‘His Dark Materials’ Trilogy to be Adapted by BBC One

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The His Dark Materials Trilogy was a popular and critically acclaimed series of young adult novels by Phillip Pullman. It has been adapted for BBC Radio 4, a two-part play for the Royal National Theatre in London and a failed movie adaptation in 2007 with The Golden Compass. Now fans of the novels can rejoice because an initial eight-part TV series has been commissioned for BBC One.

The His Dark Materials Trilogy have collectively been adapted into 40 languages and sold nearly 17.5 Million copies worldwide. It has won the Carnegie Medal for children’s fiction in 1995 and the 2001 Whitbread Book of the Year Award. The three novels are Northern Lights (The Golden Compass in the USA), The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass and tells a huge story around many different worlds, having armor-clad polar bears, witches, a water-faring travelling people, soul sucking spectres, angels and animal-magnifications of human souls.
the golden compass still
The novels focus on two characters, Lyra Belacqua, an orphan girl from a streampunk, Victorian version of Oxford and Will Parry, a boy from our world who accidently kills a man. Both end up being key to end a multi-dimensional war between the forces for and against the Authority and may be able can destroy tyranny across the worlds.

Author Phillip Pullman said “It’s been a constant source of pleasure to me to see this story adapted to different forms and presented in different media. It’s been a radio play, a stage play, a film, an audiobook, a graphic novel — and now comes this version for television.” He added: “In recent years we’ve seen how long stories on television, whether adaptations [Game of Thrones] or original [The Sopranos, The Wire], can reach depths of characterisation and heights of suspense by taking the time for events to make their proper impact and for consequences to unravel. And the sheer talent now working in the world of long-form television is formidable. For all those reasons I’m delighted at the prospect of a television version of His Dark Materials.”

2007’s The Golden Compass has impressive cast that included Daniel Craig, Nicole Kidman and Eva Green, but was mired with production problems and studio interference which lead to director Chris Weltz calling the experience ‘terrible’. The studio toned down the anti-religious themes in attempt to appease religious group which resulted in annoying fans of the novels and being unable to appeal to an audience that was never interested.

The series is set to be filmed in Wales, with Bad Wolf Productions, a British/American production company founded by former BBC executives Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner and New Line Cinema running the production. Bad Wolf has recently signed a non-exclusive first-look deal with HBO.

Considering the complexity of the source a TV adaptation of The His Dark Materials Trilogy would be the most sensible approach. Hopefully it will wash out the nasty aftertaste of the Hollywood adaptation.

Review: ‘The Peanuts Movie’ Charlie Brown Finally Gets The Win

Monkeys Fighting Robots

It’s easy to assume when movie executives green-lit The Peanuts Movie, they were motivated by a little bit of nostalgia and a whole lotta dollars. After all, Charlie Brown and the rest of the characters created by Charles Schulz have been a huge business for decades, and it makes sense that they would put something together if for no other reason than to keep the characters active in pop culture.

The team behind The Peanuts Movie was very serious about staying true to the legacy of these iconic characters. We see Snoopy on screen as a troubled beagle who not only is trying to write the next great American novel, but is trying to teach his best friend to dance to modern songs (Yes, Snoopy can bust a move). We see Sally Brown beaming with pride as her brother is honored for achieving a perfect score on his standardize test, but we also witness her capitalizing on her brother’s new found celebrity. It’s that mixture of old-school Peanuts cartoon lore with a modern twist that contributes to The Peanuts Movie being a heart-warming, gentle film that will play to audiences young and old. Anyone shocked by the idea that Blue Sky (The company behind The Peanuts Movie) would do a tremendous job adapting the original material must have forgotten how well they handled Horton Hears A Who. Blue Sky certainly adapts material from a position of authenticity and respect.

The story centers on a very familiar set of events: Charlie Brown is still the loveable loser in his group of friends, and he immediately becomes fixated on talking to the new girl on his street, “The Little Red-Haired Girl,” and the story builds from there. Anyone who is a lifelong fan of the Peanuts comic-strip is going to love this movie. Bryan Schulz, Craig Schulz, and Cornelius Uliano created a script that appeals to multiple generations of Peanuts fans. Yes, Snoopy will battle the Red Baron, Sally Brown will profess her love for her Sweet Baboo (Linus), Peppermint Patty, and Marcy will play their familiar roles, and of course Lucy is holding the football out because Charlie Brown is determined to kick that ball just this once! The Peanuts Movie is a trip down memory lane of all those loveable moments that make Peanuts such a beloved comic-strip.

Animation fans will find it interesting that Blue Sky choose to design the Peanuts’ characters via 3D CGI, but then took a very old-school approach and drew the faces on their heads. It was as if the faces were penciled in the same way we have seen them in the comics for years. It was a charming decision that ended up tying in the new animation technology with the authenticity of the long-standing comic strip. This simple choice created the characters we already knew and adored from our childhood.

The Peanuts Movie has endured its fair share of criticism, but maybe some have forgotten what makes The Peanuts the Charles Schulz classic. Forbes contributor Scott Mendelson is a perfect example of a person who didn’t like the film simply because it was a Peanuts film. Have we forgotten what it was like to be a kid? Peanuts is about the everyday life of a loveable loser (Charlie Brown) and his never ending quest to finally be a winner in life. If ever a plot was not only relatable to the general audience and still was authentic to the history of the Peanuts comic strip it’s the story involving “The Little Red-Haired Girl.” The film doesn’t try to be more than it should be, which is a good thing, we’ve suffered enough thanks to The Smurfs 1 and 2. The Peanuts Movie is not about whether some bearded curmudgeon (I think I just described myself) is entertained, it’s about the families and the kids that get inspired. Growing up is one awkward moment after another and Charlie Brown understands. On a personal note, going to see The Peanuts Movie would be the last thing on my mind. However as a father, I will be taking my family to see this film because my son Charlie will be delighted for 88 minutes and that’s about as good as endorsements get.

Epic ‘Metroid’ Short Film Starring Jessica Chobot

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Two years ago Rainfall Films gave fans a two-and-half minute Wonder Woman short film that destroyed the internet to the tune of 5,559,528 views. Monday afternoon the studio released a live action short set in the Metroid universe, directed by Sam Balcomb and starring Jessica Chobot (Nerdist) and America Young (Halo 5).

The classic Nintendo franchise, Metroid, envisioned through the lens of 60s-70s science fiction cinema such as 2001, Alien, and Solaris: this was the concept for Rainfall’s most recent production. Instead of using a modern approach, a style was developed more in tune with the themes that inspired the first Metroid game in 1986: isolation, exploration, and the wonders of deep space.

NEO-NOIRVEMBER: Sidney Lumet’s Brilliant Swan Song, ‘Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In this world of over-labeling, November now has the moniker “Noirvember,” signifying a month to celebrate the film noir subgenre. At least, for a few of us cinephiles out there it has this label. I figured, why not fall in line and celebrate a few Neo-Noir films, some fresh new classics that reshape the noir tropes through modern filming techniques and, sometimes, a wink and a nod to the world in which they came?

The great Sidney Lumet was 82 when he directed his final film, 2007’s electric and often overlooked thriller Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. He was 82 when he told this tale with a youthful, energetic approach behind the camera, a tale of deception and murder and drugs and violence. It’s hard to imagine a director half his age delivering such a wrecking ball of a picture, but here was the master himself, in his final years, creating one final masterpiece.

Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead sinks its teeth into you, it crawls under your skin. It thrills you, shocks you, and cuts into your soul. It is the story of two brothers, whose only shared characteristic is desperation. We first meet Andy (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a slick-haired and prideful Manhattan payroll manager on vacation with his wife, Gina (Marisa Tomei, more stunningly beautiful with every passing year). The two are in South America and, despite the graphic sex scene that opens their story, all is not well. There are troubles hidden beneath the seemingly idyllic lovers. Back home, Andy has a serious drug problem that sends him to a high rise where his dealer shoots him up and has to listen to his life musings. His addiction, and the constant dipping into the company till have built a mountain of money issues and impending audit problems at work. Things are unraveling for Andy.

Before the Devil

Hank, played by Ethan Hawke, is Andy’s less-successful, more aloof brother. He has an ex-wife (Amy Ryan) who hates him and demands child support, and a daughter who gives him chances upon chances to come through for her. Hank also happens to be sleeping with Gina on the side. The fact Hoffman and Hawke play brothers, sharing almost no discernible physical traits, speaks to the heart of the film. These brothers could not be any different, were it not for the money problems they both have for varying reasons.

Andy has a plan to fix their problems. It’s a simple robbery, a jewelry store in suburbia, away from Manhattan. He knows all the angles, because he and Hank have a connection to this jewelry store: it’s their parent’s store. Andy can’t conduct the robbery himself, he’d be recognized almost immediately, so he enlists simpleton Hank to pull off the heist one morning when he knows it will be quick and easy. Surely nothing will go wrong here.

Only things do go horribly wrong in incredibly shocking ways, thanks to Hank bringing in a third party (Brian F. O’Byrne) who is more incompetent than Hank.  There is a murder, and everything begins to fall apart. Lumet frames the story with storylines that jump back and forth in time, to days before the murder, the day of the murder, and the aftermath. The structure may be superfluous in the hands of a lesser filmmaker, but Lumet ensures the cuts are all carefully placed and they create a fractured sense of time, adding to the frantic desperation of this Greek tragedy’s players. Albert Finney plays the brother’s father, Charles, a man with his own burning desire to find the truth behind the tragedy.

Before the Devil

All the actors are at the top of their game. Hoffman oozes an unseemly deception, backloaded with paternal disapproval from Charles. Andy’s need for his father’s approval never finds the right place in his life, and is masked with heroin and diverted by his own pride. As Hank, Hawke toes the line between lovable loser and helpless idiot in one of his finest performances in a career loaded with fine performances. Hank’s romance with Gina is especially fascinating, serving as a way of getting the better of his brother who most certainly outsmarted him their entire life. He may very well care for Gina, a sad and aimless person in her own life, but make no mistake, his motivations run deeper than lust.

The screenplay from Kelly Masterson (who also wrote Snowpiercer, of all things) balances these plates in the air with perfect depth and attention to nuance, and what is not said in between the lines. The hard-boiled elements of the picture build to an incredible crescendo, and then release with a cathartic moment of pain and justice. Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead would find itself on the top mantle of many filmmakers careers. Here, for Lumet, it is a quiet little masterwork, tucked into the B-sides of his crime classics like Serpico and Dog Day Afternoon. Make no mistake about it though, it’s as good as his early classics, and the ferocity with which he lights every scene is the work of a youthful soul in a master filmmaker’s aging exterior.

Twitter Replaces ‘Favorite’ With ‘Like’ ❤️

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Twitter Tuesday morning replace your favorite star with a like heart. The favorite was a random function of social network that didn’t help your content go viral but did act like a receipt of viewership.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has been busy lately promoting the social media platform during the World Series and adding new features for the casual users. Twitter Moments is still a like clunky, but it’s a start to help users find relevant content.

The new ‘polls’ feature will be great for marketing and research. The only drawback is that the poll only lasts for 24 hours.

The company has also added a bit of fun to platform for the users. I was pleasantly surprised when I got balloons from Twitter for my birthday.
