MINOR SPOILERS FOR Voltron: Legendary Defender Season 1-4
After the more predictable developments from the previous season of Voltron: Legendary Defender, fans were wondering if the show had hit its peak. Luckily, season four returned with a vengeance and reminded everyone of the reason why they fell in love with this series in the first place. Let’s explore this Netflix exclusive a bit deeper.
Writing
The season opens by deciding to take the characters in a much different direction than anyone ever believed. It is revealed Keith has become more focused on working with the Blade of Mamora than with the Voltron Paladins. This results in him becoming distant from his friends which leads to a new development. This is a departure from what was previously expected as it was taught after the event of the previous season Keith was going to focus more on his in new role of leader of the Voltron team and stop being a loner.
As these events play out, the series makes sure to pull out on the stops on making sure the audience feels something. The show finds a way to showcase a lot of emotional moments while the same time getting a lot of zany humor when you least expect it. As the first two episodes go deep with the drama, episodes three and four find a way to be incredible entertaining thanks to its comedy. Just when you think you know what is going to come next, the show keeps you guessing.
Artwork
The animation for this season is particularly of note. A lot of attention was paid to the color work to make sure good dramatic elements were achieved.. Take the episode Reunion as an example. This episode was of particular note as Pidge continues to search for her brother and a great deal of time was paid to the color working to showcase the sadness unfolding. As Pidge continues the search and it appears like the search is going south, the scene cuts back to the robot Lion as the rain starts to poor. As lighting dances behind it and the robot looks sad and remorseful to indicate dread and misery on the horizon. Impressive work to say the least.
Music
The music continues to help to shape the right reactions of the show. The background songs are so good, it’s becoming more and more apparent the soundtrack needs to be released in the future. The homage to the Power Rangers in the episode The Voltron show was noticed and much appreciated.
Conclusion
The fourth season of Voltron continues to accelerate the story while at the same time giving plenty of room for growth with characters and humor which never gets old. As long as this level of quality keeps up in the presentation the fans have no worries about enjoying the contained adventures of the paladins of Voltron. Now begins the process of waiting for the next season to come out. Why must they torture us so?
