Hey Asshole, Please Stop Buying Comics! Also, No Fucking MilkShakes For You

Marvel Comics Editor Heather Antos grabbed a milkshake with coworkers this past Friday, and posted a selfie of the group on Twitter. The innocent photo managed to become a beacon for worthless internet trolls.

Here are some of the remarks:

No wonder Marvel Comics sales have nose-dived. Everyone has moved to DC where there is no SJW crap. – @SatansRobots

Can we just get off of feminism and social justice and actually print stories. God DC looks better and better – @Iwishiwashim12

Looks like a bunch of SWJ’s to me – @OutlawForHire

Antos received more negative comments over next 12 hours.

“Woke up today to a slew of more garbage tweets and DMs. For being a woman. In comics. Who posted a selfie of her friends getting milkshakes,” said Antos in a tweet.

Here is my open letter to any person who thinks we need less Social Justice Warriors in the comic book industry.

“Go fuck yourself,” – Matt Sardo.

The job of a superhero is to inspire us all to be better. Peter Parker makes the right choice, even when it’s not the popular option. It doesn’t matter who you are; Superman will save you because Ma and Pa Kent raised him to be a good kid. When little Steve Rogers jumps on the grenade in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger,’ who do you think he was saving?

Complaining about reboots is one thing, but when you’re angry about diversity in a comic, you have the problem. Moving forward you have two choices: stop being an asshole or stop reading comics. I would prefer that you cease to be an asshole. Since we launched Monkeys Fighting Robots in 2015, I’ve seen some pretty dark comments about diverse comics and women. I do not give in to internet trolls, but when you start harassing a woman for getting a fucking milk shake you have too much time on your hands, and I don’t want you part of this community of comic book nerds.

If this were the Ultimate Universe, Captain America would be knocking on your door to kick the shit out of you. I bet 99% of you trolls would piss your pants before the first punch was landed.

Superman would give you a second chance, and that is what I’m going to do, but this is your final warning: STOP BEING AN ASSHOLE!

If you sent an insult to Antos, you need to apologize. Just hit the comment button you used to send the insult and type ‘I’m sorry,’ then send. Very simple, and very easy.

If diverse superheroes make you angry, you need to ask yourself some serious questions. If you think you can bully the comic book community, you are wrong and need to stop buying comic books.

If you have an opinion about bullying in the comic book industry, comment below. The conversation needs to continue.

As the founder of Monkeys Fighting Robots, I'm currently training for my next job as an astronaut cowboy. Reformed hockey goon, comic book store owner, video store clerk, an extra in 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon,' 'Welcome Back Freshman,' and for one special day, I was a Ghostbuster.

  1. Woah, slow down! You know this is almost a war declaration to your own audience, right? Remember GamerGate? Well, GamerGate started with a bunch articles that were waaay too similar to this one as a reaction.
I’m not going to take a side here, but take that into account, your audience is not one that just nods to everything.

    • That is why the comment section is open. We would love to continue the conversation with you. I used the singular ‘asshole’ because I know there are way more good comic book nerds than trolls that want to harass people. For people to think it is okay to harass a person because of the content of a comic book is wrong. There are civil ways to voice your opinions and concerns.

  2. I don’t appreciate you threatening and bullying the comic book community for not agreeing with your political ideology, that has nothing to do with the Marvel Universe. In your own words Matt, “go fuck yourself”. You want captain America to “kick the shit” out of the bad mean bullies? This article is hypocritical, and pathetic, obviously it’s not okay to harass somebody, but how about addressing how “diversity” is boosting Marvel’s comic book sales… oh wait, your just accosting the rapidly evaporating loyal fan base for not agreeing with your regressive ideology, how about you stop pretending like you speak for the comic book community, take your pretentious agenda, and go fuck yourself with it.

Heather is a strong, professional artist working for one of the largest comic book companies in the world, I don’t think she needs you to white knight and demand people apologize to her for being mean on twitter. Obviously the harassment is not okay, and thankfully twitter engineered a *block* button so we have the technology to handle this. But because people prefer traditional comics that don’t pander to audiences, and constantly concerns itself with identity politics, THEY are the problem? Comic fans LOVE diverse heroes, but a liberal SJW agenda driven ideologue is not diversity, it’s just sloppy propaganda. Your saying my only options are to stop being an “asshole” (for what, having a different opinion?) or stop reading comics? I’ll do you one better, I wont invest in your shitty “diversity” comics. Let me know how Marvels next earnings quarter reflect how successful the new direction is.

  3. This isn’t bullying. Saying that it is discredits children across the world being pushed to suicide from hurtful words and implying these complaints are the same as the trouble those children endure is dispicable. I also think you’re missing the point of what people are saying. These aren’t direct attacks, these are complaints from people who don’t want Marvel to push any more political agendas. I’m a feminist and it still sickens me Marvel cares more about pushing politics than writing stories i and fellow comic readers can enjoy. Imagine if I wrote a pantheon of original and memorable characters over a span of about 2 decades (or at least that’s how long I’ve been reading them) and out of nowhere I start making bad guys say things about going green and the heroes are always supporting rich oil tycoons. It stopped being about the stories and more about a contrived message. I actually DID stop reading Marvel in favor of DC because they kept pulling this shit.

      • Saying someone’s work, be it comics in this case, sucks is harasment? So if hire a plumber and then your cealing starts leaking shit and you complain to him thats harrasment? if the same plumbing company started hireing women with 0 experience to fight patriarchy and your entire block just stank of shit complaining would be herasment, if the plumber then instead of listeing to you started bitching about how crap obama was all the time, complaining about all of that would be herassment is that what are you telling me?
