Blumhouse released the poster for the next film in The Purge franchise, and it will undoubtedly get a lot of attention from both sides of the political aisle. The poster appeared just hours ago across the interwebs. To make the nation-wide trolling even more epic, The First Purge will enter theaters on July 4th, 2018.
Without further delay, this is the poster for the fourth film in The Purge franchise:
The story of The First Purge goes like this:
To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.
The Purge series is steeped in politics. Afterall, it’s an authoritarian government that allows for the one-night-a-year killing spree. And The Purge 3: Election Year, released in 2016, featured “Keep America Great” as the tagline. So, Mr. Blum and the gang aren’t shy about mixing in some political commentary here and there which helps keep things a bit fresh beyond repeating a maniacal night of murder and mayhem.
As the resident “hater” at Monkeys Fighting Robots, I welcome the provocative poster. Movie posters used to be talked about on a regular basis because they were often brilliant pieces of print advertising and commercial art. Today, posters serve a matter-of-fact purpose as the Internet, and an endless stream of slick trailers renders them obsolete. Few posters get much interest when it’s not tied to a major blockbuster franchise.
But, this poster is certainly an attention getter. It’s also a seriously creepy advertisement for a horror film in 2018. The First Purge poster blurs the line between horrific fiction and our somewhat heinous reality. For some groups of people, the potential of being “purged” is part of daily life.
