Review: The 100 ‘Demons’ – Because Why Not?

Monkeys Fighting Robots

At this point in season 3 of The 100 I’m simply numb. In a season that has been plagued and marred with behind the scenes issues, actors leaving for greener pastures and a widened budget and scope, The 100 has stumbled into its final stretch. Excellent episodes like ‘Ye Who Enter Here’ and ‘Nevermore’ have become increasingly sporadic as the show must finally reconcile the mouthful it has chewed from the plot-corpse.

In what could have been another claustrophobic and taut horror-thriller like ‘Nevermore’, ‘Demons’ fails by trying to be overtly more horrific and widens its lens in order to encapsulate the power dynamic still quaking in Polis. If ‘Demons’ had focused solely on the crew at Arkadia dealing with an old enemy, it could have been a suspenseful entry that still would have to deal with feeling stale.

SPOILERS AND STUFF

We pick up the episode with Miller telling Harper and Bryan (who isn’t cool enough to even have a last name) a ghost story which ends as any other horror movie featuring kids telling ghost stories might. As it began I thought, “If this show actually kills off these three useless ‘leads’, then we might be going somewhere.” Lo and behold, The 100 isn’t that gutsy or sick and instead treats us to a tale of revenge devoid of all suspense.

Emerson, the lone survivor of Mt. Weather has finally come to exact his revenge on Clarke for her genocidal act. The structural pacing of this season’s characters and events can’t have been easy given the necessities the show had to take in certain exits but I’m sick of giving the show an out because of that reason. None of it makes any structural sense. Emerson is a character who should’ve died 10 episodes ago or three years from now. His return marks a point in the season where it’s clear the writers are just trying to wipe the slate clean with what they’ve laid thus far. And it’s a shame because Emerson truly does represent some interesting thematic territory. If only it had been handled with some grace and sense.

His plot, involving kidnapping everyone Clarke cares for and forcing her to watch them die is intriguing on a surface level, but completely devoid of drama or tension in execution. When Emerson chains up Bellamy, Octavia, Jasper, Monty, Miller, Harper and Bryan and leaves them to suffocate in the airlock as he places a chokehold on Clarke, I just wait until the moment she can break free and save them. This isn’t the show that kills off seven leads in one fell swoop; not at this point in the season and not in the way that it’s handled here. Even in the “surprise” deaths the show has deftly given us, those resonate thematically and can be seen as consistent with the arc of the season after the fact. Here, we have been through giving a damn about Emerson a full year ago and are just waiting for him to reach his inevitable end. If the episode had picked a different entry point, one not so focused on the “will they or won’t they die” aspect, there could’ve been a greater tension at hand.

It’s like the Marvel movies. It isn’t who lives and dies, it’s who has to sacrifice their values in order to achieve their goals.

I truly like most of the people who frequently inhabit the world of this show. Compromise their characters. Show me their weaknesses. Give me their strengths. Don’t pander to me because you want to play in a horror sandbox where you kill off the character who may as well have been asking for sweet release this entire season.

RIP Sinclair. Whatever.

Elsewhere, Murphy stumbles upon his former and true flame, Emori, in Polis and divulges all his nasty secrets to her. Surprise(!) when she comes out as having taken the A.L.I.E. pill and spills the beans to Ontari. It’s a shame we don’t know Ontari more because if we did, we might have gotten some tension from the moment when she’s on the take-the-pill-or-don’t-take-the-pill cliffhanger.

Of course she’s going to take the pill. Now A.L.I.E. sits on the throne of Polis with Jaha and Ontari at her side.

If I sound a little angry at the show it’s because deep down I know it’s capable of so much more. Just last week we were treated with an episode that knew how to manipulate its characters enough that it manipulated its audience. None of that nuance is present here which has, unfortunately, become the norm.

Nintendo NX 2017 Release, Nintendo Wii U 2018 Ending, and The New Era of Nintendo Mobile Apps

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Breaking news for Nintendo fans everywhere as the Nintendo NX has officially been confirmed to release March 2017. With the project being pretty kept under the wraps, Tatsumi Kimishima ensures us in a previous Time Magazine interview that the Nintendo NX will be a completely new experience, departing from the Wii and Wii U experience to further appeal to the consumer.

Nintendo-tatsumi-kimishima

From today’s latest updates from Nintendo financial briefing, Nintendo CEO Tatsumi Kimishima announces:

“As we report the results of the last fiscal year, we also look forward to an exciting period ahead with further growth in our mobile business, new products for our dedicated video game systems and continued progress in our efforts to increase the number of consumers experiencing our IP through games, licensing and expanded entertainment.”

So what does this mean for the consumer? A handful of changes will take effect within the next year.

Wii U

As mentioned the Nintendo NX will be releasing next March 2017, and as predicted Wii U will be seeing its end by March 2018. For whatever reason, the Wii U just didn’t do as well as its Wii predecessor and started to cause Nintendo to steadily lose money within the process. Whether it’s the lack of graphics the PS4, and XBOX ONE effortlessly possess or the lack of trending titles this generation craves, sales have increasingly fallen behind the two competitors. According to an interview with BBC, Pier Harding-Rolls (head of games research at IHS):

“When the Wii U launched no-one really understood what it was. The two-screen experience wasn’t communicated well, so whatever they are bringing to market this time has to be unique and communicated clearly.”

Which is semi-hard for me to understand as it literally had touch screen components and pretty easy to use controller buttons but hey if your idea of gaming is playing mobile apps like Angry Birds or Words with Friends while sitting in bed, I guess I could understand.

With that being said, Nintendo 3DS has seemingly fallen victim to the decrease in sales with the constant rise of mobile app trends. However with the recent release of the Miitomo mobile app last month, it has already gained over 10 million users across the network. Although it is a free app primarily aimed at connecting you with friends, family, and other users, it does implement the popular gaming trends of paying extra for add-ons such as clothing articles but through Nintendo’s coin system. In an interview with TIME magazine this past December, Kiminishima expressed the importance of synchronizing Nintendo accounts across all platforms including Nintendo devices, PC and mobile apps.

“We’re looking at really strengthening the connections between My Nintendo and the Nintendo Account system, as well as—and this is I think probably our number one overall goal—connecting all of our Nintendo IP within this framework and allowing our customer base to have access to our IP via this, and gain benefits from that access and that connection. I think that will be something that no other company has to offer.”

Although all these new ideas are beginning to set into stone, we must take a step back and sort look at the most important aspect which are the game releases.

The Wii U will still be releasing a ton of games before its makes way to its departure. The Nintendo Wii U literally just released Star Fox Zero less than a week ago, along with some other fan favorites set to release this summer such as Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, and Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In addition the Wii U will still be reviving some older franchises that are TBA with Harvest Moon: Seeds of Memories, Pokémon Snap, and Contra Advance: The Alien Wars EX. (Click here for IGNs full Wii U game release list.)

The Legend of Zelda has been pushed back from its initial 2016 release for the Wii U, as it will make cross platform appearance in 2017 on the Nintendo NX. (Much like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess did with Nintendo GameCube and Nintendo Wii’s release in 2006.)  Aside from widespread rumors of a Super Smash Bros release, the information of potential game releases are incredibly short as IGN only has speculation of possible Dragon Quest 10, Dragon Quest 11, and Mech Super Extended on their list. Although we will only be able to see Wii U gameplay, The Legend of Zelda will be Nintendo’s prime focus at this summer’s E3 Gaming Convention, further hinting at the possibility of being Nintendo NX’s debut title.

The Nintendo 3DS will still release the highly anticipated Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon by the end of the 2016 year as well as Metroid Prime: Federation Force, and Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice. (See the full IGN list here)

Nintendo will also continue to push their mobile app games with Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem currently in the works, which according to BBC will be released by fall 2016.

Robert Downey Jr. Has One More Solo ‘Iron Man’ Film in Him

Monkeys Fighting Robots

With Disney in full synergy mode, ‘ABC Nightline’ put together a nice news package covering ‘Captain America: Civil War.’

The clip contained two very interesting nuggets of information and a ton of new footage.

The first nugget, Scarlett Johansson makes a quick mention that neither Black Widow or Hawkeye have a solo adventure in the works. With the backlash from the ‘Ghost in the Shell’, you can bet Johansson would rather be filming a Black Widow feature film.

The second nugget, and probably the biggest news to come out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a while, Robert Downey Jr. told ‘Nightline’ he has one more solo Iron Man film in him.

“I feel like I could do one more,” said Downey Jr.

You can’t see Marvel Studios not making this film. The Iron Man franchise has earned $2.4 billion.

What villain do you want to see Tony Stark fight in ‘Iron Man 4’?

UPDATE: On the Facebook comment threads, fans overwhelmingly want to see the Mandarin done properly on the big screen.

(h/t ComicBook.com)

Captain America: Civil War is directed by Anthony & Joe Russo from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, Captain America: Civil War picks up where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off, as Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

The film stars Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Chadwick Boseman, Emily VanCamp, Daniel Brühl, Frank Grillo, William Hurt, Tom Holland, and Martin Freeman.

Captain America: Civil War is set for release on May 6.

‘Bastille Day’ Review: A Dumb Action-Thriller

Monkeys Fighting Robots

July 14th, 1789 – the date when protesters released seven prisoners from The Bastille, though the French prefer to think about it as the day the people rose up against an oppressive government. Bastille Day also serves as a setting for a silly action-thriller starring Idris Elba.

Michael Mason (Richard Madden) is an American pickpocket living in Paris who ends up becoming the top suspect after stealing a bomb which kills four people. Sean Briar (Idris Elba) is a maverick CIA agent who is transferred to Paris after a mission went wrong in Iraq. Briar is assigned the task to bring Mason in for questioning before the French can, but have to team up when Briar is forced to go rogue as the forces responsible for the attack orchestrate protests and riots across the French capital.

Bastille Day is led by two actors who are touted as potential Bonds – Elba is a leading candidate and Madden could be a good outside bet. Elba has no problem with the action scenes; he is a big imposing figure who has no problem beating people up and Briar’s CIA bosses describe him as reckless and irresponsible, just like a certain MI6 agent. Briar also acts like Jack Bauer, an agent who has to act in a short space of time in a major city and is willing to use threats and violence to extract information while being backed up by people on computers. The scene when Briar questions Mason lets Elba do his best Samuel L. Jackson impression. Despite Briar’s gruff exterior he does have a sardonic wit which helped to lighten the mood.

Richard Madden is fine in his role as a thief with a conscious who gets embroiled in a much bigger event. He has a roguish claim during his early scenes, and he has a trait of smoking a cigarette after a successful job and is shown to be a very resourceful young man. But he is outshone and outmanned when he is on screen with Elba, the Hackney actor having a dominating screen presence and a more fun role then Madden – who had whined about Briar’s method. Madden’s American accent needs a bit of work for future roles.

Bastille Day is the first action movie for British director James Watkins – his previous writing and directing have been in the horror genre. Watkins does a decent enough job – there is a fun chase on the rooftops early on in the movie, and he is able to show Briar and Mason’s observational skills – when Briar is investigating and when Mason he has to come up with quick plans. The fist fights do suffer the cure of a lot of modern action cinema – shaky cam and quick cuts – but it is far from being the worst offender. Bastille Day was edited by Jon Harris, who worked on movies like Kick-Ass and Kingsman: The Secret Service, which made sure the action was fairly comprehensible. The movie being a spy-action thriller set in Paris with Americans characters made Bastille Day seem like a Luc Besson produced EuropaCorp movie, but the Frenchman filmmaker was not involved.

Where Bastille Day falls flat is on the writing. What possibly happened was that the writer was influenced by 24, Die Hard With Vengeance and Goldeneye and then bludgeoned in the head before writing. The plot is exceedingly stupid. What happens in the movie is that a group of rogue police officers planted the bomb so they could turn Paris into a powder-keg of chaos. When it is revealed as to why they are doing this, it just leads to a groan of despair. It is similar to what happened in the British actioner Welcome to the Punch, where it leads to questions about what the masterminds are actually able to gain considering their positions? It is the type of movie where any logic problems have to be ignored.

There was some controversy surrounding the release of the movie because of recent terrorist attacks in Paris. It’s not the film’s fault; it’s just unfortunate timing. The movie tries not to be political – the far-left and far-right are both used by the actual terrorists to riot and protest, and Muslims are made out to be victims of stereotyping. But the movies tries to have its cake and eat it, by being more sympathetic to left-wing activities: they wanted to avoid killing anyone, while showing the right-wing nationalist party used immigrant labor as cleaners. They also want the audience to cheer both the left-wing activities and Briar as he beats and tortures people to get information. The left wing activities are shown to be wearing yellow smiley masks – most likely because the studio could not get the rights to use the V for Vendetta masks.

The way the French authorities are portrayed is similar to 2008’s Taken where they were corrupt or incompetent. French audiences will laugh and go ‘silly Americans’, or be very offended that their police are so hopeless while the Americans are at worst sticklers for the rules. The French tend to be quiet a proud bunch and do not like it when their nation is insulted.

The most egregious aspect is its opening shot of a naked woman walking around in a public place. It was put in the movie for shock value.

Bastille Day is a very standard actioner that has a good cast, but suffers from the stupidity of its own story and screenplay as it tries to emulate Die Hard, 24 and the Bourne series.

Trailer: Joseph Gordon Levitt is Oliver Stone’s ‘Snowden’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The first official trailer for Oliver Stone’s biopic thriller Snowden is here. Aside from Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s strange-sounding voice, the film looks tense from start to finish.

Here’s the trailer:

And here is the synopsis:

SNOWDEN, THE POLITICALLY-CHARGED, PULSE-POUNDING THRILLER STARRING JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT AND SHAILENE WOODLEY, REVEALS THE INCREDIBLE UNTOLD PERSONAL STORY OF EDWARD SNOWDEN, THE POLARIZING FIGURE WHO EXPOSED SHOCKING ILLEGAL SURVEILLANCE ACTIVITIES BY THE NSA AND BECAME ONE OF THE MOST WANTED MEN IN THE WORLD. HE IS CONSIDERED A HERO BY SOME, AND A TRAITOR BY OTHERS. NO MATTER WHICH YOU BELIEVE, THE EPIC STORY OF WHY HE DID IT, WHO HE LEFT BEHIND, AND HOW HE PULLED IT OFF MAKES FOR ONE OF THE MOST COMPELLING FILMS OF THE YEAR.

Oliver Stone has been hit or miss for a long time, with the misses beginning to overwhelm his catalogue. He’s seem to have lost his edge in recent years, with W. and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps lacking the punch of his earlier work. This looks like it could be a return to paranoia-fueled glory for the politically-charged auteur.

Snowden hits theaters September 16.
