DC on CW: Week in Review – Flash Goes Back To The Future

Monkeys Fighting Robots

This series will be a brief, semi-comedic review of the CW superhero shows. You can check out last week’s review post here, or see the tally of winners below. The only shows discussed will be ‘Arrow’, ‘Flash’, and ‘Supergirl’. There WILL be some spoilers discussed, so only look at the reviews you’re up to date on!

Supergirl, “Ace Reporter” (April 24)

Supergirl
Supergirl, wishing us a happy belated Easter

Supergirl has learned a lot of lessons in her two-season run. But the CW heroine finally learns a big lesson – Snapper Carr isn’t a bad guy just because he cares about journalism. She also gets some pretty cool fights with Rahul Kohli’s robot bugs. The rules of how the bugs work are kinda unclear, but just think about the bees in Black Mirror and it makes more sense. Lena is a bit boring at first, playing the classic lovestruck ex. And she sounds like she almost has an accent? But the way she gets comeuppance in the end is sweet. The Winn storyline is kind of trite, but Mon-El works well in small doses. And Kohli’s Jack makes a GREAT robot bug queen.

SCORE: 7.5/10 Danishes

The Flash, “The Once And Future Flash” (April 25)

Flash CW
Gotta get back, back to the past, it’s Emo Flash!

The Flash takes a trip down the Darkest Timeline. The show spares no expense in showcasing how Savitar ruins Barry’s life. However, there’s no clue as to who ruins Barry’s hair. The four bars HR/Cisco sang of “Sweet Chariot” was better than the entirety of the CW musical eventHow does Cisco not realize Barry wants to go back in time to fix the things Cisco wants fixed? Sure, the gang let Caitlin get frosty, but that’s sure to wear off soon. It’s more surprising that Tom Felton would stick around on the CW until 2024.

SCORE: 7/10 H.R. Sexts

Arrow, “Dangerous Liaisons” (April 26)

Arrow
Is this what CSI: Cyber was like?

Even for a CW show, Arrow feels a LOT like a soap opera this week. The fighting is mostly reduced to Oliver and Felicity debating morality. John and Lyla’s fight feels rather shoehorned in. The one-off widower scene is awfully cheap. The Rene father plot line feels overly cheesy – not to mention ludicrous. His daughter burned herself on soup he left on the stove because he passed out drunk? I’m sorry, that’s dumb. It is great that Arrow is writing off the Hipster Hackers of HELIX, if nothing else.

SCORE: 6/10 Hosses

WEEKLY WIN TALLY:

Supergirl: 8 Weeks

Arrow: 7 Weeks

The Flash: 4 Week

What show did you think won the week? Does Legends of Tomorrow take your vote? Do you think A.o.S. or Gotham outshines all the CW shows? Let us know in the comments below!

As The First Aquaman Jason Momoa Wants To Set The Tone

Monkeys Fighting Robots

‘Wonder Woman’ hits theaters in a month, and ‘Justice League’ comes out in November, but what’s been going on with Jason Momoa’s ‘Aquaman’ film?

Momoa spoke with GQ and explained that he’s excited to set the tone for the character and all actors that follow in his footsteps. He also gives a few plot points if you read between the lines.

“We’ve never really seen anything from this guy before, so it’s fun to have a level playing field,” said Momoa to GQ. “There aren’t like four Aquamans before me. I get to set the tone for it.”

“The guy was never really accepted on land, and he was never really accepted in Atlantis. He’s a half-breed. But he’s the best of both worlds. He just doesn’t know how to handle his powers. So it’s kind of a coming of age for a young man to a man, or a man to a king. He’s lost a lot of things and he’s got to cope. He’s an outsider,” said Momoa.

Aquaman - Justice League

‘Aquaman’ takes place after the events of the ‘Justice League.’

James Wan directs the film starring Momoa, Amber Heard (Mera), Patrick Wilson (Orm Marius / Ocean Master), the half-brother of Aquaman and the film’s main villain, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Manta), Nicole Kidman (Queen Atlanna), Willem Dafoe (Nuidis Vulko), and Dolph Lundgren (King Nereus).

‘Aquaman’ swims into theaters on December 21, 2018.

A Tale Of Two Quests On ‘Samurai Jack’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Jack and Ashi must overcome a series of dangerous physical and spiritual tests in order to recover Jack’s long lost sword.

This episode was an intense ride. It begins with a flashback which shows how Jack lost his sword in the first place. It can be assumed this was where Jack started his descent into self loathing and madness. Considering it involved him seeing the last time portal in the world being destroyed, losing his sword, and being tricked into killing innocent creatures it’s hard to blame him for being so torn up about the incident. Those baby rams were adorable and Aku turned them into evil murder machines. Low blow there buddy.

As the search for the sword continues, Ashi and Jack each go on journey. Jack goes into deep meditation to magically connect with the weapon, while Ashi find she has to fight off an entire army to protect him. There is a distinct difference between these two scenes. Jack’s is peaceful and full of bright and calming colors. Ashi’s battle is full of rage and lays on the intensity so think you can cut it with a knife. It’s a polarizing episode which leaves you hanging on with interest until the very end. It’s also good to see the ancient beings which helped to form the sword make a comeback.

At the end, Jack and Ashi find themselves with a new mission which will no doubt run to the end of this series. They have to track down Aku and ends things with him. What about the Scotman and all his daughters? Where are they? Only three episodes are left and the series will be over. It’s too soon. The show is just too good. We need more of this quality animation in our lives on a daily basis.

Robert Zemeckis Halts ‘The Flash’ Rumors With New Film

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Earlier this week excitement was brewing as it looked like Robert Zemeckis could be directing ‘The Flash’ for the DC Extended Universe.

As quickly as the rumor got started, Universal Pictures crushed the hopes and dream of DC Comics fans when it announced Robert Zemeckis and Steve Carell’s untitled movie based on the 2010 documentary Marwencol will open Nov. 21, 2018. Zemeckis met with Warner Bros. but Universal quickly booked up his schedule. Depending on how ‘Wonder Woman’ and ‘Justice League’ do at the box office, Warner Bros. might not be able to wait till Zemeckis’ schedule clears up.

As of now ‘The Flash’ film is on hold till Warner Bros. can find a director.

Flash

The untitled film will tell the true story of Mark Hogancamp, who coped with the physical and psychological scars of a violent assault by building a one-sixth scale model of a fictional World War II-era Belgian village he called Marwencol.

Zemeckis will direct from a script he wrote with Caroline Thompson, and the film will star Carell.

‘Wonder Woman’ Director Patty Jenkins Is Already Planning A Sequel

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Although Wonder Woman has not even hit theaters yet, director Patty Jenkins is already planning the second installment. Speaking with the Toronto Sun, she pitched her sequel idea that would take Diana to America.

“I’m excited for her to come to America and become the Wonder Woman we are all familiar with from having grown up around her as an American superhero. I’d like to bring her a little farther along into the future and have a fun, exciting storyline that is its own thing. Wonder Woman 1 is so much about her becoming the person she is. I can’t wait to spring forward with who she is and have another great standalone superhero film.”

Are you looking forward to Wonder Woman? If so, what are your thoughts on Jenkins’ sequel idea? Sound off in the comments below.

’Wonder Woman’ hits movie theaters around the world next summer when Gal Gadot returns as the title character in the epic action adventure from director Patty Jenkins. Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot as the title character, Chris Pine, Robin Wright as Antiope, David Thewlis, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Connie Nielsen, Ewen Bremner, and Lucy Davis.

Confirmed: Beast Boy Will Part Of ‘Titans’ TV Series

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment announced earlier this week that a live-action ‘Titans’ series is coming out in 2018. The new comic book series will be written by Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns, and Greg Berlanti.

Johns took to Twitter after the announcement and confirmed Beast Boy would be part of the series. ‘Titans’ will feature Dick Grayson, Starfire, and Raven.

‘Titans’ follows a group of young soon-to-be Super Heroes recruited from every corner of the DC Universe. In this action-packed series, Dick Grayson emerges from the shadows to become the leader of a fearless band of new heroes. ‘Titans’ is a dramatic, live-action adventure series that will explore and celebrate one of the most popular comic book teams ever.

The series is in early stages of production and will air on a DC-branded direct-to-consumer digital service in 2018.

Beast Boy

About Beast Boy (Garfield Logan):
As a young child, Garfield Logan lived with his scientist parents in Africa, who were developing “reverse evolution” to bring back extinct creatures. He received a certain amount of abuse from these parents, consequently becoming increasingly reclusive. Garfield contracted a rare illness called Sakutia, which is lethal to every species except the West African green monkey. To save his life, his father used an untested serum to change him into a West African green monkey for 24 hours, so that the virus could die out. The serum had the unintended effect of turning his skin, eyes, and hair green, and granting him the ability to metamorph into any animal of his choice. His parents later died in a boating accident; to this day, Garfield believes he could have prevented their deaths. After he is rescued from two kidnappers who forced him to use his powers to help them in their crimes, Garfield is left under the care of a court-appointed guardian, the despicable Nicholas Galtry, who renames him “Craig”. Galtry realizes that his embezzlement from the Garfield estate will be exposed when Garfield reaches maturity and receives his inheritance, and plots to kill Garfield. The villains he hires to kill Garfield are stopped by the Doom Patrol; Elasti-Girl and her husband, Steve Dayton, expose Galtry’s embezzlement and adopt Garfield. Garfield later joins the superhero team; his uniform includes a full-head purple mask with a black or yellow band across the middle of the face, and he takes the code name Beast Boy. During his membership with the Doom Patrol, Garfield has a romantic relationship with a girl from his high school named Jillian Jackson. After he saves her from Galtry (then using the alias “Arsenal”), the relationship dissolves. Beast Boy is deeply affected by the deaths of the Doom Patrol.

Why You Need To Read ‘Tales of the Unusual’ With The Lights On

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Tales of the Unusual

It was a dark winter night when I stumbled upon Tales of the Unusual by Seongdae Oh. With a thriller genre, it was very different to the content I’m used to reading. Something about its description and the art just called out to me though. As they so often say, curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back. In this case I was the cat. This webtoon approaches storytelling in such a unique way; you can’t help but continue scrolling down until nothing remains. Think of your favorite thriller or horror movie and this comic will give you those same feelings.

Plot

What makes Tales of the Unusual so interesting is that it isn’t one coherent story. It’s instead split among plots with different stakes, lessons, and genres.

For example, there’s a story about ghosts, another one about demons, and another still about the dangers of greed. Oh is an expert at creating stories out of nothing or changing your view on things like illnesses or plastic surgery.

My favorite segment is called “My Wife’s Memories” about a ghost. The basic plot is a man starts seeing his diseased wife after she passes away in a fire. It, however, isn’t the traditional version of ghosts we’re used to in entertainment. Turns out that what he’s seeing is actually the memory imprint of his wife around the house. What follows is a sad yet heartwarming tale about a man learning to accept his spouse passing away before him.

The first time I read that part it hit me right in the heart, leaving me a broken mess for the rest of the night. I still sometimes think back and it makes me smile. It was a nice break to the normally foreboding atmosphere the manhwa brings along.

The other stories could be classified as horror like “Kiveiru’s Library”. The gist of it is that people have started enchanting books to enter a dream world where you take a test. If you fail, you never wake up again. If you pass, you gain the knowledge of all the books inside the place and can wake everyone else up. I don’t remember the last time I was absorbed by a story to the point of having to take a walk afterwards to unwind.

If “My Wife’s Memories” makes me smile, “Kiveiru’s Library” made me nervous before sleep. The latter was especially true around exam times.

Kiveiru's test
Once you see what the test is, this part becomes much scarier.

Characters

The main characters vary according to each story. We get an impressive roster ranging from scumbag dog hater to beauty obsessed young lady. They all fit within their story nicely and their moral fiber is often the cause of any misadventures.  That isn’t to say that all of the characters are terrible human beings, it’s just that most are.

Tales of the Unusual oldman
We miss out on a lot of things when we rush through life.

Art Style

The art style is crisp and conveys emotions and actions amazingly well. It is a bit rough at times, but the art is a bonus for this comic. The stories are strong enough to setup the atmosphere nicely on their own.

Oh’s style lends itself nicely to the more shocking scenes he draws. His usage of black, white and more toned down colors for most of the comic is great and contrasts nicely with the brighter colors like red when he decides to use them. Bright colors are used sparingly enough that they pop and come at you when used.

Oh also finds the time to slip in cameos or Easter eggs in each story, which is cool.

Read it

If you’re looking for something different to get your heart pumping, Tales of the Unusual is it. You never really know what you’re going to get out of this so it’s a bit like playing Russian roulette. If you’re a thriller or horror story fan, you’re definitely going to get a kick out of it. Even if you don’t like those genres or you feel like my review wasn’t good, I urge you to at least read “My Wife’s Memory”.

The entire comic can be legally read for free here.
