David F. Sandberg has taken on the tall task of bringing Captain Marvel to the big screen. He will direct the upcoming Shazam! for New Line and Warner Brothers. Chuck star Zachary Levi will portray the iconic DC Comics hero, with Asher Angel set to play his alter ego, Billy Batson.
Production of the movie kicked off today which led to an official synopsis being released. You can check it out below:
“We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong)”.
The rest of the cast was also officially announced today. The film stars Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Ron Cephas Jones as the Wizard.
To round out the Shazam! news dump, it was revealed that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson would serve as an executive producer on the film. Johnson has been connected for some time to Shazam! as he was set to play the villain Black Adam. It was then revealed that he would not be appearing in the film but rather in his own solo film. His first appearance is rumored to be in Suicide Squad 2
