Set Photos Reveal Tricia Helfer On The Set Of ‘Lucifer’ Season Two

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica, Powers, Suits) was recently cast as Lucifer’s mother in the second season of the FOX television show. Lucifer was one of several comic book shows that launched in the 2015/2016 television series but it is probably the one that veers the furthest from the source material. However, the cast had great chemistry and it did some fun things with religious mythology. At the end of the first season it was reveal that Lucifer’s (Tom Ellis) mother had escaped hell. YVRShoots caught the series filming around Vancouver as LA and released some set photos.

“Trapped in Hell for thousands of years by God (her ex-husband), the Mother of Angels is now free on Earth. Once reunited with Lucifer, it will become clear that she’s the one he takes after. Mom is fearless and has a strong conviction for who she is and what she deserves. However, mother and son do not share the same opinion when it comes to humanity. Everything that fascinates Lucifer about people repels Mom — a disdain that’s highlighted by that fact that Mom’s trapped in a human body for her stay on Earth. Lucifer’s desperate to find out what Mom’s up to, but she claims that all she wants is to spend time with her sons again. But can the devil’s mom really be that innocent?” via TV Line

Review: ‘Secret Life Of Pets’ Is Funny And Captures The Subtle Nuances Of Animals

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Title: The Secret Life of Pets
Director: Chris Renaud and Yarrow Cheney (co-director)
Summary: A terrier named Max regularly invites his friends to hang out at his place while his owner is gone, but his quiet life is upended when said owner also takes in Duke, a stray mutt whom Max instantly dislikes.

It’s been a very mixed bag when it comes to animation this year. There have been two fabulous entries in the forms of Zootopia and Finding Dory, but there have also been terrible movies such as Angry Birds. This isn’t that uncommon since animation is usually targeted at kids and some people just don’t seem to understand how kids think and how to market to them. After Finding Dory I almost forgot about Secret Life of Pets until a friend mentioned that he wanted to come with me when I got the screening invite. The trailer looked cute but I wondered if there was anything else beyond the surface level of the “this is what pets do when we’re not home” joke.

The Secret Life of Pets is a very cute little movie that is funny enough for both parents and kids that everyone should walk out of the theater happy.

The Secret Life of Pets still

As I’ve often mentioned in the past there is a difference between a kids movie and a family movie. I also believe that making a movie geared toward children is not an excuse to be lazy but to try harder. I was quite pleased by Secret Life of Pets that it seemed to understand that being geared towards kids didn’t mean that adults in the audience couldn’t enjoy it, too. The best things about the movie are the little details. The writers and animators have truly captured the little things that cats, dogs and other pets do. There is a running joke among pet owners that dogs have no sense of time and will react the same whether you’re done for five minutes or five hours. The Secret Life of Pets acknowledges things like that and does it extremely well.

It is helped along by an absolutely fantastic voice cast. My favorite was Gidget (voice by Jenny Slate) a little fluffy white dog that reminded me so much of my own family dog that it made me laugh. Her voice was exactly how I pictured my dog would talk and her little mannerisms were amazing. I also loved Tiberius (voice by Albert Brooks) a pet Hawk who spends the entire movie doing the whole “friend not food” thing to hilarious results. The entire cast is great though and the duo of Max (voice by Louis C.K.) and Duke (voice by Eric Stonestreet) are the central part of the story and their growing friendship is believable. It makes sense that Max is threatened by this new dog that is suddenly in his life when he has been the center of his owners world for so long. The movie hinges on the two of them learning to like and trust each other and it works.

It’s not a perfect movie, unfortunately. The pacing felt a little off and when you strip away all of the funny little jokes it is basically Homeward Bound minus the cat and in New York. I also kept getting distracted by the fact that both of the dogs should have been microchipped and that there shouldn’t have been an issue with them getting home, but maybe that was me overthinking things. Snowball (voice by Kevin Hart) is one of those things that either works or doesn’t. I think kids are going to like seeing this cute little bunny who is actually homicidal, but I’m not sure Hart is the best at escaping his own personality. Sometimes I could only hear Kevin Hart talking instead of getting lost in this character.

The Secret Life of Pets is not the best animated movie of the year but it is on the higher end of the spectrum. I think that kids are going to go insane for it as they beg for a bunch of new toys, but there are also enough jokes that adults in the audience will walk away just as happy. It’s not great but it’s still very good.

Sit Down and Watch Anna Kendrick in ‘Table 19’ Trailer

Monkeys Fighting Robots

I’m going to take a shot in the dark and say Table 19 wasn’t on your radar. If you’re anything like me, however, you’ll want to look out for this wedding comedy. It stars Anna Kendrick, June Squibb, Stephen Merchant, Wyatt Russell (Everybody Wants Some!!), Craig Robinson, Andy Daly and Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel). It’s written by Mark and Jay Duplass. And it’s directed by Jeffrey Blitz (Rocket Science, Comedy Central’s excellent Review). I mean, what more do you need? How about a trailer? Well, by golly, you’re in lucky.

Table 19 centers around Eloise (Kendrick), an ex-maid of honor recently dumped by the best man (Russell) via text, who decides to attend her oldest friend’s wedding anyway, particularly in spite. But when she comes, she finds herself seated at Table 19, the one reserved for “random” people of the party in the back. Those seated around the misfit table get to know each other through the festivities and, in doing so, they develop an unusual bond during the proceedings of this holy matrimony.

I gotta admit: this trailer kinda underwhelmed me. I’m still very much looking forward to checking this one out, no doubt. But it’s not quite grabbing me like it should with this first tease. It’s not a bad trailer; it’s just a fairly unremarkable one. Hopefully, then, the actual film itself will be better. It definitely has the fire power to become something special. Here’s hoping it fires on all cylinders on January 20, 2017, a release date that’s also not very encouraging.

Here’s the trailer:

Three Comic Book Stories Perfect For ‘Arrow’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Will Arrow adapt more material from the comic books?

green-arrow

Arrow fans will agree season four is probably the weakest in the CW show’s history. However, the fifth season could be a return to form. Here are three comic book stories that would make great adaptations on the show.

The Longbow Hunters is first and foremost an Oliver Queen storyline
“The Longbow Hunters” is first and foremost an Oliver Queen storyline

The Longbow Hunters

Mike Grell’s 1987 miniseries is dark and gritty. Launched in the Post-Crisis universe, the Green Arrow is struggling with his mortality as he turns 43. As Oliver Queen, he heads to Seattle and investigates a drug smuggling ring. Further complicating things is an assassin named Shado who falls afoul of Green Arrow.

“The Longbow Hunters” could easily be adapted by the Arrow producers, because it works as an Oliver story at the core. Having him travel outside of Star City would be great, especially in making a change of pace. While Laurel Lance is dead, the show could easily use another character to take her role in the plot.

Oliver Queen losing his fortune and company would make for a great season arc

Oliver Loses Everything

Crooked financier John Deleon frames Oliver for misusing public funds. This leads to Oliver nearly losing both his money and Queen Industries while dealing with crime. While he tries to clear his name, Oliver has an identity crisis as his life falls apart.

An adaptation of this story arc would be a great plot for Arrow. Instead of focusing on Oliver’s love life, the show could zero in on how he must find a balance as a vigilante and CEO.

Snowbirds Don’t Fly

Perhaps the most famous Green Arrow story, this one focuses on Roy Harper’s drug addiction. After staking out a heroin ring, Oliver discovers that Roy Harper is himself an addict. He is further horrified to learn Roy stole his arrows because he needs drug money. Enraged, he lashes out at Roy and goes off to stop the drug ring. Meanwhile, Roy tries to quit heroin cold turkey.

Could the CW succeed in adapting a serious storyline from the comics?

“Snowbirds Don’t Fly” is perfect for Arrow, because Denny O’Neil and Neil Adams manage to make the story relevant and edgy. While it might be preachy, the comic arc succeeds at the human level. An adaptation of the arc would give a serious edge to the series. It would give actor Colton Haynes a chance to flex his acting range and show a troubled side of Roy’s character. However, given the story itself, the CW might be hesitant to depict drug abuse on the show.

Arrow‘s fifth season will premiere on October 5, 2016.

Marvel’s ‘X-Men: Death of X’ To Answer Lingering Questions

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Today, Marvel released a preview image and information for an upcoming mini-series. X-Men: Death of X takes place during the eight month interim after Secret Wars, and focuses on Cyclops and the lead up to hostile relation between many mutants and Inhumans.

Initial story arcs in several Marvel series reference this incident. Even the younger Scott Summers has been handling fallout of his older self. However, outside of a few snippets, little information is out there to tell us what occurred.

Jeff Lemire and Charles Soule are writing this miniseries. With their history of memorable story arcs, this makes the miniseries a little more intriguing. Many X-Men fans did not enjoy this jarring change in the status quo, particularly with the treatment of Cyclops.

Youtuber Comic Book Girl 19 states her own discontent to how the character’s arc under Brian Michael Bendis is undone entirely.

Whether or not this will absolve the earlier sin remains to be seen. But, at the very least, a few plot holes will receive some needed attention by Marvel. Some fans appear to be initial skeptical to the miniseries, particularly due to Marvel’s row with FOX Studios over film right on the mutants.

Though this does not mean the series will not find some success after its initial release.

U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself”?

Marvel to Start New ‘Champions’ Series

Monkeys Fighting Robots

And the honeymoon is officially over. Nova, Spider-Man (Miles Morales), and Ms. Marvel will leave the Avengers and form their own team, the Champions. The roster will include time displaced Cyclops, Hulk (Amadeus Cho), and Viv Vision.

The Champions series will be under the tenure of Mark Waid and Humberto Ramos.

No specific details are out regarding what will be the team’s first adventure. Though it appears to focus somewhat on the younger Cyclops wanting to join the team. But, as Mark Waid told Entertainment Weekly, the team will have an activist vibe.

One element Mark Waid points out in his interview is the introduction of many younger heroes into Marvel’s pantheon. With all this new blood, there is bound to be a change of how problems are handled.

Part of the buzz for the new series pertains to Marvel’s ability to use the title “Champions.” After a long standing battle with Heroic Publishing, Marvel could not use the title after the 1970’s. A recent settlement allows for the House of Ideas bring the team back into action.

The series appears to come directly from the aftermath of the ongoing Civil War II event. With Nova, Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel splitting away from the Avengers, it is obvious to see a profound split between the Old and New Guards.

It will be interesting to see how the team functions with the inclusion of Viv Vision and Amadeus Cho, especially since neither have experience in working in a team.

The series will come out in October, and will be available in print and online.

Director David Ayer also spoke with EW about the film, saying the following:

“Two years ago Suicide Squad was a tertiary [DC property]. No one knew anything about it. It was a cool little playground, and I was going to go make my movie. Now it’s like the hype bus. All of the attention has swung onto it, and it has to carry a lot more weight than it was ever intended to. I think it can sustain it. But it’s a lot of pressure. You definitely feel the pressure.”
