Review ‘Under The Dog’ 00 – Worth The Wait!

Monkeys Fighting Robots

After what seemed like forever I finally got a notification from Kickstarter that I could download the first episode of Under The Dog. If you don’t know what Under The Dog is or why it’s such an important piece of work for the anime industry as a whole then click here, and it should explain some things. As for the plot, well it seems like its going to be akin to something like Ghost in the Shell or Bubblegum Crisis. I’m just spitballing here, but this is my interpretation of things so far. In a near future humanity had placed all their hope in what they call the “light”. This seems to have unfortunately had the adverse effects of turning people into monsters known as “Pandora”. The US military, stationed in Japan of course, are out to find the people who are infected with the light and have potential of becoming Pandora’s. The reason is yet to be clear. However there is also another agency that commands the “Flowers”, young girl assassins who are in search for a human who has a white hue and can overcome turning into a Pandora. The Flowers seem to be imbued with something similar to what the Pandora have. Their goal is to destroy, what was humanity hope, in search of a new one.

So to start I’m going to spoil the shit out of this first episode so forewarning. There are some scenes near the end where the surprise is almost half the fun. Personally I am totally on board with what this show is laying down so far. It breathes life into its world almost immediately and lets a lot of the exposition be deposited by actual events. This made it way easier to explain and made the episode more engaging because I was learning about the world while seeing the plot unfold simultaneously. This took the stakes that I didn’t know existed and built them naturally and is what made the emotion given off at the end of the episode so much weight. Every event gives you more insight on what happened the scene before and ties it all together wonderfully. After almost 20 minutes I was sad when Anthea had to come in and kill Hana. Everything had built up her character so well and it felt like she was coming to some realization, but was cut short. This says a lot about the meaning in “light of humanity” and what kind of scenario our Flowers are hoping to break free from.

Honestly I would have preferred more Anthea, since she was on all the promotional material and took up most of the screen time in the PV, I expected it to start out with her. Never the less I like Hana’s tragic end lead into Anthea’s intro so much that I wouldn’t change it. Everything about Anthea is bad-ass, even the universe itself acknowledges her skill. However the scenario she’s thrust in still feels like a dangerous one. She gets caught by surprise more than once and still manages to struggle through. She draws a good parallel with the supposed theme of, what do you do when your hope has turned against you? Struggle to find a new hope. This reigns even more truth when she mercilessly kills Shunichi, the boy who Hana had previously declared their “savior” and had been trying to save for the whole first twenty minutes. When we think about how Shunichi and Hana both end up I thought “What was the point for Hana to die”? FO course it was to protect Shunichi but after she died her meaning for death became meaningless, she ended up dying for nothing in retrospect. Or die she? Maybe it wasn’t what she died for but her willingness to die. Anyway, the reason Anthea kills him is he shows signs of turning into a Pandora and she shoots him outright. We learn from the Flowers HQ that it was because of his hue changing to black. Which is sad and unfortunate if we consider how quickly things can change from hopeful to abysmal.

And that sort of sings through the whole episode. But I think the one “hope” if that’s not ironic enough is that Anthea does kill Shunichi right away. I know she was probably trained that way and all. But I think her willingness to put an end to what was a few seconds ago their “one chance” shows just how much she hasn’t given up and is willing to fight. Immediately after she quote’s someone we haven’t met yet and makes the “hope paradox” as if she is still struggling herself thought. Anthea herself may be bordering that line of hope and despair that this world is caught in. As for the other two Flowers they show, all I can say it that I hope we see more of the tan girl. I assume all of the girls have loved ones they are fighting for and while I didn’t really care that Hana’s parent died and her brother being left taken, I felt the harshness of the world they live in, which I assume was the goal. Hana’s mere inclusion in the story is rather tragic and sad, but I already talked about that enough.

Moving onto the animation, which I have already seen still’s and close-ups of people complaining. I personally thought it looked good. Not great in terms of art aspects, but amazing in terms of animation quality and shot composition. During action scenes there was a natural flow that made everything that happened that more impactful. The scene transitions also kept the heavy fast narrative much easier to get invested in and follow. Personally I liked all the character designs but can understand that some people prefer that “light novel” design better. But seeing those would be almost impossible to animate to the extent Under The Dog does, it’s a win. Something I also immediately noticed was that all the English-speaking people sounded very good. Some of their lines were a little silly. But their accents were clearly American and as an American who would notice something like that, makes me feel warm and fuzzy. Also all the military art, dialogue and actions felt very natural and realistic. I know it’s not something too noticeable but the attention to detail is what I’m getting at here. Under The Dog clearly had a lot of work put into it and care for what it’s trying to say and even the ephemeral things that don’t really matter. Because Under The Dog is all about pulling you into the world that these people live in and maybe slowly realizing that its only a few steps ahead of our world. Its trying to make this a personal story, and I like that.

I can only speculate on what Under The Dog ends up telling us about humanity, but right away I know its going to be about real feelings. Which is a good sign. Some sci-fi series get so caught up in their concepts that they forget to ground it into something that we can care about. As for my feelings on it, I left wanting more.

“Star Wars” Star Daisy Ridley Chased Off Social Media

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Daisy Ridley Force AwakensYesterday was a sad day for Star Wars fans, as actual human cinnamon roll Daisy Ridley deleted her instagram. Her actions followed harassment from “fans” and followers, which had been going on for some time. The final straw for both sides, however, was a post she made about the 2016 Teen Choice Awards.

When Hollywood Gets Political

The 2016 Teen Choice Awards chose to honor victims of gun violence by inviting their families to the stage. They created the hashtag “#stoptheviolence” to discuss the event. Many attendees of the awards show posted to their social media accounts about the hashtag. Some even took photos with the honored guests, giving them more visibility and including information about their victimized loved ones.

What Do Actors Owe Us?

Those following the page took Ridley’s (highly personal) post as a political stance. On facebook you can still see the arguments going on between “fans” urging her to back away from politics, even accusing her of being a hypocrite because of the weapons she uses on screen. Still other fans, upset by Ridley leaving instagram, have started posting on co-star John Boyega’s accounts asking him to tell her to return. Boyega, with all the protective instinct of an older brother, has respectfully declined.john boyega instagram

This news is particularly shameful knowing that Ridley has been very candid and loving with her fans. Several months ago she opened up about her struggles with endometriosis. Before that, she responded to criticism about her natural body shape unapologetically,  addressing the age-old adage that “real women have curves”.

This is not the first time a celebrity has left social media due to fan harassment or interaction. Most recently, of course, Leslie Jones left twitter following racist comments on her page. Patton Oswalt, Hayley Atwell, and Steven Moffat have all left twitter behind thanks to fan interaction. So when will we, the human race, learn our lesson? When will we learn to treat our celebrities with love and respect?

We’re still holding out hope.

Fans Demand Knighthood For The Fourth Doctor

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Doctor Who? That’s Sir Doctor to you. Or at least, some fans think it ought to be.

A new Change.org petition is demanding that the British government award Tom Baker a “long overdue” knighthood. Baker played the fourth incarnation of the Doctor on the British sci-fi classic Doctor Who.

The 12 Doctors

So far, 12 actors have portrayed the Doctor — 13 if you count John Hurt’s one-shot “War Doctor”.

The Doctor is a “Time Lord” — a nigh-immortal alien who can travel through time and space. When his body is damaged beyond repair, the Doctor can “regenerate” into a new one. The process changes his physical appearance and personality. It’s also allowed the show to continue for more than 50 years, with new actors stepping into the iconic role as needed.

The role was originated by William Hartnell in 1963. In 1966, Hartnell’s failing health led to his replacement by Patrick Troughton. Since then, a host of actors have played the role. Scottish actor Peter Capaldi is the 12th and current Doctor. He took the reins from Matt Smith in 2013.

The definitive Doctor Who

But Baker, who played the role between 1974 and 1981, is considered by many to be the definitive Doctor.

The petition calls it a “travesty” that Baker has not been recognized by the British government. It cites his “lifetime in entertainment and tireless charity work.” The petition will be delivered to the U.K. Cabinet Office Honours and Appointments Secretariat.

Review: ‘Strawberry Shortcake’ #4: Deals With Criticism

Monkeys Fighting Robots

There’s a new foodie blogger in Berry Bitty City–And her name is Raisin Cane! Berrykin Bloom was planning to book Strawberry Shortcake to cater his event but Raisin convinces him to hold a competitive tasting with “Pie Man’s on Porcupine Peak.” Can Strawberry and her friends overcome the power of online persuasion? The voters will decide!

Writing

One of the brightest problems this book had in the beginning was the awkward introduction of modern technology to the classic franchise. Now, writer Georgia Ball has found a way to showcase the importance of this addition by conveying great lessons about proper use of social media, and how a person needs to handle unwanted and negative attention from it.

After getting a few bad reviews, Strawberry realizes she needs to confront her rival Purple Pieman about it, because she believes the one giving the bad reviews is working with him. The fact she is willing to confront the person she believes is the cause of the harassment is already a good lesson about how to deal with online bullying in real life. The issue only gets better from there, and is full of perfect moments about what to do when someone is being negative to you online.

The back up story about confronting your friends is interesting but may have worked better in a full issue. Writer Kristen Gudsnuk tries to pack in a very heavy message in only four pages. It works, but probably could have done better as an issue’s main story.

Strawberry Shortcake

Artwork

The art of Amy Mebberson continues to retain the same level of quality it did in previous issues. It works to offer the perfect level of serious and comedic moments which appear in the issue. The art of the backup story by Nicoletta Baldari is charming as well, but offers a much softer art style than the more expressive one in the main story. Still, neither styles seems out of place and both meld great together.

Conclusion

Though some may brush off the title as being too childish, it is still very important to look at how appropriate and valuable series is to younger readers. This book continues to be a great starter series for people hoping to get children into comic books.

Top 5 Moments From ‘Harley Quinn’ #1

Monkeys Fighting Robots

SPOILER ALERT FOR HARLEY QUINN #1

Everyone’s favorite lady with a mallet is back to make the world a little more cheerful. (WARNING: Cheerfulness may come with many unwanted side effects, such as zombie attacks, sharp objects, and catapults). So far, it looks like her life will be far from normal (as usual), and now it’s time to look at the top five moments from the first issue of her new series and see which were the best.

0012

5. From Alien to Hot Dog

What happens when an alien named Vertigax crash lands on Earth? He tries to hide himself as a cow but ends up getting sent to the slaughterhouse and turned into hot dogs. The insane escalation of events from his arrival, to becoming hot dogs, and being the cause of humans turning into zombies is so entertaining that it easily made the list.

0005

4. A One Woman Show

While standing on stage with a microphone, Harley takes the time to update everyone on who she is. A quick review of her origin and an introduction of her buddies helps to let the reader know what has been happening in her life before now. Given how many titles she has been in, this little segment was a very amusing way to catch everyone up.

0002

3. Ivy And Harley at the spa

Sometimes it’s the more personal moments which really help to make an issue memorable. This issue began with Ivy and Harley sharing an afternoon together at a spa to take the time to catch up with each other. Spending time with your bestie is always fun, and seeing two of the best friends in comics just enjoy themselves was a very welcomed sight.

0020

2. The Scatapult

Why does Harley has a catapult on the roof of her building? Why not? Realizing she needs to get an injured friend to the hospital as soon as possible she puts him and fires him in the direction of the establishment. The use of such a device on anyone is entertaining enough, but using it as a means to get someone to a hospital as soon as possible is dementedly brilliant.

0017

1. I’ll save you!

What do you do when someone’s been bitten by a zombie? Harley knows and quickly jumps into action. After her ally/stalker/number one fan Red Tool gets bitten by a zombie, her first reaction is to make sure he doesn’t turn into a zombie. Unfortunately, it doesn’t exactly work out the best for him. Still, the crazy act is incredibly amusing and easily earns the top stop on this list.

What were your favorite moments from Harley Quinn #1? Leave a comment below and let us know.

If You Signed The Petition To Get Rotten Tomatoes Shut Down, Listen Up

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Update: The petition has been been withdrawn.

If you haven’t been following the most recent case of DC Fanboys having a problem with critics, let me fill you in. The embargo for Suicide Squad reviews ended on Tuesday, August 2, at 9am PST. The reviews then proceeded to be published minute by minute, and within the hour, the Rotten Tomatoes score for the film was under 20%. That’s a really, really bad score. From then on, the percentage started to go up, and as of this writing is sitting at a measly 35%. It’s an improvement from 20%, but nowhere near the score hoped for by Warner Bros. or fans. After the movie had gotten the negative reviews, anger from DC fans was everywhere online; reddit, Facebook, Twitter, you name it. Following the general hatred of these “bias, Marvel loving critics”, an actual petition was created in attempt to get Rotten Tomatoes off the internet. Yeah, that happened.

Alright, now with that out of the way, let’s get to the purpose of this article; DC die-hards, listen up.

Don’t attack Rotten Tomatoes.

The site doesn’t review movies, they simply compile hundreds of reviews from certified critics all around the web in attempt to give the most accurate consensus on the quality of each and every movie released. Now of course I’m not talking about all DC fans. In fact, I’m solely going after the people that signed this petition to get Rotten Tomatoes taken off the internet, because that’s just ridiculous.

Like I said before, it’s understood that you want DC films to be good, as do I and every rational film fan on this earth. With this is mind, however, the signing of this petition gives no logical reasons as to why they should actually be shut down. You don’t really think people should be laid off because reviewers around the web “always give The DC Extended Universe movies unjust Bad Reviews”, do you? And what’s to say the review is “unjust”? Considering that the film’s first official screenings begin Thursday, August 4, and that 99.9% of the moviegoing population doesn’t have access to press screenings, it appears as though these petition signers are angry at bad reviews for a movie they haven’t seen yet which, quite frankly, is just ignorant.

Nobody wants DC movies to be bad. And if you find a case of someone wanting a certain film to be bad, DC or not, they’re an outlier. Believe me when I say that we cinephiles and comic book fans want these films to be amazing, but sometimes they don’t end up hitting the quality level we’d hoped.

Bottom line: it’s okay to not listen to critics. What isn’t acceptable, however, is the attempt at censoring people that disagree with you.

There is no reason to attack Rotten Tomatoes for the Suicide Squad score. There is also no reason to be discouraged by bad reviews. Go see Suicide Squad with an open mind and hope it’s good; and on the same note, don’t attack film critics for doing their job.

Review: ‘Steven Universe’: Crack the Whip: Hi-Yo Lion!

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Amethyst takes charge of Steven and Connie.

SPOILER ALERT

Looks like we didn’t have to wait long for Jasper to make her movie. It’s definitely a welcomed change to see the more intense action has come to stay and it’s literally at front door insisting the heroes come out to play. From here on it looks like things are going to be very intense and full of intrigue. It was a long wait but it was worth it.

Amethyst doesn’t exactly shine in this episode. Between acting as immature as possible, getting beaten by Jasper, and having to get saved by Steven and Connie, this is probably the lowest moment she’s ever experienced. It’s going to be a while before she’s able to hold her head up high after this one.

The show stealing moment this episode is the battle between Jasper and Stevonnie. Fans have been waiting for this for a long time. Previous times Steven and Connie have fused it has been on accident or in much more lighthearted incidents. Here, they fused specifically for the purpose of being able to stand face to face with Jasper to save Amethyst. Also, the addition of riding Lion into battle while in this form was the cherry on top of it all. This moment can easily fit on a top ten list of some of the best battles to ever come out of this series (if you would like a list containing the best battles in Steven Universe, leave comments below).

This episode gave fans so much of what they have always wanted. The season could just end here and many would still be giddy with joy for weeks to come. The combat was good and elements which had been building before are now finally coming together. Now all they have to do is worry about Amethyst ruined pride.

Disgruntled DC Fans Call For Rotten Tomatoes Shutdown

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The embargo for DC’s newest movie Suicide Squad came down today and thus far the reviews have not been entirely positive. At the time of writing, the website Rotten Tomatoes has calculated a score of just 38% based on 61 reviews. That is not the best score, but it seems that some DC fans have decided to take it personally. One fan has started a petition to shut down Rotten Tomatoes for what they perceive to be a very good reason.

We need this site to be shut down because It’s Critics always give The DC Extended Universe movies unjust Bad Reviews, Like
1- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 2016
2- Suicide Squad 2016
and that Affects people’s opinion even if it’s a really great movies

There is a conspiracy on the internet that critics are being paid by Disney/Marvel to write bad reviews for DC films. This is ridiculous, of course, but it appears that a lot of people believe it to be true judging from the near 3,000 signatures and comments on the petition.

Like this one

Because I love both Man of Steel and the Ultimate Cut of Batman v Superman and I’m really bummed out by the reviews for Suicide Squad. I don’t want DC Films to be in the same vein of the Transformers movies, and I think it’s pathetic that people want the universe to fail.

This one

Unfair reviews.
Why is this important? Well, because in this day and age of social media, news articles and reviews of all things get spread very fast, and are often taken very seriously. Unfair reviews can end up ruining people’s expectations to the point where they choose not to watch the movie at all (look what happened to bvs. I still find people who haven’t watched the movie, even though they happen to be avid watchers of other superhero movies). And that’s wrong on a multitude of levels. Movies get panned, lose potential watchers and even fans, and no studio deserves that. This will eventually lead to an imbalance in the industry. And that’s a terrible thing to happen.

And this one

I supported this because, like many of you, I am a butthurt DC fanboy who hates Mawble and is intolerant of other people’s opinions. Seriously, the critics give kiddie Mawble great reviews, and deep mythological DC gets poor ones. It is about time those Disney paid critics got what’s coming to them.

There seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding about Rotten Tomatoes and what it is. Rotten Tomatoes is a website where they compile a bunch of reviews and break them down to meaningless numbers. These numbers are based on the reviews that are allowed to be posted to the site. To get your review on a website you need to be a member of an Official Association (for example I am a member of the Utah Film Critics Association and qualifies me to be a member of Rotten Tomatoes if I apply to it, and they approve me). These memberships require voting from previous members, an outlet that is recognized as official, and a minimum of either time spent writing or works per year. You cannot just email Rotten Tomatoes and ask them to put your reviews on their website, and they do it.

There is also the misconception that Rotten Tomatoes gives you a good idea of what the general community thinks, but that is not true. There is a huge disparity with sex, age, and race.

The reality of the situation is unless you have some sort of financial stake in a movie, television show, comic, or game, then the reviews do not matter. A critic is here to give their opinion based on the film they saw and nothing more. Are there critics with bias? Of course, but no one can be truly objective. To lash out at critics for disliking a movie that you have likely not seen yet is pointless.

Is Rotten Tomatoes a good resource? Not really; you should find a critic you normally agree with and follow their work. Is there some sort of conspiracy against DC movies? No, and to think so is to ignore the easiest explanation: sometimes critics don’t like movies you like.

‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Season 4 Synopsis Released

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has receieved a brand new, in depth synopsis for season 4; it includes the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War, mentions Ghost Rider, and overall gives us an idea as to what season 4’s arc might look like.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” returns with a vengeance for the fourth exciting season in an all new time period, Tuesday at 10:00 p.m. ET. In the aftermath of their journey to another planet, Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and the rest of the team were driven more than ever to put an end to the Hydra organization. Little did they know that they were up against the deadliest threat they’ve ever faced – an extremely powerful Inhuman, Hive, who was transported back from Maveth in the body of their worst enemy, Grant Ward.  The team was able to thwart and kill Hive and take down Hydra, but they are all still mourning the death of fellow agent and Inhuman, Lincoln Campbell.

In light of the Sokovia Accords, and with Hydra obliterated, S.H.I.E.L.D. has been legitimatized again and no longer needs to operate in the shadows. Since the world presumes that Coulson is dead, the organization needed a new Director (Jason O’Mara) to be the face of the organization. Coulson finds himself back in the role as an agent and teamed with Mack (Henry Simmons), and together they are tasked with tracking down and confirming the presence of Enhanced people, aka Inhumans. They have been trying to track down and capture Daisy (Chloe Bennet), aka Quake, who has gone rogue in an attempt to atone for sins from the past. But with the world believing that Daisy is a dangerous outlaw who has taken down banks and bridges, the new Director has no qualms about taking her down for good. Agent May (Ming-Na Wen) is tasked with training specialist strike teams, and Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) have taken a big step forward in their relationship. But with Simmons’ new promotion as Special Advisor to the Director in Science and Technology, Fitz, as well as her former team members, finds it hard to confide in or trust her since she’s now the Director’s confidant.

Robbie Reyes (Gabriel Luna) will roar into the lives of Agent Coulson and the team as a junkyard mechanic who can turn on a dime into the terrifying Ghost Rider. Will Robbie be a friend or foe to S.H.I.E.L.D. – as well as the world, itself? Meanwhile, Fitz discovers that socially awkward genius and friend Dr. Radcliffe (John Hannah) has started putting the finishing touches on a new, secret invention.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Chloe Bennet as Daisy Johnson, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons and Henry Simmons as Agent Alphonso “Mack” MacKenzie.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 starts on Tuesday, September 20.

Ranking The Five Best Characters In ‘Suicide Squad’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

With A Jam-Packed Cast, Which Member Of The Suicide Squad Stood Out?

It’s a hard task to juggle so many bold characters. David Ayer’s Suicide Squad‘ is the film adaption of the ragtag team of villains thrown together to become Task Force X. These criminals all have very distinct personalities that allow them to shine.

But who shined the brightest?

Below I’ll rank the best characters from the latest movie in the DC Extended Universe.

  1. Deadshot (Will Smith)
    Suicide Squad
-Deadshot honestly lands in the top spot because the movie really did force him to be the lead. While I think the film could have been a serviceable ensemble piece, you couldn’t escape Will Smith in ‘Suicide Squad‘. That being said, his performance is quite great. Smith’s take on the hitman Floyd Lawton added some serious heart to the movie and gave some of the best action scenes.
  2. Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie)
    Suicide Squad

-You knew from the moment Harley was announced that she was gonna steal the show. Margot Robbie is a rising star in Hollywood with great on-screen presence. She uses that fully to her advantage when she takes on the killer clown named Harley Quinn. At times, she got a little too cartoony and lost the grounded take on the character but it was all in good fun.
  3. Amanda Waller (Viola Davis)
    Suicide Squad
-You can’t have Viola Davis in a film and not expect to see her eat up all the screen-time she was given. What she brought to Amanda Waller is that cold and cruel nature we know. But my favorite thing she added to Waller was the believability. Instead of becoming a government parody, she seemed like a true villain. I can’t wait to see how her character grows in later films.
  4. El Diabo (Jay Hernandez)
    Suicide Squad

-One of the biggest surprises in ‘Suicide Squad’ is how fleshed out and important Diablo becomes. From his brutal backstory to his epic demonic transformation, Jay Hernandez lit it up. Starting the film not really wanting to lose control with his powers, he remains in the background. That’s until he is finally thrusted front and center; given some great moments and one of the best fights of the film.
  5. The Joker (Jared Leto)
    Suicide Squad

-To say that Leto’s take on Joker was polarizing is being a bit too nice. People downright hated it. From the grill to the tattoos, it didn’t feel like their Joker. What David Ayer and Jared Leto was turn The Joker into this street thug with the same sick intentions. The change is drastic but you can still feel that clown prince of crime we’ve known to love. Also, I just adore the sick laugh Leto used in the film.

Who’s your favorite in ‘Suicide Squad‘?

Did Deadshot steal the show for you or was their another character you loved not on this list? Let me know in the comments below!
