Awards season is about to start its big push. We still have Steven Spielberg’s historical drama, The Post, and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread – which just so happens to be Daniel Day-Lewis’s last movie as well – on the horizon. But there’s been plenty to enjoy so far in 2017, a year of big movies and small movies and some tremendous movie moments in both. You may have forgotten about some of these – stuff moves pretty fast these days – so this Turkey Day, here’s 12 movie moments to be thankful for in 2017…

2The Arrival of MUDBOUND Director Dee Rees

Mudbound is one of the very best films of the year, and should be in consideration for a handful of Oscars when the time comes. It is a gorgeous, harrowing tale of two families – one black, one white – navigating the Jim Crow South with different results. But within those differences, WWII Veterans from both sides find common ground, and the story ends on a bittersweet scene of hope.

And it is directed by relative unknown Dee Rees, and African American woman in a world that is sorely lacking her voice. It’s her breakout. The power of Mudbound should allow Rees to join Ava DuVernay as one of the rare black female filmmakers in the industry who can fight to get her vision on screen. She is important and she is clearly a tremendous talent.
