Ewan McGregor Nearly Turned Down ‘Star Wars’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Believe it or not, Ewan McGregor almost turned down the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Why?

He thought the Star Wars prequels were too mainstream for him, McGregor revealed during an interview with The Telegraph.

Star Wars is Star Wars, it’s something I grew up with as a kid,” said McGregor.

“At first, I was very reluctant to do it, because I saw myself as this urban, grungy actor doing films about heroin and stuff, and that’s who I felt like I really was. But the nearer I got to it, the more I wanted to do it: and it wasn’t for money reasons, because it was back in the day I got paid nicely for it,  but it wasn’t ridiculous by any means. It was to do with being in it and it didn’t feel like Hollywood. George Lucas hated Hollywood he was in San Francisco following the beat of his own drum.”

Early in his career, the Scottish actor starred in films like Shallow Grave, Trainspotting and Velvet Goldmine.

Thankfully, McGregor decided to take the role of the iconic character. He has recently expressed interest in returning to a galaxy far, far away.

An Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off, anyone?

In the meantime, Star Wars fans don’t have too much longer for the next movie.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the first standalone movie in Star Wars universe, hits the big screen December 16.

Hayao Miyazaki Ends Retirement To Direct Final Film

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Hayao Miayazaki is stepping out of retirement…again.

The legendary Studio Ghibli director is planning to make a feature length film out of a story he’s been working on for nearly two decades called Kemushi no Boro (Boro the Caterpillar). The plot is said to revolve around a caterpillar so small “it may be easily squished between your fingers.”

Miyazaki was originally planning to create the story as a short for the Ghlibli museum, but was reportedly unhappy with how it turned out. He claims the project could take 5 years to make, which would make him 80 years old at its time of release.

This isn’t the first time Miyazaki has disrupted his retirement to make a film, but is anyone really complaining? Studio Ghibli has not confirmed if they are greenlighting Kemushi no Boro, but I doubt they would deny Miyazaki the chance to make one more movie.

Are you looking forward to Miyazaki’s next, and likely final, product? Comment down below and let us know.

‘Doctor Strange’: How The VFX For Dormammu Were Created

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Doctor Strange had unique visuals, and a big part of it was because of Dormammu’s dark dimension. In a recent chat with IGN, VFX supervisor Stephane Ceretti laid out how they created the design on-screen.

“We didn’t want to do that because it had been done before,” Ceretti said of the fiery head trope. “The whole idea is he’s a character that lives in-between dimensions. He can also take whatever shapes he wants to take. But in order to talk to Strange at the end of the film, he’s taking that shape [and] you can feel all these ripples in his face and all that stuff… these kind of opening windows to other dimensions, and all the reflective qualities of it. We really wanted to add the evocation of that fire, but we didn’t want to do fire so we went for [a] multicolored approach to try and keep the psychedelic [look] of the entire space. [That] was pretty difficult because when you start putting too many colors together it becomes very, very muddy and kind of painterly very fast. We had to find the right balance of colors within the lighting of Benedict when he was on our stage and trying to find the best way to kind of make it all work together, which is actually not very easy.”

Personally, I wasn’t a fan of the look. It just felt like another large cloud similar to that of Galactus in Fantastic Four.

Avengers #1.1: The Untold Story of Captain America’s Kooky Quartet

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Avengers #1.1 marks a tale like no other, the untold story of Captain America’s Kooky Quartet. Now a few of you out there may wonder what I mean, so let me explain. The Kooky Quartet marks the period starting with Avengers #16 vol. 1 in 1965. This period is when Iron Man, Thor, The Wasp, and Giant-Man all left the team, with Captain America being the only one left. After the team leaves, they are promptly replaced by Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, and Hawkeye. Mark Waid and Barry Kitson are now going to tell the tale of Captain America and his time leading the Kooky Quartet. Let’s see if this tale is as Silver as the Age or is it a Modern Age mess? Onwards as we dive into this review of Avengers #1.1!

Let us go forth into Avengers #1.1 and see the beginnings of the Kooky Quartet in a new light.

Avengers #1.1 Cover

Tweaking with the format here, I adore the introduction to this story. If anything is truly successful in this book is the intro. The Wasp makes for a great way to introduce this period of the team for you. It’s Silver Age bombastic energy at its finest. Barry Kitson and Mark Farmer capture the perfect vibe with Kitson’s clean art and Farmer’s smooth inks. Jordan Boyd’s colors on this intro are also as bright as the time period they’re channeling. The colors sparkle, shine, and pop off the page. Even Ferran Delgado’s letters capture the time period perfectly, bold and powerful poppy fonts, it’s wonderful. Then Waid’s writing of The Wasp fits the period and captures the optimism of the team, until the last bit when she says the team is tired. Waid and his team work well together in giving this a great beginning for certain.

It is interesting that after the intro and Captain America gets an introduction to his new team, this is when things get uneven. Cap’s reaction to Quicksilver, Hawkeye, and Scarlet Witch is funny, I have to admit. Captain America worked for the most part here, Waid has a great handle on him from his long tenure of writing Cap’s series. After this, the issue gets weird when they introduce the antagonists. The issue might have worked better without the ending supervillain fight with the Frightful Four. This sounds odd to say considering I enjoyed the chat about how this is their time, but they didn’t entirely work here in execution. The ending to this had some of the weakest art of the issue too, it didn’t look as strong as the beginning and into the middle of the story.

When the art goes in a rough direction, believe me, it gets rough.

The interactions with the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were okay, but again they didn’t gel here. Waid had an uneven tone with them for the most part for me anyway. Hawkeye was the one that worked the best the entire way through the issue, Clint Barton was spot on and a joy to read.  This is why Avengers #1.1 is so uneven. For every one aspect that works, there’s another that doesn’t quite come together.

This is the best way to describe Avengers #1.1, solid enough of an idea but the execution is messy. It’s got a good hook to get you invested at the start and by the ending, it doesn’t land as well as it should. Which is a shame as I like the idea behind this. It’s not a terrible story but I wish it worked better.

This is one of those series that if you’re curious about the Kooky Quartet, give it a try. Yet if you’re not entirely wanting more Avengers in your world, this is skippable. Despite mostly solid art and some fun moments, this may work better as a trade but as a single, it doesn’t come together well, at all.

Thought Blast: Processing The ‘Ghost in The Shell’ Trailer

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The ‘Ghost in the Shell’ trailer is here, it’s out there and it is for everyone to see. After reading Manny’s piece on it and seeing the trailer for myself, now I have some thoughts. Anime and Live Action have had a mixed history in media, this was going to be polarizing on many levels. It’s nice that now we can all see the trailer and figure out the good and bad of the whole thing. Now if you’ve not seen the trailer yet, I will link it below so you can see. Then stay around, I’ll share my thoughts, you can share yours and we’ll have a chat about it.

Still here? Cool. Time to chat about the ‘Ghost in The Shell’ Trailer!

As you watch the trailer realize one thing, this trailer had to accomplish a lot in a couple minutes. For the fans, it had to establish that this movie was going to be faithful to the anime and the world it established. On another hand entirely, it had to introduce an audience to ‘Ghost in The Shell.’ As many fans that see this, there’s another crowd that only knows Scarlett Johannson and curious about what she’s up to. This is a lot for any trailer to do, it ultimately succeeds on both levels. If you’re a fan, now you know what the world looks like in a live action format, love or hate it, now you know. For the new fan, this works to hit the beats and get them invested in the concept.

If the content lives up to the visuals, we should be in good shape.

For me personally, I did like the trailer and I’m willing to give the movie a chance. The aesthetic of ‘Ghost in The Shell’ is there, there is care put into this film. This movie looks like live action anime and is gorgeous to look at. I remember watching the anime back in the day and this gives me the same vibe the anime did. Unless this trailer and the trailers to come are covering a dumpster fire within, this should work. For the people not as much watching for aesthetic and more knowing what the heck is this about, I’m impressed by how the trailer explains it. Even if people are unsure, there’s a lot of great effects and action to keep people excited as well.

I get the feeling the only thing most people will agree on is the movie looks beautiful, aesthetically speaking.

It looks good so far from at least the surface level. It’s done well at introducing people to the story, so we’re on the right track. This is totally my opinion here, this is just me blasting out thoughts into the universe. I want to know what you all think out there in Internet land. Feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think.

Ezra Miller Comments On Rick Famuyiwa’s ‘Flash’ Departure

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The Flash film starring Ezra Miller recently lost its director, Rick Famuyiwa, over creative differences. The actor recently caught up with Nerdist and gave his thoughts on the situation.

“[I feel] sad, a little sad. Love Rick, but super grateful for all the work he has done. And trust the process, you know what I mean? I trust these processes. I think from a distance, observing the processes of a production of the film can seem–I dunno–interpersonal, or dramatic. But it’s actually just these are groups of people working to make a piece of art together. And you know, things work out. Things don’t work out. I definitely feel like ultimately things will work out. I’m extremely excited about The Flash. It’s funny. We’ve had sort of this tragic relay race of the passing of the baton of this project. But it feels like each person who has won the race has brought something really special to it, which I think will ultimately be in the work we create.”

The film has lost two directors so far: first Seth Grahame-Smith, and most recently Famuyiwa. Considering that both of the departures were reportedly due to ‘creative differences’, does this mean Warner Bros. is being too controlling of the property?

Who do you want to see direct this movie? Let us know in the comments section.

The untitled Flash film is slated to hit theaters on March 16, 2018.
