Chris Pratt, Jennifer Lawrence To Star in Sci-Fi Romance, ‘Passengers’

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence, arguably the two most bankable young stars working today, are officially moving forward in Passengers, a sci-fi romance that has shuffled around Hollywood for almost a decade.

Sony has confirmed the two are attached to the project, which was at one point attached to Keanu Reeves and Rachel MacAdams as the stars. Budget adjustments and the successes of Pratt and Lawrence have undoubtedly pushed this project forward from purgatory.

Here is the synopsis of Passengers:

“Passengers follows a man (Chris Pratt) who finds himself woken ninety years early from cryogenic sleep on board a colony ship partway through its decades long journey through space. Faced with the prospect of spending decades alone he decides to wake up another passenger (Jennifer Lawrence) which sparks a unique romance between the two.”

The premise is certainly intriguing, s is the inclusion of director Morten Tyldum, who will follow up his Oscar nomination for The Imitation Game by stepping behind the camera here. Passengers has potential to be a copelling and thoughtful sci-fi flick. Filming will begin this September.

Starz To Debut Neil Gaiman’s “American Gods” In 2016

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Starz has given a greenlight to FremantleMedia North America’s (FMNA) adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed contemporary fantasy novel American Gods. Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal,” “Pushing Daisies,” “Heroes”) and Michael Green (“The River,” “Kings,” “Heroes”), will pen and showrun the series. Gaiman will also executive produce the series. FremantleMedia North America will produce. Start of production is dependent on casting the lead role of “Shadow Moon.”

Starz CEO Chris Albrecht said, “STARZ is committed to bring American Gods to its legions of fans. With our partners at FremantleMedia and with Bryan, Michael and Neil guiding the project, we hope to create a series that honors the book and does right by the fans, who have been casting it in their minds for years. The search for Shadow begins today!”

Commented Neil Gaiman, “I am thrilled, ‎scared, delighted, nervous and a ball of glorious anticipation. The team that is going to bring the world of American Gods to the screen has been assembled like the master criminals in a caper movie: I’m relieved and confident that my baby is in good hands. Now we finally move to the exciting business that fans have been doing for the last dozen years: casting our Shadow, our Wednesday, our Laura…”

Commented Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, “Almost 15 years ago, Neil Gaiman filled a toy box with gods and magic and we are thrilled to finally crack it open and play. We’re grateful to have STARZ above us and FremantleMedia at our backs as we appease the gods, American or otherwise.”

Craig Cegielski, Co-CEO, FremantleMedia North America said “’American Gods’ has been the passion project for us at FMNA since Stefanie Berk brought this exceptional piece of literature to the company when she joined two years ago. Chris, Carmi and the entire team at Starz are committed partners, sharing the same creative vision and ambition for this series. Neil’s novel is a brilliant work of art, and together with the talented Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, we are committed to delivering a series that is nothing short of extraordinary.”

The 2001 novel has been translated into over 30 languages and earned numerous accolades including Hugo, Nebula and Bram Stoker Awards for Best Novel. The plot posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of biblical and mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.

FremantleMedia North America’s Craig Cegielski and Stefanie Berk will executive produce the series along with Bryan Fuller, Michael Green and Neil Gaiman. Senior Vice President of Original Programming Ken Segna will be the Starz executive in charge of “American Gods.” Starz will retain all network pay TV and SVOD rights to the project. FremantleMedia will distribute the series worldwide.

Fans can tweet @AmericanGodsSTZ and @STARZ_Channel using the hashtag #CastingShadow to share who they think should play the role of “Shadow Moon.”

Why ‘Swamp Thing’ Is A Reboot We Might Actually Need

Monkeys Fighting Robots

It’s been 33 years since Wes Craven delivered the first film adaptation of Swamp Thing. Based on the DC comics hero of the same name, Craven’s Swamp Thing came two years before A Nightmare on Elm Street, so two years before he gained true notoriety. Swamp Thing was a competent film, solid in some aspects, lacking in others, mostly because of a limited budget. The end result of the ups and downs in Swamp Thing is a kitschy 80s semi-classic, brimming with energy but missing its full potential. And then, in 1989, Heather Locklear starred in Return of Swamp Thing, and the less that is said about that the better.

Swamp Thing

The time has come for a reboot of Swamp Thing. As crazy as that may seem, with so many remakes and reboots and re-imaginings and yada yada, here is a property in dire need of a new interpretation because so much meat has been left on the bone. As nostalgically entertaining as Wes Craven’s version of Swamp Thing may be, it is still a product of its era, trapped in the effects and budget constraints of 1982, and overall murky and in need of a jolt. A new budget would serve the character well, and not just for effects purposes, but to flesh out the human side of things. As, ahem, memorable as Adrianne Barbeau may be, her performance is most certainly lacking in the end.

What is so intriguing about the potential for a new Swamp Thing is the Alan Moore influence on the character. Not long after Craven’s film version, in the late 80s Moore began publishing The Saga Of The Swamp Thing for DC, enriching the character greatly and sending it through an appropriate gauntlet of emotions. Moore’s stories deconstructed the character, and rebuilt it with more of a focus on political and environmental issues that would be absolutely perfect for the character in the 21st century. Needless to say, Return of Swamp Thing didn’t bother with any sort of environmental concerns.

Moore Swamp Thing

Swamp Thing could end up being a success for DC if they did everything right. Capture the dark tone of the character, the tortured soul, and keep the grit and the texture true. It could even DC’s response to Daredevil and turn into a series on Netflix. Either way, Swamp Thing has never realized its full potential outside the pages of Alan Moore’s volumes. Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Splice) recently joined Twitter and showed off several screenplays and concept drawings from dead projects, one of them being four pages of a Swamp Thing script. There’s a start. Of all the unnecessary remakes and reboots and on and on we go down a spiral of decreasing quality, here is a property that actually needs a fresh take. Let’s make it happen, DC.

Sense8 episode 4&5 thoughts (I guess its getting good)

Monkeys Fighting Robots

The reason I am doing two episodes at a time now is that Sense8 is so much more slow and shallow than I initially thought. So I’ve decided to, while still taking in all the show has to say, do it in a more quick fashion. Also because like nothing happened in episode 4. And unlike my last three Sense8 episode articles I won’t be giving a recap about what happened. I’ll just be going over my thoughts about the episodes. If you want a refresher for episode 4 and 5 here are links to the episode description. And no they’re not just short for brevity sake, nothing important almost ever happens in this show.

Sense8 Episode descriptions

So like I said episode 4 is a real bore for most of its run. And while I am being a little harsh because there are certainly things that happen that pertain to the plot in this episode, it just feels like stuff that has been a long time coming. It’s not satisfying, it’s just like, “Finally!”

sense8 plot

So once Will is able to meet with Jonas, using his ability, we get to learn quite a bit about being a sensate. And since I wrote in my last article about how we desperately needed some explanation, this is a good scene. But again, I feel we needed it long ago and the only reason I liked it is because almost nothing happens. A good way to describe this show is like a parent keeping the bucket of ice cream away from their kid. They only give him a scoop every now and then because they know if they give him the whole bucket he’ll eat it all and get a stomach ache. Well this show is the parent, the ice cream is the plot, and I’m the kid. So just give the damn ice cream already! I don’t care if I get a stomach ache, because at least its better than waiting around for someone to give me the ice cream. But anyway, the way Jonas explains things isn’t too convoluted and gets straight to the point, which is nice. I also like how he brings up Nomi again and kind of scolds Will for still not doing anything about it.

Speaking of Nomi she finally gets out of the hospital after being heavily sedated. Somehow Will takes over her body and finds enough strength and where with all to get out of the hospital where Nomi’s girlfriend is waiting for her. Kinda convenient but forgivable. I’ll explain the main reason I like this scene at the end of the article.

Sense8 karaoke

Also there’s a nice, but pointless, scene where Wolfgang sings a song and Riley is listening to the same some. And then every sensate starts to sing along. Even Nomi who is the process of being drugged. I think its suppose to symbolize togetherness, but honestly there really is no evidence for that, so this scene doesn’t really hold the weight it could. I mean only two at this point have actually spoken to each other.

Episode 5 on the other hand I really liked and mainly for a key scene that has been on my mind since I watched it. But before I get to that I just need to rant a little.

plot convenience sense8

Nomi’s girlfriend is way to accepting of all things crazy. She just thinks everything will be sunshine and rainbows if they’re together. And thinking about consequences are stupid. She also has this horrible speech comparing supernatural anomalies to choices people make. Now I get why she was comparing them but if you take even a few seconds to think about it, the whole idea falls apart. I was kind of insulted because this speech is played to be eye-opening and inspirational, but clearly is half-baked and not well thought out at all. Just another excuse to show how strong these two people are to be living the way they are. We get it! They’re gay girls, one of which who used to be a man, get on with it!

Sense8 development

Anyway getting to the scene I loved. Capheus and Sun see each other walking and eventually meet up. Now keep in mind they are still in their home countries and only seeing each other through their ability. But the conversation they have here gives a lot of importance to the ability itself. Now what I mean by that is in a lot of stories there are MacGuffins that only exist to expand the plot forward and serve little purpose on whats actually going on in the story. If this doesn’t make sense to you then I think you should look up the difference between plot and story. Because they are two different things. But anyway now sensing isn’t just fuel for the plot, its directing things that are happening in the story. It has meaning to these characters. Sun is facing a decision and without this ability Capheus couldn’t be able to help her in her conflict. Sun gets to do a little of character development because she is able to talk to him through their ability. That’s why I liked the scene where Nomis escaped so much. And the scene where Capheus fights off the guys who stole his moms medicine. Their abilities are being used to progress the story instead of just being in service of the plot, which is nice, and I approve. Do more of that Sense8!
