film is set for a September 28th, 2018 release. It’s coming out against very little competition so it can easily score number one at the box office. But the real question is can it reach the acclaim of recent musicals like ‘La La Land‘.

Only time will tell how Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut will turn out. Let me know what you think about the upcoming ‘A Star Is Born‘ remake.

Anime Review: Boku Dake ga Inai Machi (Erased)

Monkeys Fighting Robots

We all have those moments where we wish we could have changed something in our past. But what if it wasn’t your life you were changing, but someone you know little about. How far would you go to save someone that you don’t even know?

Erased

Looking at the Erased

Satoru Fujinuma is a failed manga writer currently working at a pizzeria. Yet with a tragedy about to strike a nearby child, Satoru’s mysterious power “Revival” kicks in. “Revival” sends Satoru back in time, usually a few minutes in order to prevent the problem. With this power, he can change events in time in order to save lives. But when tragedy hits his family, Satoru’s power kicks in sending him back 18 years. Here he must figure out the mysterious murders that occurred during this time. Will he be able to uncover the mystery and save his classmates lives?

Personal Thoughts

Boku Dake ga Inai Machi (Erased) is an incredibly interesting premise that drags you in from the first episode. Since it was so interesting, I ended up finding the manga online since the series had just started. Almost like a drug, I needed my fix. Does the interest follow from start to finish? Without a doubt, Yes. Does interest equal a happy ending though? Well, that is for you to find out. I will say that I was not disappointed at the end though.

Erased

Verdict

While Boku Dake ga Inai Machi was an incredibly good anime, my image of the series was tainted by a bad live-action adaptation. Does this effect the anime series, no. Constantly keeping me entertained I watched each episode weekly from start to finish. Due to this I cannot give the series too many negative qualities. With this being said, I do not recommend watching the live-action series.

RuPaul’s Drag Race: Is Valentina Destined To Be Miss Congeniality Or The Winner?

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Being The Fan-Favorite Of Drag Race Season 9 Could Hurt Valentina

Every season of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race‘ has a favorite that fans get behind. Sometimes becoming that beloved queen also sets you up for failure. Other than Season 5 winner Jinx Monsoon, the fan’s choice and RuPaul’s choice never match up. Usually the fan-favorite wins Miss Congeniality. While it’s a great title to hold with previous icons like Nina Flowers and Katya winning but it’s not the title of “American’s Next Drag Superstar”.

In comes the crown jewel of Season 9, Valentina! With her edit on the show and the fan support, is the Latina love doomed for runner-up?

Going by the numbers, Valentina is in a good spot for a win. At the time of writing, she has a better win/loss record than previous winners Violet Chachki and Raja. So far, Valentina has won one challenge and placed highly in another challenge. While she’s not snatching early wins like Bianca Del Rio, Valentina has started off very strong. The only competitor ahead of her, stats-wise, is Shea Couleé. Where Valentina surpasses Shea Couleé is her looks on the runway. It’s almost like Valentina could wear a diaper at this point and the judges would say they love her smile.

You can also find Valentina in plenty of the marketing for ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race‘, including television appearances. That’s a lot to put on a queen who is less than 2 years into the business. The faith production must have in her speaks volumes for her place on the show. Valentina is even part of The White Party at Parliament House in Orlando, Florida. Being in that show has given a sign at the Top 3 since about season 6.

“I was literally shaking, but I said to myself: Valentina, when in doubt, smile!”
Valentina

With all that on her side, why is Valentina’s win in question?

Because of all that she has working for her. ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race‘ tends to give you what you need, not what you want. The fan favorites like Katya, Latrice Royale, Nina Flowers, and Adore Delano have all won the hearts of America but not the crown. The first three mentioned did take walk away as Miss Congeniality though. It even took till All Stars 2 for Alaska Thunderfuck to finally snatch the win that fans clamored for.

There’s also the debate if the persona Valentina presents is “too much”. The overt cheeriness is off-putting to some but I find the positivity a welcomed change. Some online have called her fake or too gimmicky, the latter being a complaint I find hilarious. Even when confronted by Aja in episode 3 of ‘Untucked‘, Valentina didn’t break character. She combated with Aja by killing her with kindness…the ultimate shade. Still, there has to be a moment when we see a different side of Valentina or else that annoyance will only grow.

Final Thoughts:

I originally predicted Valentina to win the entire show after episode 3. But now the dust is starting to settle, that win isn’t so clear. The love she is being shown could be setting her up for Miss Congeniality. In the end, that title is not bad but it’s not the crown.

The whole “only been doing drag for 10 months” gimmick is something unique for a winner of the show. Even a young queen like Violet Chachki had more experience under her belt when she picked up the win in Season 7. On the opposite side of that coin, RuPaul could want Valentina to continue growing and make an appearance on All Stars 3.

How do you feel? Do you see Valentina as a future winner or future Miss Congeniality?

Let me know in the comments below!

RuPaul’s Drag Race‘ airs Friday at 8pm on VH1.

Fox Sets Release Dates For ‘Deadpool 2’, ‘New Mutants’, & ‘Dark Phoenix’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Fox’s 2018 is stacked!

First to be released, on April 13, is Josh Boon’s New Mutants. So far, fans haven’t gotten much from this project. We saw concept art of Demon Bear, and that’s about it.

Next up, and likely the biggest of the three, is Deadpool 2. The sequel will hit theaters on June 1, a perfect summer release. If you thought the original Deadpool did well at the box office, just wait until this one is unleashed in cinemas.

Lastly, Fox announced a Dark Phoenix movie slated for November 2. Presumably, the story will continue from 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse and feature Sophie Turner as the lead.

The cliche movie to be most excited about is obviously Deadpool 2, but Dark Phoenix caught my eye as well. Turner gave a solid performance as Jean Grey in Apocalypse, and it will be interesting to see how her character progresses.

Which of the three are you most excited about? Sound off in the comments below!

Finale Season: ‘Arrow’ Does Flashbacks to the Very Beginning

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Finale Season

That’s right, it is finale season and we start with ‘Arrow’. This season has kept us guessing, and been surprise after surprise. Even Stephen Amell (Arrow himself) has said this is the best finale in the shows history. With flashbacks being a prevalent thing, it will finally catch us up to current times. We may even get a glimpse of stuff we have never seen before.

“We’ve managed to hopefully stick the landing on it in a cool way that allows us to see both some of the moments right before we first met Oliver in the pilot, where he launched that flaming arrow and it lit up that signal fire, and also maybe a little bit after as well, some of the more emotional moments that we never got to see in the pilot,” Arrow executive producer Wendy Mericle tells Entertainment Weekly.

finale

We finally get to see all the lines connect, and see where the next season could possibly take the team. We will also get to see the complete Oliver origin story,  something we have been waiting for all five seasons.

Synopsis

Newly appointed Mayor Oliver Queen finds himself challenged as he fights on two fronts for the future of Star City. With Diggle back in the military and Thea adamant about hanging up her hood as Speedy, Team Green Arrow is down to just Oliver and Felicity – but they’re no longer the only vigilantes in town. Green Arrow’s public defeat of Damien Darhk at the end of Season Four has inspired a new crop of masked heroes to step up and defend the city. Though their painful inexperience makes them obstacles, rather than allies, in the field. The arrival of a deadly new adversary will force Oliver to confront questions about his own legacy, both as mayor and as the Green Arrow.

Future Flash: Possibly Grant Gustin’s Hardest Role Yet- ‘The Flash’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

‘The Once and Future Flash’

After a long awaited hiatus, we finally get to see Barry Allen talking to… well, Barry Allen. Future Flash comes into play when Barry decides to go travel through space and time to the future. There, he will encounter himself- something he has done before, and has regret.

“It’s a lot of scenes with Barry and Barry,” Gustin explained to TV Line during a recent set visit. “And they’re pretty emotional scenes from both sides. [Future Barry is] about eight years older, which in a way made it more challenging for me, because it wasn’t like, ‘This is my grizzled, older self. They were some of the more challenging scenes I’ve done — if not just this year, in the whole series, because I’m my own scene partner.”

Future Flash

Barry, travels to the year 2024 to find out who Savitar really is, and in doing so, encounters himself. Touching on things the show has never before, it’s expected to be the best episode of the season thus far.

Another reason this episode is special, is their own Tom Cavanagh, (HR Wells) directed this episode. It made it more special for both Gustin and Cavanagh to share the experience. Cavanagh and Gustin are also working together on a crowd-funded short film, called ‘Tom and Grant.’

Synopsis

Barry (Grant Gustin) travels to the future to find out Savitar’s still unknown identity in the hopes of saving Iris (Candice Patton). Upon his arrival in 2024, Barry encounters future versions of his Team Flash friends, who, following the death of Iris, have become very different people, profoundly impacted by their showdown with Savitar. It will be up to Barry to infuse a sense of hope back into the team, as he proves to be hero his future friends have been waiting for. Meanwhile, back in 2017, the hunt for Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker) continues.

The Wicked and the Divine Gives Readers Gender Representation Across the Spectrum and Beyond the Binary Making It the FemmeGeek of the Week Icon

Monkeys Fighting Robots

This week’s FemmeGeek of the Week Icon, The Wicked and The Divine, represents all the diversity that femmegeek represents. Originally, I chose just Lucifer as this week’s FemmeGeek. Thinking about the book, I realized that doing so would alienate a large portion of the characters and those who identify with them.

The Wicked and The Divine has been touted for years as a comics touchstone for the LGBTQIA community. The Wicked and The Divine represents almost every variation of queerness and gender identification on the spectrum. Most importantly, from the position of being a FemmeGeek icon, it represents genderqueer feminine identities in meaninful ways.

For those who haven’t followed The Wicked and The Divine, the book’s premise is that every ninetey years the pantheon of gods is reborn. For two years they will be loved, adored, and powerful. At the end of the two years, they will die. Over the course of those two years, well, over the course of those two years a lot of shit goes down.

Lucifer, the first pantheon member readers meet in The Wicked and The Divine, is constantly referred to as female but presents as gender nonconforming.

Lucifer’s lore represents the angel of hell as mascuine. In fact, the first instance of Lucifer in The Wicked and the Divine states as much. However, Lucifer in Wic/Div was born as Eleanor Rigby and constantly called Luci or she/her. The masculine David Bowie-esque representation with short hair and white pantsuit represents Luci as visually gender nonconforming.

The Wicked and the Divine

The Wicked and the Divine

In the context of femmegeek representation, The Wicked and the Divine presents readers with a wonderfullly unique look at a modern representation of femininity that goes beyond the gender binary. For those women who identify as gender fluid or nonconforming, this important representation was one of the very first to address femininity in this manner.

Moreover, Inanna later on in the story is represented as similar to The Artist Formerly Known as Prince. This presents a male character with gender nonconforming feminine identity. Inanna is a goddess in a nontraditional male identified body who exhibits feminine qualities.

The Wicked and the Divine
Image: Image Comics

Inanna clearly identifies as male while also calling himself the queen of heaven. Additionally, he notes in his introduction to protagonist Laura that he was always afraid of who he was but that upon being granted godhood that he can be “whoever I want to be. I can be whoever I am.” The implications from seeing pre-god Inanna and the final Inanna he becomes in The Wicked and the Divine was that he had been hiding as a traditionally gender identified male who did not feel comfortable in his representation. Being granted godhood allowed him to become more than society had previously allowed.

The importance of these particular representations within the identity of femmegeek cannot be overstated. Femmegeek desires to define all variations of feminine on the gender spectrum. Those identities include ones outside the traditional binary.

The Wicked and the Divine, however, does not simply represent the gender nonconforming identities but also the hypermasculine homosexual  Baal, the traditional masculine heterosexual Baphomet, the bisexual traditional feminine Laura’s narrative, the catlike feminine hypersexual Sakhmet, the traditional heterosexual feminine Amaterasu, the patriarchally mysogynistic Woden, the powerfully feminist feminine Morrigan, and the female identified thought to be asexual lesbian Norns. Each of these different gender and sexual identities provides an opportunity for readers to see themselves in the characters. The Wicked and the Divine represents the spectrum of feminine identity making it the perfect touchpoint for femmegeeks.

Over the last week, discussions of feminine representation have become more immediate. While one mother insists that her child is not transgender but simply a tomboy, the transgender community has noted that the article denies the child a say in their gender decisions and reinforces certain gender binaries. The Wicked and the Divine provides a fictional and visual narrative that helps promote going beyond the binary.

Binary representations of gender in the world continue to harm young people. Whether they are girls who identify as tomboys or boys who like to wear tight fitting women’s style clothing, society forces them to choose between male and female, boy and girl. These limits have been placed on people for hundred of years, with media continuing to perpetuate the myths. As young people choose media, they choose that which represents their identities. Traditional identifying women may choose a character like Black Widow, but for years those gender nonconforming readers have been unable to find characters like themselves. Therefore, with this in mind, we thank The Wicked and the Divine for providing a comics manual for representation across the spectrum that allows for meaningful identification for all femmegeeks.
