Watch These Shows – 2016 Winter Anime

Monkeys Fighting Robots

So the 2016 winter anime season is a week in and everything has at least one episode out. Last season I don’t even think I did a list of what I was going to watch, mostly I attribute it to a bad season, but it’s no excuse. This time I am proud to say that I watched at least 18 new shows and won’t even be talking about half of them. Because this article isn’t about those meh or bad shows, this is about those shows that you should go blindly watch because I am telling you to. Just kidding of course, I’ll at least give some explanation about why I chose what I chose.

Dimension W

Dimension W is like a very attractive person you see walking down the hall and then they trip over nothing. They don’t fall down or lose their balance for long, they just rub it off and coDimension Wntinue walking as if nothing happen. And you don’t really notice it because they’re so hot. But then they do it again…

Now the material here is really solid. Mostly because it keeps the premise tight and simple leaving you free to get swept up in the environment (and soon the characters). Even though its simple the first episode focuses on the setting and really only plays with its characters for a couple of minutes but the scenario evolved so naturally, I felt like I was already a part of whats happening. I can only hope that it continues to weave context and story as nice as it did in this first episode. Awesome character art/character design almost reminiscent of the late and great bandai shows like Bebop, Champloo, and Ghost In The Shell (yeah I know GITS is production IG). And while watching this I was getting those same kind of feelings in an updated way. Sure is a big shoe to step into but I totally think it can fill it. The only thing it has going against it is the direction. The director doesn’t seem like they know how to cut and layout an action series. Some of the framing and scene layout seemed off-putting but it will probably improve as the show goes on. Even if it doesn’t it’s not enough to hurt the show. Dimension W is going to be a strong show, just how strong is yet to be seen.

ErasedErased

It’s hard to say some good things about Erased that haven’t already been said. From the first episode I can see that its going to be a super strong show and everyone is already set to love this no matter how it goes. On the other hand, it’s a mystery show, so no matter how well everything is executed (which is awesomely by the way) the mystery itself could ruin it. But that’s only speculation so lets talk about what we’ve seen so far. The mood or moods are amazing. It keeps jerking you back and forth between a few emotional states and every time it does it feels natural and intense. Its letting the atmosphere tell a lot about its characters and giving them a lot of life without ever hearing their feeling. This gives us a lot of time to be able to interpret motivation from characters which is essential in a “good” mystery. Basically what I’m saying is everyone just doesn’t spout out how they feel and I like that.

As for the story itself, it could go a number of places and the fun will be trying to figure that out, how it approaches things and why we should care about whats going on. Certainly a show that I’ll be watching every week as soon as it comes out.

Active Raid

If you don’t know who Goro Tanaguchi is I don’t blame you. He’s the guy mainly known for making the anime Code Geass such a big hit with his amazing directing skills. While Active Raid has all the nice scene transitions and editing that you would expect from a master dActive Raidirector, there are a few things that directing can’t fix. Mainly its the setting, Active Raid has a very bad way of delivering its complicated police structure in the first episode. It basically devolves into characters explaining things to each other even though they already know whats going on. A lot of shows do this and it drives me crazy every time. So while I may not be as invested in this one as the other two, which had much simpler setting and scenarios, I feel like whats its trying to express is worth investing into. Clearly this show has something to say about the way the police system works or should work. But the first episode is so filled with so much jargon that I couldn’t enjoy the cool aesthetics nor take the fight scenes all that seriously. Same goes with the characters, most of them were just exposition robots so i’ll have to wait an episode to see if they’re likable or even fit there roles. But I did see a lot of bad arch-typing so its a toss up. It’s a show that certainly may be more ambitious and have more to say than others this season, which is why its on this list. Plus theres a purple haired mascot hologram girl that I have yet to see, but she shows up on the promo, so she must be important.

Dagashi Kashi

Okay so this show is mainly on here for the share fact that its insane, and we just don’t get enough insane shows. And I mean purely insane, I don’t mean insane/echii shows. I mean stupid and dumb and insane. Dagashi Kashi will not be the show you watch because you are interested in story, character, development, not even romance. It’ll be a show that you watch Dagashi Kashifor how insane it is and you’ll just want to see how long our main character will be able to handle said craziness. You might get a little disturbed but that okay, as long as you find it funny, who cares. Immaturity and obliviousness at its best and will surely be the most polarizing thing on this list. So just watch it for the chance that you might be able to rage about how stupid it is (which is kinda the point). Before you start it though I’m not going to lie, this show will have a lot of things that go over your head if you’re not Japan keen. But mostly the visuals and absurd delivery is what will make the show and the jokes hit so you shouldn’t really have a problem. Sure I’m biased because I love everything about the main heroine as a character. She’s the personification of the most annoying person you’ve ever met and seeing her reek mayhem on this town will be a nice treat. Dagashi Kashi will do exactly what its suppose to do and whats wrong with that?

Dagashi Kashi is streaming on Funimation.com and Crunchyroll.com depending on your region

‘Star Wars’ – Marvel to Debut Poe Dameron Comic

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Poe Dameron was billed as of the “New Big Three” introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But, though he became a fan favorite, little was revealed about Poe in the film. He’s established as the greatest pilot in General Leia’s Resistance, and does get the chance to prove it on screen, but there was potential for so much more. Oscar Isaac should get the chance to explore with his role more in Episode VIII, but, until then, Marvel Comics has fans covered.

USA Today reports that Marvel will add Poe Dameron to their current slate of Star Wars comics. The ongoing book is scheduled to start in April, and will be written by Charles Soule and drawn by Phil Noto.

Marvel Poe Dameron

“…to see people reacting to him so strongly now just feels like we’re hopefully in a great position,” Soule says.

Adds Noto: “I’ve seen people on Twitter and Instagram looking for Poe Dameron in the comics. Now the pressure’s on us to deliver.”

The report states that the series will lead up to the opening scene of The Force Awakens, where Poe meets Lor San Tekka in order to retrieve the map to Luke Skywalker. The creative team looks forward to building on Poe’s character, and exploring the new corners of the galaxy:

“Sometimes it can feel like the Star Wars universe is so well trodden and so many stories have already been told,” Soule explains. “But the way the Episode VII galaxy is set up, there are opportunities for new archetypes almost, and the bad guy we’re working with is going to feel fresh and cool.”

The two are no strangers to the Star Wars comic universe. Soule has two miniseries under his belt: the completed Lando, and Obi-Wan & Anakin currently. Noto, meanwhile, was the artist for the Chewbacca miniseries, and also provided artwork for a number of Young Reader novels.

Marvel already scratched the surface of Poe’s backstory in Star Wars: Shattered Empire, a miniseries that takes place immediately after the end of Return of the Jedi. Poe’s parents are at the center of the story, revealed to be Rebel pilots who personally fought alongside Han, Leia, and even Luke. In fact, Luke gave Poe’s mother Shara Bey a Force Tree at the end of the series. Could this come into play during the new series?

Fans should rest easy, as it seems like Marvel has placed Poe’s character in the right hands:

“It’s silly not to explore the idea of a guy who grew up steeped in the Rebellion and the older Republic and all of those myths and legends,” Soule says. “If you think about it, he grew up the way we did, hearing all of these stories.”

Preview: ‘Dark Knight III: The Master Race’ Spotlights Hal Jordan

Monkeys Fighting Robots

DC Comics released a three-page preview of the Mini-Comic for Book 3 of Dark Knight III: The Master Race Spotlights Hal Jordan Thursday afternoon.

With the next chapter of DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE, readers will learn more about the plans of the newly-freed Kandorians in the main story, but this 12-page supplemental tale sees an alien-looking (for details, check out Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Strikes Again) Hal Jordan’s otherwise idyllic life interrupted by a distress call from Earth. On his arrival, Hal is greeted by three strangers, looking for a God to worship…

This third mini-comic is co-written by Frank Miller and Brian Azzarello, with art breakdowns by John Romita Jr. and finishes by Frank Miller. In addition to the Book 3 periodical version (scheduled for late February), the Collector’s Edition hardcover publishes both the main story and the mini-comic in a same-size “prestige” format approximately 2 weeks after the periodical hits retailer shelves.

Undisputed Collection of Greatest Filmmakers: Michael Bay Edition

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Michael Bay seems fitting to be the first entry into Monkeys Fighting Robots’ Undisputed Collection of Greatest Filmmakers*. There are few directors who have come to personify a generation, for better and worse, while also leaving a cultural crater the size of an asteroid quite like Mr. Bay. Now, having a lasting impact doesn’t necessarily make someone a great director. Hitler and Uwe Boll have had lasting impacts, after all (coincidence that they’re both German? — Just kidding, I’m not comparing a director to Hitler).

Michael Bay is known for being a fascist dictator on set and his ultimate control over the image he presents means we are able to get what each Great Filmmaker must have: a voice. The voice of Michael Bay is one of extreme kinetics; at once slick, commercial and cool yet perverse and self-gratifying. With a few exceptions, there isn’t a director working today who places as much of their unfiltered selves into the images we see.

Michael Bay

Mr. Bay’s filmic eye was honed creating flashy commercials and music videos. Bay is amongst the first swath of narrative directors to emerge working in this fashion. There is a very real sense of commerciality in mainstream feature films and Bay came around at the exact right time when that commerciality deemed itself worthy of its own voice.

His first movie, Bad Boys, was an instant hit. Things were helped with it being headlined by upcoming superstars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence (who, at the time, wasn’t a film superstar but was definitely one in pop culture) but, for the director, it was like kissing a girl (or guy) for the first time. It was clunky, it was jagged at the edges but dammit it was cool.

Michael Bay kissed the girl that was Bad Boys and went immediately to third base, making The RockArmageddon and Pearl Harbor. During this period, his voice was firmly established but not quite understood. With all three being hits, the latter two of this trio cemented Bay as a divisive mainstream star, capable of crafting enormously successful films with enormous set pieces while also being completely tone deaf when given incompatible material.

Michael Bay

In 2003, Mr. Bay once again visited his first kiss and this time went all the way. The resulting offspring was Bad Boys II. Up until this point, Bay’s voice was blunted either by learning the ropes of narrative cinema (Bad Boys) or making films he had no real business making (Pearl Harbor). By the time Bad Boys II came around, Bay was at the height of his filmmaking talents and was allowed to use whatever means necessary to bring the world another chapter in the saga of Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett. During this two and a half hour sun-drenched epic, Michael Bay finally revealed to the world his particular brand of sick. It crept in at the edges of his earlier work but here it was totally unsheathed and brandished like a sword dipped in syphilis.

One of the more interesting things about Michael Bay is his total lack of irony. When he holds an action set piece revolving around dodging human cadavers thrown from a van, there is absolutely no pretension or sense of metaphoric value. It’s just there. If there is no such thing as objectivity in art, Michael Bay is as close as we come to it. He is acutely aware of the subjectiveness his lens provides (especially when it comes to the objectification of women) but he presents it simply as is. It’s what he wants to see. It’s what titillates him. Therefore, it’s what you’re going to see. In Bad Boys II we are able to fully view an artistic statement through the lens of total objectivity. Mr. Bay is not a master manipulator when it comes to theme but fools viewers into thinking he is when baring his soul through the manipulations of his insanely crafted action beats.

Also, he gave us Michael Shannon as a white supremacist.

Warning: this clip from BAD BOYS II is NSFW, including language, violence and general hatefulness. It’s also ace filmmaking.

[embedyt] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BEih56j2AE[/embedyt]

From here, we go into Mr. Bay’s most controversial phase. After having finally produced a bomb in The Island, Michael Bay directed Transformers. I wholeheartedly believe the first movie in this series gets a bit of undue hatred. It’s a fun time at the theater. Some fans with a little too much time on their hands may decry this as an utter mishandling of the series they so cherish but I say that way of thinking is a tad immature. Oh, and guess what Transformers is? Immature. The most accurate criticism leveled at these movies is that they are most definitely not for children. Bay’s voice has been proven to be a wild, dangerous one and filtering it though a movie about children’s toys is completely ill-advised. There are a handful of R-rated horror films I’d rather any 10-year-old watch than a Transformers movie.

If Transformers is decent at best, the less said of Transformers: Revenge of The FallenTransformers: Dark of the Moon and Transformers: Age of Extinction the better. At the very least, what makes these Transformers movies interesting in the slightest is this strange, acceptable filtration of a madman. I pay for my ticket just to see what kind of sick nonsense Bay was able to get past the MPAA and Paramount when making his “kids movies”. We can rant and rave all we want about this series being the decline of human culture but the utter truth is that it reminded us that Michael Bay isn’t some PG-13 hackboy giving everyone a handshake after he tells them how fat their moms are.

No, no. The genius of Michael Bay is when he calls you fat and retarded, spits in your face then hugs you and licks his own saliva off your flesh with a toothy grin.

This is what I like to call Pain & Gain. If we have to bitch and moan about Transformers, I say it’s all worth it for this mean little film. For the first time, Mr. Bay is given a script with a pulse (written by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely of the Captain America series and soon to be Avengers: Infinity War fame) and the perfect subject matter with which to imprint upon. In this world of steroids, creeps and misplaced eroticism, Bay finds his home. It’s like David Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust” in that we finally get to see from which planet Michael Bay hails. The movie is shaggy but never fails to entertain and even manages to be poignant. If Michael Bay never works with Dwayne Johnson again, we’re all losers.

[embedyt] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syfnFLPm0po[/embedyt]

Michael Bay is a rocket in need of correct aiming. His visual touchstones are clear and recognizable even for film neophytes. He is a master craftsman and when matched with the correct, diseased material he transcends standard storytelling and becomes something else entirely. At their best, Michael Bay’s movies are an exploded hole-in-the-wall allowing us to see the wreckage of a man’s soul. That soul isn’t without its flaws but it is pure, it is beautiful and it is mother-effing Michael Bay.

Michael Bay’s newest non-Transformers extravaganza, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi opens this Friday. Go see it.

‘Green Room’ Trailer: Patrick Stewart and His Band of Nazis

Monkeys Fighting Robots

A new teaser for Green Room shows Patrick Stewart leading a band of neo-Nazis, who seek to wipe out a punk-rock band who saw something they shouldn’t have seen. Green Room is the second feature film from director Jeremy Saulnier, whose debut, Blue Ruin was a captivating, understated revenge thriller.

Here is the trailer:

And here is an official synopsis:

Green Room is a brilliantly crafted and wickedly fun horror-thriller starring Patrick Stewart as a diabolical club owner who squares off against an unsuspecting but resilient young punk band.

Down on their luck punk rockers The Ain’t Rights are finishing up a long and unsuccessful tour, and are about to call it quits when they get an unexpected booking at an isolated, run-down club deep in the backwoods of Oregon.  What seems merely to be a third-rate gig escalates into something much more sinister when they witness an act of violence backstage that they weren’t meant to see.  Now trapped backstage, they must face off against the club’s depraved owner, Darcy Banker (Stewart), a man who will do anything to protect the secrets of his nefarious enterprise.  But while Darcy and his henchmen think the band will be easy to get rid of, The Ain’t Rights prove themselves much more cunning and capable than anyone expected, turning the tables on their unsuspecting captors and setting the stage for the ultimate life-or-death showdown.

Intense, emotional, and ingeniously twisted, Green Room is genre filmmaking at its best and most original. Saulnier continues to build his reputation as one of the most exciting and distinctive directors working today, with a movie that’s completely different from his previous, highly acclaimed Blue Ruin, but which is just as risk-taking and even more full of twists. The entire cast deliver first-rate performances, but Patrick Stewart gives a transformative and brilliantly  devious turn as Darcy—elegant yet lethal, droll yet terrifying, Stewart makes the film simply unforgettable.

The film has been running the festival gamut, seemingly forever, and is finally getting a wide release. Green Room will hit theaters in limited release April 1, and will go wide April 15.
