Review: ‘Batman’ #29 Serves Up An Excellent Meal Of The Surreal

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Desperate to end the bloodshed between the Joker and the Riddler, Bruce Wayne (NOT Batman) makes a dangerous play. He invites the two warring villains and their allies to Wayne Manor to sit down over a full-on seven-course meal. His plan, it seems, is to hopefully end their fighting. But as is everything with Batman, nothing is what it seems. And something much more than a meal just might be being served.Batman #29

‘The War of Jokes and Riddles’ has been a very deliberately paced story; full of odd time jumps, interludes, and narration. So it’s fitting thematically and narratively that we are probably at what is the half-way mark and we have a literal sit down dinner that brings all the major players together. It’s a daring, striking and surreal trick that pays off immensely. It makes for one of the weirdest (on an almost Grant Morrison level) Batman issues of Tom King’s, and really anyone’s, run. And I mean that as a compliment.

Writing

Tom King continues to write the hell out of this title. And with this storyline, he has really crafted something unique. The arc itself has been experimental in execution, but on top of that, each chapter carries that experiment further in different directions. This ‘dinner issue’ (as I have chosen to call it) is one of the most surreal and tense comics I have read from a mainstream publisher. It could have easily fallen apart and into silliness, but King’s pacing keeps it tens. His use of grid panel lay outs is excellent here. Using each course of the meal as a ‘chapter’ within a chapter also adds to the already bubbling tension.

His characterization of Joker, Riddler and Bruce Wayne is also fantastic. The Joker here is a creature of true menace and insanity. We’re used to seeing Joker as a cackling madman (which is great of course) but there is an undeniable frightening quality to a Joker who doesn’t smile or laugh, and who can coldly discuss how he would simply choke Batman as he sits over a dinner plate (his fantasy of this is the only time we actually see Joker smiling, which hits hard). Riddler too is unique, coming off as a cold, methodical serial killer who just knows he probably is the smartest guy in the room (perhaps not this dining room, but still…). And then there is Bruce Wayne. As readers we know he is Batman, but to the everyone else he is a desperate citizen of a city in peril. But this actually IS a young, desperate Batman, so we are seeing an aspect of Bruce rarely seen but always welcome; human, emotional and unmasked. This is a multi-layered story arc, and this chapter is a microcosm of that.

Art

Mikel Janin, Hugo Petrus and June Chung have crafted a gorgeous book with drawings of food that border on ‘food porn’. The art is elegant and fancy, befitting the scene and theme. Everything is clean, crisp and has an element of stillness. Janin is also one of the best at capturing ‘acting’ in his characters, giving them subtle expressions that don’t rely on exaggeration to get emotions across. His Joker has become my favorite, second only to Brian Bolland’s in The Killing Joke (which seems to be an influence here). The coloring and inks add weight to the pencils, creating an intimate atmosphere that feels like you’re sitting at this incredibly awkward and scary dinner. Some of these panels are worthy of being prints. That’s how good this book looks. Plus we get to see almost all of Batman’s rogues’ gallery again drawn by this team, which is always a treat.

The lettering also deserves a mention, as each person’s dialog, including Batman’s narration, is rendered in distinct styles that create true voices.

Conclusion

This is absolutely my favorite issue of ‘The War of Jokes and Riddles’ so far. It’s a surreal sequence that feels almost Lynchian in its bizarreness and mood, working almost like the strangest short Batman film you will ever see. Like the great issue with Swamp Thing, this is one that will be remembered and collected whenever ‘Best of Batman’ stories are compiled. So sit down and devour it now.

Guys… Gizmo Might Die in ‘Gremlins 3’ According to Chris Columbus

Monkeys Fighting Robots

After 27 years since cinemas were graced with Gremlins 2: The New Batch, talk of a Gremlins 3 is real and original screenwriter Chris Columbus has apparently written a script — and it’s going to be “twisted and dark.”

“I’m really proud of the script,” Columbus said in a Slash Film interview. “It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we’ll see. It’s always a budgetary conversation when we’re going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we’ll see that movie soon.”

Columbus said his script asks a question which have been on many fans’ minds since the original Gremlins: if all the gremlins originated from getting Gizmo wet and feeding the mogwai after midnight, should Gizmo be killed off?

“I think it probably is a good idea to be honest with you,” Columbus said. “Too many people are dying.”

While this may disturb fans of the fluffy critter, there is some good news about this potential sequel/reboot. Despite significant advancements, the Gremlins themselves will still be brought to life as puppets, and not with CGI.

“Oh, without a doubt, minimal CGI,” Columbus said. “CGI will enable us to remove wires and make the puppeteers lives a little easier. It was brutal. It was like a marathon every night for those guys. In the bar scene alone there were 18 or 20 people behind the bar. No one had any space to move. It was just hellish for those guys so CGI will simplify that a little bit, but it’s all puppets.”

So, good news, we may be getting the Gremlins sequel we deserve after nearly three decades. Not so good news – things may take an extremely dark turn.

With ‘Justice League’ Nearing, Here’s a Cheat Sheet to All Things DCEU

Need A Refresher Before Justice League? Check This Out!

It’s been a winding road to the November release of Justice League. The team-up event from the DC Extended Universe promises one of the biggest moments in superhero history. Even with only four movies before this film, there’s a lot of ground to cover.

Below is a break down of all things DCEU and Justice League as we head into the release. You will find a history of the DC Extended Universe, a look into each major character, and some news of what will happen in the movie.

Previous DCEU Films

Man of Steel:

Justice League

The most recent DC cinematic universe began with 2013’s Man of Steel. Filmmaker Zack Snyder reinvented Superman; stripping back the “boy scout” mentality and replacing it with a more introspective take on the hero. It tore the fan base apart as some welcomed the change, while others grabbed their pitchforks.

While Man of Steel has the label as the first film in this series, it serves mostly as a solo origin story for Superman. There are some easter eggs for things to come, but nothing major happens to distract from this being a real look at Superman. Even the villains being Zod and Faora works to show the struggles of what Superman’s life on Earth is. In hindsight, every decision in this movie led into the next. Especially the killing of Zod; that moment weighs in on him during the entirety of Batman v Superman.

Batman v Superman

Justice League

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is the most polarizing superhero film in the last decade. If the first entry divided fans, this built a wall in-between them. Taking the finale of Man of Steel and adding Bruce Wayne’s point of view, Batman v Superman is the real launching pad for the DC Extended Universe. Much to the dismay of some fans, there is a lot of world building happening and introduces things that wouldn’t pay off until later films. It also continued the radical alternative takes on the DC characters, examples being Jessie Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor and a more brutal Batman.

When looking at how these movies will affect the DCEU and Justice League, Batman v Superman is considered as the source of everything. Not only did it give minor introductions of all of the League members, but Justice League’s story directly follows this. Also, the film includes a “Knightmare” sequence that plays into Justice League. That dream/premonition gave viewers the first look at a militant Superman and Parademons.

Suicide Squad:

Justice League

Unlike other films in the DCEU, Suicide Squad will most likely not play a significant role in the upcoming movie. David Ayer’s take on the criminal gang was plagued with production drama and a critical bashing; it’s hard being the film to follow Batman v Superman. Much of the original cut got lost in the shuffle, and it felt like a half-heartened attempt at both a standalone film and as a world-building event.

Suicide Squad did give fans another look at The Flash and some more Batman scenes, but nothing of real substance. It’s also apparent that there isn’t room for any more characters in an already character-filled Justice League movie.

Wonder Woman:

Justice League

Bow down to the queen. Wonder Woman is the movie that saved the public perception of the DC Extended Universe. Not only is the film a powerful experience, but it has a sleek style of filmmaking. Patty Jenkins took on the task of bringing this Amazonian to screen after 75 years and swing the favor back over to the brand. She did just that when the film opened to record-breaking numbers and ranks highly on movie review aggregator sites.

With the Wonder Woman solo film set in the past, there wasn’t a lot of chances to dive into the current DCEU timeline. That doesn’t mean it won’t connect to Justice League at all. In multiple trailers for the film, you can see the Amazons battling it out with Parademons. The San Diego Comic-Con trailer also revealed that a Mother Box is on Themyscira, the home of Wonder Woman.

The Characters

Batman:

Justice League

Batman is the face that runs the place. Without Bruce Wayne and his alter ego Batman, the entire DC film universe wouldn’t exist. That goes beyond just the DCEU; Batman is the most prolific character from the brand. Ben Affleck took on the role of the Caped Crusader to some hate initially but quickly turned fans around with a stellar performance.

Yes, this version of Batman is grisly. His dark side even cost Superman’s his life in the long run, even if Batman eventually saw the error in his ways. Now with Justice League, Bruce Wayne is using his superhero skills to team up, rather than push people away. The character arc is polarizing. Seeing the very worst to build to the hero we know drove fans mad, but this film hopes to be the perfect pay off.

Wonder Woman:

Justice League

If she wasn’t a big part of the movie before, the success of Wonder Woman launched her to the forefront of Justice League. Our Amazonian warrior won fans and critics over with her single film earlier this year, and DCEU fans are hoping that love translates to this. Her role as a founding member of the League is exciting; she’s seemingly replacing Superman’s founding role due to his death. But her story goes beyond just uniting the team!

With a war coming to her island of Themyscira, this marks the return to her homeland. The question is how the island will look when she gets there? Will the villain Steppenwolf slaughter the Amazons? This moment will surely drive Wonder Woman over-the-edge. Thankfully she has her newly less-cynical friend Bruce Wayne to keep her focused.

The Flash:

Justice League

Other than the “DC Holy Trinity,” The Flash is the most recognizable character from the brand. His hit-show on The CW makes him a household name, and Justice League’s Flash is labeled a scene-stealer in the trailers. While Grant Gustin is beloved on the television show, actor Ezra Miller is already a fan-favorite.

Little is known about the movie version of the character. Some of the trailers did give a glimpse at Barry with his imprisoned father and that he’s a loner, but that’s about it. Expect everything in Justice League to lead us to his solo film; the iconic DC event named Flashpoint. The Flash could attempt to turn back time in the movie and trigger something.

Aquaman:

Justice League

Somehow, Jason Momoa turned Aquaman into the bad-ass we see before us. The character sadly saw years of ridicule with a campy version of Super Friends and later becoming a meme. Comics eventually rebranded him with a longer hair & hook for a hand. It helped, but nothing works quite like seeing Jason Momoa as Arther Curry.

With Batman, Wonder Woman, and The Flash do not doubt Aquaman’s ability to steal the movie. Justice League has tons of characters, but few have this kind of appeal. This role is the type that men want to be him and women want to be with him. There is more to Aquaman than good looks though. His story as Atlantis King is interesting and we could see a minor origin story for the character. His water-bending wife Mera will appear as well.

Cyborg:

Justice League

Victor “Cyborg” Stone started as a Teen Titan, and now he’s here. Cyborg is one of the newest characters to mainstream audiences. That will likely change with a fun performance and a story that ties deep into world building. Justice League follows the minor introduction in Batman v Superman that showed Silas Stone, Cyborg’s dad, creating him after an accident. There is resentment there and is a topic in the movie.

Besides some creation drama, there is also the fact that Cyborg is made-up of a Mother Box. A Mother Box is an object in DC mythos that is synonymous to Darkseid and his Parademons. This connection to the villains of Justice League adds an interesting dynamic. How much of this machine will take over the remaining man side?

Steppenwolf:

Justice League

Steppenwolf is the first step in the introduction of DC’s New Gods. Once the parademons made their appearance in Batman v Superman, Darkseid and the New Gods was evident. Thankfully they didn’t jump right in with the big bad and send this troubled villain. The odds of him making it out of this movie alive are slim, but he’ll be impactful.

Ciarán Hinds is taking on the role of Steppenwolf using motion-capture. He spoke about calling his friend Liam Neeson for advice on doing this type of performance. An esteemed actor diving into a unique role like this will be thrilling to see.

What Will Happen In ‘Justice League?’

Let’s address the Kryptonian elephant in the room. Yes, we all know Superman is returning from the dead in Justice League. The real mystery isn’t if, but how will he return? Odds are it will be a heroic return to save the day. That’s something some fans are begging for after a Superman they didn’t recognize. Don’t be surprised if it does get darker though, much like the “mullet Jesus” Superman of the 90’s.

After reshoots that are rumored to be fairly extensive, the tone of the film will be uneven. With Batman v Superman seeing criticism for being “too dark,” these newer scenes will introduce a lighter toner and something more hopeful (like Wonder Woman). Rumored reports say that Cyborg was a major focus in the reshoots, in an attempt to make him more like his comic-book counterpart. You can also expect a more lighthearted tone sprinkled throughout as Zack Snyder’s plan was to make this lighter than his grim previous entries. With the late addition of director Joss Whedon, the tone will be even lighter than originally intended.

Netflix: Season Two Of The ‘Ozark’ Is Coming For You

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Netflix announced Tuesday afternoon, the streaming company has renewed the series ‘Ozark’ for Season 2 and ordered 10 new episodes.

The first season received mixed reviews from Rotten Tomatoes and sits at a 65%, but our own Matthew Sardo enjoyed the brutally honest family dynamic, mixed with redneck and drug running drama. The cliffhanger alone at the end of season one is enough reason to renew the series.

Jason Bateman directed four episodes of the series created by Bill Dubuque and Mark Williams.

About the ‘Ozark’:
A Chicago financial advisor, who has been quietly laundering money for a drug kingpin, must quickly uproot his family and move the operation to The Ozarks, after his partner is caught cheating the business. There, he bumps heads with both a local drug dealer whose business he inadvertently interrupts, and a clan of ruffians, led by their 19-year-old niece, who want his money, all the while avoiding the eye of a tenacious FBI agent. He must complete his laundering, to save the life of his family, as they struggle to find their own path in this seemingly foreign way of life.

The series stars Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, Sofia Hublitz, Skylar Gaertner, Julia Garner, Jordana Spiro, Jason Butler Harner, Esai Morales, Peter Mullan, and Lisa Emery.

Look for season two of ‘Ozark’ in the summer of 2018.

Tim Seeley Joins With AfterShock Comics To Bring You ‘Brilliant Trash’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Creator Tim Seeley has dipped his pen into all genres in our beloved comic book medium. Starting with the cult horror comic Hack/Slash, Seeley cut himself a career that included stints on the DCU’s Grayson, Revival from Image and even a Lost Boys sequel comic for DC/Vertigo. The writer now teams up with artist Priscilla Petraites and AfterShock comics to bring you a post-apocalyptic superhero tale of epic proportions.

Tim Seeley had the following to say:

BRILLIANT TRASH is the kind of sci-fi we don’t see that often in comics. It’s not a far off planet or the distant future. There are no ships and no aliens.  It’s the story of the ‘word of tomorrow,’ torn directly from the headlines, about an America that might be waiting for us. It’s cautionary, but it’s also action packed and fun.. It’s a cyberpunk superhero story pulling inspiration from William Gibson, Robocop and the social media- fake news-superhero-obsessed world we live in

He added:

I think the art by Priscilla Petraites and Marco Lesko will really grab people. This is her first US work, and she’s doing really beautiful work. The world that Brilliant Trash takes place in is really well established visually…it’s a dirtier, messier, more visually polluted version of our own, and we get to see our lead, Kennedy Avis running her ass off through its grimy underbelly. BT is a fusion of a lot of genres because our own world is quickly becoming a crazy ass story in its own right.

Brilliant Trash sounds great and very much the kind of story that seems to be very relevant to our time. Seeley also knows how to craft a well paced, fun read. And AfterShock has been putting out quality books for a while now.

Check out the official solicitation below, along with some interior pages. And as always comment and discuss below! Brilliant Trash

Adam Sandler Sings in First Teaser for Noah Baumbach’s ‘The Meyerowitz Stories’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Adam Sandler is the most maddening actor in the history of the medium, at least in my opinion. Because, while he farts away his career with horrible garbage over and over again, every once in a while he shows what he’s capable of. Case in point: The Meyerowitz Stories.

Noah Baumbach’s latest is headed to (surprise!) Netflix, and has gotten tremendous buzz since it debuted at Cannes last spring. This first trailer is set around Sandler singing at a piano, and I am sold.

Check it out:

An estranged family gathers together in New York for an event celebrating the artistic work of their father.

The full title is The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected), and it looks to tackle Baumbach’s thematics of artistic family disfunction, which he all but perfected in The Squid and The Whale. The rest of his filmography is hit or miss with me, but all of his work is worth checking out regardless.

The Meyerowitz Stories stars Dustin Hoffman, Ben Stiller, and Emma Thompson alongside the rare “engaged” Adam Sandler. Also, Randy Newman is scoring the film, which is a nice little touch. It will screen at the New York Film Festival and head to Netflix October 13.

Trailer: Jessica Chastain Runs Underground Poker in ‘Molly’s Game’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Jessica Chastain runs a far-reaching underground poker circuit in Molly’s Game, the new directorial debut from prolific rat-a-tat screenwriter Aaron Sorkin. The film’s first trailer, aside from showing off an incredible cast, looks to have Sorkin’s typical rapid fire high-tone dialogue and… kind of a generic story?

Check it out:

MOLLY’S GAME is the true story of Molly Bloom a beautiful, young, Olympic-class skier who ran the world’s most exclusive high-stakes poker game for a decade before being arrested in the middle of the night by 17 FBI agents wielding automatic weapons. Her players included Hollywood royalty, sports stars, business titans and finally, unbeknownst to her, the Russian mob. Her only ally was her criminal defense lawyer Charlie Jaffey, who learned that there was much more to Molly than the tabloids led us to believe.

The true story angle doesn’t necessarily interest me, but maybe I’m shortchanging this movie based on one meh trailer. Chastain is joined by Idris Elba, Kevin Costner, Michael Cera, Spotlight‘s unsung hero Brian d’Arcy James, and Graham Greene as a judge. It’s a beyond solid cast, I just wish there was something more here.

Molly’s Game will hit theaters November 22, about the time Chastain’s Miss Sloane snuck into multiplexes last year.

The 5 Most Underrated Films of Steven Soderbergh’s Career

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The last four years have been the worst “retirement” for Steven Soderbergh, the idiosyncratic genius behind too many great films (and just as many weird, experimental films) to count. In those four years, after he announced his retirement from filmmaking on the heels of Side Effects, Soderbergh directed every episode of his turn-of-the-century hospital drama The Knick – arguably the best cable series to never get its full due – and the terrific HBO Liberace film Behind the Candelabra. He also produced a half dozen projects, one of which was Magic Mike XXL, which he served as cinematographer (under the common pseudonym Peter Andrews).

Point being, Steven Soderbergh never really retired, and we should all be happy that he’s “officially” backed off that sentiment with this weekend’s Logan Lucky. The notoriously rebellious filmmaker has built a decades-spanning career making whatever sort of film tickled his fancy at any given time, and some of them (Erin Brockovich, Traffic, Ocean’s Eleven) were huge hits. But he’s never been keen on the typical hardline marketing techniques of Hollywood, which is why so many of his films come and go without much time to consider their greatness.

Of all the masters in the industry, Steven Soderbergh has the most substantial catalogue of underrated greatness. Here are the five I feel are sorely in need of a revival among the collective masses…

1The Limey

Soderbergh’s lean revenge drama is a sort of sideways remake of John Boorman’s 1967 thriller Point Blank. It isn’t entirely similar – this time a man seeks revenge for the death of his daughter, not for being double crossed and robbed – but it has the same singleminded drive and determination, thanks to the unfettered performance from Terrence Stamp.

Stamp squares off with old-school cinematic rebel Peter Fonda, further defining The Limey as a throwback film to the urgent, existential revenge thrillers of yesteryear. Soderbergh balances the directness of his characters with a circuitous narrative which seems to double back on itself a few minutes at a time, and a breezy Southern California tone draped over the violence. The Hollywood Hills become a character in its own right, and Stamp’s Wilson (Lee Marvin was simply Walker in Point Blank) has a blast confusing everyone with his Cockney slang. The picture often drifts off into a dreamlike memory state. The Limey was never going to be a huge hit, but it certainly deserves reappraisal.

David Tennant & Michael Sheen To Star In ‘Good Omens’ Amazon Series

Monkeys Fighting Robots

According to Variety, Michael Sheen (Passengers) is slated to play the meticulous angel Aziraphale, while David Tennant (of Doctor Who fame) will play the demon Crowley in the Amazon adaptation of Good Omens.

The miniseries will consist of six one-hour episodes, written by Neil Gaiman.

Written by Neil Gaiman (American Gods) and Terry Pratchett, Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch takes place in 2018 when the Apocalypse is near and Final Judgment is set to descend upon humanity. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, and tempers are flaring. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan — except a somewhat fussy angel, and a fast-living demon are not looking forward to the coming war, and someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

“I first read Good Omens as a teenager and it’s been one of my favorite stories ever since,” Sheen said in a statement to Variety. “To be part of the team entrusted with bringing it alive on screen is a bit of a dream come true to be honest. To work alongside Neil, who I think is one of the greatest storytellers of all time, is incredibly exciting. And, just like the rest of the world, I’m a huge fan of David’s so I relish trying to save it with him.”

“Almost 30 years ago,” explains Gaiman when the series was first announced, “Terry Pratchett and I wrote the funniest novel we could about the end of the world, populated with angels and demons, not to mention an 11-year-old Antichrist… It became many people’s favorite book. Three decades later, it’s going to make it to the screen…  I just wish Sir Terry were alive to see it.”

Good Omens has had a long road to adaptation since being published in 1990. A film, directed by Terry Gilliam, was planned back in 2002 with a rumor that Johnny Depp was cast as Crowley and Robin Williams as Aziraphale.

In 2011, it was reported that a television adaptation may be produced, with Terry Jones (Monty Python) and Gavin Scott (The Mists of Avalon) were in talks to write an adaptation.

Good Omens was finally adapted as a radio drama by BBC Radio 4 in 2014, with Peter Serafinowicz (The Tick) and Mark Heap in the cast.

Are you excited to see Good Omens on the small screen with Sheen and Tennant as the stars? Let us know in the comments!
