Archie Comics Joins Historic Love Is Love Anthology

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Archie Comics has announced  its participation in the historic Love is Love anthology graphic novel honoring the victims of Orlando’s Pulse Nightclub tragedy with two stories featuring Archie Comics characters designed to show support for the LGBTQ community.

Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, artist Stephen Byrne, and Archie legend Dan Parent have crafted two heartfelt and moving pieces featuring Kevin Keller, Archie, and other Archie Comics characters as they stand with the victims of this national tragedy and the entire LGBTQ community.

“For as long as I’ve been steering the ship at Archie, we have striven to showcase the town of Riverdale as a welcoming, inclusive and friendly place for everyone,” said Archie Comics CEO/Publisher Jon Goldwater.

“It made perfect sense to join forces with our friends at IDW and DC Entertainment to include Kevin Keller, Archie, and his friends in Love is Love. We’re honored to be part of such an important book and will continue to strive for a real world that’s as safe as Riverdale.”

The Love is Love collection, curated by writer Marc Andreyko, and features artwork from dozens of collaborators in the comic book industry. The project is designed to send a powerful message of support to the victims, survivors, and their families. All materials for the book have been donations and all the  proceeds will go directly to the families and victims via EQUALITY FLORIDA.

“When Marc Andreyko approached me and Archie about including a story in LOVE IS LOVE, I knew we had to be a part of it—and that we also had to approach it in a direct way,” said Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer and ‘Riverdale’ TV series showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

Archie Kevin Keller“It had to be in the more modern ‘New Riverdale’ style and obviously include our openly gay character, Kevin Keller. Marc then paired me with the supremely talented Stephen Byrne, who delivered gorgeous art. We often talk about how ‘Riverdale’ exists in the real world today, so we’re incredibly honored to be paying our respects to the terrible tragedy that happened in Orlando, along with so many of our colleagues in the industry.”

Kevin Keller was the first gay character in Archie Comics history. He was introduced in 2010 by longtime Archie writer/artist Dan Parent, whose contribution to Love is Love features a one-page pin-up with a message from Kevin Keller to the LGBTQ community about how to cope and respond to the tragic events that struck Orlando.

“It was an honor and a privilege to be included with all the talented creators in this book,” said Archie Comics writer/artist Dan Parent. “More importantly, to give back to the families and victims of such a tragedy is simply the right thing to do. Let’s help the healing process by contributing any way we can. And let’s remember to keep fighting!”

The Love is Love anthology graphic novel goes on sale December 21st at comic book shops and can be pre-ordered by clicking here.

Daisy Ridley Thinks Identity Of Rey’s Father Was Answered In ‘Force Awakens’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

One of the biggest discussion points among fans after 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the mystery of Rey’s parentage. Is it Luke? How about Obi-Wan? She’s a clone of Anakin! Now, these were all theories we heard over the course of the year, but Ridley thinks it was more obvious.

The actress was asked about the secret, and this is what she had to say:

“I thought a lot was answered in The Force Awakens. Then after the screening I went for a drink with my agent and everyone, and we were chatting away and I realized that oh, in their minds it’s not answered at all!”

She then talked about the enthusiasm among fans about the character’s backstory:

“I’d love to see the look on people’s faces, but with answers come more questions, and there’s definitely going to be enough to keep people going for another two years!”

Who do you think Rey’s father is? Sound off in the comments below with your theories!

Star Wars: Episode 8 hits theaters on December 15, 2017.

Marvel’s ‘Inhumans’ Has a Showrunner, ‘Iron Fist’ Showrunner Scott Buck

Monkeys Fighting Robots

As everyone here has been talking avidly about The Inhumans TV show on ABC, we didn’t know who was running it. We wonder no more thanks to ComicBook.com, Scott Buck, showrunner of the upcoming Iron Fist on Netflix is serving as showrunner and executive producer on The Inhumans.  If you’re not entirely familiar with Scott Buck he worked on the last three seasons of Dexter, Six Feet Under, Rome, and Coach.  Now we have a showrunner and executive producer, we know who is in charge of The Inhumans. Now we ponder, what is the next stage of all this?

Showrunner and Executive Producer are one thing for The Inhumans, now we need to see what’s next.

Here’s one thing I learned about Scott Buck, his last three seasons of Dexter were mixed among fans. On the other hand, his Iron Fist could turn out to be great, so who knows at this point. We still don’t know who’s going to be writing the series or anything else of that nature. We know the focus of the series with Black Bolt and his family and it’ll be filmed in IMAX. The series is primed to be huge for Marvel and ABC, with the first two episodes debuting in IMAX theaters for two weeks starting on Labor Day Weekend 2017.

With the big IMAX debut, we will then have the ABC debut on Tuesday, September 26th, 2017 for the eight-episode series. The Inhumans is locked and loaded to be a big draw from the start. If they’re putting Scott Buck in charge of it, all I can say is they must really like what he’s doing on Iron Fist. That’s what caught my eye, Iron Fist isn’t even out yet and he’s already set for The Inhumans. This announcement shows that Marvel must have a lot of faith in him. We’ll know more soon enough.

Now I put it to you the Internet Universe, what do you think about this announcement? Let me know in the comments below. At least we are starting to put The Inhumans puzzle together, one piece at a time.

‘Rogue One’ Director Gareth Edwards Wants To Make A Star Wars Film For This Beloved Character

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Rogue: A Star Wars Story is less than two weeks away, but even with all the Star Wars excitement in the air, many fans are still looking to and curious about the future. Though, Episode VIII and IX are yet to come, some are wondering about the future Star Wars Anthology films, like the upcoming Han Solo…solo film.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Director Gareth Edwards has another Star Wars character in mind that hasn’t been announced thus far, according to Comicbook.

“To be honest, Rogue One is the period I love. It’s connecting to the original New Hope. If someone made other films in that era – and I don’t necessarily think this is happening, I have no inside knowledge – but that desire to see Obi-Wan Kenobi. Tattooine, basically, I love. As a kid I remember wanting to grow up there; anything in that “Original Trilogy” era I am just besotted with, and it’s just like going back home to your childhood.”

The Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director says there are no plans, but for anyone who follows DCTV’s executive producers, they say “No” and “Never” all the time. Edwards’ passion is apparently there, which should help assuage Star Wars fans who might be skeptical about Rogue One.

obi-wan-kenobi-the-phantom-menace

If how Lucasfilm and the Star Wars family feel about him has any bearing on the future of an Obi-Wan Kenobi film, Comicbook writer Lucas Siegal stated that they seem to really enjoy working with this guy.

“Literally everyone I talked to this weekend, from the actors to Lucasfilm execs to the mocap team and ILM and even PR simply loved working with him. It’s very clear Lucasfilm would be interested in working with Edwards again, and with his unbridled passion for Star Warsthere’s little doubt that if they made that call he’d pick up the phone.”

Now, it is hard to attach judgment on whether Lucasfilm/Disney will want to just do whatever Star Wars passion project Gareth Edwards wants.

That being said, with a mega success for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and a recent rumor suggesting Episode IX will be the last in the saga, there’s no reason it couldn’t happen.

‘The Circle’ Trailer: Tom Hanks, Emma Watson, John Boyega See Everything

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The Circle is a new thriller based on Dave Eggers’ novel of the same name, and this new trailer promises plenty of Big Brother intrigue.

Tom Hanks plays a Steve Jobs type, with Emma Watson the new employee of his company and John Boyega a coworker. It’s tough to tell from this trailer, just how tech savvy The Circle is, but see for yourself:

A young female tech worker takes a job at a powerful internet corporation, quickly rises up the company’s ranks, and soon finds herself in a perilous situation, which that involves privacy, surveillance, and freedom. She comes to learn that her decisions and actions will determine the future of humanity.

Maybe it’s just me, but the tech here doesn’t seem that “out there.” It should still be worth a look regardless because, hey, it’s Tom Hanks as a shady brainiac. Plus, it’s the rare bearded Hanks performance. I doubt it ages well, however.

Aside from Hanks, Watson and Boyega, The Circle has Bill Paxton (no doubt here to devour some scenery), Karen Gillan, Boyhood‘s Eller Coltraine, and Patton Oswalt. It’s directed by James Ponsoldt, previously of The Spectacular Now and The End of the Tour, among others.

The Circle opens (get it?) April 28.

REVIEW: ‘The Walking Dead’ S7 Episode 7 “Sing Me A Song” [SPOILERS]

Monkeys Fighting Robots

At long last, The Walking Dead brings us back to the action. After weeks of side-character meandering, the show refocuses on the characters that matter. There’s not as much action in this episode, aside from some torture on Negan’s part. However, the continued build towards a larger conflict works, as there’s something the audience can really become invested in.

The new look into Negan isn’t quite as compelling, but it is important context. The Walking Dead has made it clear that Negan is bloodthirsty and merciless. This new look at his leadership inside his kingdom explain how he maintains dominance. As twisted as his actions may be, there are still elements of humanity to him. He can put the beat down on people, but he also knows how to mess with people’s heads. Both Dwight and his wife are firmly under Negan’s control, despite how much they hate him. It’s the same sort of characterization that made The Governor exciting, thankfully without Andrea. It’s a welcome new dynamic that justifies Negan becoming so central to the show.

“Sing me a Song” also beefs up the resistance to Negan. Carl’s immature anger leads to capture by Negan, which helps him see more from his father’s view (at least halfway). Rosita, whose importance is steadily growing, continues to assemble her arsenal. Rick and Michonne have an evolving dynamic, as they don’t see eye to eye on how to handle Negan. Their relationship still feels like fan service, but it’s good to see it hasn’t changed who they are fundamentally. Now this stronger look at the leaders highlights the weaknesses in the sidekicks. Scott and Gabriel aren’t all that interesting, and Eugene has reverted back his original big-word goofball character. However, since “Sing Me A Song” focuses on the characters that matter most, rather than the side cast, it feels like it all matters.

The idea that Negan could take Carl, or even Judith, also adds more stakes than character deaths. Event deaths are nothing new for the show, though maybe not on the scale of Abraham and Glenn. But such big deaths are a cornerstone of The Walking Dead. Now that Negan’s open to taking other avenues of cruelty, it makes him more unpredictable. The prospect of another big death during the midseason finale isn’t nearly as exciting as Rick literally fighting to save his family. The Walking Dead has raised interest again with such a dynamic antagonist, but now it has the chance to capitalize off it.

Will Smith keeps That ‘Bad Boys III’ Dream Alive

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Last night, Will Smith stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote his ridiculous looking movie, Collateral Beauty – but he also teased fans about a more popular ridiculous movie: a potential third Bad Boys movie.

News of Bad Boys III has been going back and forth for some time now. Depending on what day it is, the movie is a green light or a red light. Usually, Martin Lawrence seems to think it’s a 100% certainty, for some reason…

Anyway, Smith said Bad Boys III is “very close.” Check out this clip:

So there you have it. If Smith says it’s happening that’s probably on better authority than Martin Lawrence. Just sayin’.

Personally, I really enjoy the original but I remember hating Bad Boys II. It was abhorrent soulless garbage, at least from my perspective in 2003. But, as The Internets sometimes do, Michael Bay’s sequel has undergone a reappraisal with fans. Many see it as some gonzo work of maniacal, self-contained genius from Bay. Perhaps I should watch it again. UnPop’s Curtis Waugh has some thoughts along those lines.

There’s no Bad Boys III release date or shooting schedule or anything, but a tease from the most important star of the franchise is a good sign.

Do you think this is a good idea?
