The Fellowship of the Ring Reunited to Take on a Cave Troll

Monkeys Fighting Robots

A little over fifteen years after the release of the Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, one of the film’s stars, Dominic Managhan, has posted some playful photos on Instagram which show him and some of his co-stars reenacting one of the most iconic scenes from the film.

Dominic Monaghan played Merry, one of a quartet of hobbits who set out on a dangerous quest that would take them a long way from home. Joining him are his trusty companion Pippin, played by Billy Boyd, Elijah Wood who played Frodo, Orlando Bloom brandishing a fork in place of the bow he wielded as Legolas, and 2017 Oscar nominee Viggo Mortensen, whose memory seems to put a rifle in place of Aragorn’s sword.

The first image shows the five actors striking a pose at least vaguely reminiscent of their actions in the cave troll scene in the Mines of Moria. The caption “They have a cave troll” is the line Boromir (Sean Bean) says as a prelude to the action, perhaps his most famous line in the whole film. The other two photos are slightly awkward selfies taken by Monaghan with his unsuspecting co-stars. Check out the photos:

For any fan of any franchise or recurring property, images of their on-screen heroes fooling around in a bar that, let’s be honest, looks like it could be on the set of Middle Earth, is a gift that represents a deep bond with the story. It’s a story that will continue to resonate with cultures far and wide for many years to come: the coming together of the most unlikely group of people from all over the fantasy world of Middle Earth to take on the darkest power that has ever threatened their world…

The Fellowship of the Ring was the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, based on the books by J.R.R.Tolkein, directed by Peter Jackson and filmed almost exclusively in New Zealand. The Fellowship of the Ring exploded into the public eye in December 2001, The Two Towers at the end of 2002 and the story reached its conclusion a year later with The Return of the King.

Who’s joining me for a Lord of the Rings marathon?

1. Saga

Saga is not only one of Image Comics’ best modern day series, it’s one of the modern day’s best comics period. Alana and Marko are star crossed lovers from the opposite sides of a galactic war. They’re constantly on the move, running away from their past in order to create a better future for their daughter. This is a story about love, and about family. It has action, humor, drama, and everything else a person could want in a story, even if you’re not usually “into sci-fi.”

Antoine Fuqua is Out as ‘Scarface’ Remake Director

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Antoine Fuqua is no longer your Scarface remake director.

Just a day after Ben Affleck said he’d no longer be directing The Batman, Fuqua announces he is stepping away from the remake, mostly because Sony is after him for an Equalizer remake with Denzel Washington.

While Universal still wants to get this remake going by the spring, they may shift their schedule around to let Fuqua return to the project. They are still working on casting the film, and Diego Luna is the leader int he clubhouse to portray this new Tony Montana. This new Scarface was set to change settings from Miami to Los Angeles and focus on a Mexican immigrant rather than a Cuban refugee.

This is six of one, half a dozen of the other. Fuqua jumps ship on a remake of a remake because of his commitment to a sequel to a TV remake? Call me crazy, but I would like to see Antoine Fuqua do something original instead of simply keep a seat warm on this remake train. The guy is one of the more underrated directors in Hollywood these days, it would be great to see him tackle something original.

It worked out for him with Training Day.

Capaldi Announces Exit from Doctor Who

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In an interview with interview with BBC Radio 2 presenter Jo Whiley, Peter Capaldi announced that the 2017 Christmas Special would be his last episode on the infamous show.

Capaldi’s tenure As the fan favorite Doctor will coincide with the departure of the show’s current lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat.

Mr. Moffat’s current run as writer has been riddled with criticism. Uneven writing and unclear left some viewers feeling that Doctor Who had perhaps seen its final days. Many people criticized the often unfeeling nature of the 12th Doctor. On the other hand, some fans have blamed this version of the Doctor on Moffat’s writing as opposed to Capaldi’s acting.

Either way, with a new companion joining the Doctor in 2017 and a new Doctor joining the TARDIS in 2018, Doctor Who is in for a shake up.

Who would you like to see as the new Doctor? Tell us in the comments!

Seven Science Fiction Technologies That Aren’t Science Fiction Anymore

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Back in 1966, Star Trek introduced television audiences to a host of technological wonders. View screens provided for FaceTime like calls and Captain Kirk would sign bulky, iPad like devices. Flash-forward 50 years or so and a treasure-trove of other science fiction stories in books, television, comic books, and film, and you find an amazing array of technologies. Some, like Doctor Who’s TARDIS time machine, is likely for a future most of us won’t be around for. But other technology is just around the corner and soon to be as common as video calls and touchscreen devices.

7. Levitation

We all love the hover boards from Back to the Future. I’m here to tell you it’s already happening but not exactly in a way that’ll make it cool like McFly. Requiring super-cooled conductors, “quantum locking” or “quantum levitation” allows objects to hover in place and move, without little resistance, along a super-cooled path. Don’t lose hope! The first step is figuring out how to do it and that’s out of the way.

My Five Favorite Films From the Year I Was Born: 1994

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Contrary to what all my legal documents say, I was born in 1994. My birthday was in December, so when I was adopted my mom changed it to January 1995. She did this to ensure I don’t have to go through the disrespect of someone asking me if my birthday and Christmas presents could be consolidated into one gift given at some shaky time in between the two. However, I wasn’t the only above average thing to come out of 1994. Right on the cusp of the mid 20th century, some of the greatest films were released out into the wild. The following five films hold a near, and dear place in my cold, dark heart. Not only did most of them mic drop all over the box office, but they also contributed to me becoming the person I am today…as cringy as that sounds. If you haven’t seen these films yet, or haven’t seen them in a while, I encourage avid binge watching of my list.

5. The Lion King

Forget DJ Khaled. The most inspiring person of my childhood was Rafiki. Honestly, if someone would just whack me on the head with a stick every time I’m not thinking straight, my life would be going in a better direction-possibly the direction in which I end up being able to spend money on extra guac without thinking twice. All jokes aside, The Lion King was a movie that will follow me as a classic to this day. I love it for the score, and character richness. Timon and Pumba are the friends I wish I had, and the hyenas are the friends I have.

Ben Affleck Steps Down As The Director Of ‘The Batman’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Ben Affleck has dropped directing The Batman, reports Variety in an exclusive story. Affleck will still be playing the role and executive producing the project. In speaking to Variety, Affleck has this to say:

There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.

This is not the first DC Extended Universe movie to have problems keeping a director. Most recently The Flash had the same issue, with director Rick Famuyiwa (Dope) exiting that project.

Rumor has it a shortlist already exists for The Batman with War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves high on the list.

Monkeys Fighting Robots will continue to cover this still developing story.

What do you think of this breaking news? And who else could take over now that Affleck is no longer behind the camera? Comment below!

Review: ‘Steven Universe’: Adventures in Light Distortion: Messing With Physics

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Steven goes on a search and recovery mission with the Gems.

After the events of the last episode, the Crystal Gems have to into blast space on a rescue mission to find Steven’s Dad. Its revealed Pink Diamond kept a zoo for humans as a trophies which quickly becomes the team’s intended destination. This really helps to show just how callous the Diamonds can be if this is the view they have of humanity. Of course, given the way Gems never evolve and are set in their ways, a species which is so random in its behavior probably is bizarre for them to witness.

Unfortunately the episode offers a mixed bag of themes and is a bit all over the place. First it tries comedy by manipulating the ship’s gravity and changing the shape of the Crystal Gems in the process. Then it tries to switch back to being a more dramatic character centric episode. This would good except it comes from guilt which emerges as Steven starts to blame himself for events leading to this point. This almost feels counterproductive compared to the previous episode where he tried to hunt for answers. He shouldn’t be punished just for trying to figure out who what is going on in his world. Sure the team went off a little haphazardly but Steven has enough guilt and anxiety in him already. The show doesn’t have the layer it on for him any thicker.

This episode is good but seems more off balanced compared to everything which happened in the previous one. There is a distinct bit of foreshadowing here as Connie, Peridot, and Lapis Lazuli are instructed to protect Beach City as the regular team is off planet. This will result in a very entertaining episode in the future as the trio will no doubt have to fight for the first time as a team. Hopefully it will be a bit more balanced than this one.
