Tom Holland Snaps Photos From ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Set In Queens

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Spider-Man: Homecoming is living up to its name as the cast and crew moved from Atlanta to Queens this week. Since the move, tons of photos surfaced online of Tom Holland both in and out of his Spidey suit.

Spider-Man Comes Home

If New York could wear a t-shirt, it would probably read “I heart Marvel”. The city loves their superheroes and treats them like real royalty, most recently with a real-life statue for Captain America in Brooklyn. But Queens is catching up in the race for Marvel cred, as the Homecoming crew is now filming in the streets and skies there.

With open sets comes greater visibility, and fans are flocking to the area to get their own shots of the Spider-Man cast and crew. Holland has been caught on film in subways, alleys, and right on the streets in Queens. However, he’s doing some photo sharing of his own on his personal instagram.

First night in queens and it feels like home already #spidermanhomecoming

While my personal favorite costume is this fancy pjama set, the photos also show us Holland sans-CGI all suited up (above). This is a nice change from the plentiful stop motion shots, or stunt double pictures we’ve gotten before.

Tom Holland Brings Spider-Man To the Ground

Some folks were worried that Spider-Man was getting too far from his comics roots. Objections were plentiful–he’s too Hollywood, he’s played by actors that are too old etc. But Holland brings the Peter Parker back to Spider-Man, and it shows. Holland looks equally as home in his pithy t-shirts as he does on the red carpet. The fan response since the Queens photos emerged is generally positive, from fans old and new alike.

Based on characters from Marvel comics, Spider-Man: Homecoming is directed by Jon Watts. Homecoming stars Tom Holland (Peter Parker), Robert Downy Jr. (Tony Stark), Zendaya (Michelle???) and Marisa Tomei (Aunt May).

Homecoming‘s current release date is July 7th, 2017.

Viola Davis, Steve McQueen & Gillian Flynn Team Up For ‘Widows’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Viola Davis is all over the place these days. It feels good to say that. How to Get Away with Murder season three premiered on ABC last Thursday, the first trailer for Denzel Washington’s Fences hit the web this morning and now, she’s joining director Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) for his next project, the heist thriller Widows, written by McQueen and Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl). “Say no more, I’m sold,” I can hear you say. I know. Same here. But please, let me continue.

As Variety reports (via Collider), Widows is based on 2002 British mini-series of the same name. It’s centered around four armed bank robbers killed in a failed heist, leaving their widows to finish the job. This is a rather pulpy, commercial and unexpected turn for the Academy Award-winning director, and I couldn’t be happier to see it. The director has remained closely knit to serious character dramas throughout this career, and it’s very exciting to see him stretch his wings and fly a little higher. Plus, he’s a singular talent, so his talents will undoubtably shine no matter what. With Flynn’s voice, it’s certain to have an extra kick as well.

Widows will come nearly four years after McQueen’s last film. Although the director was once set to make the HBO limited series Codes of Conduct, the station backed out and McQueen sadly moved on. It’s a pity, because its exploration of race involved in that piece seemed both timely and massively relevant these days. It also would have been great to see what McQueen could do in the TV medium.

Expect a murderer’s row with this ensemble, though. And yes, that pun was intended. Jennifer Lawrence was also reportedly sought for a part, but scheduling conflicts prevented her from coming onboard. Though it’s unclear who else is considered at this time, we should hear more details soon. Meanwhile, Davis is busy filming How to Get Away with Murder, but she’ll be on hiatus next spring. That’s likely when production begins on this new movie.

Thinking Ahead: Stan Lee Films Next Four Marvel Cameos

Monkeys Fighting Robots

According to Entertainment Weekly, Stan Lee has already filmed cameos for the next four Marvel movies.

So not Fired

Stan Lee is 93 years old. Stan Lee will (probably) not live forever. Stan Lee has also become a staple in Marvel films, ever since his first cameo in 2000’s X-Men. Now, Marvel fans hold their breath during each film, waiting for Lee’s cameo as some random extra with one line. Everyone has a favorite. Everyone is dreading the day that we get a movie without it.

Stan Lee Winter SoldierIn order to stave off the inevitable, Lee filmed four cameos at once recently in Atlanta. Marvel filmed chunks of Civil War in Atlanta, so it’s no surprise that Lee joined the crew and knocked off a few of his cameos while they were there. Kevin Feige explained more:

“We do not shoot random ones. They’re always specific. A couple of months ago in Atlanta, [Lee] flew down and we shot four in one day — for four various projects. They’re all awesome! They’re all totally different. And he was unbelievable. He was on fire. He came in, he sat here, he stood there, he stood in this window, and then he went home.”

Feige announced this unconventional filming schedule at a recent screening of Captain America: Civil War in Los Angeles. The one detail he left out, however, is which movies they filmed the cameos for. While we’re waiting on Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 and Doctor Strange to release later this year, Thor 3: Ragnarok and Spider-Man are still filming. Whether the cameos are for these next for films, or something else entirely is yet to be seen. Lee may have filmed the cameos all at once in order to capitalize on the talent on hand while filming Civil War. While he usually doesn’t interact with anyone (and especially not the stars) during his cameos, there’s a first time for everything.

‘Morris From America’ Is A Charming & Heartwarming Tale Of Adolescence

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Morris From America tells the story of a 13 year old boy (Markees Christmas) whose father (Craig Robinson) moves them to Germany for his job. Young Mo has to adjust to his new life in a strange land, while also dealing with normal adolescent obstacles. It’s a simple premise, but a journey worth following nonetheless.

Morris From America

Coming-of-age stories are nothing new, and Morris hits all of the usual beats. Mo struggles to fit in with his peers, he’s presented with drugs and alcohol, and then there’s the awkward teenage love interest (“there’s always a girl Mo,” as his father tells him). It’s a tried and true formula, but writer/director Chad Hartigan at least tries to put a fresh spin on it to keep the audience interested.

By moving Morris to Germany, Hartigan takes the teen’s isolation to a whole new level. Mo doesn’t just feel like an outsider; he is one. He literally doesn’t speak the same language as those around him. Plus he’s the only black kid in the town, which adds prejudice to his list of problems (when a joint is found near the youth center, Morris is the first one questioned).

Morris From America

But even with the slight twist, the overall story can still feel pretty paint-by-numbers at times. It’s just not compelling to watch Morris get picked on at the youth center, or to see him be strung along by the cute, rebellious older girl. In fact, these are the scenes where I wanted to check out mentally. And I would have if it weren’t for the smaller, more intimate moments that save the film from mediocrity and make it all worthwhile.

Craig Robinson knocks it out of the park as Morris’ dad Curtis, and his chemistry with Markees Christmas couldn’t be better. Their father-son dynamic alone is worth the price of admission, and makes for the most pure and charming scenes of the entire movie. Robinson actually delivers a few powerful solo scenes as well; it’s a pity that there weren’t more of them.

Morris From America

That’s actually the biggest gripe with Morris From America: Hartigan introduces elements with a ton of promise, but doesn’t develop them far enough. Curtis is a single father still dealing with the loss of his wife, but the script barely scratches the surface of this. Robinson could’ve been given a much largest subplot to play with; it would’ve been great based on the handful of dramatic scenes he did have. It’s a small gripe, but one still worth mentioning.

Overall, Morris From America is a good film with a lot of promise. It’s worth watching, especially for Craig Robinson’s performance and his chemistry with newcomer Markees Christmas, but don’t expect it to usurp your current favorite coming-of-age story.

‘Fences’ First Trailer – Denzel Washington And Viola Davis Give It Their All

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Paramount Pictures Tuesday morning, released the first trailer for ‘Fences’ directed by Denzel Washington from a screenplay by August Wilson, adapted from Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play.

Washington is pushing hard for an Oscar for this film and cast. Just from the trailer, Viola Davis will get a best actress nomination.

‘Fences’ stars Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Jovan Adepo, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson, and Saniyya Sydney.

The Washington directed feature hits theaters on Christmas Day.

About August Wilson’s ‘Fences’

The sixth Play in Wilson’s Pittsburgh Cycle, Fences takes place in 1957 in what is assumed to be Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The play follows Troy Maxson, a 53-year-old man who struggles to provide for his wife and son in a time when slavery is over but the civil rights movement has still not come to fruition. Troy used to be an amazing baseball player, but was not able to make it to the Major Leagues due to the color of his skin. Troy has had to settle into the life of being a trash collector and barely scraping by, and this causes a lot of turmoil and frustration, especially in his relationships. Wilson’s play deals with dreams deferred and what it means to be a man, as well as covering themes of family and loyalty. Most notably, we see a marriage that looks loving and successful at the outset begin to fall apart as Troy’s lack of self-respect starts to crumble everything around him.

Rick Famuyiwa Teases Cyborg In The Flash Solo Movie

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Rumors have persisted for a while now that Ray Fisher’s Cyborg would appear in Ezra Miller’s The Flash in 2018. While nothing has been confirmed by the studio, some comments from Deborah Snyder hinted at a possible team up of the two youngest members of the Justice League.

Rick Famuyiwa, director of the the upcoming solo is adding fuel to this rumor fire as he took to twitter to share his progress in the film’s development with fans. Famuyiwa tweeted a picture that showed a the current draft of the film’s screenplay with the Funko Pop! figure of The Flash, accompanied by a another figure that seemed to be the  Cyborg figure from the same company.

funko-pop-vinyl-funko-dc-comics-pop-classic-cyborg-vinyl-figure-1_1024x1024Eagle-eyed fans quickly confirmed this by matching the foot of the image to that of a figure of Cyborg.  This still isn’t confirmation that the character will appear in the film and the director could just be having a little fun with the fans. Ultimately, an announcement from Warner Bros. or a direct confirmation from the director is all that is needed to put this issue to bed.

The Flash is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated movies in the upcoming DCEU (DC Extended Universe) film slate with Kiersey Clemons (Dope) cast as Iris West, Billy Crudup (Watchmen)as Dr. Henry Allen and Ezra Miller reprising his role as The Flash/Barry Allen from Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The film will be directed by Rick Famuyiwa (Dope) from a script aslo by Famuyiwa based on an earlier draft by Seth Grahame-Smith with a story by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Lego Movie, Han Solo). It is currently slated for a 2018 release. If the rumors are true, Ray Fisher will reprise his role as Victor Stone/ Cyborg. Casting is still underway for other roles in the film and the main villains are yet to be announced.

Review: Re:Zero ‘Just Keep Dying’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Re:Zero is just another addition in the list of divisive Anime that I find myself on the side of hating. While I don’t hate it as much as something like Sword Art Online, I feel that it’s still necessary to keep updated on the hottest shows people are watching and finding great. And whether or not you think so Re:Zero is defiantly a hit. I’m not here to downgrade its success but I am here to tell you why I watched it and why I think it failed on an emotional level for me when it was so intensely satisfying for others, and all the other things I hate about it. I’m not one to ignore the merits of a show just to make it seem like more of a piece of shit. My feelings about Anime usually are more complex than that, and with such a divisive show like Re:Zero I think there are too many people who are hating it but ignoring the good things (There aren’t many). Let’s just say I have a lot of feelings about Re:Zero and want to express all of them, good and bad.

The biggest thing Re:Zero has going for it is its lack of a self-insert character in Subaru. Most light novel adaptations will have a main character who is ostracized but totally bad-ass in ways that the “normal” people just don’t understand. Subaru is a fully realized character (regardless of how badly the story uses him). I can’t really say that anyone else is seeing Subaru is the main focus of the show 100% of the time. So why would people get behind a character like Subaru? Well he is an Otaku and that pulled a lot of people in. They see themselves in him because they relate to his feelings. BUT WAIT! I just said that he wasn’t a self insert character and then said people like him because they insert themselves onto him. Yeah its confusing. Subaru isn’t meant by the story to sit back and react to things like a self insert would. He takes action’s that are in-tune with his developing character. However his character is very relatable to a specific kind of person who likes Anime. People aren’t inserting themselves onto Subaru, they’re seeing themselves in him. He encapsulates an “honest” representation of a specific kind of person and his feelings are so genuinely portrayed in the show that people latch onto him even more. This is where my problems are provoked. Not start because my problems actually start with all the alternate fantasy world, otaku transported, trying to be meta by calling out tropes that are happening, and overall fixing situations by being “nice”. Basically my initial problem is the premise of the show but I’ll get into that later because it’s not the most important thing.

Anyway I don’t have an inherent problem with the kind of person Subaru is. He’s a goofball for sure. An otaku definitely. I give the show kudos for not glorifying his behavior in any way and just making his character seem bare, that is to us the audience. The way the entire world reacts to him is a different story. I feel like almost all of Subaru’s conversations have missing dialogue. Meaning that Subaru will say something completely awkward and in tune with his character, but no one ever really reacts to it or gets grossed out by him. Rem and Ram do sort of but more in a joking manner, like witty banter not actual disgust. He says things that someone sane would just think, but he says them out loud instead. But it’s weird because everyone acts as if he didn’t say it at all. They’re either just ignoring him for sake of the conversation or the writer just wanted more ways to cram how eccentric Subaru is down our throats. It makes this character that I should have some relate-ability with get annoying, which is the opposite of what you should be trying to do. I don’t care about people who say annoying things. But people who say annoying things and don’t face any repercussions from them sort of defeats the purpose of showing how much of a weirdo Subaru is.

To make a comparison, the main character of Watamote, Tomoko, is constantly doing and saying awkward things. However everyone in the real world is acting like normal people would. They get grossed out, they call her out and they don’t interact with her if they can. To be fair Watamote is specifically about Tomoko and her neurosis. But the fact that Subaru is so eccentric and weird with little to no consequences make’s the wish-fulfillment mentality that this show is trying to fulfill so pandering it feels gross. I’m not so much blaming Subaru as a character, I’m blaming the creator for the lack of mental opposition he’s putting Subaru in. But other than his eccentricities, Subaru deals with plenty of other shit. This is going to be a small part of a big issue so lets move onto the big hook of Re:Zero, Death = Time Travel.

I’m not gonna get into why people like the time travel story so much. There are shows that make it work great, like Madoka Magica, Steins;Gate, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and even Haruhi Suzumiya. Then shows that incorporate time travel which almost break a show for me, like Erased and Charlotte. Most of the reason it works from a narrative perspective is because it isn’t so much time travel, its more like time reversal. Subaru isn’t going back in time, he’s re-setting time. So there isn’t need to worry about paradox’s or any Back to the Future bullshit. So what could my problem possibly be with the way Re:Zero uses time travel? For one I hate the mystery box formula that comes before Subaru dies and goes back in time. Its sort of like Sherlock Holmes on easy mode. He only finds out important details when he dies. Then he goes back and fixes them, or dies again and finds out another piece to the puzzle. This is a way to get away with intricate writing, while not being a good writer. Its like looking at a scenario in retrospect and figuring everything out backwards. We can do that as viewers but to have a character who can do that, it feels like cheating. Also the stakes always feel inconsequential, I mean every time something bad happens I immediately think, “well he’s just gonna die and reset everything”. The emotion is cheap and unearned because Subaru will more or less get it the way he wants eventually. He learns from his mistakes but doesn’t have to deal with the consequences. He does however carry the emotional burden of failing over and over again. Whether you agree with this type of reaction is sorta irrelevant, the show sells his feelings and that is probably the best part of the show. Sure you want him to man up and keep going, but you can’t really argue that it would suck to fail and die and see other people die because of your failure. Also not being able to tell anyone just makes you feel more alone (Funnily enough I hear complaints about this from most people who hate the show, while I think it’s the most redeeming aspect of it).

But getting back to the narrative use of time travel, most of Re:Zero is boring because I’m just waiting for the route that will be the one to lead him to another checkpoint. And by the time we get there it doesn’t feel satisfying because I’ve been through these plot points four or five times already. If the plot was about an emotional dilemma to get his ideal outcome it would be engaging, but it’s not. The only fun thing is the cliffhanger’s when he dies. Which doesn’t appeal to me because it doesn’t feel earned like a mystery should. Then there’s the whole snuff fest that the show is constantly jerking off to. Since the consequences of actions are meaningless for the most part, Re:Zero decides it will gruesomely maim and murder its characters. This is super edgy and I hate it. I understand that it’s somewhat important because it has to break away at Subaru enduring these dramatic events, but it isn’t handled well enough to not come off as edgy snuff material. Sometimes you need to make things emotional for the viewer, as well as with the character. I feel Subaru’s emotion towards seeing his friends die. But when it happens I don’t care. I should be able to feel bad for other characters dying apart from being empathetic with the main character. That’s why its bad to put the whole emotional weight of a show on a single character, because otherwise there’s nothing investing us into other characters, except what ties to the main character they have (I’ll get into this more when I talk about the supporting cast). So basically the show moves at such a sluggish pace because of the time travel and the emotion isn’t impactful enough because of the mechanic of time travel, this is what we call a catch 22. If it were handled by a better writer maybe it could work, but it doesn’t here.

Now believe it or not there are other characters besides Subaru. But their back stories sand characterization is all heavy-handed and said in a “matter of fact” way that is doesn’t feel real or personal. It feels like something that Subaru can react and fix, rather than something a character would be dealing with. Emilia doesn’t feel like someone who’s been dealing with discrimination since she was born. She just accepts it which doesn’t seem like something she would do. The reason unfortunately relates back to wish-fulfillment. You see no guy wants a helpless girl, that’s sexist. But you can have a strong girl who has problems she “could” fix on her own, but as the main character, you’re gonna do it and win her affection because of it. That way you don’t look down on her and still get to be the hero. Here’s your cake, now eat it. Emilia’s discrimination isn’t to build her character, its to build Subaru’s ego. It’s so he can get close to her by fixing what’s wrong with her. There’s nothing inherently wrong with this idea, but having a worthless and incompetent character (whose portrayed by the show this way mind you) solve those problems is insulting. I guess I just like the idea of a man actually having to work for love rather than having it be dropped in his worthless lap because of circumstance. The same thing happens with Rem, she has an inferiority complex towards her sister but tries to be brave despite of that. Seems legit right? Wrong! As far as the show’s concerned she just exists to validate and be by Subaru’s side when Emilia isn’t around. A girl with inferiority issues, trying to console someone who’s learning how inferior he actually is. Are you seeing the contradiction here? However Subaru is seen as the one who can handle it more even though there is “somewhat” of an arc of Rem coming to terms with her inferiority. The show wants to portray them as two people being dependent on each other as something admirable and a way to heal. That’s not how you fucking get better! If you want to deal with emotions that’s fine, but don’t make them a tool for your fucking power trip fantasy. There’s a difference between being nice and being empathetic. Subaru isn’t empathetic at all, he just reacts to tits and feels justified in helping because they’re girls. That’s not empathy, that’s hormones.

I could go on all day about things I hate about Re:Zero. The edginess that stretches all across the second half, with characters like Beetlejuice. Or the inconsequential plot of the throne election. Or the way Subaru uses the honorific “tan” for Emilia almost right away. Frankly I don’t even feel like mentioning their relationship because its so baffling to me why it is even a thing (what I said before pretty much can equate to their romance). And all the escalated reactions of Subaru towards the knights or political figures. It’s like this dude is pure ID and has no sense of living in a society and never knows when to stop. But again he somehow knows how to handle everyone’s problems because he’s nice. Its out folks, we can get rid of all the Psychologist and Psychiatrists and replace them all with nice guys, because all it takes it a dick and good intentions to solve your problems. Re:Zero succeeded in wasting my time and offering me a unique character analysis without any real analyzing. Without Subaru its just another boring over realized fantasy world with meta commentary that further solidifies the wish-fulfillment perpetuated in otaku culture. Honestly the rest is inconsequential since the story doesn’t finish and feels too spread out to actually get invested in. I’m sure I would have been intrigued by the witch and the dragon lore, or the politics of succession and what it means to different people, or the struggle Emilia would face getting elected. Or the actual emotional difficulties that are tied to the characters, that are not Subaru. The story doesn’t care about these things unless they are relevant to Subaru, the ultimate entitled experience, gentlemen. I guess being a superman in nerd clothes takes the cake again. Fuck me.

‘Doctor Strange’: Benedict Cumberbatch Confirms Marvel Character For ‘Infinity War’?

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Doctor Strange and Marvel Comics’ Phrase three plans are underway, but what current part of Marvel Cinematic Universe the magical doctor would be part of has not been answered, until Benedict Cumberbatch seemingly dropped that news in a recent interview.

Cinemablend reports that Cumberbatch was discussing the “difficulty” of “aligning his schedule” with the other Avengers, when he had this to say.

“To get us all together will be quite something. That’s why this character is being introduced, to open up the next chapter. So watch this space to see how that unfolds.”

Doctor Strange entering the Avengers would certainly make an impact, and his ties to Thanos’ search for the Infinity stones makes sense for him appear. Benedict Cumberbatch’s comment stirs the pot, but it sadly does not reveal any definitive answers about Doctor Strange, and his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Doctor Strange To Meet The Avengers In The Next Film?

This is not the first the Doctor Strange/ Marvel Cinematic Universe rumor.

Cinemablend also reported that less substantiated rumors have surfaced to suggest that Doctor Strange will make his first Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance in Thor: Ragarnok.  Benedict Cumberbatch, nor anyone else has added any creedance to that rumor.

Doctor Strange will mark Marvel Comics’ most significant entrance of magic into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, something DC Comics has already touched on in television. However, Constantine did not last.

Justice League Dark will be coming out in animated form this year, and a live-action one is in the works, so there the two comic book giants are still vying for the upper magical hand. Doctor Strange will be released November 4, but Justice League Dark’s first entry is yet unknown.

Who will win the battle for magical dominance in the comic book adaptation world? As of now, that remains the type of knowledge that only one of mystical abilities can decipher.

Will Doctor Strange end up in Avenger: Infinity War? Thor: Ragarnok?

Leave your thoughts below.
