Is The MCU Ready For Civil War?

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Disney’s very own expo, D23, is in full swing and today Marvel dropped the trailer for it’s next superhero outing, Captain America: Civil War. If you find it somewhere and can get past the shaky cam, and overly excited audience you’ll see a pretty exciting sneak peak.  The story will pit superhero against superhero, brother against brother, alliances will be shattered, and nothing will be the same.

But, is the Marvel Cinematic Universe ready to introduce this conflict?

Spoilers Ahead

Civil War is based on a comic by writer Mark Millar. It was a huge “event” story that introduced the concept of the Superhero Registration Act. Basically, after an incident involving a group of third rate superheroes trying to stop some villains, sadly their good intentions end up causing an explosion that destroyed half a town, including a school full of kids.

The government’s response was to introduce a policy that would require all super powered individuals to register with the government and serve their interests. This caused a divide in the superhero community, Iron Man embraced working for the government, and Captain America led a resistance against the government. It was a fascinating conflict that really changed up the Marvel comics, and created some interesting stories.

It doesn’t matter what the inciting incident is, the main point of this conflict is to see how the superheroes are going to react when they learn that they are taking sides against their fellow companions.

But, this leads back to the initial question, “Is the MCU ready for Civil War?”

Sadly, there isn’t a straight answer for this. Because, in some ways, they’ve set up certain elements for this conflict. The relationship between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers in particular seems to be reaching a point that’s about to boil over. Avengers Age Of Ultron really demonstrated their occasional disdain for each other’s ideology, and choices. The comic Civil War focuses on their relationship. Iron Man viewing registration as a necessary evil, while Captain America is uncompromising in his beliefs. Neither side is without flaw, but showing them willing to do whatever it takes to stand by those beliefs is vital to making this story work.

The real conflict in this story details the accounts of the other characters. Seeing how they picked sides, debated beliefs, and turned on their friends made the story so much more heartbreaking. Particularly when established characters do pretty horrible things to each other in order to do what’s right in the end. So this is how the story elevates the conflict further than just a grudge match.

The new movie is expected to have over a dozen superheroes, (one wonders why this isn’t just called Avengers Civil War?) most of them have been introduced already through previous movies. Some of them will be introduced for the first time in this movie. But here’s the thing, we haven’t really seen a lot of these new characters interact with each other for more than a few scenes. There are some exceptions (Cap and Black Widow, Cap and Falcon, Falcon and Ant-Man, Iron Man and War Machine etc.) but we haven’t had time to see all these characters interact with each other well enough to establish strong relationships.

Relationships that are going to have to be broken in order for this movie to really work.

This might be because Marvel’s Phase 2 initially focused more on going over already established characters rather than building on these relationships. We didn’t really see what one Avenger thought of another until Captain America Winter Soldier, which explored the relationship between Black Widow and Captain America, while introducing Falcon.

This does lead to a serious problem for the movie adaptation that asks, “Why should we invest in these new characters fighting each other? What do they have at stake?”

The comic was able to answer these, because it was building on decades of established history. Sure the movies also have an established history, but some characters have more depth than others at this point. We as an audience don’t really know enough about Scarlet Witch to determine how her views on the registration act will affect other characters. This applies to just about every other character that isn’t Captain America an Iron Man. If they aren’t established well enough to have a direct impact on the story, then they are just going to be bodies for the fight scenes.

Now obviously all of this rambling does not mean the movie is going to be bad or good. It just means that this is a huge project to work on, and despite the fact that the movie does seem overcrowded with all these super heroes, I personally have faith that the Russo Brothers will be able pull this off. And I’m excited to see what the final film will be. I just like to exercise cautious optimism with a bit of skepticism.

But, what do you guys think? Is Marvel ready for the Civil War? Or should it have been pushed back? Let us know in the comments below.

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Today at Disney’s D23 Expo a new poster for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was unveiled. Take a look.

The art was courtesy of Drew Struzan, who famously created the most iconic posters for the Star Wars and Indiana Jones trilogies. This poster seems to confirm that Finn (John Boyega) at the very least will be wielding a lightsaber in the film or perhaps even a Jedi. The poster features Han Solo (Harrison Ford) , Finn (John Boyega) , Rey (Daisy Ridley), and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18th, 2015.

D23: Marvel Unveils First ‘Captain America : Civil War’ Footage At D23 Expo 2015

Captain America: Civil War

Kevin Feige brought Anthony Mackie and Chris Evans to the Marvel D23 Expo presentation and they came bearing gifts! The audience in attendance got an exclusive sneak peak of Marvel’s upcoming Mega Event movie Captain America : Civil War. The footage they presented has not been released online yet but Entertainment Weekly has the full description here to get you excited. Ready to get your nerdgasm? Here we go!

The new Avengers are in buildings overlooking a crowded market in what appears to be a third-world country. “Eyes on target, folks,” Captain America says. Falcon says, “Red Wing, launch,” and a small drone hovers free and dives down to the street, swooping beneath a truck, which is loaded with explosives. Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson is in a café.) “It’s a battering ram,” she says. The team closes in, and the truck opens up—revealing Crossbones, a.k.a. Brock Rumlow (played by Frank Grillo, from The Winter Soldier). He spots Cap moving in and throws a magnetic bomb onto Cap’s vibranium shield. Cap thinks fast, throwing the shield into the sky just as it detonates.

He is now unarmed, and Crossbones pummels him. The rest of Crossbones’ crew springs to action. Falcon blocks machine gun fire with his wings. Black Widow flips through the air, sending bad guys flying. Crossbones grips Cap and slams him into a concrete wall. He leers at the hero from behind a metallic, skull-shaped masked. “You dropped a building on my face,” he snarls, a reference to the conclusion of The Winter Soldier. Cap rips his gauntlet off and pushes free, then tears off the metal mask. Crossbones kneels, defeated, and mutters: “You know … he remembered you. Your pal … your buddy … Your Bucky.” Turns out, Captain America does have a weak spot.

From there we get the Marvel Studios logo and cut to William Hurt as Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross—the former general, known as the nemesis of The Incredible Hulk. “The world owes you an unpayable debt,” Ross says as images of past heroism play onscreen. “While a great many people see you as a hero, there are some who prefer the word vigilante. People are afraid.” Cap is indignant. “This job, we try to save as many as we can. Sometimes that doesn’t mean everybody,” he says. Then we see a shot familiar to anyone who waited for the end credits scene after Ant-Man. The Winter Soldier himself, Cap’s old friend Bucky Barnes (played by Sebastian Stan), is trapped in a warehouse with his metallic arm locked in a vice. “Buck … You know me?” The assassin whose mind was wiped in the previousCaptain America movie looks up. “My mom’s name was Sarah,” he says. “You used to wear newspapers in your shoes.” Then we get a reunion between Cap and another powerful being: Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. “Sometimes I want to punch you in your perfect teeth,” he says.

Something has happened. Something that can’t be undone. The world wants heroes to stay heroes, but they need to be regulated. Controlled. We see a flash of heroes. Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Paul Bettany as The Vision (wearing street clothes! A dapper suit), Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye striking a pose with his bow and arrow, Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa– in regular clothes, and also in his Black Panther armor, complete with gloves that extend razor-sharp blades from the fingernails.

As we see various teams of powerful beings running at each other, the footage cuts to another van—this one with Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man inside. He meets Cap and totally geeks out. “Captain America…” he says, awestruck, shaking his idol’s hand. And shaking it some more. And then some more. “I’m shaking your hand too long,” he says. Pinwheeling around, he looks at Scarlet Witch. “I know you, too!” Ant-Man says. “You’re great!” He tries to play it cool. “I want to say I know you know a lot of super people, so thinks for thanking of me,” he says. Then pauses. Blinks. “Thanks for thinking of me,” he corrects himself.

Whew! Have you recovered yet? Hopefully Marvel follows Warner Bros. example and release the teaser online or everyone. Until then, be sure to come back to Monkeys Fighting Robots for more from D23 2015.

D23: New Details on Doctor Strange Revealed

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Kevin Feige took to the stage at Disney’s D23 Expo earlier today and dished out a few new details on Marvel’s highly anticipated Doctor Strange live action adaptation. Feige started off the panel saying

“Today, 2015, I stand here, and we have now completed Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I want to say think you,” he said. “So the question is what am I going to talk about today. It seems to make sense … to talk about the beginnings of Phase 3.” And continued

“The first one I’m going to talk about today is Doctor Strange. The goal is to continue expanding what a comic book movie is, what the Marvel Cinematic Universe is. The comics traverse these dimensions, and film by film, we try to do that in a cinematic way, Next year with Doctor Strange continuing to push the boundaries of that cinematic universe.”download (11)

Feige also confirmed that filming on Doctor Strange doesn’t begin until November, as well as Tilda Swinton’s casting as ‘The Ancient One” and Chiwatel Ejiofor as “Mordo”. Fans in attendance were treated to a very early concept art, which is described by Deadline as  “kind of great and makes Doctor Strange look like a cross between Inception and Krull”.

Benedict Cumberbatch who wasn’t in attendance appeared via a prerecorded video where he promised fans

“You’re gonna get girls, cars, explosions and astral projection.”

Marvel’s Doctor Strange will hit theaters on November 4 2016 and stars Cumberbatch as the titular hero.
