Quentin Tarantino Planning Apology to Dig Himself Out of Police Brutality Mess

Monkeys Fighting Robots

What a crazy couple of weeks it’s been for Quentin Tarantino. After disparaging remarks regarding police and the growing incidents (or recordings) of police brutality – remarks causing a major union uproar and calls for boycotts of QT’s films – the director intends on delivering a formal apology.

On October 24, Quentin Tarantino appeared in Manhattan at a rally protesting police violence, and ended up calling police murderers. “When I see murders,” he said, “I do not stand by… I have to call a murder a murder and I have to call the murderers the murderers.” The comments created a firestorm of angry police union workers who immediately called for a boycott of Tarantino’s films, especially his upcoming Western The Hateful Eight. The outcry was quiet at first, but in the last ten days has continued to grow and swell to hundreds of unions and over 200,000 law-enforcement officers.

It seems the noise has gotten too loud for Tarantino, who has been silent in the media since appearing at the rally, to ignore anymore. According to the report in The Wrap, previously cited, the director has told colleagues he intends to apologize.

The apology is clearly reactionary at this point. With the word of Quentin Tarantino’s “murderers” claim spreading far and wide, and the idea that the boycott could actually somehow affect the bottom line of The Hateful Eight, this spin control can be seen a mile away. Some people still want QT to stay true to his words at the rally, including Jaime Foxx, who told his Django shot caller to “Keep telling the truth and don’t worry about none of the haters.”

I still don’t think this outrage and subsequent boycott will affect the box-office numbers of The Hateful Eight at all. Quentin Tarantino has his fans, and they are his fans; they don’t care what he says or the hot opinions he may have about police or police brutality. QT is full of polarizing opinions, though this time he may have stepped on the wrong toes. That being said, many of his supporters feel the same way about the police, especially with the growing catalogue of brutality videos going viral. Regardless of his stance on police brutality, his film will make its expected box-office numbers, and don’t expect any sort of dip in Awards season nominations… if such noms are warranted.

Where do you stand on this? Should Tarantino apologize for his statements, or was he speaking the truth?

‘Star Trek’ Officially Heading Back to TV

Monkeys Fighting Robots

After over a decade away from the small screen, Star Trek will be heading back to TV with a new series from producer Alex Kurtzman.

According to the news from The Hollywood Reporter, this new Star Trek will air on CBS in January of 2017 as a traditional series, but will then move over to the CBS on-demand platform CBS All Access. This is the first series created specifically for the VOD platform. Per THR:

“The new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.”

Kurtzman has had a long relationship with Star Trek, producing the films and co-writing the 2009 reboot and it’s subsequent sequel, 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness. The original series aired in 1966 and ’67, and The Next Generation, easily the most successful TV version of the universe, ran from 1987-1994, with Deep Space Nine (93-99), Voyager (95-01) and Enterprise (01-05) following thereafter.

‘The Revenant’ Gets Some Gritty DiCaprio, Hardy Character Posters

Monkeys Fighting Robots

A few weeks ago the first minimalist poster for The Revenant was released, and despite its lack of detail, it managed to capture the fiery essence of the trailers. Now, we have two character posters in much of the same vein as that initial poster, only now we have Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy staring back at us from the abyss of madness.

Here are the two new posters:

The Revenant

The Revenant

These are absolutely beautiful posters for what promises to be one of the more intense film experiences of the year. The ember tracers coming from the left side add an especially intriguing look to a gorgeous silver/blue palette.

The Revenant will open in limited release on Christmas, then expands wide January 8.

JU-ON [THE GRUDGE] (2002) – Japan

Ju-On

I was about 13-years-old when I saw this in theaters and it was a real unforgettable, scary and creepy experience. Writer and director Takashi Shimizu created a fairly contained story about a cursed house that will damn anybody who dares to enter it. I remember thinking that the ending didn’t make much sense, but as I’ve re-watched it later on, I’ve come to realize that the outcome doesn’t really matter. Everything else is too perfectly horrifying for the end to take away from the whole film.

The 2004 remake to Ju-On, titled The Grudge, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Bill Pullman, was also directed by Shimizu, and it’s a close second to the original. Its story is more rounded-up overall, and it’s set in Tokyo, a detail I loved.

The music in Ju-On takes the movie to another level, pulling from both the psychological and physical terror in almost every single scene. Be ready because this one leaves a mark.

Written by Takashi Shimizu.
Starring Megumi Okina, Misaki Itô, Misa Uehara, Yui Ichikawa.

JANGHWA, HONGRYEON [A TALE OF TWO SISTERS] (2003) – South Korea

Tale of Two Sisters

As the title suggests, this film is about two sisters. They go back home after having been institutionalized in a mental facility, and they have to deal with a weird stepmother and a hostile atmosphere. The plot is a true puzzle that will leave you delighted with its intricacy and wide array of genres (thriller, horror, drama…). Everything is just about perfect in this, from the cinematography to the music and everything in between, including the acting. It has been rightfully called a masterpiece.

If the others were only suggestions, this is a must.

Directed and written by Jee-woon Kim.
Starring Kap-su Kim, Jung-ah Yum, Su-jeong Lim, Geun-young Moon.

SAAM GAANG YI [THREE… EXTREMES] (2005) – Hong Kong/Japan/South Korea

Saam Gaan Yi

An anthology film with short stories by Fruit Chan, Takashi Miike (Audition) and Chan-wook Park (Oldboy).

“Dumplings” tells the story of the most expensive dumplings sold in Hong Kong which have a peculiar ingredient and makes them have rejuvenating properties. If you don’t get sick with nausea after this, you can power through the rest without a problem.

“Box” is not the most popular short film out of the three because it’s the most confusing and vague. We’re experiencing so much from the main character’s story that, like her, it’s hard for us to distinguish what’s real and what’s part of her nightmares.

Finally, “Cut” is the one with the most violence and brutality. It features scenes which challenge the viewer to question whether to keep watching or not, they’re that gruesome.

Each of the short films are extreme in their own way, but all of them requiring a lot from the audience: a strong stomach and a firm mind to endure some of the most powerful scenes.

Written by Bun Saikou (story, “Box”), Haruko Fukushima (“Box”), Pik Wah Lee (“Dumplings”), Chan-wook Park (“Cut”).
Starring Bai Ling, Tony Ka Fai Leung, Byung-hun Lee, Hye-jeong Kang, Kyoko Hasegawa.

ANG-MA-REUL BO-AT-DA [I SAW THE DEVIL] (2010) – South Korea

I Saw the Devil

A tale of twisted serial murders, vengeance and morality. When a serial killer kills his fiancée in a horrible way, Soo-hyun, a top secret agent, swears he’ll track him down whatever the cost. The violence in this film, directed by Jee-woon Kim, will unsettle you. The horror element in the movie we find more in the brutal nature of the killer and vindictive ways of the main character than in anything else. The plot can be predictible, but the depth of the dramatic story wins out.

Written by Hoon-jung Park, Jee-woon Kim.
Starring Byung-hun Lee, Min-siw Choi, In-seo Kim, Joon-hyeok Lee.

Doctor Who Review: ‘The Woman Who Lived’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Maisie Williams returns for her second and final Doctor Who episode in Season 9 – suffering the curse of immorality, continuing 800 years after the events of “The Girl Who Died”. Though the episode suffers from jarring shifts between deadly serious and swashbuckling comedy “The Woman Who Lived” is the best episode in this ninth season of Doctor Who.

The Doctor arrives in 1651 searching for an alien artefact that has found itself in the possession of a noble English woman. Ashildr (Williams)  has now renamed herself Lady Me, having few memories of her previous life and currently operates as the notorious highwayman Knightmare. The pair work together to find the artefact, but Me is actually in cohorts with a lion like alien.
doctor who - the woman who lived
“The Woman Who Lived” is at its best when it focuses on The Doctor and Me, their relationship and how Me perceive The Doctor abandoned her. Williams’ character has turned from Ashildr, the young girl with a big imagination to Me who has suffered pain and loss over the centuries of her life. Me has lived to be a Medieval Queen, fought at the Battle of Agincourt and seen the horrors of The Black Death.  Due to her experience Me has turned into a harden, bitter character with a more carless attitude towards life. Though Me is a smart woman with the ability to adapt, she is human, making her flawed and her memory limited. She only remembers what is vital for her existence.

Williams’ is given more weighty material then in her previous episode and her performance was better for it. She was fine in “The Girl Who Died” but she did not have much to work with. In “The Woman Who Lived” we see a more of a range as she debates with The Doctor about how everyone she has ever love has disappeared and that is why she became emotionally distant. But it is not all misery and despair from Williams, she does have fun with Peter Capaldi as they bicker during their robbery, being the most funny moment of the episode.

WARNING: Embargoed for publication until 00:00:01 on 20/10/2015 - Programme Name: Doctor Who - TX: 24/10/2015 - Episode: THE WOMAN WHO LIVED (By Cath Tregenna) (No. 6) - Picture Shows: ***EMBARGOED UNTIL 20TH OCTOBER 2015*** Leandro (ARIYON BAKARE), Me (MAISIE WILLIAMS) - (C) BBC - Photographer: Simon Ridgway

“The Woman Who Lived” is the first Doctor Who episode written by Catherine Tregenna, although she has written episodes of Touchwood so has experience with the Doctor Who universe. Her teleplay works best during the character driven moments debating about the people they have lost over the years, Me seeing them IN puffs of smoke who blows and questions how many people The Doctor has lost, how many Clara’s he has had as companions. Elements of the story have shades of the original screenplay of Highlander that gives “The Woman Who Lived” its darkest moments. When the episode shows Me as a queen and a soldier I could not help thinking that it is a reference to Williams’ role as Ayra Stark, being more tomboyish and a girl of action.

Although “The Woman Who Lived” works best as character drama it is also very reliant on jokes and humor. The episodes starts by The Doctor interrupting The Knightmare’s robbery and continues with the pair avoiding a man who has just woken up; also stand-up comedian Rufus Hound being allowed to say one-liners. The Doctor complains that he hates banter when with Hound’s Sam Swift – yet he was just having a banter session with Me in the scene beforehand. The humor was more consistent in the preceding episode.

Despite the weakness of the comedy “The Woman Who Lived” succeeds because of its character drama and development – explaining the effects of immortality on an individual and the relationship between The Doctor and Me. It also gives us a hint of a post-Clara Doctor Who, who only appears at the end of the episode. Hopefully we will see more from Maisie Williams as Ashildr /Me.

Ommegang Brewing Co. Three Philosophers Beer Review

Monkeys Fighting Robots

While getting my necessities for the New York Mets World Series I had kept my eyes peeled for a beer that felt like a good omen. As I rounded a corner I saw “Three Philosophers” sitting on a shelf and I immediately thought of the three talented Mets pitchers and then realized where it was brewed, Cooperstown. Once I noticed the Hall of Fame connection I was sold. Ommegang Brewing Co. opened in 1997 and has gained notoriety for their special Game of Thrones “Three Eyed Raven” themed brews which released this past April.

Taste

The heavy and dark body offers a rich flavor and sweet aroma. Composed of 98% ale and 2% ale with cherries, this Belgian style quad is a can’t miss. A heavy body with a sweet and fruity aroma is slightly deceptive but the high alcohol content is blended by the variety within the malt.

Body

A dark complexion described as a cherry-chestnut coloration with full carbonation topped with a smooth tan head. Dry wine like taste at the end is a nice compliment to the sweetness of the molasses, malt and cherry flavors.

Price

A 750 ml bottle was $10.99 which is similar to the price of a 32 oz growler at other craft breweries. If you don’t live near a brewery then this is a great substitute that offers a rich, fresh flavor.

Presentation

Very simple tall bottle with a metal fastening atop the cork which creates a cool, elegant vibe.

Final Sip of Three Philosophers

Sweet, caramel mix that offers a great variety of flavors which puts Ommegang “Three Philosophers” in a class of its own.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Jerry Heller (Ex Manager of N.W.A.) is suing NBC Universal, members of N.W.A, and director F Gary Gary for copyright infringement and defamation of character. Jerry Heller is seeking a total of 110 Million dollars in damages plus restitution of profits and gains from N.W.A. Mr. Heller’s attorney is claiming that he never game permission to have his likeness in the film and that Straight Outta Compton is filled with falsehoods that deter people from ever wanting to work with him.
