This series will be a brief, semi-comedic review of the CW superhero shows. You can check out last week’s review post here, or see the tally of winners below. The only shows discussed will be ‘Arrow’, ‘Flash’, and ‘Supergirl’. There WILL be some spoilers discussed, so only look at the reviews you’re up to date on!
Supergirl, “We Can Be Heroes” (Jan 30)
Is Livewire supposed to be Supergirl’s Joker? If so, CW needs to get FOX’s Jerome instead. The twist of making Livewire a scapegoat was interesting, but not wholly earned. The brain-death plot line feels like a cheap way to resolve the Martian conflict. They save it at the end, but M’Gann deserved better. Winn is still pretty whiny, which I thought would stop after last week. Him then hopping to prove Supergirl wrong also feels off-brand. Seeing Guardian and Mon-El bumble around is entertaining, but it proves that Supergirl needs to cut down on its super-folk. CW shows already have too many heroes per series.
SCORE: 6.5/10 Car Doors
The Flash, “Dead or Alive” (Jan 31)
Zack Stentz, you’ve done it again. Iris getting a chance to shine is great, and Kid Flash is still lots of fun. I like the idea of trans-dimensional Collector cops. The Speed Force could use agents like that instead of those creepy Dementor things. The Cisco/HR relationship development felt inevitable, but it was sweet to see it come to fruition. Cisco really does have a problem of falling in love with villains. It was great to see him be funny and dorky without relying on nerd culture references. Well, except for Westworld, but I get that. And what a great button with Barry and Wally! More than ever, I’m excited to see what’s next for The Flash!
SCORE: 8/10 Sci-Fi Novels
Arrow, “Second Chances” (Feb 1)
I like that there’s a new Black Canary, but I hope that Team Arrow slims its ranks down. Canary’s name and origin story are rather cringe-worthy, but she is a great DC staple. And the twist on the “what would Vince want” line was golden. While she might be fun, however, there seems to be no need for a new Al Ghul girl. The mini-me Felicity is somewhat interesting, but hopefully she’ll take a darker turn. Oliver’s helicopter scene is almost as unbelievably cool as Captain America’s. The flashbacks are finally wrapping up! We’re almost done with flashbacks! Hooray!
SCORE: 7/10 Flash Post-Its
WEEKLY WIN TALLY:
Arrow: 4.5 Weeks
The Flash: 3.5 Week
Supergirl: 3 Weeks
