‘Regular Show’ Creators Talk ‘Regular Show: The Movie’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

While at New York Comic Con 2015, creators of Cartoon Networks hit cartoon Regular Show, JG Quintel and Sean Szeles, as well as voice actors William Salyers and Sam Marin, plus art director Paula Spence, sat down for the Cartoon Network press block for a roundtable style interview, to talk about the show’s upcoming season but, specially their newly released filmed.

Quintel stated the idea behind a Regular Show: The Movie:

“We’ve done a lot of things on the show that are movie level epic in eleven minutes and it was really hard once we decided to make a movie, what’s worth making a movie. And one concept we had never explored was them not being friends [Mordecai and Rigby]. Like their friendship is the core of the show and so to break that up, which is what the movie deals with, is like the danger that their friendship could dissolve is like really intense.”

Regular Show: The Movie is canon, which Quintel addresses and happens shortly after season six, with season seven starting right after. Currently, Regular Show is still in season seven, with a recently released Halloween special, Terror Tales of the Park 5, then a seasonal special related to winter, on the horizon as well. With the season seven finale being a half hour special around December and season eight starting sometime in 2016.

Another aspect that Quintel and Szeles touch on, was the process of their writers room and how they’ve come up with ideas for episodes, which generally reflect some kind of 80s theme or trope. Quintel said:

“We have methods for coming up with stuff. I mean, in our writer’s room, we play a game, it’s like a title game. Where you put a title to an episode, everybody puts a couple into a hat and then you draw the title out and for two minutes type an episode and then another one, another one, another one. Then in an hour you have like 150 episode ideas, which are all bad,”

With Szeles chiming in to say:

“All terrible,”

before Quintel concluded saying:

“But you find some gems in there and you talk about those gems and be like oh, this could definitely be an episode with Mordecai and Rigby or this could be a Skips episode, And we keep playing the game and finding those episodes that makes us excited. And we definitely have to throw away a lot more now, because it’s like nah, we already did that, we already did that episode. So, it’s harder the longer we go, but I don’t think we’ll ever run out of ideas.”

Regular Show

For those that don’t know, a lot of the Regular Show is based off of JG Quintel’s and Sam Marin’s (the voice of Pops, Benson and Muscle Man) time in college, especially the catch phrases like “ohhhhhhh” or “hmmph hmmph” which came from friends and playing video games. Paula Spence, actually goes into depth about how a lot of the artwork within the show, actually reflects this, stating:

“I think a lot of the show is based on JG experiences. I mean the first season was all about, with my artists, my art team it would be like hey I need a pickup truck and then our prop designer drew it and JG goes, oh no it needs to be a Ford F150 or you know whatever, cause that’s what my dad had it. I was like aww, you need to tell me this stuff. And then finally I decided we’ll just ask him, every time there’s a car,”

With William Saylers (voice of Rigby) jumping in to say:

“Cause he’s thinking of something specific.”

Spence continued:

“Yeah yeah, his own experiences. He worked in a movie theatre and going to school with Sam and a lot of it is based off JG. People come in with the ‘I’m Eggscellent Hat’ and they’re so excited, I’m like you know JG lived through that. And they’re like what!”

Terry Crews Would Like To See ‘The Rock’ As The Villain In ‘Expendables 4’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Actor and former NFL player, Terry Crews, called in to talk his hosting duties for the second season of World’s Funniest on Fox. The season premiere is November 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Crews, the always positive personality, is very excited to make America laugh on the television. However, the busy entertainer has one eye on the big screen. There have been rumors of Hulk Hogan as the villain for Expendables 4, but the action star would like to raise the stakes by casting Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as the big bad guy in the next installment in the Expendables franchise.

You know it’s funny I’m looking at who did the most crimes. Who’s really messed up. I think Hulk Hogan makes a good case. He could really come in and be a bad guy. On the end of the spectrum my man ‘The Rock.’ I think Dwayne Johnson would be a killer villain,” said Crews.

Has Garret Dillahunt Been Cast As Negan or Dwight For ‘The Walking Dead’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Garret Dillahunt posted that he was reading The Walking Dead Compendium Three, which covers the introduction of the villain Negan. This tweet is a loose connection to say he’s been cast as Negan. What we do know is showrunner Scott M. Gimple, John Carroll Lynch, and Alanna Masterson began following Dillahunt on Twitter. The following on Twitter could mean Dillahunt had conversations with the folks at AMC’s The Walking Dead, or they travel in the same circles.

If you’ve seen Dillahunt in Deadwood you know, he is capable of pulling off the character of Negan. A major character during the Negan era is Dwight.

••••••••••••SPOILERS FROM THE COMIC••••••••••••

Dwight is a main character first introduced in Issue 98 of Image Comics’ The Walking Dead and is a member of the Saviors who has a half burnt face due to Negan, the leader of the Saviors.

Jon Hamm and Kevin Durand were rumored to be the front-runners to play Negan. Who do you want in the role?

Dillahunt’s latest Instagram post might prove that he has a role on the show. We are just not sure who.

Closer. Bloody crew cut in the woods. Who do I look like? #makemycase #lobbying #demandit

Spike Lee goes Greek with new CHI-RAQ trailer

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Spike Lee is one of our most important filmmakers. Even when his finger isn’t quite on the pulse of his subject (Miracle at St. Anna), he has a distinct voice that is able to cut right to the heart of the social and racial issues.

Lee’s latest is Chi-Raq, a modern adaptation of the Greek comedy Lysistrata. In the original play, the women of Greece band together to withhold sex from their husbands in order to leverage peace during the Peloponnesian War.

The title comes from local Chicago slang that compares the city’s death rate to that of American soldiers in Iraq.

In other words, some pretty light stuff. Check out the trailer below:

I dig that trailer a lot. Lee’s sensibilities work very well with the Greek theatricality at hand (Sam Jackson working as Greek chorus is the job he was born to do). The musical aspects smashing up against the ornate modernity of it all make the film visually arresting, with the dialogue at least partially inspired by the source play.

It looks like Lee isn’t pulling any punches and nor should he when it comes to dealing with the violence permeating the city of Chicago. We’ll see how this all comes together when the movie is released as Amazon Studios first original feature in theaters and on demand on December 4th.

Review: ‘Spectre’ Bond has a licence to bore you

Monkeys Fighting Robots

At the Spectre screening, I had the pleasure of sitting next to Mr. and Mrs. James Bond Super Fan (names were changed to protect the innocent) and I felt that you would be hard pressed to find two people who were more excited about this movie than this couple. “I am just tingling with excitement,” explained Mrs. James Bond Super Fan. “This movie is going to kick so much ass!” Mr. James Bond Fan added “You know, that this film is based on one of the actual James Bond Novels.”  So I turned to both of them and asked was there any scenario where this movie wouldn’t live up to your titanic expectations? Mr. James Bond fan turned towards me and stated “maybe if they decided to animate this Bond Movie” he said with a chuckle.

So as I sat ready to be blown away by Spectre , I couldn’t help but wonder if James Bond had gone from bulletproof cars to review bulletproof films. Does it even matter what I have to say about this film? Have we reached that point where Bond will just draw people to the movies? Needless to say, as we left the theater, Mr. and Mrs. James Bond Fan were gushing about the movie and a feeling astonishment overcame me. What movie did they see that excited them so? Was I in the wrong theater? The Spectre I saw took the proven formula of a good Bond film (Fast Cars, Ample Sex Appeal, Cool Gadgets, explosions) and decided to go with a new formula of “More Story and More Boredom” that we all just love to experience when we pay to go to the movies.

What was confounding about Spectre is that it’s not like Daniel Craig can’t do wonderful work in the role of 007; he certainly showed that in Casino Royale and Skyfall. However, in Spectre he’s presides impassively in 150 minutes of pure mediocrity. It’s like Craig and the rest of the cast felt it was necessary to do another Bond film, and they were fulfilling an obligation to Sony.

Spectre opens with the obligatory standalone action set piece, a boring opening chase in Mexico, highlighted by a battle in a helicopter in which Daniel Craig’s stuntman was so evident he might as well have been wearing a neon sign. Spectre trudges towards dullsville when we are treated to boring escapes, a dull bureaucrat, a dull psychopath complete with a dull henchman, and a dull love interest who’s 20 years younger than Bond. To top it all off we have a snoozefest of a torture scene where the guy is petting – wait for it – a Persian Cat! Mr. and Mrs. James Bond Super Fan informed me that all Bond Fans will know what that truly means.

Christoph Waltz plays the villain (Which I won’t name because that’s a surprise), and is grossly underused in Spectre. Why are you going to bring on two-time Academy Award Winner to the project and allow him to have less that a significant role in Spectre? Are you really getting the most of Mr. Waltz by having him “lurk” in the shadows and speak softly? To top it all off, the reasoning behind his malevolence is so absurd that it’s laughable. It ties up all of Craig’s Bond Films with an explanation that no one was ready for and, frankly, nobody needs.

While this was transpiring we also were treated to this gem:

Bond Girl – You Shouldn’t stare.

Bond – You shouldn’t look like that. (Bearded Curmudgeon Face Palm)

Where is the fun? Where is the excitement? Where is the Bond that we all grew up watching? James Bond films should be entertaining , exciting, and full of Eye Candy. Spectre is dull, lifeless, and full of eye sores. Craig doesn’t come across as James Bond in this film, but he does come across as a man who wishes he could quit his job. I guess Sam Smith was right when he was singing “ Writing’s on the Wall.”

Review: Sakurako-san Episode 5 – Still Just Decent

Monkeys Fighting Robots

This episode of Sakurako-san wasn’t as good as the previous, but it’s still better than the three before it.

Sakurako-san Episode 5 Spoilers

Turns out that build up from the previous episode had more long-term effects than I was willing to give it. It was my biggest fear that this episode would the worst yet, because it would only explain the mystery set up before, but it was surprisingly… decent.

We still got our Bone Parade segment (speaking of which, we didn’t have one last week. Yay!), and we got the bogus explainey bits from Sakurako, but after five minutes of it the show moved on! It was nice, there was cake, Takeshi was about to quit smoking, all was happy. Until Takeshi tried to commit suicide (shock!) seriously, I figured that out long ago, and unlike Sakurako I didn’t need a dog to do it. Does that mean I deserve my own mystery-show based on a terribly written light novel? I’m waiting producers! Seriously though, the slow pace has certainly helped Sakurako-san more than it hurt but the mysteries need to be a bit more… mysterious to work.

On the bright-side, Sakurako adopted the dog, so that’s something. Also a villain-type character has just been set up. A rivalry between bone-addict Sakurako and evil-painter … uh? He doesn’t have a name yet so… let’s just call him Painter-Boy. So I’m pretty sure Painter-Boy will show up soon, he was even the topic of discussion in an after credits scene, so that’s nice. But honestly, is Painter-Boy’s involvement means more multi-part arcs I am very willing to let him stay. It’s thanks to him these episodes have been watchable, something Sakurako-san couldn’t do before.

Sakurako-san Episode 5 Body 1
Oh Sakurako-san, at least you’re still gorgeous

I’ve been pretty harsh on this episode and show over all, but this episode did some great things. It overcame what could have easily become the worst episode yet, and it set up something that might mean it stays at this level of quality. If the show stays this tolerable I won’t actively try to avoid it (why do you think last weeks was late?), and that makes my job easier. So thank you, Sakurako-san, keep it up! Or I’ll be severely disappointed…
