Black Clover: Beating Magic Through Brute Force

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Black Clover

Black Clover is a manga that came out around the time Bleach and Naruto were ending. Many people dislike it because of how many elements it borrows and combines but in my eyes, that’s what makes it so great. Shounen comics are made with a formula in mind so that they can hit all the right notes. This is no exception.

Plot

The story follows a young orphan who hopes to become Magic Emperor. That’s essentially the title given to the strongest magician of the Clover kingdom. Apart from being given a title, the Emperor also has the Order of the Magic Knights at his disposal.

In this universe everyone is given a unique book that gives them spells to use kind of like Zatch Bell.

There’s one big problem with that dream though. The kid can’t use magic! In a world where class and status are determined by how much magic you can control, this puts our hero at a clear disadvantage.

Luckily he doesn’t let that hold him back as he values hard work over talent. Oh and he gains a tome that summons a sword that negates and reflects magic.

He eventually joins a Magic Knight order after impressing its leader with his physical abilities and his never give up attitude. The squad, however, is considered the worst one of the available 9 and full of problematic characters. Magic orders act like villages in Naruto where the characters have to take on missions to make money and increase their reputation across the world.

Everything is clearly stacked up against our protagonist which makes it that much more enjoyable when he succeeds.

I like to compare Black Clover to Harry Potter meets Naruto with a sprinkle of Fairy Tail and Magi.

One thing that needs to be mentioned is how fast the pace of the story is. Within 3 or 4 chapters, our character has met all of the important characters and has already developed new abilities. There’s constant action happening but the little downtime that we get is still enjoyable.

Black Clover Asta gets his tome
Everyone was surprised Asta received a tome.

Characters

The main character is named Asta. As stated earlier, he has no mana and relies mainly on his physical abilities to make it through dangerous situations. He is ignorant to most of the finer details of the world due to being from a backwater village, being poor, and having no magic skills. What he does have is the ability to persevere, no matter the situation. He’s the comic relief character the majority of the time. His magic tome summons an anti-magic sword.

Yuno is the rival character. He has much of the same background as Asta as they are from the same orphanage. Unlike Asta, he has limitless mana and has powerful wind magic. He’s more serious and could be compared to Sasuke Uchiha from Naruto. He isn’t whiny and actually likes and respects Asta from the beginning though.

In terms of main characters that’s it. What we do get are recurring characters from the different Magic Knight squads instead. They each have their special traits and magic that I wouldn’t be able to do justice for by mentioning them here.

Black Clover Asta using his sword
Having a big sword helps with never giving up.

Art Style

The art style is the typical manga art. Nothing really stands out negatively or positively in terms of style. Sometimes the artist seems to not have enough time to finish the complete chapter, but it rarely happens. It’s more of a minor inconvenience, by that point.

Read it

If you like fantasy, magic, and underdogs, this is the manga for you. All of the characters are lovable and the only thing that might grind your gears is how positive most outcomes are. It’s worth a read if only to get an idea of how combining elements from different stories can make something good. Black Clover is a good magical story that should be more popular than trash like Fairy Tail. If you insist on not reading it, I heard there’s an anime so give that a shot.

Watch: ‘Wonder Woman’ – “Return” TV Spot

Monkeys Fighting Robots

A brand new Wonder Woman TV spot has been released on the Warner Bros. Youtube channel. Watch it below.

This piece of marketing just reassures, to me, that WB has learned from their past mistakes. With Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, the company put out way too much footage in the form of trailers, TV spots, and short clips. With Wonder Woman they’ve given fans enough to chew on before the release date, yet done it in a way that doesn’t reveal many spoilers.

“Wonder Woman hits movie theaters around the world next summer when Gal Gadot returns as the title character in the epic action adventure from director Patty Jenkins. Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.”

Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot as the title character, Chris Pine, Robin Wright as Antiope, David Thewlis, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Connie Nielsen, Ewen Bremner, and Lucy Davis.

The film hits theaters on June 2, 2017.

NXT TakeOver: Chicago Primer!

Monkeys Fighting Robots

NXT takes over the second city with their first special in this current incarnation. It may be glorious, but will this be Hideo’s night to shine? Is there an Asuka problem brewing? Ninja rap, and much more as we dive in…

The popular opinion of the WWE Universe is that this year’s “superstar shakeup” really did a number on NXT. At first glance, this notion is hard to argue. Samoa Joe jumped CrossFit Jesus in January, taking his star power and experience to RAW. Austin Aries followed in March to add star power to 205 Live! (Which was like putting a band-aid on the screen door of a submarine, but I digress)

WrestleMania followed, which meant the annual call-ups commenced. By the time the dust cleared, the yellow brand was sans their previous World and Tag Team Champions (Shinsuke Nakamura and The Revival respectively), a perfect fan favorite (Tye Dillinger), and “The Drifter” (Ok, you got me. Nobody gives a shit about “The Drifter,” but I have this thing about lists of 3’s! Sue me!)

Annual resets are nothing new in the wrestling business, but this is the first year that NXT has really needed to circle the wagons and reestablish the hierarchy. Thankfully, Bobby Roode was anointed as the lynchpin of NXT for the foreseeable future. “The Glorious One” looks to defend this title this month for the second straight TakeOver special, but we’ll touch on that soon enough.

Right now, without further delay, let’s take a look at the menu for TakeOver: Chicago…

Singles Match: Roderick Strong vs. Eric Young

This match was voted “most likely to jerk the curtain” in high school. Seriously though, these two gentlemen are “pro’s pros” and this match will be technically sound. The result will have zero consequences regardless of the finish, so fans will just be able to sit back and enjoy the show.

Prediction: EY cheats and wins! Then again.

Anyone notice that Drew McIntyre isn’t on this card? This doesn’t seem practical considering the magnitude of his star power. One could easily see members of Sanity interfering, and McIntyre of Kassius Ohno coming to Rody’s aid. Just sayin’…

United Kingdom Championship Match: Tyler Bate (c) vs. Pete Dunne

NXT.com didn’t even bother to create a graphic for this match. This gesture is a microcosm of how everyone really feels about the United Kingdom Championship. Trust me.

With this in mind, I present to you a picture of Finn Bálor in front of the United Kingdom Championship logo… Boy, can dude smile or what?

Prediction: Mikey Curalli is going to publish an article about Finn Bálor in the next week or so that is actually going to have words in it. Promise.

Oh, and the champion will prevail, just a hunch.

NXT Women’s Championship Match: Asuka (c) vs. Ruby Riot vs Nikki Cross

According to this very reputable sight, Asuka has been successful in 175 consecutive matches to start her NXT/WWE career. (25 more Ws than Goldberg speared through to start his career for those of you keeping score at home) Yes, the empress has been leaving more ladies lying than Wilt Chamberlain, and there is no end in sight.

Asuka is an amazingly charismatic performer who no doubt has the “IT factor” that so many performer’s lack these days. Seriously, from step one out of the curtain, nobody in the arena can take their eyes off her. There is also this thing about Asuka being terrifying when she smiles at you. Nobody knows if she is going to kiss your cheek or kick your face off your head. All of this is incredible to witness, however, shouldn’t all of this dominance be a touch alarming?

At some point, Asuka has to take an L, right? Somebody has to come along and knock her down a peg. The problem is nobody currently on the NXT roster that has even given her a competitive match. Like, for real, she just kicks people in the head a bunch of times, laughs at their feeble attempts at offense, and wins…

The fantasy booker in me obviously sees the potential of a showdown between an undefeated Asuka and Charlotte sometime down the road. WWE will take all my money to see that, but what becomes of the NXT women’s division when their champion grows tired of playing Triple-A ball?

Ruby Riot and Nikki Cross are fine characters, and I enjoy them both. However, Saturday night has the makings of an Ausuka rinse/repeat session. This is a problem. There are no stakes in her matches anymore. That needs to change really fast.

Prediction: Everyone has fun watching Asuka dance and kick hoes in the nose. #greatattitudeerashirt

NXT Tag Team Championship Ladder Match: DIY vs The Authors of Pain (c)

This match almost went to hell when Tommaso Ciampa tweaked his ankle at a live event Thursday night. This led to Triple H assuring everyone that Ciampa will compeat while fielding questions during NXT conference call. Hindsight being 20/20, nobody should ever question the toughness of anyone who has ever been referred to as “Psycho Killer.”

With hopefully everyone participating this ladder match, these teams are primed to steal the show. DIY has brought the best out of the Authors to date, and adding a ladder certainly, raises the steaks. Gargano and Ciampa have always considered Chicago as their adopted home, so a hero’s welcome is no doubt in store for the champions.

Side Note: How on Earth did WWE/NXT not name the Authors of Pain Tokka and Rahzar?

No joke, one of the dude’s names… is REZAR! You mean to tell me that fans would not go bananas if you named these two after ninja turtle villains? Who dropped the ball with this? These dudes should be coming to the ring to Vanilla Ice doing this to everyone dressed like gigantic animals! Nobody can convince me otherwise!

Prediction: The heroes do not die in this one folks! DIY regains in a stunner.

PS: Just gonna leave this here. You’re welcome.

NXT Championship Match: Bobby Roode (c) vs. Hideo Itami

TakeOver: Chicago means more to Hideo Itami than anyone else on the card. Some fans have viewed the former Kenta as a “bust” of some sorts. So much so, that Hideo actually acknowledged the rumors on Twitter this week.

Saturday will no doubt be the most important match of Itami’s career to date. Luckily for him, his dance partner is simply… GLORIOUS. Roode is the perfect heel champion to bring out the fire-breathing baby face deep down in Hideo. NXT has done a great job building to this encounter as well, considering these two had a face off not long after Roode’s debut on the yellow brand.

Prediction: Tons of flips, strong strikes, and false finishes. Roode will retain after some glorious chicanery. Mark my words though, the night ends with Roode in a stare down with either Drew McIntyre or Adam Cole! (bay-bay)

Till next time people.. GO NINJA! GO NINJA! GO!

Any predictions of your own for TakeOver: Chicago? Leave them, and any other comments in the section below. Don’t forget to follow me on Twitter as well @themikeycuralli!

The CW Releases Synopsis For ‘Legends Of Tomorrow’ Season Three

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The CW has released an updated synopsis for season three of hit superhero show Legends of Tomorrow. You can read it below.

After the defeat of Eobard Thawne and his equally nefarious Legion of Doom, the Legends face a new threat created by their actions at the end of last season. In revisiting a moment in time that they had already participated in, they have essentially fractured the timeline and created anachronisms – a scattering of people, animals, and objects all across time! Our team must find a way to return all the anachronisms to their original timelines before the time stream falls apart. But before our Legends can jump back into action, Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) and his newly established Time Bureau call their methods into question. With the Time Bureau effectively the new sheriffs in town, the Legends disband – until Mick Rory (Dominic Purcell) discovers one of them in the middle of his well-deserved vacation in Aruba.  Seeing this as an opportunity to continue their time travelling heroics, Sara (Caity Lotz) wastes no time in getting the Legends back together.  We reunite with billionaire inventor Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), the unconventional historian-turned-superhero Nick Heywood (Nick Zano), and Professor Martin Stein (Victor Garber) and Jefferson ‘Jax’ Jackson (Franz Drameh), who together form the meta-human Firestorm. Once reunited, the Legends will challenge the Time Bureau’s authority over the timeline and insist that however messy their methods may be, some problems are beyond the Bureau’s capabilities. Some problems can only be fixed by Legends. Based on the characters from DC, DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Greg Berlanti (‘Arrow,’ ‘The Flash,’ ‘Supergirl’), Marc Guggenheim (‘Arrow,’ ‘Trollhunters,’ ‘Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters’), Andrew Kreisberg (‘Arrow,’ ‘The Flash,’ ‘Eli Stone,’ ‘Warehouse 13’), Phil Klemmer (‘The Tomorrow People,’ ‘Chuck’) and Sarah Schechter (‘Arrow,’ ‘The Flash’)

It sounds like much like they did from season one to season two, the network is playing around with the show’s formula a bit. Legends has been a fun addition to the network’s roster of DC shows, and I for one am glad to see it returning in full. Now if they can also bring back Wentworth Miller as Captain Cold (and in a time travel show anything is possible)!

What do you guys think? Comment and discuss below.

You can head over to Newsarama to check out more synopsis’ for the next chapters of Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and new show Black Lightning.

Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me: Lynch’s Gem 25 Years Later

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In April of 1990, a new television show premiered from film auteur David Lynch. The show was Twin Peaks, and in the blink of an eye, it was a hit. By the time Season one ended, Twin Peaks was one of the highest rated shows on TV. But then, the network made a decision that would change everything. Season two tanked, ending with the show’s cancellation and a cliffhanger ending that’s never been resolved. A year later, Lynch revived Twin Peaks with Fire Walk With Me, a prequel movie that would help add to the mystique of this show. But Fire Walk With Me, as many of Lynch’s movies, was not exactly what fans expected.

Before we go on, let’s catch up those not familiar with the television show. The basics are this: Laura Palmer (Cheryl Lee), the homecoming queen of the local high school is found murdered. FBI agents arrive to investigate the case. Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) begins to meet the colorful, bizarre, and broken characters of the titular town.

By the end of Season one, finding the murderer of Laura Palmer was almost irrelevant. Twin Peaks wasn’t a cop procedural show after all. Lynch was subverting many of the popular primetime soaps that were popular at the time. Twin Peaks was a horror-comedy-drama soap opera. People loved it.

However, ABC wanted Laura Palmer’s murder solved. The network forced Lynch and co-creator Mark Frost to resolve the issue. As if pulling the thread on a sweater, solving that mystery would prove the beginning of the end of the show. By the end of Season Two, Twin Peaks was imploding in spectacular fashion, and ABC cancelled it.

Twenty-five years later and Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me
is as interesting as ever.

Lynch, however, loved the world he’d made. A year later, the director went to work on Fire Walk With Me, a prequel to the show. However, co-creator Frost and Lynch did not see eye-to-eye. So, Lynch went ahead on his own.

As information about the production trickled out, fans hoped for answers, especially to the cliffhanger ending to the second season. Instead, Lynch presented Fire Walk With Me, a film that’s dark, moody, weird (AF), and endlessly interesting.

The premise of Fire Walk With Me follows the last seven days of Laura Palmer. Fans of the show will note that some sequences are already known to viewers. OF course, the ending, or better said, Laura Palmer’s end, was already known too. But that’s part of the weight of terror that presses down on this movie.

Those unfamiliar with Twin Peaks might find Fire Walk With Me partially unwatchable. The film stands on its own. However, some sequences will make almost no sense or even less sense than they’re intended to. Never forget, Fire Walk With Me is a Lynch movie through and through, maybe even one of his best, but wth that comes all the yummy weirdness that gives the director his signature.

Who killed Laura Palmer?

Fire Walk With Me, in part, is like the anti-Twin Peaks. Where the show balanced out a lot of tones, like a dark and shifting sense of humor, the film drops a lot of that. Or at least, the theatrical cut does, but I’m not going to get into the 90 minutes of deleted footage that makes the movie even better.

So, what’s interesting about Fire Walk With Me, now, 25 years after its release? Well, like most of Lynch’s work, there’s a lot of subtexts, both subtle and blunt. Fire Walk With Me starts off with a TV getting smashed by a sledgehammer. It’s as if Lynch himself needed to have this scene to vent his frustrations with how the show ended.

On the TV show, everyone loved the late Laura Palmer. In Fire Walk With Me, we see life through her eyes. We’re learning exactly why everyone loved her. We’re getting glimpses into her fractured life that includes drug use, infidelity, and abuse. Palmer’s life devolves and ends possibly from mystical forces.

Twenty-five years later and Fire Walk With Me is as interesting as ever. Initial critical response was lackluster, and the movie bombed at the box office. But reevaluation of Lynch and his films inevitably leads to a re-watch of Fire Walk With Me. And what more and more people are finding is that Fire Walk With Me, even with its flaws and behind-the-scenes turmoil, is worthy of admiration and a revisit.

As promised by one character to another way back in the original show’s finale, Twin Peaks is returning to TV, 25 years later on Showtime. It premieres May 21, and with Lynch and Frost in complete creative control, we may finally get the fully-realized weird mystery ride they always wanted in the first place.

Tom Hardy Is Venom in The Upcoming Sony ‘Venom’ Movie

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Sony’s ‘Venom’ Solo-Film Just Got A Star & Director!

Venom‘, the solo film for one of Spider-Man’s iconic villains, is beginning to pick up some steam. Sony has said to move this project to the top of their priorities list! The first thing they did was lock down an amazing actor and director for the film.

As reported by HollywoodReporter.com, Tom Hardy is set to star as the titular Venom. Ruben Fleischer will be the director of the project. Fleischer is known for directing ‘Zombieland‘ so the needed mix of humor & horror is there.

Venom

Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner wrote a script for ‘Venom‘. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing along with Amy Pascal.

There are no plot details but Tom Hardy will play Eddie Brock, the character who first became Venom. Eddie Brock/Venom has been a very popular figure in the comics since his 1988 debut. Though he mainly is a villain for Spider-Man, seen in Sam Rami’s ‘Spider-Man 3‘, the character is known to also be an anti-hero. Seems like that’s the role he will place in this solo film. Fans are also hoping to see the inclusion of long-time Venom enemy, Carnage! He could be the perfect villain to kick-off these films, especially with the planned darker tone said to be used in this.

This spin-off of the ‘Spider-Man‘ franchise will serve as the start to movies based on many characters from the comics. The studio is also developing a Silver Sable/Black Cat. With the rebooted ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ coming this summer, Sony is finally starting to turn things around for the franchise. Marvel Studios isn’t connected to this film, though.

Sony also announced the film will be released on Oct. 5th, 2018.

What do you think of this casting and directing choice?

‘Jimmy’s Bastards’ #1: Review to a Kill

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Garth Ennis has always been a writer that understands how to turn great elevator pitches into even better comics. What if the CIA had a super-powered hit-squad? What if a priest literally found God? And now, what if James Bond’s indiscretions came back to haunt him? The result is Jimmy’s Bastards, Aftershock’s latest series which sees Ennis and artist Russ Braun turn their critical eye and crudeness to the super-agent archetype.

Jimmy’s Bastards is an interesting and enjoyable book to read, but a somewhat conflicting one to review. The writing is remarkable in its ability to manifest fully-realised characters from page one. We are instantly transported to a lived-in universe with its own distinct mythos and lore, even if it might be a little familiar to fans of spy-fiction. Like most great stories, these characters have a rich history together that we are only being offered a small glimpse into. Indeed, the premise of a veteran agent confronting the very real sins of the father only works because we recognise that his notoriety and legend is well-earned. This isn’t the newly-bloodied Bond of Casino Royale, but a seasoned master of pulp espionage. Jimmy has to have to equal parts prestige and infamy if we are to believe that the secret society plotting his demise have a genuine grievance.

Yet, it is in the reveal of those enemies that the pitch kind of goes astray. To go into further detail would be to dwell into spoiler territory, but suffice to say, when you think the absurdity has reached its limit, it accepts that as a challenge. Jimmy may not be the most likable character, he might even be amoral, but there is something compelling about him regardless. There are hints of hidden depths, of an understanding of his place in an absurdist fantasy. Characters like Jimmy keep us with books, but the plot is what drives them forward and allows them to develop. As much as I enjoyed the book, I’m unsure if the dangling plot-point is strong enough to support the kind of arc that sustains a book in a harsh market.

Braun’s interiors are a dynamic delight invoking the pulp sensibilities of Archer and cheesy genre paperbacks. It reflects the characters’ own cartoonish nature, or at least those surface-level elements. Each character exudes the tropes of their fore-bearers whether it be the cocky agent, the femme fatale, maniacal menace, or gadget-obsessed techie. There is a joy to each of the action scenes and character designs that show Braun is well versed in genre conventions. The flow and energy of each of the panel accurately recreates the drive of a Bond in medias res opening-scene.

Jimmy’s Bastards brings spy-fiction back to comics in a comedic and violent subversion of the genre’s core elements. It’s a book with a lot of potential and that’s both its greatest strength and weakness. It will undoubtedly be a thrilling romp either way, but it may read better in trade than it does in single issues. Assuming it stays on track, then this is your book, should you choose to accept it.

New George Romero Zombie Movie Is Coming To Get You

Monkeys Fighting Robots

George Romero Will Present ‘Road of the Dead’!

The king of zombie films is always crafting something new. George A. Romero Presents: Road of the Dead‘ will head to the Fantasia International Film Festival in July. George Romero will write the film with Matt Birman, who will also direct the project.

Frontières, the Fantasia International Film Festival’s annual film co-production market, announced the zombie film in their first wave of projects for the 9th edition. The genre film festival has played host to big premieres of ‘Red State‘, ‘Curse of Chucky‘, and ‘Final Destination 5‘. Many are expecting this project to be a huge headliner.

“They’re Coming To Get You, Barbara”

It’s a shame that George Romero isn’t returning to the director’s chair for this installment but maybe it’s for the best as his recent entries didn’t do well. The last film Romero directed for the long-running ‘Dead’ franchise is ‘Survival of the Dead‘, sitting at 30% on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. Keeping zombie movies alive is something important to George Romero so passing the torch to a younger director is smart.

Road of the Dead‘ was originally pitched about 10 years ago by director Matt Birman. The story is said to be set on an island where zombie prisoners race cars in a modern-day Coliseum for the entertainment of wealthy humans. Birman describes the project as ‘Road Warrior‘ meets ‘Rollerball‘ but it sounds more like ‘Death Race 2000‘. The two men have worked together in the past as Birman served as a second unit director for the last 3 Romero films. The future of the franchise is in very capable hands.

The Fantasia International Film Festival takes place from July 20th through July 23rd.
