Blumhouse Announces ‘The Purge’ TV Show

Imagine that America made it legal for citizens to commit crimes, including murder, for twelve-hours one designated night every year, during which all emergency services would be suspended. This is the reality that filmmaker, James DeMonaco, brought to life when he wrote and directed The Purge and its two sequels, The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year, for Blumhouse Productions.

The Purge

The Purge franchise is one of the rare movie series where each installment not only made more money than the last, but was also better received by both audiences and critics. It appears that Blumhouse now plans on bringing the hit horror series to the small screen as a television show.

Per Entertainment Weekly:

“Filmmaker James DeMonaco, who has written and directed all three entries in the franchise (2013’s The Purge, 2014’s The Purge: Anarchy, 2016’s The Purge: Election Year) which take place in an America where citizens are allowed to commit crimes without legal consequences for a twelve-hour period once a year, will oversee the series. The show is produced by Blumhouse Television, which is being re-launched as an independent television studio, with ITV Studios acquiring a 45 percent stake in the operation. The small screen version of The Purge is to be co-produced with Universal Cable Production and will air on USA and Syfy.”

It should comfort fans of the franchise to know that James DeMonaco will be overseeing the series. Given the premise of the three Purge films, I think it’s reasonable to assume that each season will probably be twelve episodes long and take place over the course of a different Purge night, but we’ll know for sure once further details about the project are released.

In the meantime, what do you think of this news? Are you excited that we’ll be seeing a lot more of The Purge in the near future? Let me know in the comments below!
