Top 5 Villains For The New Spider-Man Film

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Once again, Spider-Man is coming back to the big screen with an all new cast, production company, and story to tell. Only this time, he’ll be a part of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. We know very little about what’s going to happen with his character, and his next movie. But, we do know that it isn’t an origin story, and we also know that Peter Parker will be in high school. So, it seems that Marvel is might be looking to make a smaller, more personal movie about our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Tom Holland as Spider-Boy- Wait, I mean Man! Spider-Man!

My personal biggest concern with the movie is going to be Spidey’s villain. There have been rumors about Green Goblin coming back. However, Green Goblin has been played out in my opinion, and I’m not interested in seeing recycles of any previous villains. So, this list will not include Electro, Lizard, Rhino, Sandman, Venom, Doctor Octopus, or the aforementioned Green Goblin. This list will have five villains from Spidey’s roster that haven’t really been seen yet. Or at the very least, would be a new challenge for old web head. So without further ado let’s get started with the top five villains for the new Spider-Man movie.

  1. VULTURE
Woah there

Like most of Spider-Man’s animal based villains, Vulture is as silly looking as it gets. However, I feel that his design could be really cool if done right. And his back story is actually fairly interesting. Adrian Toomes (The Vulture) was an electronic engineer who got screwed over by an embezzling business partner. Toomes designs a flight suit to get revenge on his double-crossing colleague. It could lead to an interesting conflict. Peter Parker would be dealing with his guilt and responsibility of doing the right thing as Spider-Man, while Toomes is more than willing to do what he wants to get what he wants. Plus, imagine the awesome fight scenes going on between the two.

  1. MYSTERIO

Mysterio is also ludicrous in his design, and to be honest, I’m not sure how anyone could pull off his fishbowl head look. It would probably have to go through a drastic change to be pulled off well. But, ignoring his horrific outfit, Mysterio’s powers would be awesome on film with today’s CGI crazed productions. Mysterio could be able to create some horrific images, and put Spidey on an acid guilt trip the likes of which we have never seen before. If the studio wants to play with Spidey’s emotions then Mysterio is definitely one of the best to do so.

  1. BLACK CAT

Okay, let’s just get this out-of-the-way; Black Cat is a Catwoman rip off in every sense of the word. They’re both jewel thieves with a cat motif, have an interest in skintight leather jumpsuits, and a flirtatious attitude toward the main superhero. So, now that issue done with, let me argue that Black Cat has a very dark back-story that could make for a very intriguing antagonist. I won’t give it a way, because you guys should look it up, but it has a real strong emotional drive, and it would be an interesting challenge for Spider-Man to take down. She would also be unique as a female character that isn’t a love interest (or Aunt May) in a Spider-Man movie.

  1. KINGPIN

If you watched Daredevil on Netflix then you’ll remember the great, imposing Kingpin of crime, Wilson Fisk. Vincent D’Onofrio brought in a powerhouse of a performance, and was a great villain for Daredevil. But, Kingpin was originally a Spider-Man foe, and I think it would be awesome for Spider-Man to take on such an imposing character that has no powers or abilities. D’Onofrio has stated that he would want to “kick Spider-Man’s butt” in the past. And it could have some cameo appearance from Daredevil, and start setting up the Spider-Man Daredevil friendship from the comics. And it would be a great way to integrate Spider-Man into the Marvel universe further.

  1. KRAVEN THE HUNTER

Kraven was also one of Spider-Man’s more laughable villains, but he became a very admirable threat later during the amazing Kraven’s Last Hunt storyline. He’s an obsessive hunter trying to kill the next most dangerous game. And to him, Spider-Man is the most exciting person to hunt. Kraven’s level of obsession and violence elevates him from a silly bad guy with a gimmick to a Batman level villain with a disturbing amount of psychological drama. And having Spider-Man constantly be hunted throughout New York City would be a fantastic setting for an exciting climax in a Spider-Man movie. And, I mean, come on, how cool would it be to see Kraven and Spidey fighting in a zoo?

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Thanks to the magic of technology, I present to you a leaked copy of the Suicide Squad trailer from the Warner Bros. panel at Hall H.

What do you all think of the 1st trailer?

Is this Aquaman?

Aquaman

About Suicide Squad:
Suicide Squad stars two-time Oscar nominee Will Smith (“The Pursuit of Happyness,” “Ali,” upcoming “Focus”) as Deadshot; Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg; Margot Robbie (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Focus,” the “Tarzan” movie) as Harley Quinn; Oscar winner Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyers Club,” “Alexander”) as the Joker; Jai Courtney (“Divergent,” upcoming “The Water Diviner”) as Boomerang; and Cara Delevingne (“Anna Karenina,” upcoming “Pan”) as Enchantress.

An all-star roster of actors has joined Warner Bros. Pictures’ new action adventure “Suicide Squad,” bringing DC Comics’ super villain team to the big screen under the direction of David Ayer (“Fury”). The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.

In making the announcement, Silverman said, “The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one. David Ayer returns to the studio where he wrote ‘Training Day’ and brings his incredible ability to craft multidimensional villains to this iconic DC property with a cast of longtime Warner collaborators Will Smith and Tom Hardy, and other new and returning favorites: Margot, Jared, Jai and Cara. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.”

Ayer is also writing the script for “Suicide Squad,” which is being produced by Charles Roven (“The Dark Knight” trilogy, upcoming “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”) and Richard Suckle (“American Hustle”). Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns are serving as executive producers.

The film is slated for release on August 5, 2016.

The Top 10 Worst Movies of 2015 (so far)

Monkeys Fighting Robots

So my wife said to me recently,“You are so funny when you are mad about a movie you just saw.” I don’t necessarily see the humor that others might see in the misery that occurs when sitting through a terrible two-hour movie but I get what she is alluding to. When any one of us sit through a stinker of a movie, one of our first impulses is to discuss with the nearest person how bad that movie was. It’s almost as if you are now part of a select group of people who had to endure the agony of the last couple of hours. With that in mind, I feel it’s time to get into the Top 10 worst movies of 2015 (so far). Avoid these movies at all costs.

10) Pitch Perfect 2 –I know that I am going to catch some heat for this one but I still don’t understand why they felt it was necessary to revisit something that really had nothing to revisit. I think this movie was aca-waste of my time. If you have the urge to see this movie just take out the 20 dollars that you were going to spend and light it on fire.

9) 2nd Best Exotic Marigold Hotel –Again, we have a sequel  where they should have just let the first movie be instead of trying to do more. I found myself not caring one bit about Judi Dench or any of the characters in this movie. It was a bore! If you want to know what it’s like to sit through this movie just find the nearest corner in your house or apartment and stare at it for 122 minutes. Just stare … and stare some more. Then you will understand what I went through sitting through this movie.

8) Hot Pursuit – You take one Academy award winner, pair her up with the Spanish mom from Modern Family and you get cinematic trash. If your significant other wants to see this movie you should immediately break up with them. If you go on a date and that person has rented this movie, you should remember a previous engagement on the other side of town.

7) Insurgent –This movie felt like I(a non-spanish speaking person) was watching a Spanish Soap Opera on Telemundo. Wildly confusing choices were made in this movie and it led to a stinker of a final product. After seeing this movie, I felt like I needed to lie down for 3 days.

6) Self/Less-Why, Ryan Reynolds? Why! You are so talented and you end up in such craptastic movies.

5) Project Almanac-Yay! A movie with teens that has shaky camera footage and makes no sense! This movie had all the quality of an MTV TV Movie, yet wasn’t good enough for MTV.

4) Jupiter Ascending-If you want to see a movie that :

  1.  Makes you want to hurt someone, so they can experience your pain for sitting through it
  2. Makes no sense.
  3.  Makes you wonder what sort of blackmail pictures the director may have of Channing Tatum

Then this is the movie for you!

3) 50 Shades of Grey-Let’s take two very inexperienced  actors that no one has any desire of seeing and put them in a movie where they are naked for most of it. Perfect Plan! This movie was literally a gut punch to my soul.

2) The Boy Next Door-This movie is supposed to be a horror film but truthfully it could have been called a comedy. The acting is so bad, the script was horrid, and the sets were something out of a Gaither High School Drama club production (I should know). This movie made me feel like I had experienced a traumatic brain injury as I left the theater completely confused.

1) Magic Mike XXL-A movie that had all the promise and didn’t deliver squat. This movie is an example of why Hollywood is wrong to take the easy way out when it comes to developing projects. On paper this movie should have been a mega success based on the 1st Magic Mike and right now it will be lucky to make ¾ of the money the 1st made. The reason is simple: people don’t want to waste their time with garbage and this movie is garbage.

I hope this list was helpful to you. As always this is the way I see things but if you disagree let me know why. One person’s trash might be another person’s treasure.

Now We Know About Nao – Charlotte Episode 2

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Well, was this weeks episode of Charlotte full of interesting things, or what? While last weeks episode built up the world and sort of delved into Yu’s circumstances. He sorts of takes a back seat in this episode. And in all honesty it’s for the better. We can’t have Yu just be torn apart at the seams this soon. We need to see him interact with more people to really understand the reason for the way he acts. But for now we get a heaping helping of Nao. And that definitely isn’t a bad thing. But before I talk about Nao I want to talk about an interesting scene from the opening credits.

Broken Clock

The scene plays out with two hands reaching out for each other with the clock hands spinning by very fast. As the hands come together they are seemingly torn apart and can’t get a good enough grip. They continue to be torn away and fall to different corners of the screen. Then immediately a crack appears covering the whole shot. Now I know its weird to talk about something in the opening, but as I said before in a Jun Maeda show there can be things hidden everywhere so I think its worth thinking about.

The way I interpret this short three-second scene, is a slight view on how we see the past. Or maybe how the main characters see it. The hands not being able to grasp one another obviously represents being so close but not being able to reach one another in the end. Which is represented in this episode, so I’ll talk about that later. The speed of the clock is how we see just how quickly time moves and that everything that happens cannot be undone since time is moving ever forward. The crack I think means that when we look back at the past we see things skewed because of how it affects us. It could also represent the scar we carry in to the future because of a past experience. Now again I know this is just a piece of the opening sequence but I think that it may represent how one or more of the characters deals with past experiences. So I thought it was at least worth giving a little thought too. But now I’ll get onto the meat of this episode, Nao.

Nao Wandering

I’m usually not one to just fall head over heals for a character design. There needs to be something else there to keep my interest besides a cute face. So last episode I didn’t really have any feeling towards Nao. But after this new episode of Charlotte, Nao is really hitting all the right notes for me. Which is weird considering I usually don’t like any girls in a Jun Maeda work that way. But I really am being won over by her charm. Which doesn’t seem really hard given this episodes content. Because like I said before this episode is really all about her. Well it’s not directly about her but a lot can be deciphered about her character and why she acts the way she does by this episode.

But before all this deepness into her character we are treated to some more nice world building about how in fact the student council tracks down students with powers. Sure it may seem a little convenient that they have a student whose ability is to track down other ability users. But if anything it shows that the person running this school is in constant search for kids who can help the cause. Which may be one reason that Yu was invited into the school and the student council. Honestly all I could think about when I saw this scene is Professor X and Cerebro.

Cerebrum

So once they get a hit they go the school and do a little sleuthing to find out who the kid with the power is. Yu is reluctant to help at first but after an intimidating stare by Nao he pitches in. And what I found strange is that once they confronted the boy, they just warn him about the scientists and leave. They don’t invite him to their school like with Yu. Did Nao only accept Yu into her school because his ability would be useful or was there some other reason? During theses scenes and earlier we get some good humor involving Jojiro and his imperfect teleportation. And I laugh every time it happens. I do enjoy that they can keep it light even though the risks they are facing are truly dangerous. It’s  also good for the viewer to be able to get a quick laugh to gauge how they are supposed to be feeling about a certain scene. And it helps especially in this episode because boy do things get tragic.

After this incident we learn about Naos brother and how he was an ability user who was experimented on by scientists after they found out about his ability. They were tricked by their mother to go to this boarding school where both of them were immediately experimented on. Nao just had a few tests every now and then, but her brother went though some horrible shit. And every time Nao would try to see her brother her friends (who we find out were just placed there to be her friends) would stop her and direct her attention elsewhere.

Guenie Pig

Now its this scenario that I’d like to relate back to the clock scene in the opening. Nao is trying to reach out to her bother but at every chance she gets she is pulled away from him. Also having people who you think are your friends and then having them be the reason you couldn’t see your brother can really mess up someone. But seeing that Nao tells this story so monotone and emotionless, it seems that she may be repressing her feeling of the event in a big way. She is definitely not being her true self in more than one way. And it’s probably going to take something huge to give her the trust she needs to be that open again.

But for now she still is able to see her brother (who is basically a vegetable on drugs and a psychopath while off them) anytime she wants. She takes Yu to see him after he asks about his condition after the experiments. It appears this is routine for her so she probably visits him a lot. And its obvious that she feels some guilt for the way that he’s turned out. This also shows why she decided to be student council president and make sure she can help and warn kids with powers, so they’ll never end up like her brother. Having characters being motivated by reasons that are explained and make sense are real nice.

Charlotte View

One last thing Nao brings up in this scene is a person that she owes a lot too for helping move her brother to such a nice hospital. She considers him the “one person she can trust.” Now while it may be the person who made this school that’s a safe haven for kids with and with the potential for powers. It also may be Yu’s lost brother. Considering that Nao mentioned that the rate for siblings getting powers is high, it might mean that Yu’s brother had powers. It may also relate to why Yu and his sister got accepted into the school and why Yu is in the student council. So obviously he may still care about his family but something causes him to keep his distance from Yu and his sister. Also I’m pretty sure that if he has a power that it has something to do with erasing memories, or changing them ala time travel or something.

Now that’s it for the episode but there is still one thing I want to talk about and again it has to do with the opening and ending. It has to do with the fact that Nao’s brother was in an up and coming band and the fact that Nao is always seen listening to music. Her brother talks about how he wants to be like a certain band called “ZHIEND” which obviously means “the end”. And that probably means something in itself. But we can see that the poster in her brother’s room shows a girl on it.

Zhiend

In the opening we see Nao at her current age after her brothers experimenting and we see ZHIEND on a building in the background and supposedly the same female singer. From this we can imply that the music Nao is listening to is ZHIEND. Maybe this is a way for her to stay connected to her brother even after she lost the artistic side of him. It also may be seen as a crutch. So eventually if the band stops making music Nao may feel like she’s losing a part of her brother in some way. But that’s kind of reaching, just a possibility.

ZHIEND billboard

And then again at the ending we get a good look at Naos MP3 player and see that she is in fact listening to ZHIEND. I’d like to think that after this long of time Nao has a deeper relationship with this band but I guess I’ll have to wait and find out. And while it may be some time until we get anymore development on this, just know that its most likely coming.

Naos Tunes

So if you can’t already tell, I loved this episode. There was so much depth to it and everything, from the visuals to the appropriate tone, was on point. All I can do at this point is take what I know and bring it into the next episode hoping for everything to pay off in the end. And even if I have to wait a while, I’ll most likely enjoy the ride.

As far as I can see it, Charlotte is nowhere near going to disappoint and is shaping up to be the best show of the season. And maybe has the potential to be best show of the year.

Days 1 and 2 of NerdHQ “Conversations for a Cause” recap

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In two days of the NerdHQ “Conversations for a Cause” panels, there have been several highlights, including Bryan Cranston’s “Your mother” joke, William Shatner remembering Leonard Nimoy and great women being bad ass.

On the first day of Q&A panels, Zachary Levi opened and had an emotional moment when explaining how he almost let NerdHQ go after the backlash he got from people who didn’t understand how he was giving all proceeds possible to Operation Smile, and how last year’s crowdfunding support encouraged him. Afterward, after being asked what role he wanted to play next he responded “Han Solo”, knowing it’s a project in the works already, and joked “It’ll probably be Chris Pratt, who am I kidding…” Yes, we know how you feel.

William Shatner

Later that day, Mr. William Shatner made an appearance at NerdHQ and had a lot of wisdom to share. I recommend watching the whole panel, because trying to recap it in just a few words is impossible. During this fascinating hour Shatner also remembered Leonard Nimoy:

“What is a real friend? […] Leonard was a profound friend for me.”

A few hours later, it was turn for the cast of Crackle’s SuperMansion, a superhero spoof series lead and produced by Bryan Cranston with Stoopid Buddy Studios. Cranston, with fellow cast members Seth Green, Matt Senreich, Heidi Gardner, Tucker Gilmore, Tom Root and writer Zeb Wells, went on stage to answer a few questions about the project, except of course, those related to Breaking Bad. A hilarious moment happened from one of those…

“I wish I could bMoffat, Graves and Vertuee like Sherlock Holmes, but I’m too stupid.”

That’s Steven Moffat’s answer to the question of whether him, Sue Vertue and Rupert Graves were more of a Watson or a Sherlock in their everyday lives. On the second day of “Conversations for a Cause”, the audience at the Sherlock panel was made up of hardcore fans who cheered and laughed along all kinds of jokes.

“That’s an absolute fact of the original stories, that Mycroft is the smarter brother [which] Sherlock is quite relaxed about. In the show, Sherlock is hilariously pissed off about Mycroft being smarter, but he’s got it under control… Benedict is furious!”

In the Q&A, the fans also tried to get some answers about the creators’ plans for the series (other family members starring in the show, who is the alleged third sibling…) to no avail. Overall, it was a panel that led to understanding more about the thought process behind the show than about news or any exclusive announcements. They showed the same clip that had been unveiled at Comic-Con the day before. As for anything else, anybody who follows Moffat & Co. knows that they’re always very secretive about their work.

Following that, The Visit panel was another highlight for me. It started with the trailer for this new film by writer/director M. Night Shyamalan and producers of horror flicks like The Purge, Insidious and Sinister. Some interesting topics were discussed: Shyamalan’s favorite horror films (The Exorcist, Psycho, The Haunting, Jaws, The Birds and Alien), how he would torment his cousins during ouija sessions, and the challenge of The Visit being a found-footage film, or “mock-doc”, as producer Jason Blum called it:

“One of the hardest things in found-footage [films] is why are you filming, what motivates the camera, and the fact that the lead in this movie is trying to make something beautiful as a filmmaker, it really helps with that big question, which we struggle with all the time.”

Another audience member asked the director what was it that keep us going back to watching horror films and liking the feeling of being frightened, to what Shyamalan said, very wisely:

“Our goal as filmmakers, at least for me, is to make the audience feel one-to-one with the character. That synchronicity that happens is so beautiful in thrillers, in horrors. […] There’s a simbiotic relationship we strive for.”

In the afternoon, the cast and creators of Con Man took the stage. Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion are two regulars at NerdHQ, both as panelists and hosts, and they didn’t disappoint this time either. They answered questions about the production, the conventions they attended to film it, how was Tudyk as a director… There’s never a dull moment when these men are up on a panel.

Con Man

After them, Elijah Wood answered some questions about what inspires him as an actor, how he grew up as a child actor without going crazy, and he also shared a bit of Nigerian music that he listens to. Needless to say, there was a lot of geeking over Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit as well.

Finally, the “Bad Ass Women” panel featured actresses Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck), Felicia Day (Supernatural, Con Man), Krysta Rodriguez (Smash), Bree Turner (Grimm) and Mercedes Meson (Fear the Walking Dead). There was a lot of “girl power” moments, as you might expect, but more in the sense of supporting instead of walking over each other and other people.

The one thing I absolutely agree with and I think everybody should take from this panel was something Bree Turner said:

“I love celebrating being a woman, but I also would like it to be not such a big deal. […] It’d be great to get to a point where it doesn’t have to be a thing.”

Bad Ass Women

All these panels, along the ones for Battlebots, Dead Rising, Hitman: Agent 47, Project Morpheus, Falling Skies and more, are available to watch online. Granted, the quality of the streams was highly criticized on the live chat, but the individual panel videos are being released on The Nerd Machine Youtube channel.

DAY 1

DAY 2

Apart from this, The Nerd Machine has raised at least over $80,000 these first two days for Operation Smile with its “Conversations for a Cause” and it’s still going strong.

Can Bruce Timm Pull Off The Killing Joke?

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Warner Bros. revealed the three DC Universe Original Movies that will be released in 2016, including an adaptation of the classic Joker story, Batman: The Killing Joke.

Batman: The Killing Joke is the seminal graphic novel written by Alan Moore and drawn by Brian Bolland that offers up a potential (but not exactly trustworthy) origin for the Joker, and that led to a paralyzed Barbara Gordon to retire as Batgirl…temporarily. For years, it’s been one of the most regularly requested animated films by fans.

The animated adaptation of Batman: The Killing Joke is executive produced by Bruce Timm and will retell this classic tale in an exciting new way. It’ll also feature an original 15-minute prologue that helps set up the story, giving even longtime fans of the story something new to look forward to.

In addition, two other animated movies were announced:

Batman: Bad Blood—An original Batman story that features the introduction of Batwoman to the new line of animated films.

Justice League vs. Titans—Another original story and the first of the DC Universe Original Movies to feature the Teen Titans.

Comic-Con: Star Wars panel dazzles

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Comic-Con reached a fever pitch Friday evening as the Star Wars:The Force Awakens panel began in Hall H. Right off the bat the moderator Chris Hardwick exclaimed to the audience that they were going to see some special things tonight. Moments later J.J. Abrams took the stage along with Kathleen Kennedy and Lawrence Kasdan  to a thunderous roar of approval. Then J.J. Abrams dropped a huge #SDCC surprise and told the crowd that he had a cut of the movie.

This of course brought the crowd to it’s feet. J.J. claims that he has a cut of the movie finished and he is right now “tweaking” it. Here is another shot !

Of course they could n’t just have cuts of the movie to show.

J.J. Abrams then went directly into a behind the scenes video that focused on Han Solo and Princess Leia. This is the first time we have seen Carrie Fisher back in the role that shot her into super stardom.

Then Hardwick turned his attention towards a Question and Answer session.

The issue of racial diversity came up in the Q and A. J.J. Abrams said that he wanted to cast the movie so it would reflect the diverse world that we live in today.

It was revealed that actor Domnhall Gleeson will be playing a villian in the movie named General Hux. The mood quickly switched as the showed another clip that gave us a good look at Kylo Ren.

They even let us in on the name of some of the new technology in The Force Awakens.

and then a lady who needed no introduction joined the panel

Who was quickly joined by this guy.

and then this guy brought the house down

Harrison Ford was the last to join the panel and was asked how it felt to play Han Solo again.

Harrison Ford was asked if he ever envisioned that he would do another Star Wars.

Overall this panel dazzled from beginning to end and gave Star Wars fans exactly what they were hoping for.
