The CW Releases Synopsis For ‘Legends Of Tomorrow’ Season Three

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The CW has released an updated synopsis for season three of hit superhero show Legends of Tomorrow. You can read it below.

After the defeat of Eobard Thawne and his equally nefarious Legion of Doom, the Legends face a new threat created by their actions at the end of last season. In revisiting a moment in time that they had already participated in, they have essentially fractured the timeline and created anachronisms – a scattering of people, animals, and objects all across time! Our team must find a way to return all the anachronisms to their original timelines before the time stream falls apart. But before our Legends can jump back into action, Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) and his newly established Time Bureau call their methods into question. With the Time Bureau effectively the new sheriffs in town, the Legends disband – until Mick Rory (Dominic Purcell) discovers one of them in the middle of his well-deserved vacation in Aruba.  Seeing this as an opportunity to continue their time travelling heroics, Sara (Caity Lotz) wastes no time in getting the Legends back together.  We reunite with billionaire inventor Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), the unconventional historian-turned-superhero Nick Heywood (Nick Zano), and Professor Martin Stein (Victor Garber) and Jefferson ‘Jax’ Jackson (Franz Drameh), who together form the meta-human Firestorm. Once reunited, the Legends will challenge the Time Bureau’s authority over the timeline and insist that however messy their methods may be, some problems are beyond the Bureau’s capabilities. Some problems can only be fixed by Legends. Based on the characters from DC, DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Greg Berlanti (‘Arrow,’ ‘The Flash,’ ‘Supergirl’), Marc Guggenheim (‘Arrow,’ ‘Trollhunters,’ ‘Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters’), Andrew Kreisberg (‘Arrow,’ ‘The Flash,’ ‘Eli Stone,’ ‘Warehouse 13’), Phil Klemmer (‘The Tomorrow People,’ ‘Chuck’) and Sarah Schechter (‘Arrow,’ ‘The Flash’)

It sounds like much like they did from season one to season two, the network is playing around with the show’s formula a bit. Legends has been a fun addition to the network’s roster of DC shows, and I for one am glad to see it returning in full. Now if they can also bring back Wentworth Miller as Captain Cold (and in a time travel show anything is possible)!

Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me: Lynch’s Gem 25 Years Later

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In April of 1990, a new television show premiered from film auteur David Lynch. The show was Twin Peaks, and in the blink of an eye, it was a hit. By the time Season one ended, Twin Peaks was one of the highest rated shows on TV. But then, the network made a decision that would change everything. Season two tanked, ending with the show’s cancellation and a cliffhanger ending that’s never been resolved. A year later, Lynch revived Twin Peaks with Fire Walk With Me, a prequel movie that would help add to the mystique of this show. But Fire Walk With Me, as many of Lynch’s movies, was not exactly what fans expected.

Before we go on, let’s catch up those not familiar with the television show. The basics are this: Laura Palmer (Cheryl Lee), the homecoming queen of the local high school is found murdered. FBI agents arrive to investigate the case. Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) begins to meet the colorful, bizarre, and broken characters of the titular town.

By the end of Season one, finding the murderer of Laura Palmer was almost irrelevant. Twin Peaks wasn’t a cop procedural show after all. Lynch was subverting many of the popular primetime soaps that were popular at the time. Twin Peaks was a horror-comedy-drama soap opera. People loved it.

However, ABC wanted Laura Palmer’s murder solved. The network forced Lynch and co-creator Mark Frost to resolve the issue. As if pulling the thread on a sweater, solving that mystery would prove the beginning of the end of the show. By the end of Season Two, Twin Peaks was imploding in spectacular fashion, and ABC cancelled it.

Twenty-five years later and Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me
is as interesting as ever.

Lynch, however, loved the world he’d made. A year later, the director went to work on Fire Walk With Me, a prequel to the show. However, co-creator Frost and Lynch did not see eye-to-eye. So, Lynch went ahead on his own.

As information about the production trickled out, fans hoped for answers, especially to the cliffhanger ending to the second season. Instead, Lynch presented Fire Walk With Me, a film that’s dark, moody, weird (AF), and endlessly interesting.

The premise of Fire Walk With Me follows the last seven days of Laura Palmer. Fans of the show will note that some sequences are already known to viewers. OF course, the ending, or better said, Laura Palmer’s end, was already known too. But that’s part of the weight of terror that presses down on this movie.

Those unfamiliar with Twin Peaks might find Fire Walk With Me partially unwatchable. The film stands on its own. However, some sequences will make almost no sense or even less sense than they’re intended to. Never forget, Fire Walk With Me is a Lynch movie through and through, maybe even one of his best, but wth that comes all the yummy weirdness that gives the director his signature.

Who killed Laura Palmer?

Fire Walk With Me, in part, is like the anti-Twin Peaks. Where the show balanced out a lot of tones, like a dark and shifting sense of humor, the film drops a lot of that. Or at least, the theatrical cut does, but I’m not going to get into the 90 minutes of deleted footage that makes the movie even better.

So, what’s interesting about Fire Walk With Me, now, 25 years after its release? Well, like most of Lynch’s work, there’s a lot of subtexts, both subtle and blunt. Fire Walk With Me starts off with a TV getting smashed by a sledgehammer. It’s as if Lynch himself needed to have this scene to vent his frustrations with how the show ended.

On the TV show, everyone loved the late Laura Palmer. In Fire Walk With Me, we see life through her eyes. We’re learning exactly why everyone loved her. We’re getting glimpses into her fractured life that includes drug use, infidelity, and abuse. Palmer’s life devolves and ends possibly from mystical forces.

Twenty-five years later and Fire Walk With Me is as interesting as ever. Initial critical response was lackluster, and the movie bombed at the box office. But reevaluation of Lynch and his films inevitably leads to a re-watch of Fire Walk With Me. And what more and more people are finding is that Fire Walk With Me, even with its flaws and behind-the-scenes turmoil, is worthy of admiration and a revisit.

As promised by one character to another way back in the original show’s finale, Twin Peaks is returning to TV, 25 years later on Showtime. It premieres May 21, and with Lynch and Frost in complete creative control, we may finally get the fully-realized weird mystery ride they always wanted in the first place.

Tom Hardy Is Venom in The Upcoming Sony ‘Venom’ Movie

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Sony’s ‘Venom’ Solo-Film Just Got A Star & Director!

Venom‘, the solo film for one of Spider-Man’s iconic villains, is beginning to pick up some steam. Sony has said to move this project to the top of their priorities list! The first thing they did was lock down an amazing actor and director for the film.

As reported by HollywoodReporter.com, Tom Hardy is set to star as the titular Venom. Ruben Fleischer will be the director of the project. Fleischer is known for directing ‘Zombieland‘ so the needed mix of humor & horror is there.

Venom

Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner wrote a script for ‘Venom‘. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing along with Amy Pascal.

There are no plot details but Tom Hardy will play Eddie Brock, the character who first became Venom. Eddie Brock/Venom has been a very popular figure in the comics since his 1988 debut. Though he mainly is a villain for Spider-Man, seen in Sam Rami’s ‘Spider-Man 3‘, the character is known to also be an anti-hero. Seems like that’s the role he will place in this solo film. Fans are also hoping to see the inclusion of long-time Venom enemy, Carnage! He could be the perfect villain to kick-off these films, especially with the planned darker tone said to be used in this.

This spin-off of the ‘Spider-Man‘ franchise will serve as the start to movies based on many characters from the comics. The studio is also developing a Silver Sable/Black Cat. With the rebooted ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ coming this summer, Sony is finally starting to turn things around for the franchise. Marvel Studios isn’t connected to this film, though.

Sony also announced the film will be released on Oct. 5th, 2018.

What do you think of this casting and directing choice?

‘Jimmy’s Bastards’ #1: Review to a Kill

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Garth Ennis has always been a writer that understands how to turn great elevator pitches into even better comics. What if the CIA had a super-powered hit-squad? What if a priest literally found God? And now, what if James Bond’s indiscretions came back to haunt him? The result is Jimmy’s Bastards, Aftershock’s latest series which sees Ennis and artist Russ Braun turn their critical eye and crudeness to the super-agent archetype.

Jimmy’s Bastards is an interesting and enjoyable book to read, but a somewhat conflicting one to review. The writing is remarkable in its ability to manifest fully-realised characters from page one. We are instantly transported to a lived-in universe with its own distinct mythos and lore, even if it might be a little familiar to fans of spy-fiction. Like most great stories, these characters have a rich history together that we are only being offered a small glimpse into. Indeed, the premise of a veteran agent confronting the very real sins of the father only works because we recognise that his notoriety and legend is well-earned. This isn’t the newly-bloodied Bond of Casino Royale, but a seasoned master of pulp espionage. Jimmy has to have to equal parts prestige and infamy if we are to believe that the secret society plotting his demise have a genuine grievance.

Yet, it is in the reveal of those enemies that the pitch kind of goes astray. To go into further detail would be to dwell into spoiler territory, but suffice to say, when you think the absurdity has reached its limit, it accepts that as a challenge. Jimmy may not be the most likable character, he might even be amoral, but there is something compelling about him regardless. There are hints of hidden depths, of an understanding of his place in an absurdist fantasy. Characters like Jimmy keep us with books, but the plot is what drives them forward and allows them to develop. As much as I enjoyed the book, I’m unsure if the dangling plot-point is strong enough to support the kind of arc that sustains a book in a harsh market.

Braun’s interiors are a dynamic delight invoking the pulp sensibilities of Archer and cheesy genre paperbacks. It reflects the characters’ own cartoonish nature, or at least those surface-level elements. Each character exudes the tropes of their fore-bearers whether it be the cocky agent, the femme fatale, maniacal menace, or gadget-obsessed techie. There is a joy to each of the action scenes and character designs that show Braun is well versed in genre conventions. The flow and energy of each of the panel accurately recreates the drive of a Bond in medias res opening-scene.

Jimmy’s Bastards brings spy-fiction back to comics in a comedic and violent subversion of the genre’s core elements. It’s a book with a lot of potential and that’s both its greatest strength and weakness. It will undoubtedly be a thrilling romp either way, but it may read better in trade than it does in single issues. Assuming it stays on track, then this is your book, should you choose to accept it.

New George Romero Zombie Movie Is Coming To Get You

Monkeys Fighting Robots

George Romero Will Present ‘Road of the Dead’!

The king of zombie films is always crafting something new. George A. Romero Presents: Road of the Dead‘ will head to the Fantasia International Film Festival in July. George Romero will write the film with Matt Birman, who will also direct the project.

Frontières, the Fantasia International Film Festival’s annual film co-production market, announced the zombie film in their first wave of projects for the 9th edition. The genre film festival has played host to big premieres of ‘Red State‘, ‘Curse of Chucky‘, and ‘Final Destination 5‘. Many are expecting this project to be a huge headliner.

“They’re Coming To Get You, Barbara”

It’s a shame that George Romero isn’t returning to the director’s chair for this installment but maybe it’s for the best as his recent entries didn’t do well. The last film Romero directed for the long-running ‘Dead’ franchise is ‘Survival of the Dead‘, sitting at 30% on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. Keeping zombie movies alive is something important to George Romero so passing the torch to a younger director is smart.

Road of the Dead‘ was originally pitched about 10 years ago by director Matt Birman. The story is said to be set on an island where zombie prisoners race cars in a modern-day Coliseum for the entertainment of wealthy humans. Birman describes the project as ‘Road Warrior‘ meets ‘Rollerball‘ but it sounds more like ‘Death Race 2000‘. The two men have worked together in the past as Birman served as a second unit director for the last 3 Romero films. The future of the franchise is in very capable hands.

The Fantasia International Film Festival takes place from July 20th through July 23rd.

The Official Synopsis For ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Has Been Released

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Most of us comic/movie nerds already know what to expect from the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War. But for those few who don’t know, and official synopsis has finally been released by Marvel Studios. You can read it below.

As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.

Nothing terribly surprising, but it’s still cool to see “Thanos”, “despot”, and “intergalactic infamy” in the press release for a real movie if you ask me! Time to dig out those Infinity Gauntlet comics before the film comes out!

Avengers: Infinity War is filming now under directors Anthony and Joe Russo, from a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

The (huge!) cast includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Pom Klementieff, and Josh Brolin as the villain Thanos. The movie and its as-yet-untitled sequel are filming back-to-back for a May 4, 2018, and May 3, 2019, release, respectively.

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Season 9: The Rise & Fall Of Valentina

Monkeys Fighting Robots

How Does One Of The ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Frontrunners Stumble So Hard?

The meteoric rise to the top and tragic fall of Valentina is quite perplexing. It wasn’t too long ago when I declared that Valentina was going to be either Miss Congeniality or the Drag Race Season 9 winner but something very different happened…

During the latest episode, Valentina seemingly gave up during the lip-sync battle!

The downfall really started during this week’s challenge. The girls were all tasked with putting together a pilot for a fictional and campy TV series. It was easy for most to get into a group but that left the two outsiders Valentina and Nina Bo’Nina Brown all by themselves. Forced to pair up, this creative but flawed duo could’ve made magic but instead flopped. Forgoing any script, the two queens tried to improvise. It was obvious the airhead nature of Valentina and “Debbie Downer”-persona Nina Bo’Nina Brown weren’t clicking. As a fan of both, you could only hope they could’ve been saved by a good edit. That wasn’t the case.

Drag Race

“One day, she’ll run out of perfection”

Rightfully so, the judges read Valentina and Nina Bo’Nina Brown for their poor performance in the challenge. Most of the judges enjoyed their trainwreck but felt disappointed by these two strong competitors. Viewers got a red herring for the bottom 2 as Alexis Michelle failed in the challenge and on the runway. Ultimately, Alexis Michelle was safe and the bottom 2 was set. It was Nina Bo’Nina Brown vs Valentina!

The lip-sync starts, Valentina is still wearing the mask from the runway. At first, you think it’s building up for a dramatic reveal. The judges audibly let out their confusion while RuPaul silently looks on. Then suddenly enough is enough and RuPaul stops the lip-sync!

Nothing like this has happened on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race‘ before. Kindly, RuPaul asks Valentina to remove the mask. Valentina then proceeds to put up a fight with RuPaul. Eventually, the mask does come off and the lip-sync restarts. It’s made very clear that Valentina doesn’t know the words to the song. The young queen seemed defeated.

Nina Bo’Nina Brown basically got handed this win. Her lip-sync performance was very strong but the forfeit by Valentina made it that much easier. To be honest, I was crafting this article while the episode unfolded but centered it around Nina Bo’Nina Brown and the self-sabotage but this twist shook things up!

This is also the second lip-sync forfeit of the season as many remember the infamous Charlie Hides and Trinity Tayor battle. That’s the moment Charlie Hides just stood there and clapped along to the song with no intention of performing. I wonder what about season 9 is so cursed that had so many scandalous moments like injuries and quitting.

To see the drama contiuned, check out Untucked from World of Wonder:

The next episode of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race‘ airs on Friday, May 26th at 8 pm.

What do you think about this elimination? Did you expect Valentina to go home so soon?
