Halloween Films the Whole Family Can Enjoy

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In the recent article, “Fright Features: On the ‘The Monster Squad,’ and It’s Badass Prince of Darkness,” by Larry Taylor, he talked about a family-friendly -and at moments creepy- film that everyone can enjoy and it got me thinking. Monkey’s should provide some recommendation for the who gang to watching during the month of October.

Here are some Halloween favorites of my own you should give a look:

The Worst Witch (1986)

The Worst Witch Poster

Probably my favorite Halloween film to watch, EVER! It’s one of the earliest sightings of Fairuza Balk on film. She stars as Mildred Hubble a not so stellar example of a witch in training. This TV movie takes place in an all girls school which happens to double as a prestigious witch academy – think Harry Potter but with only skirts. Mildred can’t seem to do anything right and is constantly the brunt of her peers and teachers torment. But in the end this black sheep and hopeless little witch saves the day. Also in the cast: the Facts of Life’s Charlotte Rae doing double duty as the headmistress Miss Cackle and her evil twin Agatha; Diana Rigg as Miss Hardbroom (Snape in a dress); and Tim Curry as The Grand Wizard (poor choice of a title). It’s silly and sweet and worth watching. Growing up isn’t easy!

The Monster Squad (1987)

Monster Squad Poster

You can’t go wrong with a gang of imaginative kids who have their own club dedicated to horror films, monster, ghouls, AND they meat in a tree clubhouse. That’s the Monster Squad. It’s a film about a group of kids who find themselves stuck in the middle of battle between good and evil. All the classic monster are present – Count Dracula, the Wolfman, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Frankenstein’s Monster, A mummy, and a vampire bride – and they all want to see the world overtaken by evil. The kids discover The Count’s plan and set about to thwart him and his gang of ghouls. Did you know that, “Wolfman’s got nards?” Andre Gower, Stephen Macht, Tom Noonan, Ryan Lambert, Jon Gries, and Mary Ellen Trainer star is this classic teeny-bopper horror is NOT for the faint at heart or for pussies. Dracula has a bite.

Teen Witch (1989)

Teen Witch Fun Poster

Robyn Lively is Louise Miller an unpopular, nerdy, sweet 15 year old girl who has a crush on the hottest, most popular guy in school. One night while riding her bike she gets into an accident and knocks on the door of a strange house. She encounters Madame Serena, Zelda Rubenstein, who is a seer, and it is revealed to her that she is reincarnated witch and old friend of Serena’s. On her 16th birthday she is due to come into her powers and she takes advantage of her new-found talents. She wants the hottest guy in school to like her and she realizes that the only way to do this is for her to become popular. She casts a spell, she becomes popular, and then the spell gets out of hand. Her admirers turn stalkers! She realizes that popularity isn’t everything and that true friendship and being who you are is more important. It is soooo 80s, so cheesy, and fantastic.

The Witches (1990)

Witches, The

The WITCHES! This is an incredibly creepy film that all kids who are not afraid of their own shadows, and that like horror films, will love. This film is based on the Roald Dahl’s novel by the same name. It is the story of a a young boy, Luke Evesham, a precocious child on holiday with his grandmother Helga. He has a vivid imagination and, she [Luke’s grandmother] plays into it with her stories of witches and their dislike of children. Luke, the inquisitive child that he is, becomes preoccupied with the idea of witches and female demons that hate children and want to destroy them. While on holiday he stumbles across a group of such women, in disguise, attending a convention for like-minded others. Luke discovers their plan to exterminate children and must thwart their efforts in order to save the world’s children from imminent demise. Angelica Houston is the Grand High Witch!

The Addams Family (1991)

The Addams Family the movie.

This is one of two films starring Christina Ricci to make the list and the second for Angelica Houston.

Duh duh duh duh duh! *snap, snap* Duh duh duh duh duh! The Addams Family is great film to watch with the kids. The cult classic comic and TV series from the 1960s is brought to life and given a bit of polish to delight audiences of all ages. Morticia (Angelica Houston), Gomez (the late Raul Julia), Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd), Wednesday (Christina Ricci), Thing, and Pugsley (Jimmy Workman), make their way to the big screen. Twenty-five years after the disappearance of Fester. Gomez laments about his disappearance and how much he would like his brother back in his life. His lawyer -Gomez’s- who owes a lot of money to a loan shark notices that her son, Gordon, resembles his missing brother. They hatch a plan to have him pose as Fester and steal the Addams’ fortune. Little does everyone know that Gordon is the true Fester Addams after all. Check it out!

Hocus Pocus (1993)

Disney's Hocus Pocus

Another kid-centric film that will thrill the family. We meet 300 years after the Sanderson sisters are executed for practicing the dark arts. A spell is broken by a new kid in town and the sisters come back to life. The brood have just one night, Halloween night, to ensure that they will continue to walk amongst the living. Three kids and a cat with a human soul must save the town’s children from the wicked witches who plan to lure them in and drink their life essence to remain young and nubile. Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy star as the Sanderson sister backed up by a cast of virtual unknowns and Thora Birch. It is a great film to catch during the Halloween season and super family friendly.

Casper (1995)

Casper the Friendly Ghost

Who doesn’t love Casper? Where most references to ghosts paint them as scary characters, Casper is a sweetheart. Carrigan Crittenden, Cathy Moriarty, inherits a haunted house from her late father. She discovers that within the house lies hidden treasures but every attempt to find the goods is thwarted by the ghosts of Casper’s mischievous uncles, Fatso, Stretch, and Stinkie. She hires a paranormal therapist, James Harvey, Bill Pullman, to rid her house of the spirits. Harvey, along with his young daughter Kat (Christina Ricci), move into the house and get to work. The shenanigans that transpire will entertain the entire family.

Halloweentown (1998)

Disney's Halloweentown

The made for TV movie is another one from Disney. Now generally I do not easily recommend Disney channel things, but I just like this movie. It stars the legendary Debbie Reynolds as Aggie Cromwell, a lovable grandmother who comes to visit her daughter and grandchildren on Halloween. The children don’t know much about her, but she has always been an eccentric character. What her grandkids don’t know is that they she is a very powerful witch from an old-established and so are they. She has come to them on the holy night of All Hallows Even with the intent to get her daughter to agree to reveal that they are witches and to start training her eldest daughter, Marnie, in the craft. Mom says, “No,” grandma leaves, and the kids follow her home to Halloweentown. Upon entering the town the realize that something is terribly wrong and the Cromwell/Piper clan must save the day.

What are you favorite family Halloween films?

Happy Watching!

Nova Will Not Be In ‘Guardians the Galaxy Vol. 2’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Filmmaker James Gunn held a Facebook Q&A and answered questions about Guardians the Galaxy Vol. 2 and filmmaking.

Gunn was adamant that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will not build up to Avengers: Infinity War and the sequel would be a stand alone film. He is not concerned about the Avengers film.

Gunn mentioned that Guardians the Galaxy Vol. 2 will take about 10-months to shoot, starting February in Atlanta and he will add one more character to the main cast of the film. Adam Warlock’s name was brought up during the conversation but Gunn would not comment on his involvement.

“I’m not going to give names and I won’t give numbers either, but there will be at least one new character in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. You guys gotta wait and see… Everything’s going to be different in the ‘Infinity Wars.’ I’m a lot more concerned with ‘Vol. 2’ than I am with ‘Infinity Wars.’ The way the movie [’Vol. 2’] is structured and made – it really is a story unto itself. It’s not about leading up to anything else. It’s about the Guardians and their lives,” said Gunn.

An earthling version of Nova will not be in the sequel.

“There will be no other humans being earthlings besides Quill,” said Gunn.

More notes:
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has been mostly cast and the soundtrack is set.
Nebula will have a larger role.
Stan Lee will be in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Howard the Duck might have another appearance in the film.
He has no interest in directing the Thunderbolts film.
Gunn confirms Beta Ray Bill is not in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1.
The filmmaker would like to direct Shazam or Metal Man for DC.

FRIGHT FEATURES: Is ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’ a Good Film? It’s Hard to Tell

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Francis Ford Coppola’s operatic and wildly spastic adaptation of the author’s epistolary novel is, despite its warts, never dull. To be fair this film version is arguably the most accurate spiritual portrayal of Stoker’s work, which many forget is a salacious, gothic pulp novel in its own right. But is the film good? It’s maybe the most difficult adaptation to categorize down the fine lines of “good” and “bad,” because it truly depends on what you appreciate. For every moment that works there are confusingly bombastic directorial decisions and unhinged editing which seem to upend any momentum. It stops and starts more than any film I can remember, and yet, there is some real magic here.

Bram Stoker's Dracula

The opening act is by far the most compelling section of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. There is the prologue, showing Vlad the warrior curse God and become the Prince of Darkness – which contains some wonderful visual work – after his wife hurls herself from atop the castle walls. Then we hop forward a couple hundred years and meet Jonathan Harker, the young lawyer traveling to Count Dracula’s Transylvania castle to work out a real estate deal. Keanu Reeves plays Harker, and is a curious choice for the role. Reeves has never been a fit in period work, and even Coppola has said his casting was pressure to get a young, hot actor in the role to put butts in seats. That being said, Reeves’ strange attempt at a stuffy accent and wooden acting somehow works to juxtapose the insane theatrics he finds himself thrust into once he meets the Count. It’s grown on me ever so slightly, and it has evolved over the years.

Once Harker arrives at Castle Dracula, all bets are off. It’s here we meet the most fascinating embodiment of the vampire, who changes looks throughout. Gary Oldman is game for the role, and he plays it up with a macabre glee. Harker’s spiral down the dark tunnels of madness in this early act is both brilliant and extravagant, setting a feverish gothic stage. But once the action moves from Transylvania to London, the tapestry of the picture unravels. We meet Mina (Winona Ryder, perfect) and Lucy, we build some strange sexual undertones, and the structure of the film spirals out of control through visual flourishes and extravagance Coppola had never before been so distracted by. It all seems to crescendo when Lucy is raped by Dracula, in wolf form no less. The film moves from a fluid opera of death into a frenetic, over-edited mess of confused sexual nihilism; the focus dissipates. To be fair to the jumpy structure, Coppola keeps the narrative episodic to honor Stoker’s epistolary style in the novel, but he could have left a few things out and mad some choices along the way.

That structure is what stops and starts the film. It is too episodic to congeal as a coherent whole. The early scenes work magic, then the next scenes where a dapper young Dracula woos Mina at the town fair plod along. Part of the problem lies within the strange chemistry between Oldman and Ryder. I won’t say there is no chemistry, it’s there, but it’s stodgy and weird. There were reports from the set that Oldman and Ryder, who were pleasant with one another in the production stages of the film, showed up day one of filming seemingly hating each other with no explanation as to why. Maybe that plays into the odd chemistry between the two, who knows.

Van Helsing

And then there is Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing the famous vampire hunter. Hopkins plays up Van Helsing as some sort of madman, chewing scenery left behind by Oldman. It is simultaneously a distracting and captivating, amusing performance. In that sense it fits in with the rest of the film, at once all over the map and exactly what the film wants. To be fair, Hopkins’ portrayal fits the manic nature of the character in Stoker’s novel. Van Helsing’s scenes with the trio of gentleman callers sometimes seem to be happening exclusively from the romance between Dracula and Mina, jarring loose any forward momentum.

There is a precise intent in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, though that very precise intent requires the film to lose track of itself more than once. This intent of precision is not fully executed, but despite the stop-and-start manner of the film certain scenes are decidedly powerful. First and foremost, the film is a romance, and it knows this. And Coppola frames this love story as a true operatic narrative, full of grandiose gestures and theatrics. It works in the vein of a stage play all too often to fit together as a complete film.

And yet, I want to like Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I absolutely yearn to love it, because of what it has to offer. Perhaps that’s what keeps me coming back to a film that continually leaves me wanting in the end.

Disney Opens West Coast Avengers HQ In November

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Spider-Man joins the Disney family this November as a greeter in the new Super Hero HQ at Disneyland. Times must be tough for Peter Parker.

Super Hero HQ

Shawn Slater the Communications Manager at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Creative Entertainment posted this announcement to the company’s blog.

When the reimagined Super Hero HQ opens this fall at Disneyland park, everyone’s favorite web slinger is swinging in for the occasion. That’s right! Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will be making his Disneyland Resort debut in a heroic new character greeting location, where you can snap a photo, grab an autograph or just thank him for keeping us safe from the likes of Doctor Octopus and the Green Goblin!

Super Hero HQ is the West Coast home base of some of the greatest heroes in the universe. It’s the place to go, not only to meet some of those heroes, but to discover the super hero in yourself. You can tour Treasures of Asgard and cross the Bifrost to come face-to-face with the mighty Avenger, Thor. Virtually suit up as Iron Man and check out the Hall of Armor at Iron Man Tech Presented by Stark Industries, play some of the latest games in the Game Center and pick up some Super Hero gear to take with you on your journey home.

Universal Studios theme parks own the rights to several Marvel characters east of the Mississippi, so don’t expect Spider-Man to show up at Disney World in Orlando anytime soon.

Super Hero HQ opens November 16 in the Tomorrowland Expo Center at Disneyland park.

Could Universal’s New Version of ‘The Mummy’ Swap Genders?

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Universal Studios are still working on building their interconnected monster universe, rebooting their famous collection of horror icons into new versions. Despite my own reservations about the (UMU?), there is still hope to make this something interesting.

The first film in this new universe is The Mummy, and it seems now that the gender identity of the mummy itself depends on the casting. The Hollywood Reporter has the report that director Alex Kurtzman and screenwriter Jon Spaihts have a couple of storylines working. In one of the stories the mummy is male, and in one female. It all depends on who excels in the casting.

This is an interesting idea, one that might help the diversity of the Universal Monster Universe in a progressive society Hollywood intent on creating more diversity. It’s a novel idea, switching genders in some iconic intellectual properties, and I don’t see an issue here. What I have issue with is the general notion of recreating these legendary icons of horror cinema in an attempt to tie them all together. It could work, and it worked in the originals as The Wolf Man, Dracula, and Frankenstein often crossed paths. I’m just not excited about the brain trust of Kurtzman and Fast and Furious writer Chris Morgan behind the project. They feel like ill-fitting parts.

Hopefully I’m wrong. I’m holding out hope. Let’s all hope this new version is closer to the 1932 version, and it doesn’t remind us one bit about Brendan Fraser.

What do you think about the idea of The Mummy being a female?
