Rob Zombie’s Next Project Is A Biopic On… Groucho Marx?

Monkeys Fighting Robots

In what is easily some of the strangest news of the week, at least at first sight, is that Rob Zombie’s next project as a director is a biopic on comedic legend Groucho Marx. Deadline first reported the pairing of horror guru Zombie and Marx, and the film will be adapted from Steve Stoliar’s memoir Raised Eyebrows: My Years Inside Groucho’s House.

Stoliar, who lived with Groucho in the last few years of his life, wrote about the somewhat strange and contentious final times of the comedian. Apparently, there is enough strange and interesting material that Zombie’s involvement with a former Hollywood icon sounds less bizarre. Zombie had an interesting take on the story, saying “I have been a huge Groucho Marx fan ever since I was a child and have read countless book on the comic legend, but after reading the book Raised Eyebrows, a totally new perspective on Groucho’s life emerged.

I immediately saw this project as Groucho’s Sunset Boulevard,” he added, “and knew I had to bring it to the big screen. It is a sad, funny and very dark tale of a one of Hollywood’s greatest stars final years.”

Groucho

Sunset Boulevard is an interesting angle for Rob Zombie to go with, and if he can pull off the at least a hint of the off-kilter tone in the Billy Wilder classic perhaps he can effectively break away from horror. Zombie is a talented filmmaker, at least I think he is, but his films are extremely hit or miss. His last few ventures into the horror genre (Halloween II, The Lords of Salem) have gotten progressively worse in my opinion, so maybe this will be a chance for Zombie to show off his talented eye in another avenue of storytelling.

Rob Zombie will be working on a script from Oren Moverman, who recently penned the screenplay for the Brian Wilson biopic Love & Mercy.

“American Gods” Concept Art

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Bryan Fuller and Michael Green are writing the adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s 2001 novel American Gods, and will serve as showrunners and exec producers.

Starz To Debut Neil Gaiman’s “American Gods” In 2016

Starz has given a greenlight to FremantleMedia North America’s (FMNA) adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed contemporary fantasy novel American Gods. Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal,” “Pushing Daisies,” “Heroes”) and Michael Green (“The River,” “Kings,” “Heroes”), will pen and showrun the series. Gaiman will also executive produce the series. FremantleMedia North America will produce. Start of production is dependent on casting the lead role of “Shadow Moon.”

Starz CEO Chris Albrecht said, “STARZ is committed to bring American Gods to its legions of fans. With our partners at FremantleMedia and with Bryan, Michael and Neil guiding the project, we hope to create a series that honors the book and does right by the fans, who have been casting it in their minds for years. The search for Shadow begins today!”

Commented Neil Gaiman, “I am thrilled, ‎scared, delighted, nervous and a ball of glorious anticipation. The team that is going to bring the world of American Gods to the screen has been assembled like the master criminals in a caper movie: I’m relieved and confident that my baby is in good hands. Now we finally move to the exciting business that fans have been doing for the last dozen years: casting our Shadow, our Wednesday, our Laura…”

Commented Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, “Almost 15 years ago, Neil Gaiman filled a toy box with gods and magic and we are thrilled to finally crack it open and play. We’re grateful to have STARZ above us and FremantleMedia at our backs as we appease the gods, American or otherwise.”

Craig Cegielski, Co-CEO, FremantleMedia North America said “’American Gods’ has been the passion project for us at FMNA since Stefanie Berk brought this exceptional piece of literature to the company when she joined two years ago. Chris, Carmi and the entire team at Starz are committed partners, sharing the same creative vision and ambition for this series. Neil’s novel is a brilliant work of art, and together with the talented Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, we are committed to delivering a series that is nothing short of extraordinary.”

The 2001 novel has been translated into over 30 languages and earned numerous accolades including Hugo, Nebula and Bram Stoker Awards for Best Novel. The plot posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of biblical and mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.

FremantleMedia North America’s Craig Cegielski and Stefanie Berk will executive produce the series along with Bryan Fuller, Michael Green and Neil Gaiman. Senior Vice President of Original Programming Ken Segna will be the Starz executive in charge of “American Gods.” Starz will retain all network pay TV and SVOD rights to the project. FremantleMedia will distribute the series worldwide.

Fans can tweet @AmericanGodsSTZ and @STARZ_Channel using the hashtag #CastingShadow to share who they think should play the role of “Shadow Moon.”

HBO Wants Bill Simmons Badly

Monkeys Fighting Robots

HBO is reportedly trying to bring Bill Simmons over to the network. This almost makes too much sense for Simmons and HBO. A half-hour show, documentaries, and the digital content fall in line with the current direction of the HBO brand. Plus, HBO is not in bed with the NFL, MLB or NBA, Simmons could attack anyone and then HBO will let the video go viral.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

Considerably more likely is Simmons, whom the network is said to have made a big play for after his unceremonious booting from the more corporate ESPN. Such a move would be straight out of the HBO playbook, which famously provided a creative reprieve for former ABC flameout Bill Maher many years earlier. Though Simmons is said to have several suitors, insiders say conversations at HBO have focused on a TV show — something Simmons is believed to want — along with heavy digital extensions that make the prolific personality tailor-made for the HBO Now era.

“Chew” TV Series Has Found A New Home?

Monkeys Fighting Robots

According to Bleeding Cool, there will be announcement regarding the Image Comics title Chew by John Layman and Rob Guillory.

In 2011, Showtime was developing the comic into a half-hour comedy series. Then in 2013, Layman stated on Facebook that the Showtime deal was not moving forward.

There is also an animated feature in the works, that announcement came in April of 2014.

There are three options for the Chew announcement; the show found a new home, there is a trailer for the animated feature, or a live action film will be announced.

Chew is an American comic book series about a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) agent who solves crimes by receiving psychic impressions from comestibles, including people. It is written by John Layman with art by Rob Guillory and published by Image Comics. The series has won two Eisner Awards and two Harvey Awards.

Sense8 Has Found A Way – Episode 6&7

Monkeys Fighting Robots

Sense8 has certainly been a wild ride so far, and we’re only half way through. And while I liked the last two episode for their character development, I was still a little hungry for something to actually happen besides a bunch of them sensing each other and talking. At some points it just feels like a fancy way to group chat… Or group orgy. And while these episodes certainly had a lot of that(especially orgies), other things happened too, good things. Sense8 Will

It seems that after five episode Sense8 has found a way, that is to actually start gearing up and doing what it promised from the beginning. For example, you see that guy in the picture? You might have forgotten about him since we haven’t seen him since the beginning of the first episode, but he’s the bad guy. And our two sensates Nomi and Will are getting closer to finding out what he does and what he wants.

Sense8 Wolfgang and KalaSense8 Connections

Now when a show has so many characters and they are all suppose to be connected in some way it’s probably hard to convey actual connections between character. Especially since they haven’t even met in real-time yet, or shared only a few experiences together. But I think Sense8 has found a way to remedy this with having certain sensates have an innate deep connection that each other. One of the reasons I think this is the similarities between Riley and Capheus. Both of them have share a similar sort of unwanted past (Riley with her mom and Capheus with his people). The fact that they are sort of kindred spirits makes them closer naturally and gives their interactions seem more natural. I think the same thing is going on with Kala and Wolfgang, but for the fact that they are polar opposites, dealing with their relationship with their families. They’re polar opposites where Kala only wants to please her family and Wolfgang hates and resents his family. Its starting to seem there are certain traits that reflect better when a certain two sensates interact, which I really like. But it might be me looking too deep into it. They also might be doing it with all the characters eventually. But for now I’ll keep my theory.

Nomi Secret agent

Now I don’t think It’s a secret but ever since the beginning of the show I’ve found Nomi super annoying. I just don’t like the hippie mentality that she and her girlfriend share. But yet again, Sense8 has found a way to make me start to enjoy the time when she’s on-screen. All the hacking and sleuthing she did in these two episodes is starting to make her an enjoyable character. And its moving the plot along at an alarming rate. Way to go Nomi!

So you might think I’ve turned into just another fan boy screaming the shows praises. Well, not quite. While even though a lot is moving forward with the story. It still feels only like Will and Nomi are the ones doing anything. The other six sensates are still dealing with their own lives. I just can’t shake this feeling of wasting so much time for the sake of nothing. But given that most of their problems involve drugs and big corporations, I’m pretty sure they will all tie in with this secret organization pretty soon. Except Lito. No idea where that stuff is going. But for the rest of them I can see shit hitting the fan real soon.

Also I just wanna see Sun get into a fight with a monster girl in prison and beat the shit out of her. I f she did she could be running that place in a week. I know it has nothing to do with the story, but it would be cool to see.

Also one more thing. I think I’ve come to the conclusion that Riley is the best girl out of all of them.  I know it really it isn’t a contest, but as a guy I can’t help but think about these things. I mean come on, just look at that smile.

Sense8 Best girl

George Takei Is Over William Shatner

Monkeys Fighting Robots

George Takei spoke with Taffy Brodesser-Akner of The New York Times about his musical Allegiance based on his family’s time in an internment camp during World War II.

Apparently you can’t have a conversation with Takei without talking about William Shatner. Takei has written three books, has a web series, is an advocate same-sex marriage, and has taken control of social media at the age of 78; yet Takei is pulled back into the Shatner feud like a blackhole.

Takei comments on the tension between him and Shatner.
“It’s not tension, it’s all coming from Bill. Whenever he needs a little publicity for a project, he pumps up the so-called controversy between us, said Takei. Two months after my wedding, he went on YouTube and ranted and raved about our not sending him an invitation. We had. If he had an issue, he could have easily just phoned us before the wedding, simple as that. But he didn’t. And the reason he raised that fuss two months later is because he was premiering his new talk show, “Raw Nerve,”” said Takei.

Takei commented on the worst part of working with Shatner on Star Trek.
“It’s difficult working with someone who is not a team player. The rest of the cast all understand what makes a scene work — it’s everybody contributing to it. But Bill is a wonderful actor, and he knows it, and he likes to have the camera on him all the time,” said Takei.

Will Takei ever forgive Shatner?
“I don’t need to forgive him. I’ve already invited him to the opening night of “Allegiance,”” said Takei.

Allegiance will debut on Broadway in November.

The outlet has now confirmed one more plot thread for Suicide Squad. How Aquaman was captured?

It appears that Aquaman is being held prisoner by Amanda Waller and is being studied and tested on. He was captured after a fight with a mutated shark who is being held in the same prison as he is. Waller refers to it as King of Sharks.

King Shark

Who is this?

About Suicide Squad:
Suicide Squad stars two-time Oscar nominee Will Smith (“The Pursuit of Happyness,” “Ali,” upcoming “Focus”) as Deadshot; Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg; Margot Robbie (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Focus,” the “Tarzan” movie) as Harley Quinn; Oscar winner Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyers Club,” “Alexander”) as the Joker; Jai Courtney (“Divergent,” upcoming “The Water Diviner”) as Boomerang; and Cara Delevingne (“Anna Karenina,” upcoming “Pan”) as Enchantress.

An all-star roster of actors has joined Warner Bros. Pictures’ new action adventure “Suicide Squad,” bringing DC Comics’ super villain team to the big screen under the direction of David Ayer (“Fury”). The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.

In making the announcement, Silverman said, “The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one. David Ayer returns to the studio where he wrote ‘Training Day’ and brings his incredible ability to craft multidimensional villains to this iconic DC property with a cast of longtime Warner collaborators Will Smith and Tom Hardy, and other new and returning favorites: Margot, Jared, Jai and Cara. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.”

Ayer is also writing the script for “Suicide Squad,” which is being produced by Charles Roven (“The Dark Knight” trilogy, upcoming “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”) and Richard Suckle (“American Hustle”). Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns are serving as executive producers.
