Hannibal Buress Confirms ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Role

Monkeys Fighting Robots

While speaking to The Breakfast Club yesterday in an interview, comedian Hannibal Buress confirmed that he will indeed be in Marvel’s upcoming take on the web-slinger revealing the role he plays in the film.

“In Spider-Man, I play a gym teacher,” he said. “I play one of the dumbass characters that don’t realize he’s Spider-Man. [My character thinks] ‘He’s Peter Parker. Oh man, this guy’s really athletic!’”

While it’s a small role, it is  possible that he might be the comedic relief in Peter Parker’s life, when it comes to the scenes that take place in the high school setting.

Buress rose to fame following a joke he did on Bill Cosby going viral and leading to the events that caused the downfall of the comedy legend. A subject he touches on in the interview among many other things. Check out the full interview below:

Spider-Man: Homecoming is directed by Jon Watts and  stars Tom Holland in the title role, with Zendaya (Michelle), Laura Harrier (Liz Allen), Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), Bokeem Woodbine, Tyne Daly, Kenneth Choi, Martin Starr, Donald Glover, Logan Marshall-Green, Hannibal Buress, Selenis Leyva, Michael Mando, Garcelle Beauvais, Abraham Attah, Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Robert Downey Jr (Tony Stark/Iron Man) and Michael Keaton (Adrian Toomes/ Vulture).

The movie is scheduled for release July 7, 2017.

New ‘Doctor Strange’ Featurette Introduces Key Characters

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Captain America: Civil War is now available for digital download, meaning all those great special features have been set free. Among deleted scenes, and a hilarious blooper reel Marvel treated fans with a behind the scenes look at its next movie, Doctor Strange.

The featurette introduces key characters such as Karl Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) and the mysterious villain Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen).

The short clip offers a lot of new information about Mikkelsen’s villainous character. “We’re excited about the villains in this film,” producer Kevin Feige says. “We call them the Zealots. These are people who become seduced by what they find on the other side.”

Doctor Strange is set to introduce a whole new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ve seen hints at magic in previous movies, but the Sorcerer Supreme will bring inter-dimensional travel, teleportation and a whole lot of danger that we’ve never seen before.

Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.

Doctor Strange, directed by Scott Derrickson, opens in theatres on November 4 in the US and an earlier date of October 28 in the UK.

Cinemax Orders Pilot for Show Inspired by Martial Arts Legend Bruce Lee

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Bruce Lee’s notes motivate new series pilot at Cinemax

It’s been over forty years since his passing, and martial arts icon Bruce Lee still affects popular culture. The premium cable heavyweight Cinemax announced their order of a pilot episode for Warrior, labeled as a crime drama set in late-19th century San Francisco. The series is inspired by conceptual notes by Bruce Lee, which were found after his death in 1973. Lee’s daughter Shannon, who handles her late father’s estate and marketing interests, worked with hotshot director Justin Lin to bring the concept to Cinemax. Lin is best known for Fast and the Furious 6, True Detective, and his work with the CBS network hit, Scorpion.

Martial Arts in 19th century America

The story centers around a young martial arts prodigy who settles in San Francisco after leaving China. Soon after arriving, he finds himself embroiled in the Tong Wars of Chinatown – turf wars over prostitution, gambling and drugs.

Jonathan Tropper, co-creator of Cinemax’s signature hit Banshee has come onboard to write Warrior with Lin set to direct. Lin’s experience with gritty dramas and intense action films, should set the bar fairly high for Warrior.

Fans of martial arts movies are sure to find some interest in Warrior, particularly since Bruce Lee’s extensive notes factor in heavily to the concept. Viewers that enjoy dramas such as Ripper Street, Turn or Copper might find the historical premise intriguing.

No showrunner or casting choices have been made, but decisions are expected soon.

With a premise created by the legendary Bruce Lee, and a superstar foundation in Justin Lin and John Tropper, the anticipation for this series is sure to grow.

Lin and Cropper also have the added pressure of the Bruce Lee legacy to handle, but given their track record of success, there is every reason to think that Warrior will be a big hit.

‘Stranger Things’ 2 Teaser Trailer Released Online

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Stranger Things, the Netflix phenomenon that took the world by surprise, has been renewed for a second season, and we now have the teaser trailer to prove it!

Tweeted this morning, the teaser supplies very little information other than that the second season will take place in the Fall of 1984 (the first season took place in 1983).

The video also features nine seemingly random words and phrases. It’s been announced that Stranger Things 2 will have nine episodes instead of season one’s eight, so it’s possible that the phrases are episode titles.

They are as follows:

          MADMAX
THE BOY WHO CAME BACK TO LIFE
          THE PUMPKIN PATCH
          THE PALACE
          THE STORM
          THE POLLYWOG
          THE SECRET CABIN
          THE BRAIN
          THE LOST BROTHER

What do you think the phrases mean? What do you hope to see in the sequel season? Let us know in the comments below!

‘Supernatural’ Season 12: First Images Reveal A Tortured Sam

Monkeys Fighting Robots

TV Line has revealed a bunch of new images from the Supernatural season 12 premiere. The Winchester brothers have a lot to deal with when Supernatural returns to The CW. The hit series is heading into season 12 and fans have a lot to look forward to.

At the end of season 11, the Darkness resurrected Mary Winchester as a gift for Dean. The long dead character will need to adjust to a modern world while getting to know her adult sons. If you’re expecting Mary to take a backseat when it comes to hunting, I think you’ll be surprised. The newly released images give us a look at the character as she jumps back into the world of hunting, and sets out to rescue her youngest son.

Supernatural - Mary

Meanwhile, Sammy isn’t having the best of luck. An English chapter of the Men of Letters have captured the youngest Winchester and are testing out a pretty nasty blowtorch. I wouldn’t worry Sam, Dean is on the way and he’s bringing mommy.

Supernatural season 12 is set to be a smaller and more personal chapter in the Winchester story. After a season battling with God, Lucifer, and literal Darkness the brothers have their mother back, and the Men of Letters to deal with. The dynamic between Sam and Dean will never be the same but as always something will stand in the way of their happiness.

Supernatural returns to The CW on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 9/8c.

Five Favorite Films From The Year I Was Born: 1979

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In 1979, America was at a tipping point. Disco was pretty much dead, Michael Jackson had just began his solo career and cinema had taken a more mature and darker turn. Just before the Go Go 1980’s, movies had redemption, terror in outer space, and a journey into the heart of darkness.

Rocky II

Rocky 2

In Rocky, the Italian Stallion won the battle, but not on the scorecard. With Adrian pregnant, Rocky Balboa knows that fighting is the only way he can support his new family. Apollo Creed, fueled by a mountain of critics who claim Balboa would have beat him if he had one more round demands another fight with Balboa. Proving to be as good as its predecessor, Balboa once again defies the odds, defeats Apollo Creed, and becomes champion.

The Warriors

“CAN YOU DIG IT?!?” rings out across Van Cortlandt Park. All of NYC’s premiere street gangs are in attendance to listen to Cyrus and his grand plan. A plan to unite all the gangs under Cyrus and the Gramercy Riffs to take over the city. One gunshot later, Cyrus is dead, his ambitious plan along with it, and The Warriors, who have journeyed from Coney Island stand accused of his murder. Fighting through the Baseball Furies, the Turnbull ACs, and a host of others to make it home. The Warriors failed commercially but has become a classic to legions of film fans.

Mad Max

Society is collapsing and the world is introduced to Max Rockatansky. Directed by George Miller, Mad Max didn’t invent the post apocalyptic genre, but it damn near perfected it. Banned in New Zealand and Sweden during its initial theatrical run, the movie has built a legacy that endures to this day. Spawning 3 sequels, the most recent being 2015’s critical hit Mad Max: Fury Road.

Alien

Alien - Films of 1979
Alien – 20th Century Fox

While not as grand in scope as Star Wars or Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, Alien takes a different look at outer space…and it is terrifying. Ridley Scott’s ‘haunted house in outer space’ is a cultural touchstone. Tight spaces inside the Nostromo, H. R. Giger’s creature design, and a great score craft a new type of horror movie while also redefining science fiction.

Apocalypse Now

1979 - Apocalypse Now
He really does enjoy the smell of napalm in the morning

Coppola’s magnum opus shows not just the darkness of war, but also human nature. Considered one of the definitive films about the Vietnam War, Capt. Ben Willard’s (Martin Sheen) journey to “terminate the command” of Colonel Kurtz is surreal, analytical, and compelling.

Trailer for Archie adaptation “Riverdale” Now Available

Monkeys Fighting Robots

After a two month embargo, the first trailer for the new drama Riverdale is finally available online. Before I dive into a full deconstruction of the minute thirty of pure bliss that is this trailer, I’m going to be honest: I have been head over heels for Archie since I was nine years old.

Archie All Grown Up

As I have gotten older, so has Archie and the gang.archie and betty The new Archie book series steps things up a bit with emotions directly addressed rather than flatly ignored. Jughead came out as asexual in his own reboot this summer. Just last month, we saw Betty and Veronica butt heads like they’ve never done before. But the darkest version of the series to date is the upcoming Riverdale on the CW. The new TV series kicks off with a death in sleepy, suburban Riverdale.

What Makes Riverdale so dark?

The series begins when Jason Blossom, twin brother of all around horrible Cheryl, dies under mysterious circumstances. Of course Cheryl had something to do with it, Cheryl is the worst. Then there’s Veronica, who has been coming between Betty and Archie for literal decades (yes, I’m team Betty and I want it written on my gravestone). In the new series, Veronica is new in town, and her new “friendship” with Betty is threatened when she meets the surprisingly muscled version of the show’s lead character. Actually, lets be fair about the subject: Betty, Veronica, and Archie have been in a love triangle with more knots in it than a boy scout camp since the very beginning. Only now are creators starting to recognize that the triangle might include some Betty/Veronica action as well.

While the trailer isn’t available to embed, I’ll share some of the most telling (or confusing) screengrabs below. You may want to watch it yourself, however, in which case, here is the link.

Riverdale – Internaional Upfront Pilot Trailer from Michael Quinn on Vimeo.

Question one: What are the Blossom twins doing in weird matching outfits?

Look, no judgement or anything (yes judgement) but aren’t twins supposed to stop dressing alike when they learn to walk? What is WITH you guys. I bet this was Cheryl’s idea. Look how weird she is, with her weird lace gloves. Bye, Cheryl.

Blossom Twins Riverdale

Question Two: Why is Ms. Grundy reverse Lolita-ing Archie?

The first time through, before I remembered there’s a weird student/teacher relationship between Archie and Grundie in Riverdale, I thought this had to be either Betty or Veronica. She’s got the signature milkshake with extended straw situation going on. Both Betty and Veronica are known for great sunglasses. It is not. It is Ms. Grundy, who has certainly been drinking the same water as Aunt May lately. I don’t know, this is the only plot line I’m just uninterested in learning more about.Grundy Riverdale

Question Three: Who is checking their phone at a time like this?

So the trailer gives us a good shot of Veronica and Archie making out in a coat closet, probably at the same dance where he’s seen entering with Ronnie on one arm and Betty on the other. Which begs a few questions about the coat check scene. First of all, where’s good old Betts? And if he and Betty are just friends, as some of the reviews are insinuating, then why does she want to be part of a power couple, and why shouldn’t he make out with Veronica? Finally, if this is a scandalous few minutes in heaven, why is there a distinctly blue glow on both their faces? The make-out can’t be that good if they’re checking their instagram accounts. Maybe it’s an interrupting “ding” of the messenger app. Betty wants to know where her date went–the real mystery is which one of them she’s talking about.

Veronica Riverdale

Question Four: Is Jughead this show’s moral compass, or just a disappointed bystander?

Everyone loves Jughead. That’s probably why the trailer is being so stingy with him. There are a few questions begging to be asked about him, though, not the least of which being where exactly he falls in all this mess. Maybe Jughead just watches it all from on high (I’m hoping). Maybe he only descends from his throne to impart wisdom and deliver finishing blows, a la Silent Bob in Chasing Amy. Maybe he’s just in it for the cheeseburger. Or maybe looks really can kill, and this glare was Jason’s actual cause of death. Whatever it is, I would probably trust Cole Sprouse with my life.Jughead Riverdale

Question Five: Are you team Betty or are you Team Betty?

Honestly. Look how perfect she is. I hope she isn’t played off as some naive child though. The new books have given her some serious claws, and if that doesn’t translate to the screen, Berlanti and I are going to have some words.

Betty riverdale
I am leaving this picture full size and you can not stop me.

Needless to say, Riverdale is a serious change from anything we’ve ever seen from Archie and his gang. I highly doubt Josie and her Pussycats are playing anything like “Sugar Sugar” at that dance, or ever in their lives.

Based on characters from Archie Comics, Riverdale was created by Greg Berlanti. The show will star KJ Apa (Archie), Lili Reinhart (Betty Cooper), Camila Mendes (Veronica Lodge), and Cole Sprouse (Jughead Jones).

The show is set to premiere on the CW sometime in 2017.

Why We Should Be Excited About A Younger Spider-Man

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Spider-Man hasn’t had a great deal of cinematic success. After two reboots, and five solo movies it looks like we’re finally getting the definitive portrayal of Peter Parker on the big screen. Tom Holland’s short but memorable appearance in Captain America: Civil War  gave new life to the character, and proved that Spidey is in better hands at Marvel. Heading into yet another solo movie, why should we be excited to see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man? I have one simple answer, his age.

Spider-Man

In the previous Spidey movies, we haven’t spent much time with a teenage Peter Parker. Both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire portrayed an older webslinger, and while there are enjoyable aspects of both those versions of Spider-Man, what truly makes the character exciting and more engaging than other characters is his youth. Civil War introduced a naïve Peter Parker, whose youthful energy was present in every line he delivered. It looks like Spider-Man: Homecoming will continue that characterisation, with Peter’s school life being a major theme of the movie. This new Spider-Man franchise has even been compared to the Harry Potter movies, in the sense that we will watch the character grow, and evolve slowly into an adult.

Spider-Man
Spider-Man v Experienced Enemies

The great thing about a younger Spider-Man will be the opportunity to see Peter go up against more experienced enemies. This was the most exciting aspect of Spidey in Civil War. We got the chance to see Peter as a rookie, going up against some of Marvel’s greatest heroes. He even went head to head with Captain America, the most experienced fighter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Spider-Man: Homecoming currently filming in Atlanta, we can look forward to Spidey fighting another older enemy. This time it’s an actual Marvel villain, Vulture.

Spider-Man

Spider-Man v Homework

We’ve never seen Peter balance his superhero life, family life and homework. Peter Parker is a troubled young man, who has to hide his identity from the people closest to him. It’s incredibly exciting that we will be seeing Spidey save lives, while also trying to find a date for Homecoming. It adds a level of realism to the character, and offers something unique to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ve seen billionaires, soldiers and lab experiments. We’ve never see a superhero in high school.

Review: ‘Jem and The Holograms’ #18: Bait And Switch

Monkeys Fighting Robots

THE HOLOGRAMS struggle to come to grips with the emotional ramifications of Silica and their short tour gone wrong, The unsure what recent events mean for their band’s future. Is there even a future for JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS?

Writing

The previous issue promised things were going to change. This issue delivered on these promises, but not in the way many probably would have predicted. There is a definite change which will be affecting the series from here on, but it also employed the use of excellent set up and misdirection for what was actually coming to the group. Writer Kelly Thompson really succeeded in taking the story a totally different way, but still made sure to leave it with plenty of emotion for people to have the proper reaction to the entire things.

What is the big change? You’ll have to go read it for yourself. Though, as a small spoiler, the Stingers do show up again and it appears as if they will be a main part of the next story. The use of these new characters to shake things up will definitely have fans eager to read the next issue.

Jem18_cvrA-MOCKONLY

Artwork

This issue features good character work, which is what makes the issue stand out most visually. Unfortunately, there is lot less holographic effects or pages of the bands performing than there were from previous issues. Jen Bartlet does a great job at the end of showing she can draw a great performance page, but a few more of these in the issue wouldn’t have hurt.

Conclusion

The issue has the perfect setup for change and, with the Stingers coming, things are only going to get worse for the group. This is a fantastic issue which fans will not want to miss out one. Especially as things won’t be the same from here on out.

CW’s The Flash Debuts Images From Flashpoint Storyline

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Season three gets a little crazy on The Flash, where the show will parallel the comics story “Flashpoint”, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Flashpoint DC ComicsFlashpoint on Paper

The story line includes an alternate timeline, “the Reverse Flash”, “Kid Flash”, dead parents coming back to life–all the good stuff. While only Barry’s mom comes back to life in the comics, both his parents are brought back for the small screen counterpart. In the comics, all the cities heroes have gone dark side, with Captain Cold hailed as the laudable “Citizen Cold”. We wonder how Cisco feels about the name change.

Flashpoint on Screen

Thanks to Katie Yu at the CW, we’ve got a whole series of images from the upcoming season of The Flash. Barry is facing friend and foe alike. Now the only question is, where’s Detective West in all this? Is that the trade off for having parents? I feel as though his absence from all promo images is suspicious. Then again, we did get to see him tap dance at Comic Con. Maybe I’m just being greedy.

Greg Berlanti, Geoff Johns, Andrew Kreisberg

Based on DC characters, The Flash was created by executive producers Greg Berlanti (“The Flash,” “Supergirl”), Geoff Johns (“Arrow,” “Robot Chicken”) and Andrew Kreisberg (“The Flash,” “Supergirl”). The show stars Grant Gustin (Barry Allen), Candice Patton (Iris West), Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow) and Carlos Valdes (Cisco Ramon).

The Flash returns Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
