‘Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice’ Has Official Synopsis

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Expect tidbits surrounding Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice to leak out from time to time all the way to March 2016. Today, we have an official synopsis of the film, describing what most can figure out from the teaser trailer.

The synopsis, according to the report on Collider, has been released ahead of the Las Vegas Licensing Expo, which starts tomorrow:

“Fearing the actions of a god-like super hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs.  And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.”

Most of these details can be figured out from the less-than-subtle teaser trailer. The only thing we are waiting on here is a confirmation of the “new threat.”

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters in March 2016.

James Cameron’s Endorsement of ‘Terminator Genisys’ Reeks Of Desperation

Monkeys Fighting Robots

We are still a few weeks away from the release of the fifth Terminator film, Terminator Genisys, and it seems the studio and PR department is already in spin control. The trailers have gotten progressively more convoluted, increasingly spoilerific, and no matter how much nonsense they throw into these previews, nothing seems to be helping the negative buzz surrounding what looks like a DOA tentpole for Paramount.

Time to bring in James Cameron.

The latest trailer, or featurette, for Terminator Genisys features Cameron endorsing the film and calling it the “third Terminator movie,” therein trying to erase Rise of The Machines and Salvation from our collective memories. Nice try, Cameron.

Here is the Terminator Genisys featurette:

So many things stick out here. At first, Cameron seems flattered that Terminator Genisys is mimicking his films, then he goes into his interpretation of characters like Sarah Connor. His interpretation. Then, after calling this one the third Terminator film, he goes on to say “if you like the Terminator movies, you’ll like this one.” Yeah, except maybe half of the existing films, right?

Cameron also confirms that the trailers have ruined what could have been a nice surprise, the fact that John Connor is a bad guy. The hero of three of the first four films is now a villain, and that’s just okay I guess?

If James Cameron wants to endorse Terminator Genisys, that’s fine. I still don’t buy it. There can be all sorts of motivations for Cameron doing this PR plug for a movie in which he has no involvement, but let’s not get into conspiracy theories. Let’s just point out the fact that Terminator Genysis basically erases not only the last two films, but the entire story told in the first two classics. “Hey, remember Terminator and Terminator 2? Yeah, those never happened.” What?!

The synopsis for Terminator Genisys does nothing to clear up this mess either. Maybe the biggest surprise of the summer will be the fact that Terminator Genisys is a good movie, and it certainly has potential to be entertaining in the least. But I have never had less confidence in a film going in, and this endorsement feels less like praise and more like a desperate attempt to remind everyone who made the first two superior films in the first place.

Sense8 – Episode 1 Review (Wachowskis Return)

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Remember The Matrix? It was alright, right? I mean it was pretty revolutionary in terms of changing the way we can look at action movies. It gave action movies the potential to be more than  just a barrage of bullets. Action movies could now be thought-provoking and engaging on a cerebral level. And the Wachowski Brothers are who we can thank for, if not starting that revolution, letting it catch fire at the dawn of the new millennium.

The Matrix

And here we are a little over fifteen years later and the W. Bros are back again trying to pick up after their critical and financial failure Jupiter Ascending (Actually lets face it, most of their stuff since Matrix has been meh at best). Now I’m gonna be honest, I like most of the story ideas that these guys present. Maybe because its my history of watching so much Anime that the plot lines and pacing are so easy for me to digest. I mean I don’t know anyone who follows these guys who wouldn’t admit that they basically make live-action anime. And of course that’s what Sense8 gives off (at least in the first episode).

Now I’m gonna give them some credit because having eight main character that all don’t interact with each other seems really hard. The whole first episode could barely have anything to do with the plot because it’s too busy making sure we know these characters, some of which we only get like two minutes with. So already they’ve kind of shot themselves in the foot to begin with. Not to mention, knowing the W. Bros, this plot is going to be convoluted as fuck, so they’ll need to get to explaining it ASAP. Anyway like I said there are eight character and since basically ninety percent of this 1st episode is character introduction, their Bio’s seem like a good place to start.

Courtesy of  the Wikipedia Entry

  • Capheus Van Damme: A compassionate Matatu van driver in Nairobi with a strong sense of justice who is desperately trying to earn money to buy medicine for his mother, who is suffering from AID’s.
  •  Sun Bak: Daughter of a powerful Seoul businessman and burgeoning star in the underground kickboxing world
  • Nomi Marks: A lesbian trans woman and hacktivist living in San Francisco.
  • Kala Dandekar: A pharmacist and devout hindu in Mumbai engaged to marry a man she does not love.
  • Riley Blue: An Icelandic DJ with a troubled past that made her run away to London.
  • Wolfgang Bogdanow: A Berlin locksmith and safe-cracker, who has unresolved issues with his late father and participates in organized crime.
  • Lito Rodriguez: A closeted gay Spanish tele nova actor living in Mexico City.
  • Will Gorski: A Chicago cop haunted by an unsolved murder from his childhood.

Sense8 Cast

So if the description of the characters wasn’t enough to tip you off. Then by the picture you can clearly tell that they are casting a wide net hoping to hit every demographic possible. Which there’s nothing wrong with. But again, some may see it as just pandering, and so far that’s the way it seems to me. But it could change. I just find it a little suspicious that there is every race in this show. Diversity for the sake of diversity just seems to put me off. Please don’t take this the wrong way, I’m not racist.

Toy Story Plot

Oh yes the plot! Remember I hinted at that a few paragraphs ago. Well somewhere in this equal opportunity mess, there is indeed a plot. And it’s probably the main reason anyone is talking about this show, it sure was the only reason it caught my attention. So these characters are all the same age and at the beginning of the show all see the same woman appear in front of them. She then proceeds to kill herself, which is shown in more detail in the cold-open of the show. And bam! Now these characters are connected by some force that allows them to randomly experience the same things that another person of the group is feeling. (Yes! Finally a show that portrays what it feels like to be a young teenager on Tumblr. I guess they weren’t lying when they said Jonny Depp is living inside there head). This continues to happen all throughout the character intros and every time it happens, it reminds me why I was so interested in the first place. Seeing people’s lives being changed by this unexplainable force that has crashed into their lives and how they deal with it. It was a good taste of what the show may turn into. And I’m willing to drudge through a slew of, for the most part, uninteresting characters to get more of that.

Hopefully in future episodes they can get some of these characters together because I don’t know how long I can care about these people individually. And since they got most of the characters intros out-of-the-way, I foresee them getting right into the story next episode. But overall I am still very interested in this series, and will continue to give updates as I watch the episodes. I know the series is up in its entirety on Netflix, but I don’t feel I would do the show justice if I just binged it. At the least each episode deserves a little time to dwell on. So I’ll probably post episode reviews every other day, or something like that.

Also I am very interested in what you think about this show if you have seen it (just please no spoilers). I feel that shows like this are meant to be talked about and that’s where they shine. So please comment, especially if you have a different opinion to my own.

What If Jake Gyllenhaal Had Become Spider-Man?

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Once upon a time, Jake Gyllenhaal was almost Peter Parker. No, not before Tobey Maguire took the role in Sam Raimi’s original, charmingly dated 2001 Spider-Man. Gyllenhaal was one bad back away from taking over the role as the webslinger; he was the stand-by for Maguire, who was suffering some serious lower back issues during pre-production. Had Maguire not been able to go, Gyllenhaal would have stepped in. Thankfully, Maguire was able to carry on, but what if?

What if, out of nowhere, Spider-Man 2 starred Jake Gyllenhaal instead of Tobey Maguire? Switching the stars of a franchise can spell doom for said franchise nine times out of ten (I’m looking at you, Speed 2). Marvel films have become teflon in recent years, impervious to bad press, but in the early 2000s the empire was still being built in Hollywood. Despite the fact that Jake Gyllenhaal is a widely respected actor, even in 2004, changing the face of a film franchise after only one movie would have disrupted the continuity to the point where the film may have failed at the box office. And just think, the best Spider-Man movie we have gotten thus far might have been hard to watch objectively, without seeing Jake Gyllenhaal in every scene and think, “yeah, it’s not Maguire.” The distraction of such an epic upheaval would have been too much to overcome.

Spider-Man 2

Not only would a reboot of the Spider-Man franchise been a foregone conclusion, but a reboot may have happened much sooner.

Then again, if Gyllenhaal took over the role, we may not have had to sit through Spider-Man 3.

And what would have become of these two actors and their subsequent careers? The superhero film is a blessing and a curse for many actors not named Christian Bale, and perhaps Gyllenhaal wouldn’t have turned in some of his more brilliant performances in the upcoming years. Just one year after Spidey 2, Gyllenhaal earned a well-deserved Oscar nomination for his role in the tragic, heartbreaking Brokeback Mountain. While he did scuffle through films like Proof, Prince of Persia, and Love & Other Drugs, Gyllenhaal turned in great performances in Jarhead, Brothers (co-starring Maguire), and Zodiac.

Let’s stop there, before we get to Gyllenhaal’s recent run. Would Spider-Man ever have gotten a role in Zodiac? I content he would not, at least not in 2007, the same year Spider-Man 3 came out. Gyllenhaal would have definitely had a scheduling conflict, and he is the heart and soul of what is arguably David Fincher’s most mature, complete film to date.

Southpaw

Maguire did get through his back problems and complete Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, and then sort of disappeared after that turned out to be a disaster. Maguire’s star lost some shine it seemed, or perhaps he took some time off to separate himself from the Peter Parker albatross. Whatever the case, while Maguire was off the grid for the most part, Gyllenhaal has blossomed into one of the best actors working today. That is without a doubt. His performance as a quirky, tortured detective in Prisoners stole the film from Hugh Jackman in my opinion, and the fact that his wiry, disturbed turn in last year’s Nightcrawler missed an Oscar nomination is criminal. Now, with the rave reviews and hot anticipation for his boxing film Southpaw pouring in, perhaps Jake Gyllenhaal is in line for another flirtation with Oscar.

Pawn Sacrifice

Tobey Maguire, in the meantime, has finally resurfaced in Pawn Sacrifice, the drama surrounding chess master Bobby Fischer. While Maguire looks solid in the trailer, it’s been a while since anyone has considered Tobey Maguire one of the best of his generation. Perhaps if he hadn’t fixed his back, and maybe if he hadn’t reprised his role in 2004’s Spider-Man 2, Gyllenhaal would have suffered the wrath of Spider-Man 3 and disappeared for a few years.

James Cameron Endorses ‘Genisys’ As Terminator 3

Monkeys Fighting Robots

“In my mind I think of [Genisys] as the third film,” said James Cameron the co-writer and director of Terminator and T2.

Does the testimonial of Cameron create anymore buzz or hype for the Terminator film franchise? The marketing department has already spoiled the plot twist. The fact that John Connor is the villain is a major plot twist and a original idea, but this reveal should have been in the theater not on a YouTube trailer.

When John Connor (Jason Clarke), leader of the human resistance, sends Sgt. Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) and safeguard the future, an unexpected turn of events creates a fractured timeline. Now, Sgt. Reese finds himself in a new and unfamiliar version of the past, where he is faced with unlikely allies, including the Guardian (Arnold Schwarzenegger), dangerous new enemies, and an unexpected new mission: To reset the future…

Terminator Genisys is directed by Alan Taylor and opens in theaters July 1.
