Outlander Season 3: All Debts Paid – Mac Dubh’s Escape

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Doing battle with the series premiere of Star Trek: Discovery, the third episode of Outlander’s third season, All Debts Paid, aired on Sunday. Viewers watched as 20th-century events unfolded and brought the narrative ever closer to the events shown in last season’s finale.

We saw Claire graduate from medical school and adjust to her new career. We also saw Brianna graduate and we looked on as Claire and Frank’s marriage fell apart. An expected but serious loss for Team Frank came in this episode: after trying to make a fresh start in England with a new bride, Frank died in a car crash.

The only major event left to happen that will catch viewers up to the season 2 finale is Reverend Wakefield’s death, which happens in 1968 just two years after Frank’s.

In the 18th century, we saw Jamie secure an important ally … for good this time.

Outlander Season 3: All Debts Paid – Shackling Up

Three years have passed since Jamie gave himself up to the English, and he’s been shackled in Ardsmuir Prison the whole while. Changing pseudonyms more often than undergarments, James Fraser AKA Jamie MacTavish AKA Red Jamie AKA the Dunbonnet now goes by Mac Dubh, Gaelic for “son of the black.” In meetings with Ardsmuir’s warden, Jamie acts as an ambassador for the prisoners.

A new warden, though, is being shown the ropes. His name is Lord John Grey, and Outlander fans know that he and Jamie have a history together. Convinced he can work with Jamie to keep Ardsmuir running smoothly, Lord Grey requests Jamie’s help in translating for him.

A man raving about gold was recently found wandering the moors. And since the previous warden mentioned hidden treasure nearby — a wayward shipment of gold meant for Charles Stuart’s coffers — Lord Grey takes an interest in the man’s ravings.

Jamie agrees to translate provided the guards remove his shackles and give a gravely ill Murtagh — his trusted ally is also a prisoner in Ardsmuir — medicine and a blanket. When Jamie meets the raving man, the man says little about gold. Instead, he raves about a white witch and tells Jamie that she seeks a brave MacKenzie. He tells Jamie she will come for him. Jamie honestly reports what he has learned to Lord Grey, confusing as it is.

Outlander Season 3: All Debts Paid – “Piss off!”

Having convinced Lord Grey that the prisoners should get time to hunt and forage around the prison, Jamie makes a clever escape, and gives his captors the slip for three days. Paying Grey back for similarly interrupting him years ago, Jamie, finding the warden alone one day, sneaks up on Grey while he’s taking a whiz. Jamie tells Grey that he has known of his warden’s identity for a while now. And with Grey’s debt of honour discharged after his brother spared Jamie from execution by firing line, Lord Grey is now free to keep the remainder of the vow he made at 16 and take Jamie’s life. Jamie drops his sword and kneels to receive the fatal blow.

Luckily for Jamie, Lord Grey tells him he’s not in the practice of killing unarmed prisoners. A recaptured Jamie continues his post as the prisoners’ ambassador to the warden. Feeling nostalgic, they discuss Claire over dinner. Jamie reveals that the woman whose honour Grey so gallantly defended all those years ago was actually his own wife. Grey congratulates Jamie on a good bit of subterfuge but Jamie praises the younger man’s courage, unafraid to die but unwilling to let his enemy besmirch a young woman’s honour.

Outlander Season 3: All Debts Paid – “Take Your Stinking Paws off Me, You Damn Dirty Lord!”

Everything seems like it’s going well. Jamie even reveals to Grey that the white witch the raving man mentioned is Claire. Grey says that it’s hard to lose someone, and that we grieve some people forever. He tells the Highlander that he is sorry for his loss and lets his hand linger a bit too long on Jamie’s while giving it a more than affectionate pat. Jamie tells Grey he will kill him if he doesn’t remove his hand. The lonely Lord tears up as Jamie makes his abrupt exit.

Shortly after, news comes in that Ardsmuir will be closed. The prisoners, including Murtagh, are to be shipped off to the colonies to live as indentured servants, but Grey takes Jamie somewhere else. Helwater, the estate of Lord Dunsany, will be Jamie’s new home, at least for the time being. Grey vows to check in on Jamie every quarter.

Jamie asks Lord Grey why he would do this for him given that he wouldn’t let Grey have his way with him in the prison. Grey tells the Jacobite that although his debt of honour was repaid by his brother, he needed to clear his own name for himself.

Outlander Season 3: All Debts Paid – Final Thoughts

Jamie seems to be more or less out of the woods, and Black Jack’s having not shown up since his and Jamie’s epic battle at Culloden makes me believe Jamie’s tormentor really is dead this time. That would be too bad since, now that Frank is dead, it’ll mean that viewers won’t get to see the talented Tobias Menzies anymore.

Based on the fact that All Debts Paid is only the third episode of the season and Claire and Brianna have basically caught up to where we left off at the end of season 2, I imagine we’ve got some time traveling to look forward to in the next couple of episodes. The raving man telling Jamie that the white witch is coming for him is also a pretty good indicator of what we have to look forward to. But, when, where, and how will the Frasers reunite? Time will tell.

‘Infamous Iron Man’ Falls Short Ahead Of ‘Marvel Legacy’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

For twelve issues of Infamous Iron Man, Doctor Doom has been parading around in an Iron Man suit trying to atone for his past evils. Some inhabitants of the 616 Universe have been buying into the new Doom. However, one entity that will not stand for a sudden change of heart is Mephisto.

Infamous 12 cvr

***SPOILERS LIE AHEAD***

Infamous Iron Man #12 sees all things sorcery take center stage. Victor Von Doom and Stephen Strange find themselves engaged in battle with the Devil of Marvel Comics, Mephisto.

The first chunk of this issue is a freeze frame monologue by Mephisto, explaining his revenge plot against Doom. It’s a nice visual but overstays it’s welcome almost immediately through the unnecessary rambling Bendis wrote. I don’t believe for a second that Mephisto absorbs pop culture enough to make a Kill Bill Vol. 2 reference.

Infamous 12 mephisto

It doesn’t get any better from there, jumping from scene to scene in what is ultimately a mess. This series seems to have come to an abrupt halt. Everything that was clicking so well went completely out the window without any payoff whatsoever. Even Victor’s sendoff to Ben Grimm felt insincere, quickly half-tying up a loose end.

From Mephisto’s confusing revenge, through a quick Hydra island takeover, to an underwhelming pregnancy reveal. There are way too many moments in this issue that will make you say “what?” In the worst possible way.

What happened? Infamous Iron Man was going so smoothly. It was one of the strongest Marvel titles available and the closest thing to Fantastic Four that we were getting. All of a sudden with issue twelve, Bendis seemingly threw in the towel as if he didn’t know Legacy was happening.

Despite the messy script, Alex Maleev and Matt Hollingsworth still deliver top notch art. Maleev has drawn the hell out of this book, capturing the weird essence of this era for both Doom and Iron Man comics in spectacular fashion. With sorcery being the focus of this issue, there are massive layouts and spreads with beautifully colored action sequences.

This is easily the weakest issue in what has been a dynamite series. The blame could easily be Marvel’s agenda and not Brian Michael Bendis, but it certainly doesn’t soil the reputation built by the rest of the series. Infamous Iron Man is still a comic book to be celebrated from this era of Marvel history.

Michelle Williams In Talks To Join 2018 ‘Venom’ Film

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Michelle Williams is in talks to join Sony’s Venom movie, Variety reports.

The actress is said to play a lawyer who is also Tom Hardy’s love interest in the film.

Williams would join a cast we really don’t know much about. Besides Hardy, the only other actor cast in the film is Riz Ahmed, and even he hasn’t been officially confirmed for the role.

Venom takes place in a seperate universe from the Marvel cinematic universe, and will be directed by Ruben Fleischer. Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner are set to pen the the script.

Venom will hit theaters on October 5, 2018. What do you make of the film’s cast of talent, writers, and director so far? Comment below, let us know.

James Cameron Talks ‘Terminator’ Reboot, Says 3-5 Were “Like a Bad Dream”

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In between making Avatar sequels nobody wants, James Cameron continues to pump up this new Terminator reboot nobody wants. Arnold Schwarzenegger is back, because of course, and Linda Hamilton is back, which has some people excited.

But, I mean, c’mon…

Cameron spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about how this new Terminator will pick up where T:2 left off, much like Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns did. Except this franchise has such a ridiculous time loop issue with a 70-year old Schwarzenegger returning as the T-101. Anyway, Cameron also called the third, fourth, and fifth films a bad dream:

“This is a continuation of the story from ‘Terminator 1’ and ‘Terminator 2,’… “And we’re pretending the other films were a bad dream. Or an alternate timeline, which is permissible in our multi-verse.”

So the moral of this story is, if you paint yourself into an inescapable corner in this Terminator franchise, just create another time line! Or now, bad dreams I suppose? This is going to be a complete mess, isn’t it?

Cameron isn’t directing because of all those Avatar movies. Deadpool director Tim Miller will take over while Cameron produces, so maybe that’s enough to get you interested. I’ll stay over here in this highly skeptical timeline. Bring Eddie Furlong back into the fold and we can talk.

Review: ‘Mother Panic’ #11 Offers Quiet (And Tenderness) Before The Storm

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Violet finally confronts Jane, another survivor of the horrors of ‘Gather House’. The two women share an intense and revealing conversation where both women admit that they are still reeling from the torture, both physical and emotional, that they suffered. We also finally see the night where ‘Gather House’ was burned to the ground. It all adds up to more fuel for Violet, who vows even more strongly now to destroy anyone associated with the house. But can Jane be trusted? Meanwhile, villain and art serial killer Gala comes ever closer to finding out who Mother Panic is, but just who is helping her out? And what’s up with Otis, The RatCatcher?

Writing

Jody Houser is doing something interesting with this book, and this issue proves it. This book at its core is about living through and surviving abuse and trauma. I mean, yeah, it’s a Gotham set vigilante book, and in a way, ALL Gotham vigilantes are trauma survivors. But Houser really gets into the emotion and psychology of it, specifically in this chapter. The rooftop conversation in this issue between Violet and Jane is a great example of dialogue that serves up so much vital character information without resorting to much exposition. Violet’s measured responses conflict with the thoughts we are privy to as readers, and we finally see she may be on a cold mission of revenge, but she is also damaged and in much need of connection with someone.

Mother Panic #11
“Mother Panic #11

Gala continues to be a creepy and effective villain.  Her scenes are disturbing and leave you wanting to learn more about what makes her do what she does. Having the art ‘gimmick’ puts her in line with the Gotham Rogues, but her connection to high society adds a good twist.

And I can’t end this review without mentioning Otis, The Ratcatcher. This obscure character is quickly becoming one of my favorites, as Houser portrays his relationship with his rats as pretty tender. Otis also just seems to be a nice, misunderstood weirdo, which is perfect for this book (and Young Animal).

However, everything ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, and I can only gather (ha!) that the shit is about to hit the fan in this book, and Violet’s quest for revenge is going to bring all these things together.

Mother Panic #11
Mother Panic #11

Art

The pencils, inks, and colors on this book come together extremely well. This issue is drawn by Shawn Crystal, who has alternated arcs with series co-creator (and cover artist), Tommy Lee Edwards. Crystal draws a distinctly in more stylized linework that really lends’s itself well to the designs of Violet’s Mother Panic suit (I LOVE the huge gauntlets/gloves). The use of thick outlines also adds weight to the pages.  I also love the way he draws faces and hair. A lot of expression and mood is conveyed in the character heads and expressions.

Jean-Francois Beaulieu’s colors add an incredible amount of mood, especially when juxtaposed with Violet’s crisp, stark white costume design. There are a lot of blue hues and dark shadows. All this creates a great atmosphere.

Mother Panic #11
Mother Panic #11

Conclusion

We are almost at the one-year mark for this title, and it’s still going strong. Of all the Young Animal books, Mother Panic is the most accessible and superhero-friendly. Get on this book as it ends its first twelve issues, and let’s hope for at least twelve more.

Stop What You’re Doing and Watch Natalie Portman in Alex Garland’s ‘Annihilation’ Trailer

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Alex Garland, the keen eye behind Ex Machina, is traversing complex science-fiction waters once again with Annihilation. The film is based on the first of Jeff VanderMeer’s “Southern Reach” Trilogy of books, and this trailer is probably the best thing you’ll see all day.

Check this out, and be amazed:

Here is an extensive synopsis of the book to give you an idea of what you’re dealing with. Garland’s film will probably be a bit different:

Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; the second expedition ended in mass suicide; the third expedition in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another. The members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within weeks, all had died of cancer. In Annihilation, the first volume of Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach trilogy,

we join the twelfth expedition.
The group is made up of four women: an anthropologist; a surveyor; a psychologist, the de facto leader; and our narrator, a biologist. Their mission is to map the terrain, record all observations of their surroundings and of one another, and, above all, avoid being contaminated by Area X itself.

They arrive expecting the unexpected, and Area X delivers―they discover a massive topographic anomaly and life forms that surpass understanding―but it’s the surprises that came across the border with them and the secrets the expedition members are keeping from one another that change everything.

This looks pretty damn amazing any way you slice it. Natalie Portman is just the tip of the iceberg with this cast: Oscar Isaac, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, and Tessa Thompson.

Annihilation will be here February 23 next year. Plan accordingly.

The Second Trailer for ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’ is Here to Disturb You

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The Killing of a Sacred Deer is Yorgos Lanthimos’s upcoming super-uncomfortable psychological thriller, and this second trailer is even more unnerving than the first.

Things are definitely spiraling out of control for Colin Farrell. Check it out:

Dr. Steven Murphy (Colin Farrell) is a renowned cardiovascular surgeon presiding over a spotless household with his ophthalmologist wife Anna (Nicole Kidman) and their two exemplary children, 12-year-old Bob (Sunny Suljian) and 14-year-old Kim (Raffey Cassidy). Lurking at the margins of his idyllic suburban existence is Martin (Barry Keoghan), a fatherless teen who Steven has covertly taken under his wing. As Martin begins insinuating himself into the family’s life in ever-more unsettling displays, the full scope of his intent becomes menacingly clear when he confronts Steven with a long-forgotten transgression that will shatter the Murphy family’s domestic bliss.

Lanthimos has impressed with Dogtooth and The Lobster, and The Killing of a Sacred Deer feels on brand for sure. This is getting terrific reviews in the festival circuit, and might divide audiences much like mother! did earlier this month.

Colin Farrell stars with Nicole Kidman, Barry Keoghan as the Creepy AF kid, and Alicia Silverstone (!). It opens in limited release October 20 and will expand the following weekend. Count me in.
