6 New, Returning TV Shows To Watch in July

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Several new and returning TV shows begin this month.

If you’re trying to find a great series to watch, but don’t know where to start, don’t worry. We’ve got you covered.

What to Watch – Top Pick

Mr. Robot – July 13, USA

Last summer’s critically acclaimed hit, returns July 13.

Mr. Robot is full of twists and turns and catches you off guard.

Rami Malek stars as Elliot Alderson, a cyber-security engineer who gets pulled into an underground hacker group called fsociety. The group’s goal is to take down a company called Evil Corp.

Mr. Robot is well-crafted and highly addictive, and it’s probably the best show about hackers ever made.

The second season was recently expanded from 10 to 12 episodes. It added several newcomers, including Grace Gummer, Sandrine Holt, and Craig Robinson.

If you haven’t watched Mr. Robot, do yourself a favor, stop whatever you’re doing and go watch it now.

What to Watch – Everything Else

The Night Of – July 10, HBO

The Night Of is an eight-part crime drama loosely adapted from the 2008 BBC series Criminal Justice. John Turturro (Fading Gigolo) stars as a defense attorney whose Pakistani-American client is accused of murdering a woman on New York’s Upper West Side.

The limited series examines New York City’s legal system and law enforcement through a complicated murder case.

James Gandolfini was originally attached to star, but Turturro stepped in after the actor’s death.

HBO needs a great drama, especially after season two of True Detective disappointed critics and fans alike. The Night Of might be it.

Suits – July 13, USA

At the end of season five, Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) turned himself in to save his partner and mentor Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) from facing prison time.

Many fans have speculated about a possible time jump to the end of Mike’s sentence in season six. But according to a Hollywood Reporter interview with show creator Aaron Korsh, things pick up right where the finale left off:

“We’re coming back right where we left off. Much of the time when we land on a huge, earth-shattering event in our world, we contemplate a time jump. It’s probably just the way I think about things, but I always end up feeling like if we’re just going to time-jump out of it, what was the purpose of ending there?”

Meanwhile, Harvey, Jessica, and Louis will spend the season figuring out how to pick up the pieces and rebuild the firm.

Stranger Things – July 15, Netflix

This 80s-inspired supernatural series is set in Indiana and focuses on a group of young boys who try to find their friend who vanished.

As a result, the trailer gives off a very Spielberg-like vibe, think E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, mixed with Super 8.

Best of all, it’s a Netflix show, which means you can binge all eight episodes the day it’s released.

Winona Ryder, Matthew Modine, and David Harbour star.

Vice Principals – July 17, HBO

HBO is adding another comedy series from Eastbound & Down creators Danny McBride and Jody Hill to its roster.

McBride and Walton Goggins (Justified) star as two vice principals competing for the top spot at their high school after the principal decides to retire.

It seems like HBO is pretty confident in the show since it already renewed it for a second season.

Looking: The Movie – July 23, HBO

Looking was a fantastic show about three gay best friends in San Francisco navigating the complexities of life and love. It never quite found its audience on HBO and was canceled after only two seasons.

However, HBO gave producers a chance to wrap up storylines with a made-for-TV movie.

Do yourself a favor, go back and watch this series from the beginning before the film premieres.

‘Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates’ Awkwardly Mixes Heart & Humor

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates Is A Vacation Away From The Average Comedy

At times ‘Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates‘ can be a bit rough around the edges. Something about that mixed with the already awkward comedic style adds to the charm of the film. Director Jake Szymanski is on to something with this surprisingly unique summer comedy. This is even “based on a true story“.

Pairing together Zac Efron with Adam Devine was a great choice but Anna Kendrick & Aubrey Plaza shine together. The girls bounce jokes off each other with ease, forcing the boys to keep up with them. Keeping up with them is no problem for Devine as he eats up the material. His work on Comedy Central’sWorkaholics‘ is notable but seeing him star in a feature film makes his future even brighter.

Breaking Down The Film:

While the story is simple enough, something about ‘Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates‘ makes it hard to compare to another film. At times it is raunchy like an ‘American Pie‘ or dives into moments of a slapstick comedy but it still keeps this unique comedic tone. We start off with a montage opening credits of Mike and Dave’s previous fun times. Immediately, we cut to their parent’s telling them to clean up their act. They show the aftermath of the “fun” moments we saw in the montage; slightly breaking the fourth wall and showing how insane these two guys are.

The film, while touching on comedy tropes, still found a way to not rely on tired jokes. One of the most notable instances being the fact they avoided any real racial jokes toward the relationship between Mike and Dave’s sister and her black fiancee. Refreshing because lazy bits like that have been used in comedy films for decades. Instead, they found other ways to “shock the audience” like a massage scene that made one critic in my screening cover their eyes in modesty.

“TWO HANDS! PUSHING THE POP! PUSHING THE POP!”
Mike Strangle (Adam Devine)

In a film about the titular Mike (Adam Devine) & Dave (Zac Efron), it’s a surprise to see how much they allowed the dynamic duo of Alice (Anna Kendrick) and Tatiana (Aubrey Plaza) to steal the show. Plaza is the one who caught my eye the most; she fits perfectly into this awkward universe. Watching her verbal tease and abuse Devine’s Mike was hilarious. I’m so glad those two were paired as their drastically different acting styles blended well together.

Not many complaints for the film other than some minor filmmaking issues. Obvious ADR voice-over work and some over-the-shoulder shots looking disjointed to their wide shot counterpart were some of the only noteworthy problem. With as wildly fun as this film was, those fixable critiques wouldn’t be noticeable to an average cinema-goer. The good surely does outweigh any of the bad.

Review: ‘Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates’ Is Respectable As F*ck

Monkeys Fighting Robots

I’m still amazed that Zac Efron has become one of Hollywood’s leading comedy actors. It’s gotten to the point where his name automatically lends credence to a film’s ability to make you laugh. Throw in a couple of more conventional comedians like Adam Devine and Aubrey Plaza, as well as another multi-talented performer such as Anna Kendrick, and you have a recipe for hilarity. And as fate would have it, these exact four have joined forces in Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates, the latest flick from the writers of the Neighbors duology.

Mike & Dave is the story of two brothers with a long history of ruining family gatherings with their shenanigans. Their family is sick of it, so Mike (Devine) and Dave (Efron) are given an ultimatum: they must bring nice, respectable dates to their younger sister’s upcoming wedding in Hawaii. Enter Alice (Kendrick) and Tatiana (Plaza), two girls who are neither nice nor respectable, but who feel like they deserve a free tropical vacation. They dress the part, manipulate fate to meet the boys, and the four travel to the Aloha State where everything proceeds to go to hell.

Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates

There isn’t anything new or surprising about this story; it’s been done before and it will be done again. But that isn’t a bad thing. Some of history’s best films, comedy or not, have been built on clichés. The magic is in finding something new and special to add to the old recipe.

In Mike & Dave, that special ingredient is the acting. Strong comedic performances lift this movie from being trite and mediocre to being something worth watching. Efron, Devine, Kendrick, and Plaza are all really good at making people laugh, and they have amazing chemistry with one another. Even lesser known players like the bride (Sugar Lyn Beard) and groom (Sam Richardson) are given their moments to shine, and they do not squander them. A picture like this one is less about having a groundbreaking story, and more about letting brilliant comedians off their leashes to do what they do best.

Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates
Beard is a flat out scene stealer with her physical comedy.

Most comedy movies today suffer from a serious problem; they’re built on a foundation of lazy writing. Filmmakers rely too heavily on jokes over other sources of humor, and it results in a generic and predictable work. But Mike & Dave is refreshing in that it incorporates some great visuals to take pressure off the writing. Director Jake Szymanski really uses the frame for all it’s worth, and the actors just know how to do physical comedy right. The writing isn’t bad either, but it’s still nice to see a comedy that does more than just tell jokes.

Mike & Dave is the latest project from Andrew Jay Cohen & Brendan O’Brien, the team that wrote both Neighbors pictures.

Simply put, if you liked those films (as many did), there’s a good chance you’ll dig this one as well.

Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates has one job: it has to make you laugh. In the end, it accomplishes that job quite well. It might not always be clever (or classy) in the way it goes about making you laugh, but so what? The filmmakers weren’t trying to go out and make a new Blazing Saddles or Annie Hall. They just wanted to provide audiences with a fun way to kill 98 minutes during an otherwise bland movie season. I can appreciate that myself, and I’d strongly urge you to check out Mike & Dave over the latest Purge or Independence Day.

Review: ‘Brutal Nature’ #3: Battle Erupts

Monkeys Fighting Robots

ICH’s people are under attack! The Spaniards continue to raze villages in an attempt to draw out the shapeshifting warrior. Now, ICH intends to give them what they want… he’s going to bring the fight to them!

Writing

With his soul searching complete, Ich decides to go on the offensive. Though he was conflicted about how to use his powers and what they would make him, he realizes he has no choice but to fight back. Unfortunately, this means he has to become just as violent and barbaric as the Spaniards.

Using these methods is starting to weigh on Ich, but he has no choice but to move forward if he wishes to stop innocent people from getting hurt. Luciano Saracino has really crafted a great character whose powers can be used to save others, but can also take his soul if used improperly.

BrutalNature_03_cvrSUB

Artwork

The artwork remains fantastic. Ariel Olivetti’s work is as dynamic and on point as it was in the first issue. This time he takes the time to give Ich some new forms to change into after putting on the different masks. The first is a monstrous scorpion which looks like it was ripped out of someone’s nightmares. The second looks like a shrunken version of a Rancor. Both of these transformations are used to tear apart his enemies and seek the proper revenge.

Conclusion

The series has been at an intense level of quality so far. Both of these creators just have to stick the landing and give the people a satisfying ending to truly make this series a masterpiece. Will Ich be able to stop the Spaniards without giving in and losing himself in the process? Or is he destined to become a beast who only craves blood?

Once this series is complete and these issues are bound together into a graphic novel it will make this series a perfect gift for fans of historical fiction and hyper violence. One you can safely give to fans of independent comics who want something a bit less mainstream and a bit more adult in their stories.

Kevin Smith Wants To Direct An Episode Of ‘Arrow’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In a recent interview with Den of Geek, Kevin Smith talked about the possibility of him directing an episode of Arrow:

“Oh my god, I would love that so much. I’ve not heard from anybody over there, even though I’ve talked about it in the press quite a bit and stuff.

He then revealed that he is directing an upcoming episode of The Flash, along with expressing interest in bringing Onomatopeia to Arrow:

I know I’m going back to The Flash, first week of September, to direct episode 7 of season 3. Still haven’t heard anything back from Arrow. You know, I wish, it would be amazing because I would love to write and direct Onomatopoeia in the show. Um, but I know they’re doing – what is it? – Wild Dog this year, as well as Vigilante, so maybe they’re just like ‘we don’t need you’, or whatever. But, at the moment, anyone over there raises a flag; I’m like ‘please, let me in!’ That’d be fun as f**k.”

Do you want to see Smith direct an episode of Arrow? Drop a comment down below and let us know.

The Flash returns on Tuesday, October 4, while season 5 of Arrow is kicked off on Wednesday, October 5.

The Russo Brothers Are Adapting ‘The Warriors’ For TV

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Anthony and Joe Russo are busy guys these days. Deadline is reporting that the fraternal filmmakers have announced their plans to adapt 1979’s The Warriors as a one hour TV drama. The Russos will be producing the project alongside Paramount TV and Hulu.

The Warriors

The report states that the Russos’ take “will honor the original film while adding its own unique brand of grit, pulp, sex and violence.” Anthony and Joe will team up with Frank Baldwin to write the script, while no director has signed on as of yet.

The Russo Brothers have gained fame over recent years due to their work on Marvel films. They directed both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, and are slated to direct the two-part Avengers: Infinity War.

The Warriors centers on a New York City street gang that must make its way back to its home turf after being framed for the murder of a rival gang leader. The original film was itself based on a novel from 1965.

This is a developing story and more details will be reported as they become available.
