10+ Films To Help You Laugh Your Way Into the New Year

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Trying to get out of that post-holiday season funk? Wanna postpone the back to work mind-grind a little bit longer? Well, here is a list of films that will get you blood pumping and make you laugh your way into the New Year. Happy 2016 y’all!

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

[embedyt] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-X2XzKqBiE[/embedyt]

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a good film to watch because getting back into the grind after the holiday siesta is a hard thing to do. The new year has just begun and aren’t you counting the days until your next holiday? This is the best film ever made to illustrate the joys of taking a ‘mental health’ day. Sometimes you just need to sit back and enjoy life and who can show you how to do that better than the John Hughes and his ‘Ferris’? No one can. So remember the holiday break fondly and dream of those days off long gone as you enjoy a ‘day off’ with Cameron (Alan Ruck), Sloan (Mia Sara), and Ferris (Matthew Broderick). With principle ducking, fancy car driving, and unnecessary dance numbers, how could a movie go wrong? This film is a laugh a minute.

House Party (1990)

[embedyt] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzRfOiNFBkc[/embedyt]

Not all people remember the 1980s/1990s super rap duo Kid ‘n Play, but you should. With hits like Ain’t Gonna Hurt Nobody and Rollin’ With Kid n’ Play, this twosome – Christopher “Kid” Reid and Christopher “Play” Martin – parlayed their success as a musical act into a string of slapstick comedy films. House Party is the story of ‘Kid’ a high schooler who is being raised by his strict single-father (the late Robin Harris). His best-friend play invites him to a party at his house but he has been grounded due to a fight at school. Kid sneaks out of the house when his dad falls asleep and the hijinks are off and running. With bullies, sketchy cops, and a kicking soundtrack you can’t go wrong – see if you can spot Martin Lawrence.

PCU (1994)

[embedyt] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xhno9sBWI88[/embedyt]

This cleverly, acronym titled film PCU Port Chester University – is a great couch surfing film. This film makes satire of the sometimes overly ‘political correctness’ that goes on in society. When preppy, clumsy pre-frosh Tom Lawrence (Chris Young) goes to visit the school over for weekend he is slated to stay in the wildest communal house, The Pit, on campus. His tour guide for the visit is James ‘Droz’ Andrews (Jeremy Piven) the wildest man on campus. Port Chester University, not unlike Greendale Community College, has gone so far overboard in their attempt diversify and civilize campus life – Greek organizations are banned and political correctness has taken the fun out of college. When The Pit is threatened to be closed for policy violations and fines, Droz and his housemates Gutter (Jon Favreau), Mullaney (Alex Désert) and the gang must pull together to throw the mother of all ‘rent house parties” in order to save their home – check out George Clinton and P-Funk All-Stars as the make the party EPIC!

Finch, the neurotic one of the bunch, spreads rumors around school about his sexual prowess. Oz (the jock) joins an a capella group to gain the attention of a pretty smart girl. Kevin (the stead) loving boyfriend, tries to persuade his girl to go ‘all the way’ with him. And hopeless bumbling Jim, the nerdy, pie molesting Internet sensation, attempts to woo the hot foreign exchange student. It will all come to head the Steve Stiffler’s (Seann William Scott) after party. Talk about finishing high school with a bang! Check out How I Met Your Mother‘s Alyson Hannigan and her flute work.

Superbad (2007)

[embedyt] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1JKWi7Mc8U[/embedyt]

This film is hilariously ridiculous and you will most definitely love to watch it! The story centers around two BFFs, Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera), their dorky, affable whipping boy Fogell (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) at the end of their high school days. Evan and Seth are usually dismissed by the popular kids, but they get invited to a party and spend most of the day in pursuit of alcohol for the partygoers with the help of their nerdy friend. Armed with this Fogel and his newly procured fake ID declaring his name simply, McLovin, the threesome has a night for the ages. Fueled by the possibility of hooking up with girls and leaving a mark before in the minds of their classmates before they go off to college, these guys will stop at nothing to have a night to remember. This flick has bumbling cops, drunk girls, party brawls, and laughs that will not quit. You’ll be ‘McLovin’ it!

All the set-ups end disastrously, but he meets laid-back Sydney (Segal) at an open house he is hosting and they hit it off. No official announcement has come from Disney or Lucasfilm.

The story continues that Brian Muir, the man that sculpted Darth Vader’s helmet for 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope has recreated the Darth Vader costume for Rogue One. There is no word on how big a part Vader will have in the film or who will wear the costume.

Disney does have plans for Darth Vader past Rogue One, as they plan to release a Star Wars film once a year, with no end date in sight.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is directed by Gareth Edwards, and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen (IP Man), Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen of Hannibal fame, Alan Tudyk (as a motion capture character), and Riz Ahmed.

‘Daredevil’ Showrunner Down Plays Frank Miller’s Elektra Comments

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The second season of Marvel’s Daredevil is set to premiere on March 18 with the introduction of the Punisher and Elektra.

Last week the creator of Elektra, Frank Miller had some harsh words for the Netflix series.

“They can call it whatever you want, but it will not be the real Elektra. Yes, I’m her father,” said Miller at Brazil’s CCXP.

Yesterday, the showrunner of the series Doug Petrie has since heard the comments and responds very diplomatically to Entertainment Weekly.

“God bless him, it’s his prerogative. I’m a huge fan of what he did, so the [criticism] doesn’t go both ways. I wouldn’t say, ‘What does Frank Miller know?’ I’m so inspired by him and what he achieved and I’m trying to take it further and enrich her. She’s an empowered woman with her own agency, she’s nobody’s victim,” said Petrie.

Daredevil is Executive Produced by Petrie, Marco Ramirez and Drew Goddard, along with Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb. The series stars Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Jon Bernthal, Elodie Yung and Rosario Dawson.

Season two of Marvel’s Daredevil will be available to stream globally on March 18 at 12:01 a.m. PT on Netflix.

Elektra Natchios first appeared in Daredevil #168 (January 1981).

George Miller Has Two More ‘Mad Max’ Tales To Tell

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Earlier this week Cindy Williams of Page Six published an article stating that director George Miller will never make another Mad Max movie. Three days later Miller clarified his comments to The Wrap.

“That was a completely garbled interview. I was in New York and it was so noisy and the journalist was asking me questions on a red carpet at the National Board of Review. She completely got the wrong fragments of information that were just not true. I said no, [another ‘Mad Max’ movie] will not be next, and she took that to mean I never wanted to make another ‘Mad Max.’ It won’t necessarily be next, but I have two more stories,” said Miller.

On Thursday, Miller, and Mad Max: Fury Road were nominated for Best Motion Picture of the Year and Best Achievement in Directing. Miller has been nominated for six Oscars with one win, Best Animated Feature Film of the Year in 2006 for Happy Feet.

The working title for the next Mad Max film is Mad Max: The Wasteland.

40 Ounces of Freedom! ‘Dogfish Head’s Sah’tea and BFM La Meule’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Because What’s More American than the Over Consumption of Mediocrity?

These beers (Sah’tea and La Meule) are far from mediocrity, but that’s the tagline of my spiel, so I’m sticking with it. I have started writing this half-way into drinking, so there are new rules this week:

Unnecessary Rules:
1. I must keep the alcohol in the bottle I purchased it in!
2. I DO WHAT I WANT!
3. I ain’t got time for rules this week!

The truth is, I started watching a Netflix, Oscar-nominated documentary, “Winter on Fire,” which is about the Ukrainian Revolution, and it made me want a beer, so I started early. It was quite a powerful film and was very thought provoking about humanity. As the kiddies would say, “I got the feels,” BUT that’s not the point and quite possibly for another article on this great website (wink, wink).

Anywho, I snapped my Swiss Mountain brewed Brasserie des Franches-Montagnes (BFM) La Meule open, and was immediately greeted with a sizzling sound and strong yeasty smell, quite reminiscent of vinegar even. Why it’s logo is a cool little black gecko/lizard, I have no idea. There ain’t no such animal in the Swiss Mountains!

Sorry, back to the beer. It reciprocates the same yeasty, sagey smell; in flavor and in textural feel when consuming its golden ale brew. That’s not to be dissuaded, if you can find it; try it. The ale is full flavored, but still smooth, light, and drinkable. It gives a very comfortable sensation and lasts until the last drop. I say drink it!

Up next, Sah’tea. This 27 oz bottle is my third cup of tea today. I’ve had a blend of green, a blend of black (how I like my men), and a blend of 9% alcohol. This Dogfish Head beer is said to based off a traditional 9th-century Finnish recipe, where it was brewed with rye and juniper berries, under heated rocks. This brew just happened to add black chai tea into the process, and you can definitely taste it. It’s a very rich spicy taste. A good medium of different flavors, while not being overwhelmed.

Overall these beers gave a mean tasteful quality. I got what I paid for and it wasn’t cheap. 37 ounces of deliciousness. Even the beer, that is Swiss French “La Meule” was good, and I have a staunch stance of things I can’t stand like “people who are intolerant of other people’s cultures… and the [French]!”-Don’t worry that’s an altered version of an “Austin Powers: Goldmember” joke, and even if you are offended just think, a 24-year-old man who is addicted to Charms Blow Pops has written this!

I wasn’t even sure I’d enjoy these beers with both having heavy sediment lurking at the bottom, but obviously, I did. Go out and enjoy them responsibly.

Remembering Alan Rickman: Top Five Character Performances

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Yesterday acclaimed British actor, Alan Rickman, passed away at the age of 69 from cancer. The world was quick to add touching tributes to the actor on social media. A particularly touching one was this, from friend and co-star in the Harry Potter films, Daniel Radcliffe.

Alan Rickman was an English actor and director, who appeared on both stage and screen, often playing the villain. His big break came in the role of Vicomte de Valmont in the stage production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses in 1985. He is more widely known for his role as Hans Gruber, the calculating villain from the first Die Hard film (more on this later).

Although he is more commonly known for playing villains, he has also played leading roles in Truly, Madly, Deeply and Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility. For his role of Rasputin in Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny, he won a Golden Globe Award, an Emmy Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Now here is my list of top five favourite performances.

5. Alexander Dane – Galaxy Quest.

Dr Lazarus

In the role of Alexander Dane/Dr Lazarus, Rickman was joyous to watch as an actor who hated to play the character he was most loved for. He had some of the best lines in the film, when delivering scathing attacks on his fellow co-stars. The highlight of the movie for me, is when Lazarus finally gives in and utters the catchphrase he has come to hate so much, “By Grabthars hammer, by the suns of Warvan, you shall be avenged.” It goes from a pretentious line, to the words that give a dying man peace. When delivered as only Rickman can, it becomes one of the most emotional scenes in the movie.

4. The Metatron – Dogma.

The Metatron

This is my guilty pleasure film. There are so many good performances in this movie, but the one which stole the movie is Rickman’s portrayal of Metatron – The Voice of God. Metatron is an angel who is permanently annoyed, and its mainly to do with the lack of respect humans have towards angels. The scene when he first appears is a great one to highlight Rickman’s talent for comedy. Take a look at it below, but be warned, there is some strong language.

[embedyt] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTOeAcGHKms[/embedyt]

Throughout the film, he gets to say some of the best lines. Again it isn’t a role you would expect him in, but it ultimately works. If you haven’t seen it, then I highly recommend watching it as soon as possible.

3. Severus Snape – Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part Two

Severus Snape

When I read Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, and I got to the part where Snape meets his demise, I can remember thinking that I couldn’t wait to see Rickman in the scene. Well he certainly didn’t disappoint did he? The way that Rickman plays this scene and the flashbacks, is nothing short of spectacular. Whether it’s when he walks into the bedroom to find Harry’s mum dead and floored by grief, to producing his patronus, and Dumbledore asking “After all this time?” and the heartbreaking reply, a simple “Always.”

The great thing about Rickman being Snape was after seeing the first film; I decided to start reading the books. Reading the lines of Snape was all the more enjoyable when you have the voice of Alan Rickman in your head. I can’t imagine any other voice being Snape’s.

2. Hans Gruber – Die Hard.

Hans Gruber

Alan Rickman showed other bad guys how to make this look good. Hans Gruber is the epitome of cool in Die Hard. When I first saw the film, I had never wanted a bad guy to survive as much as I did Hans. The way that Rickman played it, a was genius. The scenes where he has conversations with John Mclane are brilliant to watch and he gives as good as he gets. I particularly like the scene where he’s discovered and pretends he’s a hostage and goes from cool and calm, to utterly terrified in seconds. He doesn’t fit the typical mould when it comes to one liners either. He has more thought out speeches that he delivers with authority and menace that just send shivers down you back. One my favourites is ” When they touch down, we’ll blow the roof, they’ll spend a month sifting through rubble, and by the time they figure out what went wrong, we’ll be sitting on a beach, earning twenty percent”

This performance made other film bad guys stand up and pay attention. There were lots of them who tried to imitate Hans, but no-one ever came close to it.

1.The Sheriff of Nottingham – Robin Hood the Prince of Thieves.

Sheriff of Nottingham

Some may say its a controversial decision, but I stand by my choice. This is the most personal choice on the list, as this film is the earliest one I remember going to without a parent. I remember after it finished, everyone was talking about how cool Robin Hood was, and while I agreed he’s cool, I had much more fun when The Sheriff was on-screen. It wasn’t just the lines that he got to say, it was the looks he would give while delivering them. He was a like a tornado through the film, and such a physical one that it must have exhausted him.

For me this is Rickman at his finest, chewing up the scenery and everyone around him.

It is so much fun to watch him in this part, and it must have been a lot of fun to play. Again he was a villain that I didn’t want to see caught, so that I could see more of him on-screen.

So there is my list of favourite performances. Although it was nice to look back on his career, I would have much preferred writing this further down the line and seeing what else he had to offer.

Alan Rickman will be sorely missed but fondly remembered by millions of fans all over the world. Always.

Watch These Shows – 2016 Winter Anime

Monkeys Fighting Robots

So the 2016 winter anime season is a week in and everything has at least one episode out. Last season I don’t even think I did a list of what I was going to watch, mostly I attribute it to a bad season, but it’s no excuse. This time I am proud to say that I watched at least 18 new shows and won’t even be talking about half of them. Because this article isn’t about those meh or bad shows, this is about those shows that you should go blindly watch because I am telling you to. Just kidding of course, I’ll at least give some explanation about why I chose what I chose.

Dimension W

Dimension W is like a very attractive person you see walking down the hall and then they trip over nothing. They don’t fall down or lose their balance for long, they just rub it off and coDimension Wntinue walking as if nothing happen. And you don’t really notice it because they’re so hot. But then they do it again…

Now the material here is really solid. Mostly because it keeps the premise tight and simple leaving you free to get swept up in the environment (and soon the characters). Even though its simple the first episode focuses on the setting and really only plays with its characters for a couple of minutes but the scenario evolved so naturally, I felt like I was already a part of whats happening. I can only hope that it continues to weave context and story as nice as it did in this first episode. Awesome character art/character design almost reminiscent of the late and great bandai shows like Bebop, Champloo, and Ghost In The Shell (yeah I know GITS is production IG). And while watching this I was getting those same kind of feelings in an updated way. Sure is a big shoe to step into but I totally think it can fill it. The only thing it has going against it is the direction. The director doesn’t seem like they know how to cut and layout an action series. Some of the framing and scene layout seemed off-putting but it will probably improve as the show goes on. Even if it doesn’t it’s not enough to hurt the show. Dimension W is going to be a strong show, just how strong is yet to be seen.

Dimension W is streaming in Funimation.com

ErasedErased

It’s hard to say some good things about Erased that haven’t already been said. From the first episode I can see that its going to be a super strong show and everyone is already set to love this no matter how it goes. On the other hand, it’s a mystery show, so no matter how well everything is executed (which is awesomely by the way) the mystery itself could ruin it. But that’s only speculation so lets talk about what we’ve seen so far. The mood or moods are amazing. It keeps jerking you back and forth between a few emotional states and every time it does it feels natural and intense. Its letting the atmosphere tell a lot about its characters and giving them a lot of life without ever hearing their feeling. This gives us a lot of time to be able to interpret motivation from characters which is essential in a “good” mystery. Basically what I’m saying is everyone just doesn’t spout out how they feel and I like that.

As for the story itself, it could go a number of places and the fun will be trying to figure that out, how it approaches things and why we should care about whats going on. Certainly a show that I’ll be watching every week as soon as it comes out.

Erased is streaming on Crunchyroll.com

Active Raid

If you don’t know who Goro Tanaguchi is I don’t blame you. He’s the guy mainly known for making the anime Code Geass such a big hit with his amazing directing skills. While Active Raid has all the nice scene transitions and editing that you would expect from a master dActive Raidirector, there are a few things that directing can’t fix. Mainly its the setting, Active Raid has a very bad way of delivering its complicated police structure in the first episode. It basically devolves into characters explaining things to each other even though they already know whats going on. A lot of shows do this and it drives me crazy every time. So while I may not be as invested in this one as the other two, which had much simpler setting and scenarios, I feel like whats its trying to express is worth investing into. Clearly this show has something to say about the way the police system works or should work. But the first episode is so filled with so much jargon that I couldn’t enjoy the cool aesthetics nor take the fight scenes all that seriously. Same goes with the characters, most of them were just exposition robots so i’ll have to wait an episode to see if they’re likable or even fit there roles. But I did see a lot of bad arch-typing so its a toss up. It’s a show that certainly may be more ambitious and have more to say than others this season, which is why its on this list. Plus theres a purple haired mascot hologram girl that I have yet to see, but she shows up on the promo, so she must be important.

Active Raid is streaming on Crunchyroll.com

Dagashi Kashi

Okay so this show is mainly on here for the share fact that its insane, and we just don’t get enough insane shows. And I mean purely insane, I don’t mean insane/echii shows. I mean stupid and dumb and insane. Dagashi Kashi will not be the show you watch because you are interested in story, character, development, not even romance. It’ll be a show that you watch Dagashi Kashifor how insane it is and you’ll just want to see how long our main character will be able to handle said craziness. You might get a little disturbed but that okay, as long as you find it funny, who cares. Immaturity and obliviousness at its best and will surely be the most polarizing thing on this list. So just watch it for the chance that you might be able to rage about how stupid it is (which is kinda the point). Before you start it though I’m not going to lie, this show will have a lot of things that go over your head if you’re not Japan keen. But mostly the visuals and absurd delivery is what will make the show and the jokes hit so you shouldn’t really have a problem. Sure I’m biased because I love everything about the main heroine as a character. She’s the personification of the most annoying person you’ve ever met and seeing her reek mayhem on this town will be a nice treat. Dagashi Kashi will do exactly what its suppose to do and whats wrong with that?

Dagashi Kashi is streaming on Funimation.com and Crunchyroll.com depending on your region

‘Star Wars’ – Marvel to Debut Poe Dameron Comic

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Poe Dameron was billed as of the “New Big Three” introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But, though he became a fan favorite, little was revealed about Poe in the film. He’s established as the greatest pilot in General Leia’s Resistance, and does get the chance to prove it on screen, but there was potential for so much more. Oscar Isaac should get the chance to explore with his role more in Episode VIII, but, until then, Marvel Comics has fans covered.

USA Today reports that Marvel will add Poe Dameron to their current slate of Star Wars comics. The ongoing book is scheduled to start in April, and will be written by Charles Soule and drawn by Phil Noto.

“…to see people reacting to him so strongly now just feels like we’re hopefully in a great position,” Soule says.

Adds Noto: “I’ve seen people on Twitter and Instagram looking for Poe Dameron in the comics. Now the pressure’s on us to deliver.”

The report states that the series will lead up to the opening scene of The Force Awakens, where Poe meets Lor San Tekka in order to retrieve the map to Luke Skywalker. The creative team looks forward to building on Poe’s character, and exploring the new corners of the galaxy:

“Sometimes it can feel like the Star Wars universe is so well trodden and so many stories have already been told,” Soule explains. “But the way the Episode VII galaxy is set up, there are opportunities for new archetypes almost, and the bad guy we’re working with is going to feel fresh and cool.”

The two are no strangers to the Star Wars comic universe. Soule has two miniseries under his belt: the completed Lando, and Obi-Wan & Anakin currently. Noto, meanwhile, was the artist for the Chewbacca miniseries, and also provided artwork for a number of Young Reader novels.

Marvel already scratched the surface of Poe’s backstory in Star Wars: Shattered Empire, a miniseries that takes place immediately after the end of Return of the Jedi. Poe’s parents are at the center of the story, revealed to be Rebel pilots who personally fought alongside Han, Leia, and even Luke. In fact, Luke gave Poe’s mother Shara Bey a Force Tree at the end of the series. Could this come into play during the new series?

Fans should rest easy, as it seems like Marvel has placed Poe’s character in the right hands:

“It’s silly not to explore the idea of a guy who grew up steeped in the Rebellion and the older Republic and all of those myths and legends,” Soule says. “If you think about it, he grew up the way we did, hearing all of these stories.”
