‘Batwoman Rebirth’ #1: What to Expect

Monkeys Fighting Robots

With February rolling swiftly towards us, DC comics fans await Batwoman Rebirth #1. OK, maybe not all fans, but at least this fan. Marguerite Bennett, one of my personal favorite comics authors, will be penning the story. This means that I am already biased towards it. If Ms. Bennett’s approach to Kane in Batwoman Rebirth will be anything like what she’s done in DC Bombshells, then readers will be in for a treat.

Back in 2013, the Batwoman team quit the series after DC refused to let Kane get married to her same-sex partner, Maggie, on panel. Despite having allowed her to propose in the book not once but twice, the DC would not allow the two women to marry. Following the walk out, the story flailed and the book ended. Ms. Bennett has said in interviews that Kane’s queerness inspired the author to break into the comics industry.

During NYCC, I had the opportunity to sit down with Ms. Bennett and interview her. The series had been announced only minutes before my arrival at the Javits Center. When asked what twists she planned to bring to make the character hers, Bennett responded, ““we’re really going to be delving into places we’ve never really seen Batwoman going. We’re exploding out of Gotham city, and sending her on globetrotting mission.” She continued to tell me that Batwoman will be using her military training to seek out individuals who have fled Gotham and the US. Continuing on, she noted, “part of that is that we’ve got these lost years. After she left the military and of course became Batwoman, but there are years where we don’t know what she was up to. We know they were very damaging. Those years start trickling back into her life.” This means that all the international elements of the DC Bombshells writing Bennett has done and those intellectual elements will be part of the story.

Batwoman Rebirth #1 will be released February 15, 2017. Comixology and Kindle copies can be  pre-ordered here.

‘John Wick: Chapter 2’ Has A New Dog And New Tricks

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Just when he thought he was out, they pulled him back in…again. John Wick, one of the world’s deadliest assassins, is once again drawn out of retirement in John Wick: Chapter 2.

Most big action movies, much like horror movies, are intrinsically comedic. They’re not about jokes, but the situations themselves can be so over-the-top ridiculous, that they’re almost laughable. But that’s not always a bad thing. If treated properly, it can actually be what makes an action movie great (like in the Fast and Furious flicks). It’s a fine line to walk, and most movies fail to walk it gracefully, but the John Wick franchise is proving itself to be a fine tightrope artist.

John Wick: Chapter 2 succeeds in the same way its predecessor did: it doesn’t take itself too seriously. It knows that the things John Wick can do are absurd, like shoot with perfect accuracy every time, and it embraces that. It even sometimes feels like there are certain beats built in for the audience to chuckle in disbelief. But, while it has fun, it never feels outright cheesy or dumb.

John Wick Chapter 2

The action sequences in this film are excellent, and are hands down the reason to take the trip to the theater. The filmmakers don’t rely on shaky cam or quick cuts to cop out and disorient the audience. They trust in their stunt work, and in their actors. It feels pure and authentic, and it pays off big time.

There is some time in the middle of the story where things seem to drag on, but that’s only because the action stops to propel the narrative. In a movie like John Wick, you’re in it for the action, so it’s easy to get a little bored when that element takes a back seat. But no worries – it comes back with gusto.

Finally, while the action is the main reason to see John Wick: Chapter 2, there is one notable performance that bears mentioning. Keanu Reeves is solid as the titular character, sure, but the real standout is Ian McShane as Winston. McShane plays his role with such gravitas that you almost forget you’re watching brain candy. He’s the kind of character that you’ll long to see more of, but hopefully never do. His allure is in the mystery.

The Bottom Line

This movie isn’t high art, but it’s a fun ride, and a good chance to turn your brain off and enjoy yourself. Isn’t that what an action movie is supposed to be?

Benedict Wong Compares Kevin Feige To Stan Lee

Monkeys Fighting Robots

One of the bigger fan highlights coming out of Doctor Strange was Benedict Wong’s portrayal as Wong. Although he didn’t have a huge amount of screen time, the actor made use of limited presence and gave fans a memorable performance.

Speaking with Comicbook.com, Wong made some pretty heavy remarks about Stan Lee and Kevin Feige.

“It’s amazing. Kevin Feige’s just a continuation of Stan Lee. As much as Stan created all these characters within the comics with Kirby and with Steve Ditko, and it’s just fantastic. I just think it’s real credit to Kevin as the baton’s been passed on. He is truly realizing and lifting you from the comic book. Lifting it from the scripts, and really garnering all these, in my book, incredible actors.”

If you enjoy the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you probably have Feige to thank. He’s the one leading the show in a remarkable way.

Wong is confirmed to make an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War, which will likely be his next time on screen in a Marel film.

Doctor Strange hits digital download on February 14 and Blu-Ray/DVD on February 28.

Young Han Solo Movie Grabs ‘Fleabag’ Starlet Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Monkeys Fighting Robots

You should watch Fleabag. If you watched it already, perhaps consider watching it again. Above all else, the Amazon/BBC Three dark dramedy gives show creator/lead actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge a tremendous calling card, which she’s already ready to cash. The British actress/writer joins Phil Lord & Chris Miller’s currently-filming, still-untitled young Han Solo movie. She’s set to play a key, undisclosed performance-capture character.

Variety (via EW) broke the casting news. It’s unclear how exactly she’ll factor inside the film, but comparisons towards Maz Kanata, Chewbacca, C-3PO and, most recently, Rogue One‘s K-2SO were made regarding the mysterious new character. Waller-Bridge joins fellow cast members Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Emilia Clarke and Woody Harrelson.

Waller-Bridge is also known for Broadchurch, Drifters and Crashing, in addition to Fleabag. The latter show, however, is how she’s known best in the United States and abroad. She’s an excellent screen presence with a dynamic range and a variety of facial expressions. It’s exciting to see her play such a prominent role in this much-anticipated prequel. Here’s hoping it’s just one of many that’ll soon come her way as she climbs up that mountain.

We’ll have to wait to see how sparkling red lipstick enters into a galaxy far, far away. For now, however, catch up on Fleabag before this new Han Solo movie comes out next year.

Monkeys Fighting Robots

IGN caught up with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn, where he commented on Baby Groot’s role in the film.

First, Gunn talked about the character’s difference from the original Guardians of the Galaxy.

“I think he’s a better written character then the first Groot in some ways,” Gunn said. “He’s just more complete character.”

Then, he briefly discussed how “stupid” Baby Groot is.

“He’s a little jerk. He can kick some a–. He’s also an idiot. He’s a baby. He’s not very smart. So, he’s stupid.”

Now, lastly, Gunn elaborated on why he made the choice to keep Groot a baby.

“When I first started thinking about it, when I was jotting down ideas, I thought Groot was maybe going to be an adult,” said Gunn. “And I thought ‘God, what if I just make Groot a baby for the whole movie. Like he’s a baby.’ And I think that just felt right.”

It Looks Like Wilson Fisk Won’t Be In ‘The Punisher’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Unfortunately, it looks like Vincent D’Onofrio won’t appear in this year’s Punisher Netflix series.

A Twitter user by the name of Sal Marra asked about the character appearing in the show, and here was D’Onofrio’s response.

“Nope not a chance. No plans. Zero”

The Punisher is set to hit Netflix at some point in the year. Iron Fist launches in March and The Defenders debut on the streaming service in summer, so following Marvel’s track record, The Punisher will likely be released in the Fall.

‘Netflix’ Invites You To ‘Castlevania’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Netflix has truly been friendly to the geek community. On top of the plethora of Marvel Cinematic TV Series they have produced, the company also launched original animated features such as Voltron: Legendary Defender which easily found an audience. Now, they has a new idea in mind. They will soon release an original animated series based on the video game franchise Castlevania.

The Castlevania series revolves around the the story of Dracula and his generation long fight against the vampire hunting family known as the Belmonts. This will not be the first time the series has been animated. The titular character Simon Belmont was featured prominently in the late 80s cartoon, Captain N: The Game Master. Unfortunately, a lot of fans would prefer to forget this incarnation of the character, even more than they would the less impressive installments of the franchise.

Previously, rumors circulated Netflix had been in talks to create a live action series based on the Legend of Zelda franchise but sadly these speculations turns out to be dismissed. Hopefully, this series will be met with some amount of praise as Nintendo could stand to have more of its properties be turned into movies or TV series. The company just seems to not be able to let go of a certain film from the 90s. You know, the one which had two guys from Brooklyn trying to save a princess. Yes, its The Super Mario Bros. movie. A film which still garnishes a 15% on Rottentomatoes.com and has been a haunting memory every time Nintendo even tries to think about making another live action version of any of their products. Come on Nintendo, its not like video game movie adaptations have been mostly bad or anything. What’s there to be afraid of?
