First Look: ‘DC’s Legends of Tomorrow’ Hawkgirl and Hawkman

Monkeys Fighting Robots

DC Comics released the first image of Hawkgirl and Hawkman from DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Friday morning.

That’s Ciara Renée as Kendra Saunders and Falk Hentschel as her soulmate Carter Hall in the first official image of the two characters. With powers derived from the ancient Egyptian hawk god, Horus, Kendra and Carter are destined to reincarnate through time as winged, helmeted warriors. On DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Hawkgirl and Hawkman will fight alongside the Atom, Firestorm, White Canary, Captain Cold and Heat Wave against the immortal Vandal Savage. Look for them to initially debut in this season’s Arrow and The Flash crossover episode before moving on to DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

‘The Flash’ Season 2 Extended Trailer

Monkeys Fighting Robots

CW’s The Flash could be the greatest rendition of a character to unfold in live action. The spirit of the show inspires all that is good with superheroes. Marvel Studios is a bit campy, Warner Bros. is a bit too dark, FOX is all over the place, but with The Flash, the CW seems to have found the right chemistry with cast and crew. The only show that rivals The Flash is Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix, but Daredevil doesn’t inspire you to want to help your neighbors or safely walk an old lady across the street.

The CW Thursday released an extend look at season two of The Flash. The Scarlet Speedster returns to the CW on October 6.

Coming This Fall: Concrete Revolutio: Choujin Gensou

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Concrete Revolutio: Choujin Gensou is a 24 episode, action/superpower (not the only one at that) show, animated by Bones and directed by Seiji Mizushima, who previously worked to together to create the original Full Metal Alchemist.

Concrete Revolutio Body 1

The synopsis for this one reads: “The stage is set in “another Japan” as a banquet of diverse superhumans unfolds… In an imaginary “age of gods” about 20 years after the war, Japan has grown and developed by leaps and bounds. What if all the superhumans ever written about in fictional stories existed at the same time? Superhumans who came into existence through different circumstances, and who are special in different ways—Titans from outer space, lifeforms from a mystical world, phantoms and goblins from ancient times, cyborgs created by scientists, relics that rose out of the ruins of ancient civilizations, and the list goes on. One segment of these superhumans makes no secret of their existence and has gained popularity in society. Others cloak their identities and fight in secrecy. There are enemies of superhumans as well, organizations that operate in the shadows. The Japanese government has taken many measures to secure peace and order. One is the establishment of an organization under the Ministry of Health and Welfare—the Overpopulation Research Laboratory, a.k.a. the Superhuman Bureau. Their mission is to identify and approach superhumans, then oversee and safeguard them. One member of the Superhuman Bureau, Jirou Hitoyoshi, is protagonist of this series.” (Source)

The PV features very colorful art and a James-Bond Esque music style. It’s a little odd, on one hand you have the characters act very serious, but on the other hand you have cutesy color palette and a cloud with a clown face. At any rate this is from an accomplished crew and a respected studio, so I’m expecting big things.

Concrete Revolutio: Choujin Gensou will begin airing October 4th, 2015.

Leaked ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Images

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The beautiful thing about the internet is that you never know when it will give you a juicy glimpse into a movie that you are so excited to see. Well, this morning we were given a juicy glimpse into X-Men: Apocalypse courtesy of some leaked images that we were alerted to me by a fan of our site. Check them out!

UPDATE: The image has been removed at the request of Fox.

The image that sticks out most to me is that of Oscar Issac as Apocalypse. One of the biggest complaints from fans who saw the footage of X-Men: Apocalypse at San Diego Comic-Con was how incomplete Apocalypse looked. I think after seeing these images fans are going to be very excited about Bryan Singer’s vision for this film.

4 Unexplained Magical Powers In Anime

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Anime has shown us some of the most fantastic ideas and worlds of wonder over the years, able to accomplish these feats largely through the use of different items of extreme power. Items such as the Spiral Energy in Gurren Lagann (which allows people to have their giant robots do impossible feats), and the Jewel of Four Souls (The Shikon Jewel, which gives Demons extra power) from Inuyasha allow the characters to reach goals and possess powers we in the real world could never dream of. The trick is making sure the origin of the powers –  and what they are capable of  – are clearly established throughout the course of the story. Except a couple of series that don’t take the time to properly spell out either the origins of the Macguffins/Dues Ex Machina/Doodads or what they are capable of in the course of their runs, which usually leads to the fans having to make explanations of their own.

The Silver Crystal from Sailor Moon

712ZFD7lX5L

What we don’t know:

Where did the crystal come from? The crystal is an object of power capable of resurrection, teleportation, healing, and destructive blasts that have vaporized evil creatures on more than one occasion. Before dismissing it with the “It’s just magic!” explanation, keep this in mind: During the series Sailor Moon Stars it was revealed that the Sailor Senshi (Sailor Scouts in America) were powered by internal batteries called Star Seeds. It was during this arc that Sailor Moon battled with the final enemy Sailor Galaxia (who was possessed by the ultimate evil being Chaos) who was gathering all the Star Seeds in the universe to obtain ultimate power. So, if the Star Seeds are the source of power in the Universe, what exactly is the Silver Crystal? This is more explained the original manga (where her crystal is actually her Star Seed) but they never explained it in the original anime so its origin is still a mystery.

The Dragonballs from Dragonball

dragonballs

What we don’t know:

The true origin of the Dragonballs is never truly explained. The best description of the Dragonball and their power is given in the series by Master Roshi in an episode of Dragonball:

“The Legend as I was told goes something like this. In the beginning there was only one Dragonball. It was huge. I mean REALLY huge, it had to be. It held all the mystical energies of the user. An ancient tribe discovered it and was inspired by its magnificent power. To ensure such an evil would never get their hands on it, the Dragonball was divided into seven smaller orbs and scatter across the globe. Separately the Dragonballs were useless, but when all seven were united then a single voice could summon the Eternal Dragon for one wish, and one wish only.”  (abridged from the Dragonball episode, “The Legend of a Dragon”).

The problem with this explanation is this was before the introduction of Kami (who made the earth Dragonballs) and before the reveal that Kami was an alien from the planet Namek (the balls original home). The balls are also seen to have limited powers of the maker of the balls but those makers (Dende, Kami, and Guru) have never displayed the ability to bring people back from the dead.

The One Piece of One Piece

Gol_D

What we don’t know:

Though it has been hinted at repeatedly throughout the course of the series, we still have no solid answer as to what the One Piece is. Everything from ancient weapons of power, rare jewels, and fantastic devil fruits (the food that when eaten gives someone super powers) have been hinted at being in the One Piece. It is these widely varied beliefs that keep all the different characters on the journey going strong. The one comfort fans of the series can take is that this unexplained item will eventually be explained once the series reaches its finale. But after 15+ years of stories and 78 volumes of manga you have to ask, “Will what they find really be worth it?”

The Power of Prince Dio from Revolutionary Girl Utena

Dios

What we don’t know:

What exactly is the power of the Prince and will it actually allow someone to revolutionize the world? The fact that an upside-down castle (probably created by the prince) and the Rose Gate are needed to contain his power points greatly to the idea that the power is that of a god.

There also is the fact that the prince is such a powerful being, he is able to split himself into two beings: one of pure good (who remains asleep in the floating castle) and one of pure evil (Akio Ohtori). This further demonstrates the immense power he had when he was still whole. Since what Dios showed Utena was something eternal and immortal, it would stand to theorize he had gazed upon what was eternal for many years to realize just how unchanging it was (trying not to say what it is as it’s the biggest spoiler of the entire series). So does this mean someone who obtained this power would be able to change the world?   Unfortunately, the director is known for being a bit vague on the details and in flashbacks all we really get is he was a hero of great power but never learn where the power comes from of if he was just born with it.

Marvel’s Top Choice for ‘Captain Marvel’ is ….

Monkeys Fighting Robots

According to Heroic Hollywood, It seems that Marvel has it’s eyes set on Rebecca Ferguson to play the title role in Captain Marvel. This should come as no shock to you as Marvel has a history of chasing that hot name to play in it’s films. Remember, she was locked in to play the female lead in Gambit but pulled out of the film without much of an explanation. Could she be destined to step into one of Marvel’s most recognizable female roles?

Chris Hardwick Brings The Future Of Horror With ‘The Hive’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Chris Hardwick and David Yarovesky stopped by to talk about their horror film presented by Nerdist, The Hive. This feature film will be in theaters on September 14th for one night only (tickets).

Hardwick talked about why Nerdist picked The Hive as their first film to distribute and the future of ‘Nerdist Presents.’ Yarovesky gave us an inside look at what elements make up a good horror film and what it felt like to have James Gunn endorse his work.

Listen to the complete Chris Hardwick and David Yarovesky interview.

About The Hive:
Directed by Yarovesky and produced by Cary Granat, The Hive is a fun, disgusting terror of a love story involving a virus that manifests itself as eye-bulging goo. After a mysterious plane crashes in the woods, couple Adam (Gabriel Basso) and Katie (Kathryn Prescott) investigate only to find a disease that quickly goes pandemic. They must fight through amnesia and disturbing memories to find out what happened and survive.

“Yarvo has managed to tell a horror story in a fantastic new way that is super creepy and intimate, yet ultimately unfolds into a much larger movie. I’m so excited that we could help bring to the world! I just want people to be able to see it ASAP,” said Hardwick.

Yarovesky has been described by Film Threat as “A filmmaker to watch.” At only 35 years old he has over 40 music video, 10 commercials, 3 short films, and a feature film under his belt.

Is The Scarlet Witch The Traitor In ‘Captain America: Civil War’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Elizabeth Olsen spoke with Premiere.fr about what it means to be part of the Avengers franchise, her character the Scarlet Witch, and Captain America: Civil War.

“Being part of a Marvel movie makes me feel like I’m doing the most top secret thing in the world. It’s ridiculous because it’s a film, but also it’s too bad when people want to spoil things about movies or paparazzi are on set taking pictures of certain things. And everyone then gets to guess what it is that you’re filming. And it ruins it for everyone. I was just so happen that in Avengers [Age of Ultron] we were able to keep a lot of things secret so there were surprises for the audience which is great,” said Olsen.

Part of the Captain America: Civil War plot will be a traitor among the teams, could Olsen’s comments be a hint to the film’s dynamic.

“She’s someone who’s more powerful than she’s able to control and she ends up going insane because of it,” she said of her mutant character. “And she’s like a wildcard. You never know [if] she’s a hero or a villain and that’s a very fun part,” said Olsen.

Daniel Brühl plays the villain Baron Zemo in Captain America: Civil War, and Olsen was impressed by his performance. She also adds that Brühl is the main villain in the film and takes a slight jab at Avengers: Age of Ultron.

“Brühl is an incredible actor and he’s playing the main villain in it, and he’s incredible! It’s a movie about people as opposed to robots this time. So it’s darker and it’s allowed to be darker because it gets more in the mindset of humans rather than machines,” said Olsen.

Olsen apparently isn’t a fan of machines.

Directed by Anthony & Joe Russo from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, Captain America: Civil War picks up where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off, as Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

Starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Chadwick Boseman, Emily VanCamp, Daniel Brühl, Frank Grillo, William Hurt, and Martin Freeman.

Captain America: Civil War is set for release on May 6, 2016.
